- Lieutenant Pigeon are an English novelty musical group popular in the early 1970s, originating from Coventry.
A spin-off from an experimental music band Stavely Makepeace, the group was fronted by Rob Woodward and managed by him and drummer Nigel Fletcher. Other members included bassist Stephen Johnson. The group's sound was dominated by a heavy honky-tonk-style piano played by Woodward's mother, Hilda.
Lieutenant Pigeon achieved two UK hits: "Mouldy Old Dough", written by Woodward with bandmate Fletcher, which reached number one in 1972, followed by "Desperate Dan" (number 17 in 1973). Both tracks were largely instrumental, with the titles providing virtually the only lyrics. "Mouldy Old Dough" (the title being an adaptation of the 1920s jazz phrase, "vo-de-o-do") became the second biggest selling UK single of the year, behind The Band of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards' bagpipe version of "Amazing Grace".
Hilda Woodward died, aged 85, on 22 February 1999. She was aged 58 at the time of "Mouldy Old Dough" topping the charts, which made her one of the oldest female artists to feature on a UK number one single.

Hilda Woodward, Rob's mother was my Piano tutor in 1965, on that fantastic piano in her front room in Coventry, happy days !!
Hilda Woodward died, aged 85, on 22 February 1999. She was aged 60 at the time of "Mouldy Old Dough" topping the charts, which made her one of the oldest female artists to feature on a UK number one single.
Natnekker nice piece of additional information.
And deservedly so! God Bless her
respect to Hilda
We pray for her🙏🙏🙏💜💜
Only 60?!
Lost my Mother at that age. Horrible shock.
Cóż byłby wart świat bez tych pięknych piosenek ❤miałam 11lat słuchaliśmy radia, Luksemburg 😢❤❤❤
Never get sick of hearing it
WE HAVE GOOD TASTE IN MUSIC
God you need help!
@@HarvestHome2000 If he/she (I presume he, being Roland) does, then so do I. Nostalgic love is a great thing.
It's genius, everything ties in ❤
As a retired baker I have always found this song to be profoundly melancholic.
Brilliant sir! May your loaves rise to meet you 🍞

Always loved this, what makes it even better is that his mum is on stage with her son rocking out this now iconic piece of music loved by banger racers everywhere
we got a young lad at work and we were talking about music and he shocked me that he knew this song....he said its always played at banger racing......who knew...
What's even more lovable about this one clip is guitar guy wearing the obligatory "platform" heels, in multicolor, even more !!
It's not gone. It's here forever. Great to see so many LP fans
This has to be the most British 'pop' song ever! Mad, eccentric, effective and much-loved.
@Stephen Spark. This is why I loved this song; for it's typical British pub sound.
I’d say Safety Dance is a close-runner.
@@stevenlangley8646 Got that on my playlist too!
Sounds even greater than ever. Wonderful memories of a sadly bygone age.
Great years they were
I'll never tire of this.
Shame that I was just two and in the pushchair at the time!
Don't laugh but this is actually a beautiful piece of music.
Not laughing it was and when you hear it never get it out of your head for the rest of the day !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its feckin brill xx
I love it xxxbang it out at home xx
Love.hilda playing opposite her son xx
@@Sunshine123x God bless her.
Amazing remember it when it was a hit , just a piece of music that stays with you. People listening to it for the first time must be thinking what were they doing back in the 70’s
We were living.
I was growing up during that era - born in 1970 and so just two and in the pushchair here. Playing with my toys and not old enough to understand or remember that period first time round!
I adore this record. My Mum bought it in the early 70’s and never stopped playing it. It’s great and it’s fun. I’m now the same age as the lovely lady on the piano.
Yeah odd init but captures something me too ????
Look how lovely her posture is. God bless Hilda Woodward. 😢
Ahh the 70s...would give pretty much anything to be back in that decade
Give us a life back
I spent my formative years in the 70s, a childhood spent in a less complicated era. Aged 53 next week!
@@angelacooper2661I hear that. Was 53 in Dec 🥺
2024 who is still listening?
Me, just now😂
20th April. Here I am.
@@rw8733 One week later 😂
Have you heard the synethizer version...👌🫶💛🩷
@@66debmac I don't believe I have, no 🤔
Bought this record in London 73 Where i was an aupair girl. Wish i had lever left . Best time in my life! Maria in sweden.
