Great pilot, stayed calm, chose the go around rather than land at any cost. In WWI the Germans utilized large round fields, so that which ever way the wind was, you could land into it.
That was going wrong the minute it was rolled out the hanger, utter madness flying a triplane in conditions like that and even attempting a cross wind. Bet he wont do that in a hurry again!
You would be surprised how well the rudder works on a DR1 if you have ever flown one, but you 100 percent right it's not a plane to try and land in any crosswind. It's also easy to adverse yaw if you don't mixed the ailerons with the rudder properly, it's a plane that is tiring to fly as it needs you to be constantly working.
For God's sake it's a bloody DR1 - you HAVE to land them into wind - designed in the days when airfields were just that and not 'prevailing wind' runways. The DR1 is unstable (for a reason) and designed for 1917 - you cannot fly it with a 21 century mentality. It's also limited to zero crosswind for a reason. (Have you seen the size of the rudder?) I presume the helpful 'Chuck Yeager' style voice-over was provided by the crash crew?
Why on earth land out of wind in a machine that was designed to land purely into wind ? the last attempt was a near crash as it was kiting down vertically, you can land a Dr.1 in a few yards 'into wind'
I think I recognize the field and the airplane. Looks like KCOI, Merritt Island, Fl. I know the guy and his son that built this plane. The plane was built at Rockledge airport - 3 miles away. A woman bought this plane for her husband as a birthday present. Good to see it all again. Made many takeoffs and landings at this field. N-6395T
@@mikewhite4628 WHAT?! This guy showed excellent judgement. Lesser pilots would have tried to force the landing and end up ground looping and crashing the plane. He obviously knew the crosswind was too much which is why he ended up just landing in the grass. You can't control the wind - it could have easily been a calm day when and where he took off. What did you expect him to do? Just jump out?
Difficult to watch. There is a strong instinct to stick to the airports defined runways which he clearly tried to do. What got him down was when he diregarded convention and landed into the wind. It saved him and the plane.. Did ATC reprimand him for not landing on the runway? Not likely..Recently Sept 2019 , a lovely Draco STOL was ruined because of this instinct when he to should have just taken off into the wind.
I saw that crash of Draco! As much as it hurt to see it, that airplane performed exactly how Mike designed it. The landing gear absorbed all of the energy, protecting the passengers from anything but bruises. Mike said afterwards he should have just taken off across the runway... he would have been airborne before he crossed it.
Mikey McBryan, of Buffalo Airways fame, is rebuilding a replica DR1 that crashed and came to him as a crate of smashed parts. Hope you’re watching this Mikey !!
Just a pot or red paint, crosses and three wings don´t make a Fokker. Not sure what kind of wannabe Fokker he flew there, but the pilot certainly was either good or lucky not to crash it. A rotary powered plane would have probably been scattered to pieces the first try.
It is almost impossible to land Dr I in such crosswind. It is so light you cannot crab, you are blown away in the last moments, and wing is too low to put is below the wind. Old grass fields didnot have runways, you coud always land with headwind. I would recomment to the author to put some music there to video instead that stupid comments.

dumb pilot trying to show off skill then floating down the entire runway bouncing hard then going sideways litterally and doing a go around just divert

That's an interesting fact @ the round German airfields, to accommodate all wind directions. Straight up logic -
Thx.
nice guys, laughing at the poor bastard who's struggling to get himself and his plane down in one piece ...
Hey...any landing you can walk away from..nice job...good thing he’s patient..and a good airman.
That was going wrong the minute it was rolled out the hanger, utter madness flying a triplane in conditions like that and even attempting a cross wind. Bet he wont do that in a hurry again!
Obviously the laughing guys are not pilots.
Nice video. I always tell my tailwheel students, if you can't get it landed on the runway, land it into the wind.
There is a reason aircraft of this vintage landed & took off from large paddocks and not runways...

