This plane, F1-102, was one of the 3 initial Triplanes made. This one was given to Richthofen to evaluate. F1- 103 was issued to Werner Voss for evaluation. Both pilots loved the Triplane which was nimble, but tough to fly. Voss was killed in his Triplane while dogfighting with 6 or 7 British SE5a fighters. I believe in September 1917. He was twenty years old.
Nice info, thanks.
20 years 0ld barley a man
And Kurt Wulff was killed, in THIS triplane, Sept 15. MvR was on leave and Wulff was just getting back from a wound leave and eager to try the plane. His very first fight was with some Sopwith Camels and one of them shot him down. Voss was shot down Sept 23, and there was no more 'frontline evaluation."
The British pilot (appears at 5:08, left of screen) is my grandfather. He was 21 at the time. It is amazing the way they laughed and chatted - having just tried to kill each other - then all went off to have breakfast together, before he was handed over to the authorities and sent to POW camp. Not only the plane had been hit; a bullet passed through the sleeve of my grandfather's jacket.
Nice story, thanks.
wat was his name?? very nice!
Is this true? If so nice
What was your grandfather's name?
Lucky chap. No wonder he looks relieved to be on the ground in one piece.
1:45 when he removes his cap, you can see that Richtofen has some sort of string securing a patch to the top of his head. He had been struck in the head by a stray bullet fired from a British 2-seat aircraft, and crash-landed his plane while mostly unconscious. The bullet smashed a trench in his skull, and he suffered severe headaches as a result of broken pieces of skull pinching his brain. Doctors had to remove the broken pieces on several occasions.
Many believe that the traumatic injury he suffered caused him to develop severe tunnel vision, which may explain why he chased the Canadian pilot's plane at low altitude over enemy anti-aircraft fire, leading to his death from a rifle bullet through his chest. Captain Brown was originally credited for that, as he had briefly pursued Richtofen's plane, but the claims were already highly disputed at the time Brown was awarded.
Contrary to popular belief, Richtofen did not go down in flames or crash and explode on the ground after being shot. He actually executed a sharp turn and attempted to bring his plane back to friendly lines before crash-landing. His plane was mostly intact after landing but was severely damaged by souvenir hunting Australian soldiers. It is believed that it was restored and put on display in a museum after the war, but was destroyed during the chaos of WWII.
I'd also read that he suffered from severe bouts of depression after the accident, yet even with that he was still as efffective as he'd ever been.
good info!
Josias von Leiswolf Almost correct. The triplane he crashed in, 425/17 was souvenired heavily, and was not reconstructed.
One of his triplanes, 152/17 survived him and was placed on display in the Zeughaus Museum in Berlin. It was damaged by allied bombing on 22/23 November 1943 and it's remains were probably destroyed by Russian troops at the end of the war.
Auf geht's Deutschland
Hey he preyed on less manouverable British 2 seater reconnaissance aircraft, he made the mistake of getting too close to the observer's machine gun and took a bullet in his skull. He died, we won Germany lost. That's war.
A little bit of trivia. In 1967 I was assigned, as a US Army captain, to Mainz, Germany to an installation that used to be a German Kaserne. The square in front was named the Baron Manfred Von Richtofen Platz. Now I knew that all Nazi names were expunged but it seems that the "Red Baron," who preceded all that, was held in such high regard, by all soldiers, that his name was left alone.
Maybe because he lived long before there was such a thing as a Nazi in Germany
WOW... The Red Baron himself. What a great clip, wish there was sound back in that time. 😀
Eventhough it has no sound this video still unpriceless
I love these videos. You grow up reading about these guys and being able to see them at their craft is mesmerizing 👍
Wow...I can't believe this exists!
Not as glitzy as Hollywood but it’s the real deal …
The video of the year!! Specially when next year will be the 100th anniversary of the Red Baron's death.
That was 6 years ago man
How has the time passed!
If I'm not mistaken, this footage was shot in Marke, Belgium, near to the French border. It's only 5 miles from where I live...
yes.
It's thousands of miles from where I live. The Great White North.
Fascinating footage thank you for sharing it
Quite the historical footage for the annals of the history of flight!
Excellent video. It’s well restored. Von Richtoffen was of noble birth, as were most flight officers. One can see by his mannerisms his upbringing.
led zeppelins 2nd album has richtovens fighter squadron on the Cover
it started out looking like a scramble, but as it slowed down, don't think that enemy aircraft were incoming
MvR scored his 60th and 61st victories in Fok. F.I 102/17 after which he went on leave, turning this plane over to Ltn. Kurt Wolff, who was killed flying this plane. 102/17 carried the factory paint scheme of Green streaked over light blue doped linen with a green cowling, struts and wheel covers. Subsequent tripes were delivered in the factory scheme, after which the Jasta 11 colors of red cowling, struts and wheel covers were painted. Personal markings were in addition to the Jasta colors.
All the preparation getting his gear on with the flight crew member securing his seat belt harness...all without a parachute. The Germans donned them, but only during the last six weeks of the war. German Ace 'Ernst Udet' had his life saved flying with one during his WW1 service.
Very cool to see something like this. Thank you!!!
I wish they would do a modern lip reading of Richtofen's words. Even if they are somewhat trivial, it may be insightful. They've already done this for other historical figures...

