- In this video, I'll show you how I have lived on $30 per week.
If you truly want to save money on food, pay close attention to this video as I show you some of my best practices for cooking.
Over time, as my food budget has increased, I have been able to afford organic, healthier foods than what you may see in this video.

A few things to note:
- I am not Gordon Ramsay
- We each have wildly different diets. I would assume that this diet may not work for everyone. I know plenty of people who choose to refrain from eating meat, gluten, carbs, etc.. At the end of the day, I try my best to consume any type of food in moderation. You may read a study today on how a certain food may cause cancer, only to hear the next week that people who eat that specific food live longer.
- As my income has increased, I have chosen to expand my food budget to $50+ per week so that I can choose more sustainable, healthier food options.
- You may have noticed that chicken took up nearly one-third of the expenses in this video. This may be anecdotal, but from my experience, eating less meat can be more cost-effective (and humane). If you choose to forgo meat entirely, make sure you are getting enough protein from other sources.
Use cutting board and sharpen that cheap knife. Thank me later.
Curious: What's your height?
Three things that may be game-changers in your kitchen in line with the cheap theme: a cheap cutting board, a cheap t-fal non-stick pan (great for eggs and pretty much everything you cooked here), a cheap/medium-priced chef's knife.

-Uses butter to heat up bagel
-Doesn’t use butter to prevent eggs from sticking
Ant D...so you think "eggs sticking" is the problem? Lower heat is the answer, not butter!!!!!!
Judy, Judy, Judy low heat wouldn’t make much a difference what he needs is a nonstick pan and the butter
@@Baconfacedgaming Don't be silly...of course the heat makes a difference. Look at the brown, crisp edges on the egg, only too high of heat does that!!! I think he IS ALREADY using a non stick pan, look again...the pan is one of those copper looking, non stick pans. Those are the best non stick pans he has ever used... & I do agree, he needs a little (very little) olive oil!
@@Baconfacedgaming I just went & check out the video again & you are right...I don't think it is non stick pan, but just a little olive oil & much lower heat will solve his problem with the eggs! We did not have non stick pans until I had cooked for a few years, so I know how to cook eggs in a pan that does stick...I'm 77 yrs. old & I do have a little experience with non stick. Olive oil, healthy for the heart, at least at this time they say that it is. Who knows what they will say next week about olive oil? Good suggestion you have made because non stick & some type of oil is good! Have a nice day Denzel!!!! Smiles, Judie
Almost smoking hot oil before you put the eggs in is the secret. Then turn the heat down. Baste the white and top of yolk with hot oil and don't flip. Crispy edges, runny yolks inside.

My top tips when it comes to saving money on food:
-Buy in season and local fruits and vegetables.
-Eat more legumes instead of meat and fish for protein.
-Make cheap carbs the base of your meals: rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, oatmeal...
-Freeze anything is about to go bad and save it for next week.
-When you think your fridge is empty, wait for one or two days more before you go grocery shoping, you will be amazed about how much you can make if you are a little more creative (plus, you can get rid of food that is going bad).
-Do a meal plan for the week, make a shopping list according to the plan, and only buy that.
-Eat healthy, but not fancy food. Nothing that didn't existed 40 years ago. It's not necessary.

Nate O'Brien: "I'm not too picky, so I'll eat it"
Also Nate O'Brien: "I will not eat a sandwich if it is not diagonal cut"
It looks better and is easier to hold and eat. I was reminded of the dark days long ago when schools were just beginning to abandon gendered classes like shop and home ec. A coach somewhere was quoted in a rant about the dangers to Western Civilization and survival of the human species--including the terrible consequences of Boys being taught to slice sandwiches with the diagonal GIRL cut!
AnnaDaisybird...OMG!!!! I like it too, but it tastes the same no matter HOW it is cut! Diagonal cut is sort of feminine for a guy!!!!!

