I always wondered what Mike Maves was talking about in his video...now after watching this, it finally makes sense. You do have the advantage of NOT having the ultra-confused cameraman in your videos! You are the first youtuber to claim to have the secret and then actually prove it and show it in a non-confusing way.
    For that, I thank you.

I am a 6 handicap who had developed such a bad hook I had to aim 20 to 30 yds left of the green. 2 weeks ago on a 3 day golf trip I actually prayed for rain so I wouldn't have to play the last day. I decided to go on line a research and change my swing. Believe it or not I never read anything about hogan or his fundamentals. I watched videos on many different sites including yours but what you were saying made more sense especially in what mr hogan was doing. So I just kept watching mr hogans swing and studying more. I didn't practice swinging anything - just watched and tried to feel it in my mind. I'm stuck working on a tiny island in the Caribbean with no golf course so I can't practice. But 2 days ago I got a chance to go the main island with a course and play 18 holes. I just tried to swing using the fundamentals you are teaching and as the round went on I got better and better and then birdied 4 of the last 5 holes and shot a 1 under 70. I still don't know what to think of this and I swear to you it's true. Thanks.

Cristo. This by far your best video on Mr. Hogan's "secret". I have been playing for 47 years and have been a student of the swing for the last 25 years. I too believe this was the move that changed his game. It is a very intense move and requires a great deal of courage to trust each and every day. In my swing work over the years when I have focused on earlier supination my strikes are more solid and I never, and I mean never move the ball left with this move. The most difficult of all is doing this with the long irons and driver. Keep up the good work all these years.

I am working on that swing and have to admit it has been a struggle....had a shoulder injury that has prevented me
from practicing....been a fan of Ben Hogan since the early 90's....I have read his book, Modern Fundamental of Golf, but
not fully understanding it as well as you have.....gave the book to my nephew and had to purchase another one
because of my play was deteriorating .....your website and videos have been and still are a great source of help in
achieving success in my golf game.... thank you.

Seems to me that a lot of golfers here expect to do this move overnight. You can't start in the middle and ignore grip, stance and the back swing. In Five Lessons Mr. Hogan paid a bundle to have Tony Ravielli illustrate. He was an anatomical illustrator who's main work was for the medical profession. He HAD to be exact and Hogan was a perfectionist and wouldn't allow any other way. Nobody can explain everything in words. Look closely at the illustrations and copy what you see.
Cristo, I think you got it because you went about it in a total effort over several years. Intelligent, athletic and clearly spoken.....Thanks.

I have been studying Hogan's swing for the last several years. I did not play golf until was well into my thirties. I worked my self down to a 12 handicap but mainly though reasonable short game. I was never a good ball striker but slapped the ball around the course. Using your tip in concert with getting to my left knee as the first downswing move I can actually strike the ball. My drives went from 210 to 240 and my seven iron from 145 to 160. The trajectory is far better and the accuracy far improved. I moved from 24% GIR to almost 40% and that is in weeks. I'm 66 and now I'm the best I've ever been. I believe in a month or so I will be a single digit handicapper. Never thought I'd see it. Thanks

Great analysis. I agree with every point. I learned this game from 5 lessons and I have a very different take on the secret. In that book Mr. Hogan states, "You have to dig it out of the dirt." He also points out that swings of good golfers look different because people are different anatomically. 1) Grip 2) Stance 3) Posture 4) Back 5) Through. Every good golfer does these 5 things very well, very repetitively, and very strictly confined to what their given anatomy is capable of doing. Thus, if you want to, say, eliminate the hook, you have to experiment within your ability to perform those 5 simple fundamentals to find the change that will eliminate the hook. In other words, you have to dig it out of the dirt.

Christo, I stumbled across this move three years ago and had it for a a short period of time but because of infrequent play and practice it disappeared. I recently purchased and read Five Lessons and began implementing the the swing principles and made some progress but the wild slap slice shot would rear its ugly head occasionally. I had a breakthrough before watching this video a couple of days ago about the wrist pronate at the top to supinate at the bottom; however, this seemed to produce a wild hook most of the time. It wasn't until I saw your video of you touring the Hogan plant and handling Mr. Hogan's clubs that I realized that my grip although weak now still was not weak enough. Today, I started griping the club with the left thumb at 11:30 not at 12:00 or 1:00. This allows me to swing through the ball aggressively with a boring trajectory with a slight fall off fade. I totally agree with your analysis...the secret is a combination of changes including the weak grip, body rotation, and supination through impact. Well done...

