It's worth mentioning that, for the same reason as with Z crystals, hyper beam and its variants are incredibly valuable in gen 8 VGC for boosted dynamax moves. Charizard especially uses Blast Burn regularly for the extra power.
Reasonably common to see Hyper Beam itself on Dynamax Pokémon that don’t have great coverage - Regieleki the most obvious, but also Kyogre. Gives powerful Max Strikes to hit electric immunities (Eleki) or Gastrodon (Ogre that don’t want Ice for some reason). Useful in VGC as a form of speed control.
I've been worried for him since I started watching , obviously there's only so many mons he could cover :(. But now I think he'll be able to keep going with interesting side stuff
@@Tkokat Well not just mons in general I don't think the ones that have existed for a gen or two without much history is going to be a fun watch ya know?
@@Jim7861 It is true not that every pokemon will be interesting. I will give you that. But there are other divisions that they could cover. Like those that are restricted to baby pokemon, so you could squeeze a few vids from there. But yeah, I agree with you
I legitimately think they should reintroduce the 'no recharge on KO' feature - it's a great 'high risk, high reward' dynamic that pairs well with the concept of a 'glass cannon' move.
Chain KO with one of the most powerful move portrayed in anime would serve it right. But then some unknown Mon could takeover a whole tier and the moved would be labelled "broken" again. Though it would be a fun"broken" move, unlike pre-nerfed dark void or behemoth blade
@@rekxar6314 not exactly, there's no way to get it working how it was without changing the description for double battles, so it won't be noticed where it could matter, it would only be broken by something like belly drum Snorlax or turn 5 regigigas
I like that idea a lot on paper, but I’m not sure if it would be a good idea in practice. Pokémon have gotten much, much stronger since Gen 1. Boosting items exist, offensive stats are better, coverage movepools surrounding hyper beam are much better, ev system makes everything generally less bulky, passive damage which was virtually nonexistent in Gen 1 is now completely omnipresent. Hell, hyper offense has fringe options like Healing Wish that can give something a second shot at a sweep. I think it would be way too easy and quick in any Gen going back to 3 or 4 to weaken a team enough for something to clean house with beam.
@@harb1ng3r82 You're absolutely right that this idea probably wouldn't work in reality, especially because of the massive power creep Pokemon has seen over the years. I only suggested it because I wish the competitive meta was a little more diverse and flexible with its strategies, instead of pigeon-holing everyone into the same old tactics everyone uses. I'm generalising, of course, but I think more elements of risk and reward would benefit the game overall. But, then again, this is probably why I should never be allowed to design Pokemon games.
I'd like to give an honourable mention to Mega Pidgeot, as while it didn't *quite* end up being up to par for OU in either Gen 6 or 7, while it was used in the tier, some had messed around with Hyper Beam in order to OHKO Zapdos after rocks, as it really just lacked the option to break through it and could open things up for its teammates.
also, while not an "official" metagame, hyper beam and co. are pretty important in 1v1s. When all you need to do is defeat a single pokemon, then then recoil becomes a non-factor if the increased power allows for a quick kill.
It is worth to point out that Hyper Beam was used on VGC by the same guy who invented Ion Deluge Pachirisu, they slapped Hyper Beam on their Hydreigon to use in conjunction with Ion Deluge as a way to destroy Azumarill, one of his best counters.
@@sussy3778 The description does read, "Also this video is mainly about Singles and not VGC." Otherwise there would be another section of moderate length just talking about dynamax moves in VGC.
well hes starting to run outta pokes i mean DURANT was in a recent vid my god lmao fsg is one of the best tubers so he'll definitely find a lot of material for vids
was it? that proves my point even more then. hes running out of competitive pokemon so im looking forward to more vids about moves, items, abilites, ect. maybe some vids on generation pokemon tier lists, players, events, ect. too? i dunno he probably has a backlog of topics already and competitive pokemon runs DEEP
I feel like you could justify a full video on the Gen 4 physical/special split and the winners and losers. Easily in my mind one of the best tweaks to Pokemon mechanics.
It's honestly baffling it took them until Gen 4 to do that. There were so many more completely redundant moves that were redundant because of the way physical and special was calculated before gen 4. A good example of this is Blaze Kick, they introduced this in Gen 3 as a sort of special move for blaziken, but because of the ass backward design of having all moves of the fire type be special moves it was completely outclassed by flamethrower. Not to mention the huge ass problem of Ghost moves being physical and Dark moves being special, which hard fucks over most Pokemon of those types who wanted to utilize STAB since most ghosts were special attackers and most dark types were physical attackers.