Technically speaking its an F.1 triplane not the Dr1 production version later supplied ....
Right!!
It's one of the prototypes you can see the number on the side FI 102.
Richthofen gave it to his friend Kurt Wollf who died in it, and Voss died in FI 103.
Aces will come and go. But there will only ever be one Red Baron
Anthony Fokker himself filmed the part with the test flight at the start of this clip, as told in September Evening by Barry Diggens.
Great footage . Thanks for posting
It is amazing that this footage has survived. Thank you for the post.
Amazing footage
I Love WW1 Aircraft and dogfights .... great aces on both sides of the battle!
for sure, some of this aces used to write admiration letters to them rivals
@@janmn6910 cool 😎 I didn’t know that, great to see respect amongst rivals and great aces..🙂
At min 3.05 a young Hermann Göring on the left 😉
I noticed that too! 👍
@@Noscams00 Yep saw him straight away he shot down 22 allied planes in WW1.
@@ruongluesteve Years before he became a crossdressing morphine addict.
They were really crazy driving those rotary motors.... understeering at maximum...the gyro effect being tremendous...
Gotta love those WWI rotary radial engines. The crankshaft was fixed to the airframe while the propeller was bolted to the crankcase and cylinders which rotated with the prop as you can see at 4:00 . Since they didn't need additional cooling system components they had a higher power-to-weight ratio than the liquid cooled engines used in other fighters such as the SE5a. Unfortunately there were some significant disadvantages associated with this type.
One of the disadvantages was that it constantly spat oil out as it ran. With the engine spinning it was impossible to contain the oil in an an oil pan. And the oil used was Castor Oil which makes on nauseous when ingested. The pilots would be sprayed with the oil while in flight.
I’m sure it’s a typo, but that’s a rotary engine, not a radial. And for further clarification, it’s not a Wankel.
@@kyflyboy965 Yes it is a radial engine. The cylinders point outwards radially from the centerline of the crankshaft just like a conventional radial engine. I often say rotary radial to avoid confusion with the Wankel.
Very interesting. Apparently the damaged plane was shot down perhaps by R? The man in a different uniform was probably the English or French pilot. Uniform looks English to me.
respect from KURDİSTAN.great man ''red knight''
Manfreds mother warned him about showing off.
This was shot in 1917 and the film looks better than 1977 Star Wars
Are you sure or not?
No it doesn't!
this is more entertaining at least
@@dacosta0656 No, Star Wars is more entertaining. And it looks better.
You obviously are joking.
Great and fascinating vintage footage of the great ace himself! That suit looks extremely bulky and cumbersome. It's hard to argue with 88 confirmed kills!
The British chap is lucky, not a lot of Manfred's victories lived to tell about it.
Schluesselmensch jawhol, extreme fortunate flier.
Yeah maybe he survived the war. Lucky.
Almost none of the early WWI pilots lived to tell about it...including Richtofen himself.
@@drott150 Ernst Udet and err... uuh...

