Finally, here is the first episode featuring the Fuji XE-4. This time I am shooting the Fuji with the Voigtländer 35/1.2 in Veracruz/Mexico at night. The city is located on the gulf cost and is not a place western tourist usually visit. While shooting the X-E4 I've noticed a weird issue the camera has. A friend also had similar problems with his camera so I guess it's not a bug and rather a feature of the camera. 😂
See you soon in the next one!

It's a feature, not a bug 🙃
I have an explanation:
The screen flips if you open it all the way (when you put it in vlog mode).
It knows that he has to flip if 2 conditions are met: 1) it is open; 2) the infrared sensor is covered (normally if you put the screen in vlog mode, the sensor is covered).
In your case the screen is open and the infrared sensor, although not covered, behaves as if it is covered because your jacket reflects the light it emits.
Glad you’re back Robin. Sundays aren’t the same without one of your videos.
Thank you, I appreciate that. 🙌
You've got Balls man. Keep it up!
I’m really happy to see that you’ve been able to return to Mexico as you suggested it was more than a hope but less than a solid plan a few months ago. How’s your Spanish coming along? Every video you publish I’m blown away that people barely react to your presence, some stealthy ninja skills you’ve developed over the years. I’m looking forward to news of a book in due course.
Thanks Stuart. Unfortunately, I am too busy to study Spanish. Filming ans taking photos keeps me occupied enough already. 😂
Not sure when something physical will be released but I can't wait for that day. 👍
Again a great video! The cam/lens combo produces some very nice results!
This lens seems to be gorgeous! Hope you will also test out the Voigtländer 23/1.2 which will come out soon. Pretty much interested in it.
Thank you! I am not sure if I will test that lens because I would probably never really use it. I would have loved to see a compact 18mm. 👍
I think so: The flip screen has a built-in magnet. On the camera body at the bottom left is a hall sensor that determines that the screen is lowered. If you stick some kind of magnetic film on the hall sensor, the camera will think that the screen is always down and will not turn it over.
It’s the eye sensor. I have the same issue. The eye sensor is way too sensitive. I ordered some led dimming tape from amazing and when the tape is over the sensor it works as it should. I’m gonna make a video about it on my photography channel. Yeah, it’s hard to believe fuji didn’t catch that.
Sarifoto (is the other channel)
I think they did but long after starting production. changing the sensitivity is manageable in a firmware update i think but will they do it is another question.
Very interested in this. It's the main issue I have with my X-E4.
@@showdaKOs yeah, I’m honestly quite surprised they haven’t already fixed it in a firmware issue. It’s a huge issue as I think a lot of people who buy this camera are interested in shooting from the hip or with the screen at a ninety degree angle.
@@philt_uk I’ll see if I can find the link to the LED diner tape on Amazon and I’ll see if RUclips will allow me to post it here in this comment. It was only about $8. The only annoying thing is that if I want to record a self talking part, I need to take the dimmer strip off of the sensor. I’ll try and post that link later today.
@@afinacionymovimiento that’d be great. Thanks. 👍🏻
This issue is the only thing that annoys me about the Xe4. Hopefully they fix it
Interesting things about that camera. Glad to see you made it out of Russia safely. Keep up the great work!
Did you update the firmware on your jacket?
Unfortunately, it's too old and there won't be a new firmware coming. 😆
@@therealsirrobin Typical planned obsolescence
How are you focussing at 1.2 walking towards people and getting them sharp? Very impressive
Mine does it, I’ve given up and don’t use the screen at all now. Made a commitment this year to shoot manual lens only and through the viewfinder, screen off.
it's the eye sensor, While in my car I was wearing a jacket with a fluorescent patch and it affected the screen on my xt2 , kept going black. I thought I bought a defective camera until I figured out my jacket was affecting the sensor
Try to turn of the eye sensor, by pressing the view option button until it's locked to LCD, or EVF rather than relying on the eye sensor. Maybe it could help with the flipping screen. My X-T2 had a very annoying sensitive eye sensor. I have to have the camera maybe 15-20cm away from my body to get the LCD to light up.
Cool to see you shoot Veracruz. I was there for a month in February. The beach front is very nice. There is an Oxxo on the beach which is pretty iconic way up the shore line by Boca del Rio. There are some interesting sand dunes nearby too.
I know exactly which OXXO you are talking about. Unfortunately, it was extremely windy most of the days I was there.
I always had that same issue. I would just hold the camera a little farther from my body and it would rotate back.
I found a solution in a forum somewhere that fixed the problem for me: Try to tape over about the upper half of the eye sensor. With a little trial and error I could get the camera to recognize my eye when I look through the viewfinder, but it does not rotate while shooting from the hip.
I’m thinking that the image flipping thing has to do with a sensor that uses magnets and it’s reacting to/pulling on (with magnets) the zipper? I’m just guessing though.
The screen is able to flip all the way to the front, for selfies right? That is what that flip is supposed to be for though. And the image rotation thing that you turned off, I think that is for going from landscape to portrait orientation. I think.
10:10 ... to hear what the problem is. image rotation in the LCD screen.
How are you able to recover so much detail from the underexposed images?
I’m wondering the same thing!?!
The raw files have plenty of information in the shadows to recover!
I experienced the same thing… it must be related to the selfie mode (cause non of my other fuji camera’s do this). When moving the screen up towards selfie mode it flips upside down too soon. Weird that your jacket plays a mysterious role in this “selfie mode gate” too 😅
Very annoying though 🤨
Thanks, Just bought the X-E4
It's a nice camera despite this strange issue.