    Chris,
I have watched you vids for over a year now and have in the past tried to swing like Hogan in 5 lessons. It would work for a short time, I would think I had it only to loose it a week or two later. The reason is that I didn't know exactly what I was actually doing. Your break downs are simply amazing. I now know what I should be doing and more importantly, I can feel what I'm doing so when I get off I can self correct by following the fundamentals you have opened my eyes to, thank you .

I just practiced about a week ago and I had prior been suffering from a bad hook with my woods and long irons. When I got to the range I had it in my mind to fix my hook. I've always modeled my swing after Ben Hogan, but for some reason a piece was missing that I couldn't figure out. As I was about to hit my first ball, I tried something, I suppenated my wrist before the impact zone and held it through. BANG! Hook gone, slight fade, sticking every green. I totally agree, this was Hogan's Secret.

I've been golfing since I was 7. I'm now 45 and my story is similar to yours. Just this year, amazingly, I read 5 Lessons for the first time. Soon after, I found your videos and ever since I've been revamping my swing. I've analyzed every video I can find of Hogan and with that, combined with trial and error and pro coaching with the Hogan swing goal in mind, I believe you are mostly if not totally correct in your assessment of the secret. I find I hit Shangri La simply due to the bumping forward of the leading hip in the down swing as it brings the downward swing path under plane and adjusts the club face accordingly. So I don't even think about that anymore as it just kinda happens for me. It was figuring out the pivot and extension after contact that took the most time in my case. Thanks a lot for your vids. I've watched this one at least a dozen times now and this one in particular really got me past that last hurdle in understanding the swing. I'm now one club less and enjoying the best accuracy I've had in my 45 years. Although I still have plenty more to learn, I have a renewed love for the game.

Hi Christo I personally got got something from Ben Hogan 5 lessons that has helped me tremendously providing I view my left arm as an inert piece of robe. Whenever I look at Hogan's downswing I see him as using his complete right side with the left side passive and inert on the downswing. Hogan often said he wished he had three right hands available to him at the moment of impact. Also in his book he talks about the pressure point he uses with the knuckle of the index finger of his right hand in which I surmises he uses this to hold the leg the last second. He also does not cock his right wrist as he would cock his left. The back of his right hand went back as if he was going to slap a person in the face with his right hand. Not hinged as some teachers advocate today like hammering a nail. I find that when I start my downswing with my right hip and apply the aforementioned pressure coming from the knuckle of my right index finger throughout my swing I consistently have beautiful shots.

Your thoughtfulness and enthusiasm, not to mention your assessment is on the money. When you do the mechanics Hogan devised the club face is square to the
target and all you need do is let it happen following the ball down the line.

  • @rickcicalo410

Chris, great video. I think you have really done a great job studying Mr. Hogan's swing. This is the most logical and clear explanation of "The Secret". I would offer one more detail that I think is also important. Mr. Hogan's upper right arm on the downswing is against the right side of his rib cage (sort of where the seam running down right side of a shirt would be) and as he rotates his body, while maintaining his spine angle, the upper part of his right arm stays right there. You can really see it at 2:07 of the video, again at 7:52 and again at 8:27. There is no throwing the club at the ball with the arms and leaving the body behind. After impact, the weight of the club pulls his arms to full extension and a beautiful finish. I am not saying he uses tension to lock his upper right arm against his right side. Rather, I believe his arms are passive as he starts the downswing with the lower body and his arms just go along for the ride until the hands are about hip high (Shangri-La territory) and then he applies the "hit", wishing he had three right hands.