Priceless! I adore the juxtaposition all the super 70s glitter of self, especially those amazing rainbow pants and then the older woman filled with such elegance of a different kind, happily banging away on that piano with them!
Hilda Woodward that's his mother 👍🇬🇧
Nach über 40 Jahren wieder gefunden. Das war richtig geile Musik. Und ich zudem Zeitpunkt gerade mal 8 Jahre. Und bei dem Song bin ich es wieder.
Some many people don't even know this song - it was the 42 best selling single of the whole of the 1970s in the UK. And I still love it.
So do i!
Yet in the U.S., it didn't even make any of the charts there (Billboard, Cash Box, Record World). One of the songs at #1 in Billboard while this was atop the UK charts was "Ben" by Michael Jackson; "MOD's" last week at #1 in Britain was the first of four weeks for the top in the States for Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now." (The middle two weeks, future UK #1 "My Ding-A-Ling" by Chuck Berry topped the US charts.)
If this is of consolation, one of the US #1's in 1972 - "The Candy Man" by Sammy Davis Jr. - never made the UK charts.
@@wmbrown6 I always said you Yanks had no taste!!!
@@AspireDecorating - Funny, a lot of what topped the UK charts in the '70's could be inferred of Etons' taste - or, some would say, lack thereof. ("D-I-V-O-R-C-E" by Billy Connolly, anyone?)
I remember this song playing and all the banger racer driving around the track best feeling ever
Mouldy old dough what a classic song in millions of ways.
I remember as a young lad seeing this on Top of the Pops when it was number one. The lady playing the piano was the oldest person I think that I had ever seen in my life. Fast forward a few years and I'm thinking "actually - she's a bit of a looker!"
🤣🤣
Brilliant comment. 👏
Good thing the old lady is there, really brings the band together.
This song was #1 in the UK music charts in the early 70s... Love it.
It took around 8 months in the UK charts to reach no 1 !! - but stayed 2 weeks I believe !!
"Mum, do you wanna be in my pop group?"
Absolutely love this! 😊💖
I love this so much. My Mom was in my act too.....I couldn't do it anymore when she died. I love the fact Rob Woodward's Mother was in this band.
God bless Hilda. 🙌
To this day still played just before the teams come out at Boundary Park. Oldham Athletic .Every time I hear it, takes be back to being a12 year old kid at the match.
I was born in Oldham and had it played at my 50th birthday party when I was cutting the cake, because it was always played at Boundary Park.
Going to Latics tomorrow. Bank holiday Monday 26 8 24 .
Used to be played at HT at Edgar Street, Hereford Utd in the 70s. Whether it's still played these days any more, I really don't know.
Wie schreef dat toch ooit ook weer?: "Geluk: iets dat pas zichtbaar wordt als het voorbij is...." :-).What a happy time those early seventies were.... En kicke' hè; die heerlijke mode uit die tijd.... Niet te geloven dat we er toen allemaal zo bij liepen, woeha... :-).
50 years ago this week! Superb!
such memories listening to this track, my nan would play this on an old record player in her kitchen and as did her washing in the twintub! her head would bob side to side as she listened to this, her favourite song.
That was when i was 8 years old, im now 52!... i'd do anything to see that image, in that kitchen just one more time.. i miss you nan x
And was the only number 1 in the UK to feature a mother and son! Had shoes like that (not Hilda's)! Back in the day...halcyon memories!!!
Oh wow this takes me back to the days of stock cars and Banger racing. My father was a stock car racer back in the day....
How cool is that, having your mum in the band!
Dam song almost brought me to tears when I heard it yesterday, because I just knew I would never hear it again, let alone see the videos......great job you guys, a rare treat for as a Brit born to Jamaican parents...lol.
Spedeworth, Wimbledon Raceway. The entry music to each banger race.
Now we'll never get to go there again, never hear the unsilenced engines. Never trot off to the cafeteria on a winters evening to get a scalding tea or coffee to wrap our hands around.
Best entertainment I've ever experienced in sport.
Cambridge's, Oxfords, Westies, Zephyrs, Crestas, Rovers and Humbers.
R.i.P. Wimbledon Stadium 😢
Love those emotional lyrics, makes me cry...…………………..with laughter every time I hear it.
