- Many people think it is impossible to save any money on low income, especially on minimum wage. It is definitely doable by adjusting your lifestyle and in this video, I share how I saved $6,000 per year without ever making more than $10/hour and I did this in New York City. New York City is the most expensive city in the United States. If you live in a lower cost of living city and make $10/hour, you can save even more than I did.
Edit: I think some people don't think my advice works. Here are the actual numbers. You can't argue with numbers.
FAQ: How did you have $1000 to spend if you made only $120/week? I worked at massage parlor for 60 hours a week answering phones and cleaning the place. Owner paid me $120/week cash. Keep in mind, a massage costs $60/hour. I made $10-$20 cash tips each on 9 massages weekly.
FAQ: Since you're a tipped worker, isn't your boss allowed to pay you $3/hour? No. I made like $250/week after I include tips. At 60 hours, that's like $4.17/hour.

MY $3/HOUR BUDGET AND LIVING WITH MY PARENTS
$1,000 income every 4 weeks from $480 salary ($3/hr @ 60-hour workweeks) and $520 from tips
$116.50 for public transportation
$40 for brown bagged lunch
$343.50 on gifts for my emotionally manipulative ex-boyfriend, my unhealthy chocolate addiction to cope with the general unhappiness of how my life was turning out, slow accumulation of household items I knew I needed to have to move out without any problems.
$500 for savings

MY $10/HOUR BUDGET, NOT LIVING WITH MY PARENTS
$1800 income every 4 weeks from working more than standard 40 hours, but boss did not me for overtime "time and a half" as required because I was paid under the table.
Room-for-rent in 4bd 2br apt in Brooklyn: $750
Utilities & Internet: $50 after splitting with roommates
Phone bill : $25 From LycaMobile
Smartphone: $0 on a monthly basis because I bought a refurbished iPhone for $95 back then and paid in full (see my other video on brand name smartphones on a budget). An expense like this would come out of my hobbies & miscellaneous category.
Groceries: $180 because I ate vegetarian (lots of beans to fill my stomach), shopped almost everything on sale, and cooked everything from scratch
Public transportation: $0 because I biked everywhere and because I'm getting paid minimum wage, I refuse to work anywhere past a 2-mile radius. I bought the bike using money I saved up from when I still lived with parents.
Toiletries and household supplies from my local 99c store: ~$40 and sales tax free if I paid in cash
Health insurance (Medicaid): $0 but if I didn't have Medicaid, I would just go without health insurance, which is what I did when I moved to Texas and couldn't afford it. You are exempt from Obamacare penalty if you're so low income that you can't afford it.
Restaurant/Cafes: $0 because I never ate out. If a meal cost $20 and it took me 2 hours of minimum wage work just to eat, it's not financially smart.
Spending money on hobbies, miscellaneous: $255 for things like my $90 annual Toastmasters dues, used books that weren't available at the library, $15 weekly pole dancing classes with the early bird special, second hand clothes from eBay, shoes from Payless, $20 haircuts every two months, getting to and from volunteering activities, self-serve laundry, etc. On some months, I would scrimp on dance classes and other stuff just so I could buy bus tickets to visit other cities along the east coast like Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington D.C., couch surf for free, and spend $150 for EVERYTHING on a 2-day trip on the weekend. As you can see, I filled my time with cheap, fulfilling activities that did not involve watching TV (I've never owned a TV).
Savings: $500 give or take. $500 is the average. It fluctuated every month by $50, depending on the miscellaneous category.
If you think this budget doesn't work, it's probably because you have car loan, student loans, or credit card debt. I have been living on a budget since the $3/hr job I worked fresh out of high school when I was 18. I didn't go straight to college--that story is for another video. To this day, I have never accumulated ANY debt, though my significant other has debt from before we met, and I have agreed to help him pay it off. The ONLY debt I would ever take on is a mortgage, because if I'm going to pay rent for shelter, I might as well buy my own place and build my net worth.

We can't change how our parents are, but there are other options. I was out of my parents' home by 17, but I shared a room with another girl. Not fun, but cheaper.

I’ve been saving $800 a month since I was 14! I’m 21 and still live with my dad. I make around $1,200 a month. I pay for my own food, phone, Internet and gas. In 4 years I’ll have over $100,000! Then I plan on buying a house outright with no mortgage! (Where I live land and houses are really cheap. I mean I was on Zillow the other day, and there was a 5 bed 3 bath house for $120,000!)