Nice looking swing! I know you've had to dig deep to find that pureness. I used to work really hard on my swing... Hogan does say in 5 lessons that "our method will stress what you do to achieve the result you're after". Boy, ain't that the Truth. After my mind snapped searching for Hogan 's secret, I finally just let go. Now, I am working on listening better and it's really working well. Thanks for all of your help along The Way Christo!

spot on. I did the exact same thing to prevent my club face from closing down. I think a weak grip with a bowed wrist into impact is the only true way to avoid shutting the face while still delofting the club.

    thanks again Christo
I hit approx 150 balls on the practice hole at our course today.
started with 9irons and tried to really focus on the flat left wrist.....after approx 30 or so shots i had a bit of an "aha" moment.
Part of the reason I have found it so challenging to consistently hit shots with the flat left wrist - even after getting the transition right is that i have simply not been squaring the club face with my hands forward enough on the PW, 9irons and 7iron s. small adjustment !!

Seeing you on that range brought back memories for me. I grew up playing Eaton Canyon and worked there during high school. It was one my favorite driving ranges/practice facilities. Nothing like hitting into those San Gabriel mountains. Fun fact: They used to have a car in the middle of the driving range about 120 yards out for you to hit. It used to be a hidden gem for those who knew about it. Probably not the case anymore.

Great work. Tried it and it worked like a charm. I would like to simplify it. On the back swing the upper arm or brachium rotates externally or outward and back. We then internally rotate the upper arm on the way down which closes the club face and promotes a duck hook. Hogan externally rotated the arm more to start the down swing which delayed his release more, produced the tucked right elbow and added a ton of power to the eventual release when he straightened the right arm through impact. Another way of looking at the move that simplifies it.

  • @caddismaster

In the Preface of Hogan's Five Lesson's the author stated that there was not anything on the typewriter that could demonstrate Mr Hogan's intensity when he was making an instructional point. This statement was in reference to what Mr Hogan found when he would rotate the cluhead away from the target on the backswing and then he would rotate the clubhead torward the target on the downswing. He adamantly stated that it had to be done with the left forearm only. This move he made with his left forearm created much more clubhead speed without exerting a lot more effort into the swing. That is the secret move you've found. The funny thing about it is that it is mentioned only in the preface of the book but its so much a very important part of his technique. As mr Hogan stated its all about the propewr sequence of the swing. I enjoy watching your evolution keep it up.

This is what I have been practicing the last month. I got to tell you it is an amazing feeling when you hit 80% fairways and 80% greens. My divots are no bigger then 4-5 inches. I'm also doing something that freaked me out. I'm plucking the ball clean off the fairway, leaving no divot. My ball flies with a pretty draw or fade (Depending on open or closed club) and it feels like I'm just swinging a practice swing. i don't know how I'm doing it but I do it a few times during a round. Just found this video and love it. I always felt the turning of the face of the golf club at the top of the swing, which everybody seem to practice, made sense only to make the golf square off in a slap fashion at the point of impact, if anything to make it more dynamic and fast with the idea in mind to get more speed and distance. however, I found some version of the shangrila on my own that worked even better without compromising distance and speed for the sake of direction. But my version was complicated at the top of the swing, because cupping the wrist at the top made the set up unstable and uncomfortable, which is not what I wanted, which is to feel no fear while swinging full power trusting the path and the face of the club to be correct. Great lesson deep inside the point, thank you

    Hi Chris,
I was into your program a few years ago. ( Great Program!) Medical issues has kept me away. I have always been a fan Of the Five Lessons, especially the Pane of glass on your shoulders. I think the Push/ Pull technic is the way to do it? To me at the finish of the back swing you pull your right arm/ shoulder to start the down swing staying connected through the the ball . As long as you have a proper grip and set up by starting the down the swing by pulling your right arm it fires your right side through the ball executing all the moves in sequence, your left hip automatically fires through first. Again, as long as you stay in posture you can see you can see your right shoulder go under your chin replacing where your left shoulder was. To me, it happen so quick you don't have time to think and as long as you stay in your posture and are connected with your head behind the ball , your good? Again, works for me and is very repeatable and effortless. Thanks

Hi Christ, I have to say this. I admire your diligence and ability of contemplation so much. what you have done is GREATNESS. btw this is the movement that some mentioned as "cupping under", right? but most of them interpret it as cupping of the left wrist. IMHO, the cupping wrist which is going under is the right wrist, rolled down by your hogan roll position. that ensures the right hand move in a full circle before impact, creating a lot of power and very little side spin.

