Nice. Let's wait your audience finally understands why hazards are a neccesity for single-games, because switching/pivoting without punishment is easily one of the biggest problems in Pokémon, and is also one of the reasons the current OU format is heavily bulky.
The current OU is so bulky because every team that isn't hyper offence has to have a physdef clef/buzzwole to not get 6-0ed by banded urshi and every team needs a blissey/mandibuzz/ttar for spectrier and those mons are strong enough to where they need dedicated counters at high health, meaning you normally need at least one more defensive piece to not get run over by their teammates. You need a super bulky/regen core to deal with the top threats unless you run HO which is an inconsistant playstyle that a lot of people don't like using. Bulky mons end up lasting longer and getting knock-offed especially on stall teams making boots and therefore no punishment on switches only good for balance which is the best team style to deal with urshi/spec.
Seems weird to me that Pokémon would rather give us a means to bypass hazards entirely than to just change how Stealth Rock works. I'm almost positive the they were added specifically for the rock-weak Pokémon
@@grunkleg.2934 At this point Stealth Rock is a neccesity and fucking around with it would cause more problems than it's worth. People at one moment were entertaining the idea of banning boots or inserting an item clause in the format, that's how powerful ignoring hazards is, almost every mon with pivoting moves uses them now.
@@AyuNico I dunno. I just don't think it's good that they more heavily punish Pokémon weak to Rock for switching than those that are neutral/resist. HDB could also change so that they break after a Pokémon with them on switches in on hazards 3 times. I guess you could also say that Pursuit punishes certain Pokémon more than others, but at least it wasn't everywhere
I think you forget two big things about Parting Shot: the 1° is Z-Parting Shot who was a Lunar Dance type of move (recovering all hp and status of the consequent pokemon) whitout killing the pokemon that used it, and 2° in gen 7/8 was more gived to much variety of pokemon like Incineroar and Obstagoon... Nice video and high quality as always...
I still don't know why they made U Turn and Volt Switch have 70+ power. Seems like such a useful technique should be a tad weaker to offset the value you can get from it