When I was 14, I worked a full time night shift job. It was $16 an hour because night shifts typically paid more. And now I make $25 an hour as a CNA &CMA

I pick up pennies I find on the ground. People often criticise me for doing it, saying "What are you doing!? Don't you know that a penny isn't even worth the energy you used to pick it up!?" as if it affected their lives on some way. But what they don't know is, when I pick one up, more often than not, there would be another penny or a dime or even a quarter that would have gone unnoticed. I put all the change I pick up in a jar, and at the end of a really good month, I end up with about $100. So go ahead and pick up pennies, you'd be surprised at how quickly it adds up!

My great grandfather does this, and he would save it up all year and split it between the 5 great grandkids for Christmas. People don't see the value of saving change, but having those penny jars made a difference when money was tight for me.

this what you are calling a low income in the USA could be medium income in Poland ,Mexico ,China ,Russia etc ...World is not just the USA and western countries . Whole of Latin America ,half of Europe ,Asia , Africa can only dream about 7,25 USD /hour . Thats a lot of money in Gdansk ,Poland where I live . 25 Polish Zloty per hour !!!!! But what im talking about . Yes! My mom used to tell me : “Pride comes before the fall!” No matter what we have to survive and stay ahead as well as teach our kids the same! Split that room, take that bus, wash and rewear those clothes! It’s hard in a nation full of ads and temptation, trying to convince you that what you have isn’t good enough, but we have to put ourselves first. Instead of buying an $8 bottle of Dove body wash, get the 97 cent soap bar or make your own. Spender turned saver here, and I can say that frugality breeds creativity, content, peace of mind and gratitude. Wise words , girl ! Keep it up, you’ll make an excellent mother!

Another tip: Draw a calendar, and color code it based off how much money you spent that day. Green means no money spent. Yellow means less than $10. Orange is 11-30. Red is 30-50. And purple is $50+.
It helped me see a pattern in my spending and helped me fix it. I also noticed all the money I was spending.

spot on! eating out and snacks totaled up to be the single highest charge on my bank statement. those $5 -$25 amounts don't seem too crazy in the moment, but can total to thousands during the month.

When you buy second hand clothing, find a rich area within a reasonable distance and buy from that store. Usually these stores have higher quality inventory. Very nice video!
Totally in a college town the college staff ladies often put out high quality clothes to thrift stores as tehy dress really well.
I love buying second hand! I also have a capsule wardrobe which helps to stop me buying clothing when I don't need it.

I need to stop being a lazy bum and stop ordering delivery food. I have to cook I have to cook.
If you don't want to cook so often - cook in bulk, freeze in servings. If you can't cook - microwave food is still cheaper than restaurants. There are recipe pages online, too.

Well congratulations most people won’t ever have even 10k stashed like that, but for me I guess it felt really good because I had come from being a broke drug addict and when I had that first 10 grand saved I felt I had really turned things around in my life. But I’ll also say it never feels like enough even with multiple six figures saved I stll always feel like it’s not enough, I don’t know if that ever goes away maybe when you’ve got millions and millions but probably not it’s just human nature to always want what we don’t have. So like you I try to just appreciate what I’ve got and thank god for it.
justin snider I was an orphan at 13 mom and dad died of cancer. So I was raised by strict older siblings. I would get a B or C in school and they would tell me house much of a piece of ish I was. Maybe it comes from that never feeling like anything is enough. Also I also feel like that money I have put away can disappear at any minute and like with that fear daily :(

Thanks for mentioning paying "rent" to parents. I hate seeing advice where people save up like 90% of their income because they're living for free at home!! When I got my first job my paycheque mostly went back to my parents because we were POOR! This is the reality of life. Don't mooch off your parents.

Sounds like you have a family. Hard to change a while group's eating habits. If you must you need to sit down and plan with your wife, meals and snacks, with snacks being the first to go. They are really expensive. Once a week, maybe.
I love chocolates in the box, big box, but once a year, maybe, just cost too much.
Cabbage is good and inexpensive and can be made into tasty food.
I used to spend $150-200 a week at Shoprite, now I spend that a month, and I feel OK. yes, I have night when I get the snack itch bugging me, but I have found tea kills the urge, and then, I'm good to go. you'll work it out. Won't be easy but, you'll do what you need to do.

When I reviewed my finances that was my major one as well. I called it "death by $20". Lots of purchases under $20 that I could justify spending in the moment, but when I looked at it, it was hundreds of dollars a month.

How did you manage to find an apartment that was okay with half your income going to rent? Usually they demand you make 3x the rent amount.