Once I reach the top of my backswing, I try to keep the club head in the same spot as I drop my elbow in front of my hip. I don't try to push or pull with the hands at all, which was what Hogan described as "the free ride down." Now, once the club is slotted and I'm guaranteed to come at the ball from the inside, then I hit with my "3 right hands", and also left, and I also thrust with the lower body.

    @hd4ms 11 лет назад

yes, that is correct. As Hogan explained in 5 Lessons, you have llittle time to think about what's happening just prior to contact - especially your hands. Once you start the downswing with the hips, you think of only 'hitting through the ball' (pg 96). I only suggest you must train yourself to get setup & wound-up properly then rhythmically time the downswing to meet the ball left-wrist supinated. If you have to think about it just before impact, you're doomed. Key: hands ahead of Clubhead.

I have watched this video 50 times or so. It enabled me to break 80 after playing for more than 30 years (Shot 78 on 4 July 2017). Is it Hogan's secret? I don't know. But it's been my secret. My drives took on great consistency. No slice; no fade. Christo has been a great technical influence on my swing, as well as an inspiration to my golf game in general. I think he's brilliant.

Ok I have tried for years to attempt to find Hogans secret and have tried numerous of the secrets which have surfaced for decades. I think you are either very close or 100% on it. I gave up and just hit a draw for years, great way to play but it cost me numerous tournaments and club championships under pressure. Its exactly as you said I would try to lag by pointing the butt of the club down the target line in the downswing but it will lead to a blocked shot or hook unless perfectly timed. So for me I found if I bow the right wrist the left automatically supinates and then this is what Hogan was stating with the right elbow in the side and firing the hips. I have never hit the ball as straight or long as I do now. It has been foolproof so far.Good job on this if its not his secret its an awesome way to hit the ball straight far and without fear.

In 1941 Hogan finished in the top TWO 16 times and the top 5 26 times on his way to a stroke ave. UNDER 71 which was incredible at that time. He wasn't hooking badly then and by the middle of 1941 had become the most consistent player in the world. He led the tour in stroke ave. and money for the 2nd of 3 straight years before going into the service. In that interview he was referring to his play on tour before 1940. He was so good by 1941 that the press was calling him inhuman. What he did in 1946 was to totally commit to the fade. And remember he in reality, won his 1st major in 1942 at the Hale America National Open where he shot the lowest single round score (62) in highest level golf up to that time. Between 1940 and 1947 he finished in the top 5 in 12 straight modern majors. The next longest streak ever is 7.

Christo your videos are an inspiration.
I like the way you practise the "feel" of a move rather than trying to describe it literally.
I played in a matchplay game last night and hit it really well, I believe it was down to imagining your swing.
    Tee>Fairway>Green>2 putts.
    It's an easy game this.

Christo - keep up the good work! I just wanted to thank you because your tip on slotsville and shangri-la was the key that helped my swing. It's been about about 2 months now but I shot the best round of my life, a -4, 68 (9 birdies, 5 bogies) two weeks after watching this video. Granted, it was a 6215 yard course but it was awesome!

Dropping the club under plane has been a huge game changer for me. The hard part has been trusting this. It is amazing how straight and true the ball flies with this. Especially the driver. The hard part for me is keeping the right elbow into the body, but when I do this...OH BABY!

@@MiracleSwingExperience I'll add one more thing. The asst. pro that gave me the lesson encouraged the Hogan swing with me. Once the club dropped back behind, the only thing he added was to use the the upper core to turn likenyounsaidnin the video toward the target (between the navel and xyphoid process, ala McHatton saying to do "the work"). Keep the arms and soft and KABOOM!

I haven't decided if I'm going to revamp fully or not (because my swing works...for now), but I'd like to at least try it for a while.

