The flooding completely destroyed huge sections of the road, and made this entire area completely inaccessible to even the most capable 4x4 vehicles. This is Four Mile Creek, along Four Mile Road, maybe 5 miles west of Boulder Colorado. 9/17/2013
I don't have any official numbers, but just being familiar with the creek, I would guesstimate that there is about 15 times more water flowing in the creek than is typical for this time of year, and probably 5 times more than peak flow for any average year.
[if someone does have the actual numbers, please message me with them and I will update]
What you are seeing in this video is the reconstruction of the creek bed, to restore it to the pre-flood path. These excavator operators started miles down the road, and have restored the path of the creek up to this point. It was a pleasure to watch them perform this restoration work; diverting the water away from the road, and effectively beginning the reconstruction process.
The operator who is working from within the creek is especially skilled and it is mesmerizing to watch him work.
Looks like fun! When I was a kid I really liked digging in streams of water trying to make them change direction, or build small dams
Thought I was the only one
it look like they just dont have any idea what they're doing or what to do more than just keep digging at the same spot
These folks are clueless as to what the hell they are doing. That operator is just throwing that bucket around like crazy. He has no idea what he's doing.
When's the last time you tried to redirect a river oh mighty keyboard warrior? They at least accomplished more than some jerk on the internet.
@Mikey Temple
You're comparing trying to help with flooding to an average day on a job site? You seem like the type that would refuse to help in an emergency unless you were getting paid some exorbident wage. You're right about one thing though, I'm not an operator. I'm the tech that fixes the equipment after the operators are done beating the crap out of it. Do me a favour and pick up a grease gun next time you do your pre-trip inspection and actually use it.
Exactly
Welcome to the world of building, by accident or design the outcomes the same, lucky
The little one at 7:40... "Look dad, i'm helping too! Look what I brought! Look!", so adorable.
D
😆 10:58 are there just no more rocks for it to pick up?
Worthless as a screen door on a submarine!
3 decent machines and only 1 has a productive plan that will actually work.. 😂
I lived in Four Mile Canyon when I went to college in Boulder. After a heavy rain, I would watch Boulder Creek and Four Mile Creek rise. But it was nowhere near this much!! This backhoe operator is a damn fine worker, IMHO. It looks like he is really getting the job done.

My cousin Wesley Quinlan was killed when his car was swept off the road & turned upside down in the creek. His girlfriend was killed after escaping the car only to drown in the raging water. Wesley got out of the car to help her & they were both found the next day.
This is my Facebook posting...
Wesley Quinlan 2013
My heart is full of pride & sadness with the loss of our cousin taken so young. Wesley showed his true mettle and proved he was the best of this strong family when tragedy struck.
It is hard to understand this loss but I am comforted knowing there is another hero in heaven looking over us!
My thoughts and prayers are with Ron, Glenda, Wayne, Sue & the entire Quinlan family.
10:50 WOOOWW....that really helped there buddy
Ive never used an escavater before...but for what im gathering that this guy can't use it for $H!T.
These are the unsung heroes when disasters occur, truly Americans doing what Americans do best.
Okay, I understand what he is up to. He isn't relieving flooding where he is digging, building a dam and all, but he is digging deeper into the creek to increase the flow to relieve flooding up stream. My older brother and I used to do this same thing back when we were boys playing with our Tonka Toys. We would then go to hang off the sides of our bunk bed pretending to be lineman working on the electrical lines.
Is it just me or could the loader operator move more with a tea spoon.
This is painful to watch.......
unbelievable......................great Job.
This has been on my front page of suggested videos for WEEKS now and i've finally thought "If i watch this will it finally f**k off my youtube page......
............to be honest i'm very glad i watched it! That guy sure knew what he was doing!
Paid by the hour....lol. Loader brings a quarter yard in a 3 yard bucket.
lmao
City workers 🤣🤣🤣
1/4 yard? That looked like 8-10 shovel fulls.
why am I here? How did I get here? And why have I been watching this for 5 minutes?
Anyone can operate an excavator, just like playing video games, the difference is training and this fellow certainly this was his first time dealing with a blocked stream. The bucked clears the canal perpendicular to the water flow pulling the rocks and sand towards the excavator, advancing one bucket width each time.
uhh... could tell it wasn't his machine, the way he was operating it.
sure can't figure out what the bucket loader is doing? besides nothing! lol
the loader operator is certainly getting massive bucket loads to help
There would be a reason behind that one... such as clearing debris from further up the road.
Yeah I could carry more on a shovel... And quicker
i don't care how he work....at least he taking care the floods.
The loader coming down and dumping a few rocks had me wondering what was the point? I'd say the contractor boss has seen this vid and wondered same. Lovely work by excavator driver.
it's so the water doesn't erode the highway, notice how he's dumping right on the edge of the pavement? it's so water doesn't erode the soil and get underneath and rip up the road

Neat video, had to watch it to the end!
i wish i was one of the operators.
i thought most cats disliked water.
Fetch_my_laptop good 1
😂
lol good point.
GREAT video, what they do is a craft, true experts....
Is this à Tod Hofman gold rush operation
That's too funny I thought the same
That is one powerful Cat.
This is a job that should have been done before the flooding but then again if they did that how would they scam the state for the overtime
I vote for digger simulator 2014!
Now, I ask ye, folks, have ye ever seen it to fail, that everbody knows how to do a job better'n the fellers actually doin th job? If all of these arm chair operators were there, they'd probably end up doin the same thing that these fellers are...or maybe not as good. That loader operator can't be judged, because he's mostly up the road, probably doin a job that the camera don't show. I've run equipment for 30 years and been criticized by better operators the whole time, that is, till I invited them to show me how. Then them loud mouths had better places to be. I reckon most of these criticizing operators on you tube are the same.