Hi Robin, good to see you again, got a bit worried hehehe.
Woow strange things happening..
It's not Voodoo magic but Fuji magic 😂
Loved the video !!
Haha, thanks! Was just too busy filming here in Mexico. 😆
Satans jacket - Call a priest
😈
Could the Camera display problem been introduced by your jacket by means of a static discharge, triggering this behaviour? If you use a jacket with a metal zipper is the problem still there?
Don't think so because it occasionally also happens with black t shirts.
Wow interesting!! :0 extremely strange indeed
I have sometimes the same problem with this camera. I did not know that the jacket is the problem.
I also have the issue with other shirts but only occasionally.
The same thing is happening with my xe4 but it doesn't matter what I wear, it happens every time the screen is up and the ovf detection sensor get close to something. I think the reason for that is that the screen itself doesn't have a rotation sensor so the only way for the camera to know when the screen is in "vlogger position" is for the eye detection sensor to get covered. If I'm right it means that fuji cannot fix the issue otherwise the image won't flip when the screen is facing forward. Hopefully the explanation of my theory was clear sorry if it's not.
PS: Great pictures as always.
Thank you Vincent! It also happens without that jacket but only sometimes. Fuji messed this up big time.
Same issue when shooting in waist level style with my x-e4…
Grounding issue? Some small leakage static charge to the table?? Weird and pretty funny
10:20 TL;DR when he flips up the screen image rotates. that's the meat of the video
from now on, only bright colored jackets! what a wonderful problem :)
I have an issue like this with my eos r6.
When I where one of my bag with plastic reflector strap, the evf turn on. When I don’t have the bag, it’s working fine.
Looks like this kind of problem is coming from reflector part
How do you like the Voigt 35mm f1.2 X? Worth it? I'm thinking of getting this manual lens for my X-Pro3, even though it's a bit pricey.
lol what a strange bug. It surely has something to do with the sensor reflecting strangely on your jacket and then thinking the screen is flipped up. That is the only explanation. :D
Probably but it sucks big time. And reading the comments here, I am not the only one with that issue.
I can reproduce it. I have only one ripped dark blue pullover wich does not trigger the sensor at all. No problems on short distances between Sensor and pollover. But most of the other shirts (light or dark shirts) trigger the sensor in different distances. It´s bad designed by fuji and would be so easy to disable by software.
No issue with my XE4! work perfect! :-)
I am pretty sure that all XE4s have that issue but you simply haven't encountered it yet. Fingers crossed I am wrong! 😆
@@therealsirrobin 🤣🤣🤣 yes maybe…wait and see.
@@therealsirrobin :-) Hi, you right finally same issue!! 🙂
i have the same issue with my xe 4 and its soo strange
Great!
Isn’t focus peaking available for any lens no matter what? It doesn’t matter if you’re using an adaptor or not, I thought.
On my adapted M mount lenses it's not available.
@@therealsirrobin oh really? That’s very interesting! I’ve misunderstood how that feature works.
what a lens!😀
would you recomend, should i get voigtlander 35mm 1.2 or go to xf 33 1.4 insted for the image quality(characteristics for film look in raw images)
because im still confuse to buy this combo
nikon z5 + voigtlander nokton 50 1.5 or xs10 + xf 33mm or voigtlander 35mm 1.2
If you want a manual expirience - get manual lens.
Best AF in photo and video, and clean wide open image - XF33mm. Okay AF and a bit of character wide open - XF35mm f/1.4. More like XF33mm, with weather-resistant and fast AF, but darker - XF35mm f/2. Voigtlander wide open gives a lot of character, glowing-like effect and softness, but with resolution. It also produces good sun stars even at f/2 and can sometimes create interesting rainbow flares at f/1.2.
Does the Voigtländer 35 have any room to attach a rangefinder focus knob?
Yes, people mounted a 7artisans knob to it already, look it up on google
Do you have a latest firmware?
The video was filmed just before release but it didn't seem to have fixed the issue.
looks like you have the summer version 😂
😆
YOUR JACKET IS HAUNTED!!!
I think, your magic jacket made Will Smith slap Chris Rock. What else will it do?
It's the Chuck Norris of all jackets. 😎
The zipper line is very prominent… I wonder if the camera believes that is a horizon line and is trying to correct the orientation
After filming the video I had the same issue with a normal black t-shirt but it happened only once in a while.
Nope don't have that problem
I mean …apart from that it’s a good deal for the price, right ?
Yes and no but more on that in a future video.
Easy solution, throw your jacket away.
I'd much rather throw the camera away. 😅
Magnetic zipper?
Nice! :)
You have to switch off eye sensor, and I doubt Fujifilm will do anything to update user error.
Sorry Iglo Fujifanboy. But the engineer who implemented this „feature“ did a bad job. Or he was drunk or both. That´s it and everyone should be allowed to tell this fact.
It happens to other brands also
I've never encountered a problem like this before.
eye sensor! your tee-shirt was clear, so enought light like nothing on the ovf! your jacket too dark, sensor thought that your eye is on the evf. Shut off the eye detection
Could be! Whatever the cause is, Fuji needs to address the issue asap.
...by over exposing you lose the vibe of the night and the images are not natural😉
Well, there is nothing overexposed.