Now the place changed hands I asked if the take low income I got section 8 as I was on the list 2 years thinking I was going to move eventually. But last year my job let all the managers go so I applied for early social security got section 8 approved two weeks before the covid started so now I got that I work part time and my rent went down from $950 to $374. Big difference. So now with the difference and check I got from covid $1,200 I paid off 4 bills and plan to pay off the rest in 8 months. When I get all the bills paid off I can save the $250 for myself. Yay. Your channel is awesome. I know it's hard but one must plan ahead. If u don't then it's hard and ppl mess up and get evicted. But many don't learn from their mistakes. I've never been evicted and took care of my kids after divorce. Hope ppl take your great tips to 💓. Been in this apt 13 years this December. Make your own coffee. I use to buy frozen coffee every morning and started making it myself. You’ll save yourself a lot of money making your own things

A great way to save money is to stop paying for cable television. I use a Mohu Leaf antenna in my window for free over-the-air tv stations. Also, youtube is full of free public domain movies and tv shows.
That is a great idea. I don't think many people use antenna anymore but it's a good alternative for people who want cable just to watch the news.
Depending on where you live, you can get many free tv stations. I live in Niagara Falls and can get many stations from Buffalo and Toronto. Altogether I get about 20 different tv stations. Most are in hi-def!
For transportation I use the train. I pay for a weekly pass. Also, I'm vegan. You don't have to have to eat meat for iron. You could have researched plant based foods rich in iron. I like lentils
I used an antenna at some point. The cheapest one. 56 channels!
@@AnnieMargaritaYang In San Francisco I get about about 40 stations, some are HD. We just watched a Warriors NBA first playoff game in HD via antenna yesterday. About 50 miles away in the East Bay valley suburbs, you need cable.
Beans are a great source of iron and much cheaper too!

The lock down during the pandemic taught me many things. one of them was I don’t miss going shopping, buying new clothes, and make up. I used to miss eating out but I really don’t want to right now because it could kill me so by staying home and just buying whatever I need I probably saved up as much money per month as when I was working. that includes commuting an hour to and from work. I used to think I would miss my high flying life but I really don’t. it’s amazing how satisfied you can be when you make up your mind to be.

If u h have credit cards just don't use them anymore start paying off the one that you owe less and once that's paid off use that payment to pay the next credit card always use cash put it in an envelope that's all you going to use that week once it's gone you can't spend anymore by yourself something once a month that you really love but it's at the thrift store or like Ross or Marshalls hope this helps

Simple . My personal experience & self rules
1》 keep your monthly housing costs UNDERR 20% of your monthly income. Aim for 10%. I promise it does exist.
2》 don't work over 40 hours week. Don't swap your ME time for more money. Every six months I move to a higher paying job (that pays at least 1.50 more). Now I work 36 hours in 3 days @ $18 hour & spend 3 days on my own business so I can stop working.

I've had several cars that were over 350,000 miles - my teenage kids wrecked them. Now I'll never know just how many more miles I could have gotten out of them! As for apartments - I found the "dream" apartment, but after moving in, came home to find sandwich meat, tomato, mayo and bread on the counter - the maintenance guy was helping himself to my food and there was NO reason for him to even be in the apartment! When I complained, he started coming over DAILY and unscrewing the hinged lock on my gate so my pet got out. I had to move after six weeks of this.

I will be working sessonal jobs and specify I will only work up to 35 hours, and these jobs are also above $18/hr - the only ones I will accept lower offer free rent. Also, I am growing towards being self employed and one certification away from being able to do nutritional counselling from anywhere I am and I'll lower my bridge job hours down to 28 a week max !!

Depends, your money situation may not afford to live without sharing. When I was single, I had 5 roommates at the same time. It was wild and fun! Years after, we have annual get togethers. On the other hand, you maybe in a rent control city and may have to go through a lengthy and expensive legal process to get rid of you roomate(s). Or move out and landlord/roomates go after you for breaking the lease or whatever. OK then, live alone.

You actually don't get sick as often if you keep the heat lower in winter, strange to say. You develop a tolerance for colder temperatures in general, and you burn more calories, which is awesome. One way I keep warm at night is to heat up one of those rice packs in the microwave and put it at the small of my back in bed. I stay really cosy all night, and it costs practically nothing!

I'm don't care much about diet to be honest. I'm not a picky eater and can eat anything. I maintain my weight by limiting my portions. My reason for eating vegetarian back then was to keep my weekly grocery budget under $30. I don't understand nutrition as much as you do Bobbi, so I ate to fill my stomach, not to necessarily looking at how it affected my health. When I had trouble walking up a flight of stairs or felt like fainting after five minutes of walking and my blood test showed my iron was dangerously low... I stopped and decided to eat red meat once a week. Not a big deal. Let's not judge why people eat what they eat.

My tip is to always save first. Don't wait to see what is left over at the end of the month. It's better to over save and at the end of the month if you're short for an expense, pay that expense out of savings. It's also harder to justify that spurge if you are taking it out of savings.