Agreed. Arm chair critiques in everything are so annoying.

Your sittin on the blockage brother.....not dissin you.....doin a hell of a job there.....
About 80% of your property taxes go to Schools, teachers pensions etc - this is funded by generally 1% of it & makes life easier for moving about. Food for thougt
SUCH A WASTE; at least let us sluice a bit... or maybe set up a trommel lol
I like how the loaders dump a wheelbarrow and get more lmfao
He might be hi on drugs. That operator is practically doing nothing.
I bet alot of GOLD was unearthed that day ... bonanza !!
Dream job right there. I would love to do that kind of work
meanwhile I have to cover dirt piles with plastic, straw all exposed dirt use catch basin socks and silt fence from prop corner to prop corner so no sediment gets into the local streams.
What is the loader doing? not much wasting fuel seems like
The word "rough" comes to mind
the wheel loader is inefficient with that load
They will be back again in 5 years when even more rain falls. Good job security.
LMFAO 😂
Unreal. The more I watch, the more ridiculous this is. They're like kids playing in a sandbox.
Wow what a terrible operator...
Did they ever finished moving dirt and rocks???🤔
I love watching mother nature remind people this is her land, we are simply guests here.

Unbelievable how good such an excavator can drive though rivers. With a regular car it would have been dodgy to drive through the water on the road already, and that excavator just drives upstream though the middle of the current :-)
the fact that the excavator weight the same as about 15 cars helps a lot
***** , some people just dont understand, lol.

@@DangerousDan666 and the motor is out of the water
Notice, when the fit hits the shan, no Volvos, Deeres, Komatsus, Kobelcos, or Hitachis getting deployed - despite being cheaper to throw away. An operator is going into the sh!t wants something dependable to take there ;D
I remember when this happened it took all that flood water about 3 days to work its way down into Arizona in morenci in particular I remember it raise a whole lot of hell in San Francisco River
Was this some where in Colorado?
You set the excavator in the dam road and pull the bedrock to you don't get in the river in case the river pick up!
Thank you for ALL of these videos. We live half a mile above Poorman turn off. We could not find any news of Fourmile until we came across your videos on RUclips. Thank you, Thank you
What no Army Corp of Engineer or EPA permits, you guys are is so much trouble. What do you mean there's a town downstream in danger?, So what you still need permission from your Big Brother.