Mein Gott. I can't land!!!!!.
And also, when you make a replica smaller than the original, it doesn't get easier to fly. It gets harder.
I think he did the best he could... Even the RC version will weather vein into the wind just as bad... At least he kept it going..
That DR1 has waaaay more power than in 1917.
He handled the plane about as well as you handled the video camera.
Cross winds make camera handling a bitch!!
All those attempts to find out what all the early pilots knew.
Fly to a different airport with a runway more aligned with the current wind direction? Yikes that was hard to watch.
He finally figured out you don't land those old planes crosswind-back in the day, the airfields were big meadows where they didn't need to.
These planes weren't designed for a runway, but a air field ! , glad the pilot figured that out befour the plane got wrecked.

The “field” was termed an AERODROME ! Once landed a lite airplane across the width of a heavy’s runway.
good bit of flying, saved the plane
With all due respect this was not good piloting. He should have known that this a/c cannot land cross wind.

In the tail down landing situation the already inadequate rudder is shielded by the fus3lage!
That's the why of a wheel landing...
Excellent airmanship!
Leave it to the ground-bound to ridicule like a bunch of jerks. To the pilot, find another airfield.
Yep. That one is full of toxic people
EXCELENTE PILOTO.
Interesting to see . Finally got it down . Cowling looks strange
Awesome job of finally getting it down..👍
Someone should teach you how to use your recording device.
Stating the obvious????? Wind?? Me thinks u are an arm chair general?
Smart move landing into wind!
@Keith Schick No kidding!
I’m talking about the last attempt, ie: the successful one.

That's a good pilot!
WILL YOU GET OUT OF THE WAY?!
Time to go somewhere where you can land into the wind.
I'm betting it isn't in one piece. I suspect the seat cushion is TOAST!
William Smith I’m betting the seat had a little poo on it.
The shit was running down both legs
I agree.... those ass cheeks done chewed that thing up and shat it down his legs!
Great job... Love the Fokker
Why not divert to a another airport with runway into the wind? Or land on a taxiway?
Mikey McBryan, of Buffalo Airways fame, is rebuilding a replica DR1 that crashed and came to him as a crate of smashed parts.
Hope you’re watching this Mikey !!
Time to change his shorts, his pants and probably the seat cushion too!!!!
Aren’t you supposed to go elsewhere to land if the wind is too bad?
yes, to a pub, and forget about flying that day.
Fuel management maybe a consideration (?)
Just a pot or red paint, crosses and three wings don´t make a Fokker. Not sure what kind of wannabe Fokker he flew there, but the pilot certainly was either good or lucky not to crash it. A rotary powered plane would have probably been scattered to pieces the first try.
Love that bird!!!!
"he wont get too old" - that is what i thought as well :))
I didn't know you could land a DR1 crosswind - well, couldn't, but . . . . . .
'Come on Fokker, get down... get down!'
At 0:52 towards the end the video pixelates
Sorry I meant 3:51
those planes were never landed cross wind. They landed in a field not a runway
Too many wings on that plane
For gods sakes , into the wind !! On the grass .... DR1’s don’t like crosswinds .

Tough little fokker.....
I got the Fokker!
Pl more videos
It seemed he would not cut the throttle, and let the plane settle.
I’m amazed 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Suou a camiseta mas pousou!
MANICACA?!
Shouldn't be flying on a day like that
it looks like an rc airplane landing and hovering like a chopper.....not sure about this. j
wow
Nice airplane, but the pilot doesn't look realistic.

Only a moron would attempt a crosswind landing in one of those.
FANTÁSTICO DRAMÁTICO, BRASIL OK.
😨😨😨😨😨😨
No funny
What would be so hard about finding another runway aligned with the wind? Dumb piloting if you ask me
Fuel load?
This is not funny. I couldn’t laugh at this guy
It would help if he didn't try to land the thing half way down the runway. For God's sake start the approach earlier.
dumb pilot trying to show off skill then floating down the entire runway bouncing hard then going sideways litterally and doing a go around just divert
Well,if you need an airport, perhaps find one without a crosswind; or land on the grass as he did; B 18 pilot...