  • @jcrown7

great stuff christo. also think that he often dropped it underplane and still had a cup in his wrist as it would force him to come OTT / throw the club from a bowed position. The cupped wrist from shang-ri-la position then allows greater forearm and wrist rotation (ie power) into the ball and so long as the pivot is rotating faster than the hands / wrists in the follow through, the club won't flip and will stay square to the target line. The intent should also be to maintain wrist cock through

@myswingevolution, this video opened some lights for me. I remember years ago trying to come way inside (swing I was (and still am!) over the top), and hit some of the best shots ever. For some reason I listened to other golfers and went back to an upright swing, since it feels more natural.
From this day, back to Ben Hogan and I stop trying other techniques.
By the way, your swing is now better than most tour pros, learn to be a better putter and you will be a scratch player!
    Thanks again

Golf is as much a discipline as it is a sport. Christo has taken his martial arts discipline and applied to golf....very successfully. I believe he has captured the essence of the Hogan move. All the good golfers get those hands into the "hold" ....Zach Johnson does it. This allows the square face to have the longest path thru impact and down the line. Congrats Christo and thanks for your spot on analysis.

When I first read 5 Lessons, I worked on it for a few months and eventually shot my best round ever at the time (77 with a 34 front side). On my best days, I could hammer the ball like never before...my guess is that I was rotating the shaft like you describe. However, I fought a hook so I went to a pro who switched my grip to ultra-strong. I should have run for the hills! I can't wait to try this out...I need to get over some long-standing pain first.
    Great job Christo!

Great analysis man, i have been studying Ben Hogan Grip since 1 year now and i haven´t notice the "Shangri-la" Really genius. Also, that "short" left thump, in his book he said that the left thump should be on the middle on the shaft grip, not the right side ad usually right handed player use it, that goes all the way with the hands position.
I have putt this swing to a couple of rounds and usually i miss my shots to the right, because i was trying to release the club instead of turning, that resulted in a sad sway.
Thanks for the video, really cool channel btw.

Chris, once again, brilliant video. I struggle with hooking the ball and I can see how this "adjustment" will be huge. I've heard a suggestion that the feeling is like a 3/4 punch shot. This move has also got to help with lag, keeping the club heads behind the hands at impact.

  • @MiracleSwingExperience
    @MiracleSwingExperience  11 лет назад

Yes. You'll notice how he talks about the wrist bone of the left hand pointing at the target, but you can only do that with the correct grip that he demonstrates.

I'm re-watching this after a year and I think I understand the "secret" better now. The "secret" was a result of his anti hook work. What causes a hook? Flipping the club or rapid closing of the face. Your absolutely right Christo, he sets his wrists before impact then just arcs of the club as fast as his body will let him.

    hey christo
I dig what you are saying
I have always got my distance on my drives in reverse to what you are describing
ie i fall into the slot as I know it but when I come thru impact i really fire my wrists down the line of the shot i want to hit. This feels safe and easy on the driver but i always struggled with this on the irons.
i will give it a go as you describe and come back with feedback

This is the missing link for me. I saw this yesterday, went out to a field behind my house and started trying to work out how this felt. Where I create speed in my swing is from kind of laying off or what seems to me like letting the club bounce into my shoulders at the top to bounce back with good speed/lag. This/your move, once I taught my wrist to allow me to do it, lets me turn as FAST AS I CAN, and hit a 6 iron MP-32 where it would roll out well past 200, thanks for allowing free viewing.

  • @faithfulhouse1063

You got it, bud. This is exactly what my own swing theories have proved. Keep the hands in a preset relationship coming through the ball - left wrist supinated MATED with the right hand trailing, (kind of like your "iron palm" notion.) This left wrist/right palm relationship is to be realized coming down from the top, (and is kind of like a ski-lift when it gets into it's slot. Weird thought, I know.) I never thought about your "shangri-la" name for the mid-downswing position, but that IS kind of a gateway to that magic position.
    Good job.

This is a brilliant golf video detailing Hogan's secret/swing technique! If I wasn't between F/T work I would send this guy a check- no kidding! I stripped three 7- irons yesterday and 5 more just now with practise balls in the lot x street. This will mostly help and connect the dots for low to mid-handicappers my opinion. Thank you Christo, I will mess around with it at the range, I have several ideas. I am trying to figure out slotsville though. I am more concerned about the feel for it(I really do not know how it(slotsville) feels like, so far my swing feels like it has a top and bottom, no middle, so that in relation to my body and swing, I know where I am at and which feel will do what. So far your videos have been consistent with my thoughts. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK. I will touch base with your next vid!