As a single, older woman, I get a kick out of challenges that let you eat healthy AND cheap. It's fun to come up with new ideas. The family pack of chicken was smart, then, freeze the chicken breasts, individually. I also buy the family size (3 lbs) of hamburger, when that's on sale, and divide it up and freeze in 1/2 lb portions in sandwich baggies. Meal prepping is also nice, so you have food "ready to go". I cook 1 night a week, usually a chicken dish and either burger or fish dish, then tupperware up the leftovers for dinners the rest of the week. Soups, stews and chilis are great in the crockpot, and all cheap to make. Eggs, onions and potatoes are guarantees that you'll never starve, because they are so versatile. Fried taters/eggs for breakfast, baked potatoes, stuffed with cheese and whatever meat and/or veggies you have around. Onions flavor everything. Stir fries with rice/veggies and leftover meat. Cheese quesadillas are a fast and filling meal, ready in minutes, or make breakfast wraps with eggs/cheese rolled up in them. Boil chicken, then shred, and make chicken salad for sandwiches and/or add some to pasta with sauce. Hardboil eggs for devilled eggs, egg salad for sandwiches or dice to put in salads for extra protein. I ALWAYS buy a turkey at thanksgiving! At $.39/lb, don't think there's a cheaper meat out there, and for like $7, you can get a HUGE bird, roast, then pick it and freeze for later...turkey soup, turkey sandwiches, turkey salad, pot pie...etc. ONE turkey, picked and frozen, can literally last you for MONTHS! Look online for new recipes, and keep on cooking!!!! You're doing GREAT!
For a 22 year old he's got some good advice and does pretty good for himself. He's attempting to cook for himself and save money. Not many other guys his age do that.
You can survive off $10 per week in a mal-nutritious diet, it could save you some more money per week, at the expense of your health but you'll still survive. Only water and congee or water and potatoes for your life support will mean you can survive while saving money. I hope this works for 18-20 year olds.

Nate, tips on cooking those eggs; Use a little more butter on the pan and cook them on low heat. That's how you avoid getting the eggs stuck on the pan and you avoid burning them. The most important key is the heat, you have to cook them on low heat or you'll run into problems. You ever eat eggs from a Diner? That's basically how you get eggs with that same texture, taste and softness. BONUS, to get your eggs more fluffy, add in a bit of milk while you're mixing your eggs and you end up with delicious fluffy, non burnt, non stuck eggs lol.

I liked your video. You stated nicely that you are not a dietician and that was great to disclaim up front. I am studying to be an RD now and am not one either. From what I have been taught so far I’d say you did very well buying rice, frozen berries, oats, lettuce, oranges, spinach, and I loved how you made toast on the stove. Crock pots are really smart and easy. Potatoes absolutely are smart to buy as they are cheap and very satiating and your advice on onions was nice too.
My only thoughts is you could switch out the chicken, which is relatively expensive, for lentils which are very high in protein and super cheap. Also beans are super cheap and with rice there is no need to pay extra for the chicken. You’ll get all the protein you need from those plant based foods and then you could spurge on avocados, spices, or peppers for flavoring. You also suggested water which was great! That is the beverage of choice on the Harvard smart plate.
PB is a very smart food choice for someone on a budget. Try to get a PB that is just nuts and salt with no trans fats. Your pancakes were smart in terms of calories per dollar. However, with the money you’d save not eating chicken you could maybe afford whole wheat bread or buckwheat flour for your pancakes so there is more fibre and less refined white flour/sugar in your diet. Not bashing your diet. You’re doing very well here for the money and gave pretty solid advice. Plus just cooking at home you save money and can eat a healthier diet. Good stuff!

Thanks for this down to earth and inciteful video, I'm going to get a crock pot asap and probably start doing the same. I loved when you said you're not some chef like Anthony Bourdain. So often online I've noticed over the years, and, this is cringey that people even do this, but people really try and rag and down and belittle others for preferring simple low effort meals and meal plans. I guess to try and seem and act superior to others... I'm one of those that just CANNOT find it in me to all-day meal prep or all-day cook, it stresses me out very badly. I was getting snide remarks from wannabe chefs to the point where I don't even talk about food or what I eat around people since I kind of have some bad experiences from even talking about my food. Like you said, a wannabe chef is more than welcome to come cook for me if they want to, but until they do I'm going for simple cheap meals. "my metabolism is like a furnace"
Can't relate xD

