Really wonderful cover of Laura Nyro's song made famous by The Fifth Dimension. And so touched that Morrissey chose to release it on the day marking the 22nd anniversary of Laura's passing.

I love Nyro's partnership with the 5th Dimension, she was such an integral part of what their sound would be famous for. I never thought Morrissey would pull off this cover so well. I listen to it non stop sometimes.
Given Morrissey's history of slandering other musicians. It is nice to see him show a more positive outlook. I think the only other musician he expressed favor to was Siouxie, and I may not even be remembering that correctly.
This reminds me of when the smiths appeared on totp with 'William it was really nothing' and morrissey had the words 'Marry me' written on his chest.

Even though there is a forlorn longing at the heart of the lyrics, the song is still very upbeat and optimistic. Morrissey, as usual, sings like an angel. All of the songs so far released from California Son emanate a strange combination of past and present, creating a nostalgia for a time that never existed. California Son will be a unique gift to music, a totem of what music was and still can be when the right artist taps the well of inspiration.