The operator is hopeless.. bloody frustrating to watch
What a cool video, that guy has played in the river more than once. B-) I like how he worked the angle gradually instead of building a fast hard wall that would get blown out in about five minutes. Never get greedy.... Nice job keeping the video solid, I know how hard that can be on a long video.
tough enviorment to work in.. But damn, the banging of that bucket cylinder :P
hard to believe i used 14 minutes to watch this , and the most amazing part is that i have enjoyed watching !
I'll bet there's some gold in that....
savagenomore ,bull shit
austin obviously dont know Jack about colorado. Tons of gold came out of that area and all the way down to denver . Mining continues today. So yes. You do bull. Shit.
OMG people are you really that bored and self centered stop judging so much and trying to belittle everyone grow up, yes he might be rough and rammy but who cares do you own the machine. PLUS everyone talking about the loader and his half bucket full, fuck your not even there you have no idea what's going on there, might be just back up the road a bit cleaning material off the road. So fuck off with the negative shit and get a life. Positive thought end up with positive outcomes you know.
Not how I would have done it. But someone needs to learn some time. Why not here. The loader was a waste of resources carting so little rock. One man could've done this in 1 hour if he was experienced. I've seen it happen.
12:33 No! No! No! DON'T do it! Don't destroy a stable bank! You do!
As a hydraulic civil engineer i don't understand one second of the whole procedure. This is no reconstruction of the creek bed but working against natur. I'm so sorry. It is so sad to watch.
Everyone is bagging on the loader? Tell me everyone who has not one hour in any of this equipment where is the spoil pile that the loader operator is pulling from? He is in a damn canyon! When was the last time you saw a huge spoil pile of extra fill material just waiting around in a tight narrow canyon for unexpected flooding. He is likely only able to get a little material that has built up over the years from erosion at the base of the canyon walls. He is more than likely gathering whatever he can from the shoulder that isnt submerged and along with that scraping up the debris that has built up on the asphalt as the water deposits debris as it passes over. He isnt trying to shuttle material he obviously doesn't have access to! The guy in the hoe knows what hes doing and if anyone with any amount of ACTUAL EXPERIENCE as an operator can see what he is doing.
My brother in law let me dig a huge hole with one just like that for a fishing pond
After only 30 secs on what hand does bucket an the arm , the two sticks in front were u sit control each track seprately push both up for forwards an both back for reverse unless u spin the cab then its confuseing lol, then he let me loose with it ! so much fun and easy aswel ! i could of happily dug to china lol
Every one so up in the air about the loader... He's cleaning off the road... It's not possible to get a full bucket doing what he's doing.... I can testify..... If you've done any excavation at all in your life it's pretty easy to see what there all tryna do
as long as he build island in center water will go on street
I did this once except the water was up to the bottom of the cab and a much wider creek. Spinning around with the water rushing right under me made me so "car sick" that after six hours I was to dizzy to operate it anymore. This type of job where you can just dig is fun, working around pipes and fiber optic lines not so much. I have no idea what their plan is here, the loader operator is just burning diesel pretending to be doing something, same with the track hoe in the road and the one in the creek is running about 50% efficiency and he better quit twisting around on his tracks in those rocks without lifting himself up before he throws a track. Can you say milking a government job.
Which country is this😳😲😳
nice vid but how did I get from political assassinations to here?
what was the problem was this on the news it looks like a very big storm hit this place and killed the road what they need to do is blow up the the side of that mountain and make the river bigger get thoese ppl help so this shit doesnot happen anymore
Respect for the guy in the water, I mean
I can't so don't listen to those word,s from other people just Rock 😂 your thing greetings from The Netherlands ✌ Bro
Take care and stay Healthy
Man, what I would give to pan some of that gravel out. Gotta be some nice pickers in that deeper stuff they dug out and dumped out on top. Hmmm, I'd bring home a bucket of two of good concentrates to pan out in the comfort of the garage. You local guys should spend a day panning that out. That is if there isn't a claim on the land...
I don't understand they have a payloader there. Why is he not sending the gravel out onto the street so he doesn't have to do everything twice. It just seems like he's working twice as hard as he needs to or harder. Did anyone see any gold Emeril's sapphires. Colorado's mountains are full of them
What I’ve come to realize on these RUclips recommendations (mainly plumbing or big machinery being used) is that 70 percent of the people commenting are professionals apparently.
darkslayer1000000 Apparently you know nothing about writing comments. (Just joking around.) I completely agree with you. But It’s more like 90-95 percent of people are pros commenting about how it’s being done wrong.
These 2 back how operators arent the sharpest tools in the shed. The one in the river needs to get out before the other one seals him in. And instead of them digging all around the issue...why not take the dirt behind the one in the river and move it closer to the roadway redirecting the water away from the road
Just curious. putting a tractor like that which has trax on it like this one does, the water wont rust out those trax right, and you are right, that operator is very good working that machine
Not a very good operator, now stuck in the middle. Didnt really think it through, just hacking away..
5:18 WTF? Dude goes away from like 5 minutes and comes back with the equivalent of what I could hand shovel in about 30 seconds.
The excavator driver is somewhat skilled...but why isn't the diversion path wider? He made it small and deeper...instead of wider and deeper.
Actually, they could have accomplished more had they just focused on using the guard rail for support and building a barrier with the rubble and dirt, digging the area out deeper for the water to flow in and using that for the barrier itself.
Watching May 2019
KInd of an odd scene, seems like the guy up river is working rather diligently while the other 2 machines are doing almost nothing. just seems odd to me.
County job, street crews, one work the other 5 watch
yeah the guy in the crane in the middle of the creek knows what to do. the other 2 guys seem to only want a temporary fix.
only way to fix this is to completely reroute the water to the far side of the island.
Would be nice if you knew how to hold the camera still!
tracks on the shovel will be nice and clean!
What a cool creature. They're making a dam
Was someone loading that “loader” with a shovel?
He is so gentle when he empties the bucket. I bet he is a great lover.
Praticamente uma maquina trabalhando e duas enrolando!
I EVER SAW THAT BUCKET EMPTY ON THAT FRONT END LOADER... HE WOULD BE FIRED!!!!! FIRED!!!! LOL
Dam you sound like a so cal operator or foreman. Lol. GOGOGOGO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
lol...
Time wasters . Why don't deposit all the stones close to the street rail? To stop the water going all over street and redirect all to right path
he should put the stones from the fare side an put them behind the barrier to safeguard the road, not make an island in the middle!!
I run a hoe 10hrs a day and here I find myself watching the very exact thing I do!
Guy on the loader is no help at all ha ha. Coming with near empty bucket....
First thing I noticed. I could about carry as much material as he was with a hand shovel lol.
Good job. Money well spent!
so I will bite what is the hornlike shape in the dirt behind the bucket from 13:01 to 13:04 anyone hum
Meanwhile the town is flooding and the loader hand will safe the day after the flooding stops,
Should of side dug it would of been best method and start from upriver so water helps cut
some not smooth movement detected but otherwise great operator, didnt do anything unnecessary
Horrible operating skills. No thought into his madness..👎👎
They need to be careful or $500.678 dollar backhoe is gone 😳