Great video. I would also suggest some raman. Boil the noodles for like 20 seconds (while the water is hot), drain and set aside. In a skillet, scramble some eggs and garlic in canola oil. Add the boiled raman and drizzle the sauce packet and add a tablespoon of butter. Turn off heat and stir for 30 seconds. I lived off this recipe in college.
Nate I like my crockpot/slow cooker. That is what I like about it is that when's you get home the meal isn't easy. Please use a board, plastic or wood for cutting foods. And I suggest you include celery in your crockpot as it, with carrots and onion not only adds natural salt but is the base of any sauce. Then add a knob of butter, a squeeze of half a lemon, alternatively a few drops of Apple Cider vinegar to add flavour to your meal. When you cook carrots on their own try adding some soya sauce, a knob of butter and sugar and glazing your carrots.
Instead of generalizations, I would’ve preferred you to show concretely how those ingredients you bought for $35 lasted you an entire week by showing exactly what meals you made from them for each day for 5 days (breakfast, lunch and dinner and/or what meals carried over from leftovers). Because to me, it didn’t seem like they would’ve stretched for a whole week, even including leftovers into a next day or two.
Nicholas8282 the brothers green has a great video on how to eat for $3/day and it’s fancier and more veggie rich
Rice and beans would last at least the whole week for 1 person for dinner. Chicken and cheese quesidillas for lunch. Pancakes, pb and j's, spinach and cheese omelets, chicken and rice soup
That whole thing of oatmeal will last for at elast a week if you eat it everyday for breakfast, add the frozen fruit to it or the banana. You just have to be creative and look at what he bought and imagine what it can be.
He can also make grilled cheese sandwhiches, a salad with the spinach, cheese, chicken and carrots. And etc.
@@shayslay3416 You are woke!
Wow. Very cool helpful details. So amazing. Good to know. I enjoyed the video.
Thank you. This is a very well made video. I'm also trying to figure out keeping my grocery budget down to usd 160 a month max. God bless!
My cheap hack as a grad student in Australia: eat one meal a day lol
deni ormanza I did this for years throughout high school and everyone found me crazy. Yeah, I wake up hungry, the hunger goes away by afternoon and after school, I'd make a massive meal. Then I'd be good till around the same time the next day
I'm very active I have to eat lest 4 to 5 double meals and I'm still hungry bloody expensive having a high motabalism.
deni ormanza.....Ya! that's good for you!!!! I hear students also eat a lot of Ramin Noodles....Mmmm good?
Search: Intermittent Fasting. I did it and I felt great! There have been studies that show that if you eat 2x a day(what I would recommend) you live longer that people that eat more. Think of our ancestors hundreds and hundreds of years ago...u think they had so much food ALL the time? Eating 1x a day is called OMAD fasting btw. ✌🏼
Been doing that for a long time. My wallet loves me but people think I'm weird lol idc
You definitely need a chopping board to chop your veggies , they aren’t expensive and it would be safer than cutting over your crock pot 😁
He could get one at dollar tree.
@@STMARTIN009 definitely 👌🏻
😂😂😂
He can’t afford it… he’s on a “$30” budget
You’re definitely on the right track. Keep up the good work.
This is the second video of yours I've watched. I clicked (again) because you didn't start off with an over-sugared "What's up guys! Welcome back to my channel...." etc, (you know the type).
You give sensible advice. Where I live, eating out is cheaper than cooking for myself, but it's not as healthy. My biggest vice is beer!!
him "i really hate this place but it has the cheapest food possible"
me "finally my hourly wage is 7.50 and I can shop at the fancy ass Walmart! instead of the dollar store!"
Your comment killed me!!!
Lol Aldis is my go to when I’m feeling a little less poor than usual.
Walmart is luxury for me 😂 aldi's is cheaper and organic is cheaper there too
Lol my top places are Walmart, Winco, and the 99 cent store. 😂😂 Then when I want to splurge a bit, Bel-Air, Safeway, Sprouts, Whole Foods.
Yikes I hope you get a different job. The lowest I've ever worked for is 8.25, my first two or three jobs. Never doing that again. My current one pays about 14.25 and it's just barely enough but I'm getting better at assessing where my money is going. I'm also really lucky to get benefits and a 401k. But even I'm looking for something better, hopefully to do with the degree I'm studying for