The Dark Type Attack should've been damaging and called "Hit and Run" Though it would be interesting to see Baton Pass-esque moves and those with specific effects. Like say... "Scorched Earth" Which returns back and creates a 1 or 2-turn Fire-Type environmental hazard that damages any non-Fire Type switching in, and can trigger Flash Fire? Or "Ink and Flee" which might be exclusive to something like Octillery and be a non-damaging accuracy reducer? Or "Slipstream" a tailwind-esque non-damaging move that boosts speed by 1, and is priority 1, allowing the user to potentially escape a devastating attack, but if the opponent uses a switching move too will put you at a disadvantage? Or maybe a Flying-Type sound-based attack called "Sonic Boom"?
Hit and Run... idk, I don't think GF would call it that, but have it be an attack wasn't the problem. It was mainly the pokemon that learned the move wasn't too large and given to the higher tier mons. Scorched Earth feels even worse than SR in my opinion, as it's a switch move that lays a hazard down. Even if it's for 1-2 turns, it makes the opponent predictable for those turns, allowing someone to use it easily to setup or ko something. Especially since you scout out before laying a trap. Ink and Flee... naming aside, it would be good for them... and also annoying as hell cause accuracy drops suck. Slipstream... A Priority Switch Move. That sounds disgusting. And +1 Speed? No. Just no. Finally, Sonic Boom. We already have a Sonicboom move, and even with the space in yours, it would be confusing to tell them apart. Well... while I'm here, here's my idea of a Flying Type Switch Move: Backdraft (40 Power, 15 BP). Users deals damage and switches the user out. The pokemon that replaces it is safe from all entry hazards for that move.
@@eclipse9727 With regards to Scorched Earth, I was actually leaning more toward the idea that the entry hazard would affect *both* mons/the player exclusively. Make it so that the player can activate Flash Fire on a whim, but also set up a temporary entry hazard that can screw *themselves* over if they try to use it recklessly. Also, yeah, I forgot that Sonicboom already existed.
Heh wouldn't it be fun if scorched earth be fire type moves that burns your ally on the switch, y'know to avoid special attacker getting frostbitten or to avoid guts user from getting their flame orb knocked off etc
2:50 But wait, there's a bug where if you have a choice item on a Pokemon that used U-turn and switched into another Pokemon that also has U-turn and a choice item, they're automatically locked into U-turn without selecting a move.
@@crimsoncharizardx9853 because of its low speed, and good defensive typing that has only one weakness, U-turn is even better, as it allows a safe switch in for its teammate. That's the whole idea of a "slow pivot"
I actually like these videos; they go over popular meta-wide competitive strategies and I generally feel I learn more about competitive from one of these videos compared to a 'how good was X pokemon' one... still, all your videos are amazing
I know that this comment is one-year old, but Did you have the slightest idea about how broken trapping abilities were ? Wobbuffet got banned to Uber even before Garchomp solely because of that ability, same deal with Mega Gengar and Gothitelle. Heck, even in Balanced Hackmons, where you could even run something like Impostor Chansey, Shadow Tag was banned and Gengar was forbidden to hold a Gengarite because of that.
One of my favourite moves of all time is U-Turn! 😃 When I first played gen 4 games, I was surprised with its power and effect, not to mention how easy it was to get the TM.
I can't believe you didn't talk about Parting Shot in Gens 7 and 8! Of course, it doesn't do damage, and not many Pokemon have it, so it's pretty niche. But come on, Incineroar has it!
I seriously want Forretress to learn the move "U-Turn"!🔁 Instead he gets "Volt Switch" which is not bad but also not STAB, not physical and Ground type's free switch-in!⚡
Volt switch is a little better in some situations for it because it wouldn't do much more damage on such a low attack pokemon anyway, and volt switch doesn't trigger flame body/static/rocky helmet/rough skin which would all cripple forretress, with most ruining it's sturdy. U turn would be nice on it but volt switch would still see usage.
First stealth rock, and now u-turn and volt switch. This spin-off is turning out quite interesting! Now I'm curious to see which moves get covered next.
Amazing vid as always! Was a really fun and interesting watch! Though Im surprised there was no talk of Intimidate - Parting shot Incineroar on Gen 7 and onwards... I suppose it was mostly due to that being a strat mostly used on doubles?

@@SPZ-gv2on isn't urshi currently being suspected by smogon?
Yes! Absolutely loved the video. Please do more videos who's topics talk about other various mechanics
"Sometimes the only way to survive a situation is to get yourself out of it".
Odd that a "move" episode is the final video of this channel's year, but still a great end year video.
I've always held that choiced Flygon only ever clicks U-turn, technically you have 3 other moves but you only ever click one.
Great overview! Thanks for uploading!
now THIS is a quality topic.
Seems like such a useful technique should be a tad weaker to offset the value you can get from it
Do you want Technician Scizor U-turn? Because that's how you get Technician Scizor U-turn
If they made it base 40 power then technician scyther wouldnt be much different... would hurt a lot of other pokemon though
@@Bluecrimson217 that only one pokemon though.
@@sebastianlucas704Also Scyther, Ambipom, Kricketune
Hope you had a good holiday, you do amazing stuff

