I'm just reading Billie Holidays autobiography Lady sings the blues and she actually states singing wasn't his kind of stuff, he really just wanted to be a dancer and had no interest in singing in the first place....
@@dynamite3690 Very interesting! The late great Chick Corea wanted to be a jazz drummer before concentrating on piano. Their second choice worked out well!!!
@@dynamite3690 Mel could do it all, write, sing and play about every instrument out there. Joe Morello's first choice was violin and he was trained by a maestro with his eyes set on being an orchestra violinist until his instructor told him with his limited eyesight, he wouldn't be able to see the baton. So he picked up drums. Go figure!!!! By the way, Mel is one of my favorite drummers!
I'm in love. Mel was so cute, including dimples, and I wish I could go back in time...back...back....ruby slippers. Back! I want then. Not now. Gershwin, Kern YES.
You can say that again. 20's, 30's and 40's America, and the creation of the Great American songbook. Gershwin, Kern, Berlin, Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter, and Frank Loesser.
That last “Fascinating Rhythm” is the sexiest thing I’ve ever heard, the chords that follow the vocal melody are so unusual but WOW DO THEY SOUND AMAZING and hen the vocal turns into a literal trumpet, WOW! Mel was class, pure class
Yes Mel played was an excellant drummer but also plays Ukele and piano He wrote the Classic Christmas song ie Chestnuts Roasting etc on piano im thinking ? Simple cords but used in a melodic way check out Mel playing When Sunny gets Blue wow !
I had no idea, he was also a drummer. Every time I think I know all there is to know about Mel Torme, I find out something I didn't know and am amazed all over again at the depth of this man's talent.
For me it was also a surprise that Fred Astaire was also a great piano player. These people was truly talented! Torme is a very good musician and singer as well.
There is that famous number where Astaire plays the drums with sticks and feet. Not as good a singer as Torme, obviously, but a better drummer to my ears..
And Fred Astaire also was a uniquely good singer who many composers wrote for, and he himself wrote some songs. And he was a good actor, and in dramatic films; "On The Beach", with Gregory Peck, was a post-apocalyptic nuclear war drama!
Nice statement...yes Frank & Dino & Perry & Bing were in the bathroom together...Bing said Torme was the best singer he ever heard...I saw Mel work live in Australia in the mid '70's...mind blowing stuff....he rocked the Casbah right off its foundations...and some...closed with Route 66 with his drummer Butch Miles at the rythmn helm....phew!!!!
This guy is seriously awesome thanx to my parents my brother and i absorbed some of this music while we were playing meccano or lego on the carpet thanx mum and dad and thanx to the person who posted this neat clip of a classic song by a genuine singer musician what a blast
Ce qui est incroyable c’est la modernité de son chant. Ça a été enregistré il y a longtemps j’imagine et c’est un swing et une façon de chanter totalement actuelle.
They just don't make them like this anymore. They could do it all. There's an Rod Serling play where he plays Mickey Rooney's brother. Just brilliantly underplayed .
He could play games with the phrasing he could stretch it a compact it he was that good! He played his drumming sensibilities to his singing! Stretching the beat out compacting it like playing an accordion!
He had got the cheerful... funny... master cool.. relaxed manners.. also with great top talented skills. Very Rare Phenomenal Artist !!! ... so different from Frank Sinatra that quite serious Mafia looks.... to me .. imo
Mel doesn't get credit for it, but he was one of the greatest jazz vocalists of all time!
Real jazz fans know all about him.

Hes world famous, what missing credit?

Just read Priscilla's book and apparently Elvis shot a tv bc he didn't like Mel... I'd take Mel over Elvis amy day!
I like both of them, but I don't see how anybody could dislike Mel.
I'm in love. Mel was so cute, including dimples, and I wish I could go back in time...back...back....ruby slippers. Back! I want then. Not now. Gershwin, Kern YES.
Me, too, what a great time for music! Mel was the all time best male singer in the business!
You can say that again. 20's, 30's and 40's America, and the creation of the Great American songbook. Gershwin, Kern, Berlin, Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter, and Frank Loesser.
It’s those last 5 chords coupled with Mel’s voice that FINISHED ME completely!
A friend named Harry turned me onto Mel Tormé a few years back. Have loved the guy ever since.
Best male jazz singer ever. In my humble opinion.
That last “Fascinating Rhythm” is the sexiest thing I’ve ever heard, the chords that follow the vocal melody are so unusual but WOW DO THEY SOUND AMAZING and hen the vocal turns into a literal trumpet, WOW! Mel was class, pure class
Another example of Jewish excellence. I think they have one-up on us.
@@pamtebelman2321 who is us?!
@@pamtebelman2321 Indeed.
@@pamtebelman2321what does being Jewish have to do with it? I heard that he was a octoroon black man.
How absolutely cool is Mel????
you should put ( ! ) in front of ( ? ) so it stand out as a retorical question because no one will answer :) :P
* Mel could take even the corniest song and re-invent it into something incredibly cool! ☺
too cool for words just groove cool cats
very.
I miss my friend, the gracious and thoughtful Velvet Fog.
Yes Mel played was an excellant drummer but also plays Ukele and piano He wrote the Classic Christmas song ie Chestnuts Roasting etc on piano im thinking ? Simple cords but used in a melodic way check out Mel playing When Sunny gets Blue wow !
What an artist. Mel was unique.