That rice doesn’t even last 4 days in the hands of a Hispanic.😂
Luisanna Gomez or Asian 😂
Or a Haitian, or an Asian. Pretty much for anyone nonCaucasian
Jii-El I completely understand and he did a great job with this video. The little rice bag was funny to me because as Hispanic, I have never even bought that little rice. I eat very similar and budget my grocery just like him (except the rice, I buy the biggest bag that can last a month or two), In this house we spend 30-40 in food for only 2 people.
Or African!
Jii-El I want to say yes, but we go on and off. I got lazy😬 We do ride bikes, play basket, or walk once a week. We save so much because we don’t buy juice, snacks, almost nothing organic, or anything frozen. And he is very correct, most great value things are just as good as any other expensive brand.
Great video. Thank you so much for the tips.
I love your breakfast idea. I try to watch cheese, but love it. I can just sprinkle light cheese and get that flavor. Great tips today!
This is the kind of content I wish I had when I moved out of my parents house. It points out just how easy it is to live cheap, and save money even on the basics. Cool video dude, keep it up.
Kitten Lyric you can get all that for less then what he got lol u just gotta look hard
This video was okay? It just kept getting dumber. The second he even mentioned whole foods you knew he was out of touch. You can live on less then 30 a month. Start with seasoning, then just two pasta or rice dishes per week spread across days with sandwiches in the middle. Cereal for breakfast. Shop every sunday/monday. Rinse and repeat. Can acutually give recipes other than this video only made as a means of content with no real info
We need some of Nate’s cooking episodes lol 😂 it was hilarious!
Thanks!!!
Nate. Love your videos
Def need a Nate Cooking spin off channel.
Dry foods (Oats, Rice, Barley, Lentles, Beans, herbs and spices, tea or coffee) Canned foods (Tomatoes, Mushrooms, vegetables)
Frozen foods, (Meat such as Chicken, pork, lamb, beef whatever is in your budget, fish as well. Dont be afraid to butcher to portions).
Fresh foods (fruit, dairy).
Build your food around long term storage and a core number of meals then supliment with perishables as and when needed.
Freeze leftovers and recook later.
Some of these things could be in multiple categories.
365 days in a year so you need per person that many breakfasts, lunch, and dinners. Just build the core of your diet and remember you can plan for special occasions, holidays, birthdays by doing different things.
thanks for the tips, keep up the good work
"This is worth 30 bucks and will last me a week" - proceeds to cook a breakfast with bagel, eggs and butter that he didn't buy. Noice.
He did mention that he wasn't going to buy everything in this one trip and already had stuff back in the apartment.
Alex P and potato
Trance88 he showed us the $30 worth and he used stuff that wasn’t there. Plain and simple, if you add up the B-roll and the stuff he says he bought without footage and prices, way over budget.
Kitten Lyric facts. It’s $30 and some of my normal groceries lmao
You dont already have butter n shit at home already?
Also, preparing something in the crock-pot in the morning will reduce any temptations to eat out at night. When I have a craving, I usually just say, “oh shit, I have food waiting for me at home.” Great video Nate!
Well done 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼simple n nutritional 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼thanks for sharing
to add a few extra nutrients, you could grow a basil plant in the window, it adds good flavor naturally. It only costs 3-5 dollars each and they last all summer. and if you grow alot you can freeze them in a ziploc.
When he said to just simmer your bagels I had to laugh. He’s adorable.
Watching him cut those potatoes over that crockpot took a solid five decades off of my life. So I guess I no longer need to save money.
I'll be moving out soon. Thanks a lot man! Also i must point out that while yes whole foods is more expensive, it's also heavily organic favoring.
Points at Wal-Mart, literally has everything. “i ReAlLY HatE ThiS PlaCe”
“The important thing to remember” 😂
I like this guy. So I subscribed.
He makes sense out of simple things that “we know” but we tend to ignore.
Like if your money is low don’t purchase organic food and shop blindly.
Be basic, be realistic. Word!
Are you serious right now? He literally talks about one thing and does the complete opposite every single video.
