    R9 was absolutely breathtaking in his prime years. Just an absolutely devastating player that was incredibly gifted and just built different. Most Brazilians are great dribblers but don’t have the physicality to match it, Ronaldo was the exception. The man was lightning quick, strong, could score off both feet, could dribble as good as anybody, had the Brazilian flair, could head the ball and most importantly was a freak of nature. Words can’t describe how good this man was, just pure elegance and he oozed class. I’ve never seen a player with so much raw natural ability that was built for football quite like him. Neymar and Messi are both pure natural talent as well but R9 in his prime was just footballing beauty. Incredible player

I never said Neymar was close to R9, no other striker in history is close to R9 except arguably Lewa and Luis Suarez (both players have the stats but football is about more than stats which is why I said R9 was the best striker of all time). I’ve only compared Neymar and Messi’s natural talent, nothing to do with are they close to R9 I’m literally just saying the natural talent they have is the closest I can think of to R9’s level of natural ability along with Maradona, Ronaldinho etc

    Ronaldo scored 47 goals in 48 matches as a 19-year old in his first season at FC Barcelona(1996/ 1997)
    And what is even crazier: before he joined FC Barcelona he already scored 44 goals in 47 matches at Cruzeiro(Brazil) and 54 goals in 57 matches at PSV (Hollanda/Eredivisie).
    At age 20, he scored around 160 goals in Brazil, Holland and Spain combined.

      His first 3 clubs he averaged 0.92 GPG. Ridiculous really. It dropped to about 0.74 when he went to Italy but that was in the best defensive / lowest scoring league in the world. Then he got injured. Overall, his GPG is similar to CR7, but that includes his post injury stats too.

    Having lived the times to see Cristiano, Messi, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Neymar, Kaka and a lot of other absolute great players play, the R9 before the injury was the absolute best I’ve ever witnessed. As a 14 year old PSV fan, this guy took my breath away when he came to Eindhoven and totally changed the way I experienced the game untill then. And that’s even after the Romario era and I had the privilege to see them play in our stadium.
    Now Cristiano and Messi are absolute legends for being consistent for over 16 years, that’s just mindblowing. But purely based on the game, R9 is truly the one and only Fenomeno. Such a shame he got injured, but even after that he managed to get back on top.

It was just a much rougher game with the yellow and red cards being used less. Today its harder to play defense because you cant rely on those dirty tactics. I dont know if Ronaldo would have had a healthy career had they protected players back then, I think his explosiveness was just too much for his joints.

    I remember Inter with Ronaldo played against my home team Spartak Moscow back in 1998. Sure we wanted our side to win and I remember the concern that every chance the defense line loses focus can be and will be immediately and lethally used by the guy.

    I once heard a doctor say that the injuries he suffered were just a matter of time, he was not gonna be able to avoid them. The Dr. said this was due to the things he did on the pitch, at the speed he used to play and the explosiveness he had just weren't normal and weren't sustainable for a human body. His body was gonna give up sooner or later.

      The thing is that when you run that fast and quickly change directions at that speed on some potato field it places enormous stress on your knees. They are still stressed on a smooth surface, but a lot less because each step lands reliably.
      Unfortunately, the San Siro in the late 90s was notorious for the atrocious state of the pitch. Just watch some of the footage and you will see it easily. And it wasn't just the San Siro, there was much worse elsewhere, and most stadiums in Italy had very low-quality grass.
      So it is no coincidence that he broke down once he moved to Italy. He still probably would have eventually broken down had he stayed in Barcelona, but his chances to last longer were better there.

    • @GM53946
      @GM53946 Год назад +2

      It was a matter of time indeed, in fact people were predicting it already in the winter of the 96-97 season when he was still with Barcelona -- precisely with the argument that he runs too fast and his knees will blow up. Which they eventually duly did.

    You have world players of the years like Zidane,Ronaldinho,Kaka, legends, coaches who have won Champions leagues or coached current generation Messi or CRonaldo and they all say Phenomenon is the best they had ever seen. Sheesh, even Zlatan has a man-crush on the guy. Michael Owen who is Euro player of the year even said he is the best he had ever seen and made it a point he was talking about the Brazilian Ronaldo. The whole French National team who end up winning the word cup are just in awe of Ronaldo and talk about him like his is a magician. Take note Ronaldo played in the era of legendary defenders such as Maldini,Nesta, Stam, Desailly and Ronaldo had two major knee injuries.