It's legendary isn't it? 😂
Play it again !
I have always loved this record , when you listen to it you feel transported back to that time.
Just hearing this band for the first time can't stop bopping from it awesome instrumental 😊
Через полвека услышал это шикарное произведение!!! Меня эта вещи прямо- таки возрадовало!!! Раньше никогда не слышал, обидно, понимаешь ли!?
2020 and still enjoying this!
YES. 👍🎹. I remember this one years ago
2021 and just discovered this ! Love it
2022 signing in! Hi Bob!
Can imagine this playing in some 80s pub while a bar-room brawl of incredible violence kicks off.
Complete with a few windows being put through.
Marvellous stuff. 🍻
Was in the 70s, pal,, was a kid back then,,,
Yep! It's got that chucking-out time slapstick violence vibe!
And pool sticks being broken on some poor blokes back
Your comment had me in stitches
I'd bet the bank you're from the heart of Ireland.
Number 1 when my wife was born. She still loves it to this day but has never seen the actual group, which is nothing like she imagined! Glam rock n roll with a cowboy/western tune and a little, older lady playing the piano??!! Now that’s unique!
brings back happy memories of the early 70s
Music through the ages..Music for every one. 1970s was an amazing era for the music scene. Not maby words Lyricly..but how many bands have their Mum playing on the piano alongside their son..Pure GOLD! 70s Rock n Rule the WORLD!
this was playing when i met my future wife , it became our song , RIP Beryl
That brought back a few happy memories. Thanks for posting it.
Love this still listen to this
It's worth watching just to see the beautiful pigeon. Great group and lovely pigeon.
I loved lieutenant pigeon when i was young.they were actually brilliant musicians.the lady was so clever.lovely group.
I loved them too. I was 13 and getting into rock music like The Faces, but couldn't resist a good group that had a piano player.
Remember this well. 👏👏
I remember when this first came out & thinking what a load of old tosh....now however it's a walk down memory lane...brill
I have absolutely no idea why, but today - travelling about - doing my work - I suddenly found myself thinking of this band and this song. No prompts, no stimulus. Weird. Great wacky little song. Nothing like this would ever cut through nowadays. The 1970's were great for eccentric bands and songs..
We just played it as exit song from our dad's funeral 💔 he would have loved it 🎉
My earliest memory of watching TOTPS back in '72. Just moved house and swapped infants school. Take away glam rock and this track typifies the early 1970's and along with Nilssons " With out you" my favourite tracks of this period. Like many have already commented the lead singer's Mother the eldest female to ever reach number one.
I would have been just two then and in the pushchair. Not old enough to understand or remember that period. Have to rely on second hand observations of other people!
avsoultely WONDERFULL ! ! ! ! ! ! I'm playing this piece in the church on a great pipe-organ, cause there will be a lot of youngsters there...
Happy memories of my youth. No worries just having a great time.
I've always loved this song! Since first hearing it back in the day and being given it on 7" vinyl, which I still have but only listen to it on here or mp3 these days... But still a favourite ❤️♥️❤️
Great bit of music !! Reminds me when my kids were small and I used to dance around the floor with them 🥰🥰🥰
Nobody mentions the banger racing and the sheer utter mayhem that goes with this delightful track. . . .whenever this plays the good times roll
ABSOLUTELY! YOU ARE SPOT ON. AS A BOY, I USED TO THINK THAT THIS HIT WAS MADE FOR BANGER RACING, AS THE FLOODLIGHTS DIMMED WHILST MARSHALL TED WEAVER WOULD IN THE BACK OF THE CONTROL CAR START THE PROCESSION FOR ANOTHER DEMOLISHION DERBY AT ALDERSHOT ! ;)
Ah!! 1972 brings back great memories
Great catchy song. No.1 in 1972
My grandad showed me this song a year ago, it just reminds me of a carnival we always listen to it and dance along
Utterly wonderful 👍😃
This song came on (With March of the Mods) before every race at Arlington for the Banger Races this Bank Holiday Monday. Literally woke up humming it.
Yes!! I was just about to comment the same thing but I’m a few years too late 😂
Seriously
Love this track
It reminds me of banger racing
I've heard it sooo many times
And know all the words ❤
Yeah me too
And great name I
This is golden...
Schöne Erinnerungen an meine Jugend!