Glad to see BKC posting here too
Gen four player I would normally run Stelix to block out U-turn with resisted damage and it wouldn’t allow the person to use volt switch
I know these videos must be harder to make, but they're pretty refreshing and interesting compared to the normal weekly content.
The Dark Type Attack should've been damaging and called "Hit and Run"
Though it would be interesting to see Baton Pass-esque moves and those with specific effects.
Well... while I'm here, here's my idea of a Flying Type Switch Move:
Backdraft (40 Power, 15 BP).
@@TheTaintedWisdom I knew that about Scorched Earth, and I still think it's very exploitable.
Heh wouldn't it be fun if scorched earth be fire type moves that burns your ally on the switch, y'know to avoid special attacker getting frostbitten or to avoid guts user from getting their flame orb knocked off etc
Love this type of video! Great work!
2:50 But wait, there's a bug where if you have a choice item on a Pokemon that used U-turn and switched into another Pokemon that also has U-turn and a choice item, they're automatically locked into U-turn without selecting a move.
yes more of these types of videos pls this one was so good
Who knew that teleport TM you get on the way to Rock Tunnel in RBY would be useful.
I love those different types of analysis!
If U-Turn was boosted by Technician then Scizor would be in AG
No it would be uber, since it’s low speed
@@crimsoncharizardx9853 because of its low speed, and good defensive typing that has only one weakness, U-turn is even better, as it allows a safe switch in for its teammate. That's the whole idea of a "slow pivot"
Great vid as always! Love your stuff.
10:49 did you mean to say SEIZING and maintaining momentum?
You should make the next one of these be about trick room
I actually like these videos; they go over popular meta-wide competitive strategies and I generally feel I learn more about competitive from one of these videos compared to a 'how good was X pokemon' one... still, all your videos are amazing
*Gen 5 starts*
Kellen: Y’all want a dance rave?
Keep up the great work False love your content 💪🏻
Sounds like pursuit needs to comeback with a slight rework along with other moves similar to it. Maybe give shadow tag and arena trap to more mons?
I know that this comment is one-year old, but
Did you have the slightest idea about how broken trapping abilities were ? Wobbuffet got banned to Uber even before Garchomp solely because of that ability, same deal with Mega Gengar and Gothitelle. Heck, even in Balanced Hackmons, where you could even run something like Impostor Chansey, Shadow Tag was banned and Gengar was forbidden to hold a Gengarite because of that.
One of my favourite moves of all time is U-Turn! 😃 When I first played gen 4 games, I was surprised with its power and effect, not to mention how easy it was to get the TM.
Now new switching moves in Gen 8.
YESSSSSSSSSSS, THANK YOU FOR THIS SERIES
I can't believe you didn't talk about Parting Shot in Gens 7 and 8! Of course, it doesn't do damage, and not many Pokemon have it, so it's pretty niche. But come on, Incineroar has it!
waiting for that upcoming genesect/conkeldurr video, keep up the nice work
The moves greatly impacted doubles as well since you can break a sash and immediately intimidate the mons on the field.
Amazing video. I’d love to see how good. Status conditions were such as poison, burn, or paralysis.
Alternate title: How AWESOME were U-turn and Volt Switch ACTUALLY?
3:59 Gengar waving its arms
Heeelloooo!
I seriously want Forretress to learn the move "U-Turn"!🔁
Instead he gets "Volt Switch" which is not bad but also not STAB, not physical and Ground type's free switch-in!⚡
Volt switch is a little better in some situations for it because it wouldn't do much more damage on such a low attack pokemon anyway, and volt switch doesn't trigger flame body/static/rocky helmet/rough skin which would all cripple forretress, with most ruining it's sturdy. U turn would be nice on it but volt switch would still see usage.
@@SPZ-gv2on i respect that statement!👍🏻
but why
why buff Ferrothorn? It's already annoying

First stealth rock, and now u-turn and volt switch. This spin-off is turning out quite interesting! Now I'm curious to see which moves get covered next.

Banded Scizor's STAB U-Turn is one of my favorite moves to use period
Take a shot everytime ihe says "swish" instead of "switch"
Amazing vid as always! Was a really fun and interesting watch! Though Im surprised there was no talk of Intimidate - Parting shot Incineroar on Gen 7 and onwards... I suppose it was mostly due to that being a strat mostly used on doubles?
HOW GOOD WAS DAMAINATIAN?2 interesting abilities, strong stats AND a galar form
Damainatian is usually a uu lifer and got a galar form that 2 hits everything