You simply read a Wikipedia page on Mel or any other artist, and you learn anything you need to know.
I heard him drum on the Jerry Lewis Telethon, in the 80s.
I didn't know he was such a good drummer as well!
For me it was also a surprise that Fred Astaire was also a great piano player. These people was truly talented! Torme is a very good musician and singer as well.

Multi-talented was the name of the game back in those days...Bobby Darin and Sammy Davis Jr. as well...
He's truly in the Top 10 of all crooners to ever live.
Me encanta mel torme
mr prerfect. without a doubt!!
What a ham. I love this guy.
walking towards the camera... I have one thing to say, sashay, shantay.... lol

Michael Buble, who?
Nice statement...yes Frank & Dino & Perry & Bing were in the bathroom together...Bing said Torme was the best singer he ever heard...I saw Mel work live in Australia in the mid '70's...mind blowing stuff....he rocked the Casbah right off its foundations...and some...closed with Route 66 with his drummer Butch Miles at the rythmn helm....phew!!!!
Lucky you! Would have loved to have heard him live!
Wow, that is great!
Haven't seen socks since about 1968...that's really really a long time, folks. C'mon. Isn't this punishment enough?
Mel is a total pimp and a consumate entertainer. Talent such as his is all but lost to us now. Unparallelled.
Well that was a revelation
You are right and he sure had talent!!! Like most entertainers of that day...talent was a requirement...dancing singing and musicianship
Alex Archbold from "Curiosity Inc" looks like young Mel Torme.
He is fucking unbelievable! Now everyone run and check out his cover of Donald Fagen's 'Goodbye Look' ...
Brilliant, Perfect, Professional, Competent, and (if I'm not mistaken) LIVE.
Ditto, Mel was the best.
This guy is seriously awesome thanx to my parents my brother and i absorbed some of this music while we were playing meccano or lego on the carpet thanx mum and dad and thanx to the person who posted this neat clip of a classic song by a genuine singer musician what a blast

The velvet fog.
Ce qui est incroyable c’est la modernité de son chant. Ça a été enregistré il y a longtemps j’imagine et c’est un swing et une façon de chanter totalement actuelle.
is there some kind of piano/vocal sheet music for this specific arrangement anywhere?
I thought Mel Torme was a fictional character from Night Court
Mel shows the first instrument to learn is rhythm.
Except for Sean Nós.
Simply fantastic! Thanks for posting!

They just don't make them like this anymore. They could do it all. There's an Rod Serling play where he plays Mickey Rooney's brother. Just brilliantly underplayed .
The Comedian from Playhouse 90 is what you're thinking of.
Love that voice!
This is how you make a music video, people.
Holy crap, Melvin was the most!
No wonder Harry was such a Mel torme fan on night court
Back when people actually had talent! Now that's entertainment and he didn't take off any clothes or curse!
Fantastic video...most videos I've seen Mel is much older. He was really think back then! And what a voice!!!

Spectacular years!
Now ... dull boring ... not even what i call “music”
WHAT A BOSSS!!!
Moshe, It's amazing when other musicians admit who the REAL huge talent is !!
Bing knew, and said so.
That took courage.
Yes, Mel was HUGE !!
1:41 top left corner, there's a mic in the shot.
He had got the cheerful... funny... master cool.. relaxed manners.. also with great top talented skills. Very Rare Phenomenal Artist !!! ... so different from Frank Sinatra that quite serious Mafia looks.... to me .. imo
Apparently he hated the Velvet Fog nickname and called himself the Velvet Frog. A disc jockey made up the name and it stuck.
excellent
This is not Nick Rivers!
Amazing as usual, and the picture quality is something else!
Thank You!
Thanks for posting....!
his voice is like a soft fuzzy blanket
His knick name was the"velvet frog"

Night court led me here
He woundn't've gotten the gig with the Beatles...they hated drum solos.