I’m 50 in September and l remember this song fondly. My parents played it a lot. I agree with a few comments here it really is a beautiful piece of music and a classic.
I was actually able to get one up on my husband. Who is six years older then myself. Never heard of the song, and was surprised l knew of it...
Like ya style
Love it sooo much
I know all the words.
Play it again !
You must be fifteen months my junior, as I turned 50 in June 2020 (53 next week!)
I was 9yrs old when this came out it evokes such good childhood memories, funny how all you Senses come flooding back,Magical
Why does it make me cry? It's so back too the ground I think
This is such a great track of much happier innocent days
Agreed! The days before the world and life became all serious! 👏
I would have been just two and in the pushchair at the time of this footage. Not old enough to understand or remember that period - had to rely on second hand observations of other people!
Summer of ‘72 an older brother bought this 45 (I was 9 at the time; 59 now) … loved it ever since
I am still listing to these old records
2023 and I’m still enjoying this.
Bangers signature tune, takes me straight back to Arlington raceway and the Brighton Bashers team era, Great times.
Banger racing, demolition derby. Totp when I was a wee lad. Very emotional for me
Gerry Anderson and the Spotniks!!! Purrrrrfect!!!
I love my country's eccentricity LOL, still good in 2021
All logic would suggest stuff like this would get lost/forgotten with the passage of time, yet the opposite has happened and it seems even more special.
vordman they play this at banger racing tracks all over England before a race starts keeping it alive
@@paulbackhard6315 Yes the short ovals defo kept this alive, every time I hear it I can smell exhaust fumes mixed with burning rubber, funny thing is makes me want a pint of warm flat beer & a hot-dog too.
@@paulbackhard6315 shame banger racing is dying off tho.
I thought that woman was amazing on the piano she seemed old back then, but she was only 58 but she just gave the group that extra something that made the group memorable.
hearing this song again brings back good memories of me being 15 years old
Classic ! 70's style rules ! Beautiful !
Brilliant,,many memories
. . . and if it also was beauty memories you here get likes from me.
loved this his old mother on the piano happy happy days,, cracking tune
Tivvy Oliver Gran was the real deal could knock out a tune, magic stuff,,
A part of my childhood! Rob - good musician... Hilda - you fucking ROCK!
I don't think I heard this in well over 50 years , its still cool
Loved I remembered watching it on top of the pops....seemed like yesterday and I always remembered it even when I left England to this day.
What I love is how utterly clapped-out the two pianos sound. Only better piano solo (or duet) is on 'Something in the Air'!
As far as I'm aware, this superb tune has never been used in a major film or TV series? I'd love to see it back in the charts again and outselling modern-day utter dross.
It was used in Lotto New Zealand TV advertising in the 90s, without lyrics.
It became really popular there.
I hope it pleases you to learn?..
EVERY oval racing circuit in England that I know of, which holds official banger racing events?
Have played this track in the stadiums on the warmup lap since the 70s.
An
EXCELLENT tradition.
Many Engish YT banger race vids catch this playing in the background if their footage shows the start of the race ?
An excellent tradition that has been going on since the 70s and is still going on to this day !!!
Feel free to
Play it again with a big smile on your face ☺
love this. end of my depression
I love that no one was even blinking an eye at them playing with mum. How cool are they and how cool was mum?
Aside the sheer brilliance of the hit, there is a truly wonderful YT Fletcher Woodward reunion clip dated 2022. About half an hour of fascinating conversation including with the ginger man who growled out the song title. A warm trip down memory lane.
A blast from the past if ever there was
I have not heard this since it finished airing, or it’s run on top of the pops, but always played it note for note in my head never knew the name of it....my brother and put I heads together and we’re determined to fined....was a dam long shot, but here we are.
I remember when this was released. Brilliant.
Verbreitet definitiv gute Laune
I still have this single record in my collection 😊
Quirky, off the wall, a bit weird, loved every minute of it.
Not laughing bro, I’ve loved this song since I was a kid!
what memories !!!!!
Just brilliant and so unusual, with Hilda tickling the ivories R.I P
Play it again !
It might have been 50 years since I last heard this song.
As a kid in the 70s, when 1st heard this, liked, born May 23rd 1968, from northern Ireland UK, 🇬🇧♥️🇬🇧