I live with my parents and I used to only pay them about $500 a month. They both work low wage jobs. I was saving up quite a bit till the rent and cost of food went up. They are asking for around $1500 a month now. I was thinking, if I'm gonna pay that much for rent then I might as well rent my own place. If I move out now, my parents would be short every month and they would ask me for money anyway -_-

Most of my wealth today was not because i saved every little penny i earned in the past. I honestly cannot imagine doing that! but came from the investments i consistently purchased over the years.
I would agree with you, but then the question becomes, how did you get the money to invest? You don't gain that capital by spending your entire paycheck. Either you save your money so that you can have the funds to invest, or to inherit money from your relatives to invest.
The goal is to invest 10% to 15% of your earnings a year, but if that's not realistic, at least start with the minimum initial investment.

And I left home forever to abroad, never returned, only for short holidays.
Now my parents are asking me to return to live there. (Many years since) I don’t get why?
I could not imagine to live with them again.
So, it is not only tough to live with kids, can be with parents as well.
But boy, would I chase my jobless kid away? (If she was not lazy and ungrateful?) no. I would let them to have easier living until they were ready to buy their own home, should they need, and were with right attitude. The spoilt kids, who sponge on their parents when old though-they deserve push out, to realise they need to learn to look after themselves-but I would not be the mean mum-only if I had devilish kids(which would be my fault)
I have seen many cases of kids only waiting until their parent dies, and visiting after really long time when those are on death bed, to see what inheritance to get. And parent lived lonely with carer visiting...

Nutritionist here. It’s a myth that we need to eat beef for iron to treat anemia. Im vegetarian and cured my anemia by eating Vitamin C rich foods with iron rich foods. Vitamin C increases the absorption of iron from foods.
So I recommend eating vitamin C foods like orange, strawberries, raw bell peppers, lime juice etc with iron rich foods in the same meal.
Not saying you have to cut out meat, but if you want to save money and reduce the chances of having anemia, this is a great way.
EDIT: Thank you all for your gracious comments. I believe what keeps us in fear is a lack of science and understanding of how iron works. For people interested in science and not opinions, I'll break down the differences of iron in meats v. plant sources:
*Why is iron different in meats v. plant foods?*
Heme iron is found in foods such as meat because it mainly comes from hemoglobin (from red blood cells) and myoglobin (from muscles). Non-heme iron is found primarily in plant foods and even milk products.
When we eat heme iron, it is easily taken up by the small intestinal cells as it is. On the other hand, non-heme iron has to be converted into a different form of iron (I'll get to that later) and then be taken up by an intestinal transporter called DMT1. However, DMT1 also takes up other nutrients like copper, zinc, etc. This means the non-heme iron is competing with other molecules, making it more challenging to be absorbed rapidly.
*Why does vitamin C help increase absorption of non-heme iron?* Mainly because heme iron contains Fe2+ (ferrous iron) while non-heme iron contains Fe3+ (ferric iron). The small intestines only absorb the iron we eat when it is in the Fe2+ state. Therefore, as pointed out earlier, DMT1 only takes up non-heme iron in the Fe2+ state. Vitamin C is able to donate a hydrogen ion to convert Fe3+ into Fe2+. This is why it is crucial to eat vitamin C with iron foods to better improve iron absorption.

@Laura Croft Yeah, red meat contains heme iron but the only difference is how much gets absorbed by your body. If you can find ways to get extra iron or increase the adsorption rate, you're less likely to develop a deficiency.

Glad I'm living in Norway. I work in a grocery store and get 205,77 NOK an hour. That's almost 24 US dollars. Keep in mind the dollar is strong at the moment. Of Course you'll get more when you work evenings and on saturdays. You get paid when you're sick. You get 5 weeks paid vacation. You get paid when you need to visit a doctor. You get paid when you're moving to a new apartment/house (moving day). You get paid when your child is sick. The list goes on and on.
You have many benefits that most grocery store cashiers and clerks could only dream of. I worked at two grocery stores (one was unionized too) and never got anything like that.
LOL. I make 8.50. no sick pay no vacation, of course, all cashiers are PT. The benefit I get is that they let me tell them when I'm available each semester and don't threaten to fire me because I only work weekends.

I got my phone service through cricket and I got the unlimited data plan. I pay $60 a month for my phone bill but don’t have to pay for internet because I just use my phone as a hot spot! I’m still able to watch Hulu (no cable) off my Xbox using my hot spot! No buffering and great quality. I love it

I'm saying in NY because I was told by someone that lives in another state that they only pay $45. They also have a plan that's about what you are paying now with tax. Once again it might just be $55 where you live. Honestly, the 45 dollar plan is enough for me. I still watch RUclips videos without any problems.