Me and the boys getting ready for our field trip to France
Fokker F1. There are differences. Dr1 was the production version.
I am also a volunteer with the Minter Field Air Museum, a non profit organization. We would like to display your video in front of our Fokker Dr1 triplane. could you give us permission and directions to download your video. thanks
+allen anderson yes no problem, you can use it.
+Panzerargentino1 any suggestions on a program to download? Real player wont do it. Thanks

+Panzerargentino1 Thank you from the Minter Field Air Museum (like us on Facebook).
Forever my childhood hero. Brave, heroic, skillful and honorable
I have a motorized bike and I have a red gas tank with the German cross and some Red Baron decals. I'd love to throw them on my bike but considering the current political climate I'm afraid I'd be sending the wrong message with my choice. I'm going with the P40 Tomahawk look instead.
In the 'briefing' scene, it obvious that they can't take it seriously. Soldiers have always made poor actors in such times. Nothing ever changes in that regard!
I agree. Actually the military salute by M.v R seems pretty unnatural.
@@Panzerargentino1 I bet they never really saluted in such mission briefings. There is such a _we are being filmed, we need to salute for the cameras_ feel to it.
If this film was taken on 3rd September 1917, this was the day on which MvR won his 61st victory - a Sopwith Pup of 46 Squadron RFC flown by Lt. AF Bird. Lt. Bird was attacked by two triplanes at 14,000 at 6.35am, his engine was badly shot up and he crashed into a tree on forced landing, being slightly wounded in the crash, and was taken prisoner. Another pup of the same patrol was also shot down, by Lt. Mohnicke, and that pilot was captured, too.
So good chance that the British pilot shown is either Lt. Bird or Lt. Mohnicke if this was actually filmed on Sept. 3rd 1917
I would like to comment on the color of 102 as well as 103 (Voss' plane). I have always been under the impression these two planes were olive streaked over an entire light blue plane...while all the regular production DR-1's were Olive streaked over a natural clear coated fabric and only the underside of the plane was light blue. Does anybody know anything about this?
Great footage, thanks for sharing.
Note though that the Fokker is an F.1, not Dr.1.
German aircraft was superior to anything the Allies had, Spad, SE-5, Bristol, Nieuport or Jenny.
A slim, trim and fit Hermann Goering has a short cameo on this film. He should have quit while he was ahead.
Cool, cool, cool, cool.....so cool! I love it!
Do I see Tom Cruise In that group of pilots?
you see those machine Guns ,,..the Best Stuff::::::::::::
Handsome fellow
I wonder if that was his kill? Ok i have seen this he's standing with the pilot he shot down!!! VERY COOL!!!!!
That has to be one of the greatest things i have ever seen
"An aeroplane is an interesting toy, but of no military value." --- Ferdinand Fochs, Field Marshal, Supreme Commander of the WWI Allied Expeditionary Forces. And was that Goering toward the end?
In fairness, the airplane was not a significant military factor during WWI - it was a ground war first and foremost. Even today, wars are mostly fought and won on the ground.
Its nice to see my own plane
😄😄😄😄
@Josias , the plane was totally destroyed by Aussie 's taking it down to the fame . Many items are in Austrialian (sic) souvenir hunters> They made many items out of them. A great and correct ending is by P.J. Carisella and James W. Ryan 'Who Killed the Red Baron?' paperbacks are at places l9ike Amazon. Films and other books have came up with the same ending!
Me and the bois preparing for flight to Austria be like:
Aparece bien clarito a la derecha quien fuera el último comandante de la escuadrilla - German Goering.
Excelente documento
This material is a jewel
Cool the way the crew is oiling the engine with a small oil can 😀😀
Amazing to see this.
.... more videos of the D.vI, please.
Is this Marckebeeke aerodrome?
Probably.
Deux légendes du ciel avion et pilote
Is that Tony Fokker at the end?
He is the one with the leather helmet to the right.
Respect to all the bloody Red Barron's victims ....RIP ....if it was an Aussie who got him ..." Good on ya mate "
2 yrs ago forensic testing confirmed us anzacs did it

Such weapons gave the Germans, who first used them, an advantage aloft until the Allies developed similar arms.
The Red Baron now fly’s with the Valkyrie…….. Valkyrien lento

Is that Goering in the finally frames with the captured British pilot? To the Brit pilot's left (from out perspective).
David Malone No. Goring appears at 3.05 min.
David Malone ja das ist Herman Göring
+Panzerargentino1
That sure looks like Goering frame left at 3:05, but he wasn't awarded the Pour le Merite until May 1918.
David Malone I did not see anyone in that final scene that looked like Goering. I did see one officer with really pronounced cheek bones (like Goering), but looks more like one of the pilots from the briefing scene. Anthony Fokker made all these films and that party scene with Goering looks like it was accidentally spliced in. Videography (or whatever it was called back then) was a very big hobby for Fokker. Some of the best German video footage in WWI was his. Yes, he’s the goofy looking one teasing the British pilot.
Aussie's finally got him, where many others failed.
Zu Ehre Helde

Genau. 👍