@@justsomeweirdperson there where other mons alongside gengar that seriously benefitted from the split, absol is an obvious example, but others would be sharpedo, crawdaunt, gyarados, misdreavus and sneasel
As much as I love Hyper Beam, I would argue Amnesia or Sleep Talk (+Rest) were more heavily nerfed, Amnesia went from a move that gave 2 calm minds in 1 turn (basically geomancy without the speed boost with any items) to just a special defense boosting move, which has basically 0 use. Rest Talk while still viable past gen 2, was broken in gen 2 such that you would heal for free without any rest pp if sleep talk used rest while asleep, which safe to say made everything really hard to kill.
I mean, Dark Void kinda got oofed really hard throughout the generations. It's debatable about not letting Smeargle use it is a nerf. But lowering the accuracy to a point in which Darkrai runs Hypnosis in singles instead is pretty dreadful.
@@orionl7406 thats a completely different category. Dark Void is supposed to be a beefed up hypnosis. Hypnosis is a pretty common move thus dark void deserved to be special and it was. It was made WORSE than a common move. Plus (this isnt relevant) regigigas is not even an OU pokemon, let alone ubers.
@@peeturpain9379 sad that the sucky ability lands it in PU. A LEGENDARY IN PU. Dear god i love that balanced hackmons gave it such a good poison heal with STAB facade
If there is anything this series taught me and warms my heart, is never to underestimate the tenacity and love of competitive Pokémon players. They will go to any and all lengths to make their favorites work.
100%. It's my favourite moment every time watching any tournament: seeing an unusual Pokémon being used because the trainer likes it so much. It's like Karen said in Gen 2: "Truly skilled trainers try to win with their favourite."
@order-sol's last brain cell The truth is that China is the greatest country on the face of the earth. It makes all other countries look insignificant and contemptible. It is the most brilliant, most industrious, most ambitious, most educated, meritocratic and technocratic, most modern, sophisticated, and civilised, and best-governed by far. . It is the first non-white, non-Western country to reach this status since the 1600s. The determination of this country is indescribable. Supernatural. There is no force that can stop it from accomplishing anything it wants to do. It doesn’t matter who we are. Egyptians, Syrians, Pakistanis, Indians, Africans, even Americans. Next to the Chinese, we are pathetic. We can’t do what they do. We would have a mountain, an Everest of changes to make, and we would whine and bicker and fail at every one of them. China’s story since the 1980s has been one of an almost divine metamorphosis. Next to China the entire Western world from Alaska to New Zealand has stagnated. Next to China the entire developing world from Brazil to Madagascar has progressed only at a crawl. China is the mother of all gargantuan bullet trains. Every day it manages to create something new and astonishing. And unlike the United States, unlike the British Empire, unlike the French, Dutch, Germans, Spanish, Portuguese or any other Western nation that had its turn at being a superpower in the past four centuries, China doesn’t need to run anybody over or take something from somebody else, to rise majestically. China is also standing up to the West all by herself. The West can’t believe their four-hundred-year-old global supremacy is being challenged. They hoped that the more China developed, the more it would submit to their influence, interests, and leadership. That didn’t happen. So now they will do anything possible, short of a nuclear war, to make China end. Their goal is to destroy this country. That’s why, although the United States has killed several million people and turned several regions of the earth into hellscapes. China is the worst fear of our planet’s Western masters. They want you to despise and dread a country that’s done nothing to you, that hasn’t invaded anyone, bombed or sanctioned anyone, that hasn’t overthrown any foreign government, or used its military on anything since 1979. China is the only major country in the nonwhite developing world, to stand up to the West. To look it in the eye when challenged or threatened. The Global South are simply Western puppets who submitted long ago. Even the most powerful ones. Saudi Arabia, Brazil, India. The 1500s-1000s BC were Egypt’s time. Antiquity belonged to the Greeks and Romans. The 1700s belonged to France, and the 1800s to Britain. From 1945 to the present, the world has been under American overlordship. And they call it the Pax Americana but there isn’t much Pax in it. There’s plenty of Pax if you’re in Europe or Australia. But the Middle East? Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Iran and Yemen in the past 20 years. Latin America? They’ve destroyed that part of the world beyond any hope of recovery. Africa? It’s only been spared because of disinterest. The US sees Africa as nothing. The whole West does. But in the twenty-first century, we are witnessing the rise of China. We are decades away from China becoming the greatest power on earth. This will be China’s time, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Attack China all you want, curse her and monger rumours and hysteria - but the truth is that none of your accusations are backed up by evidence. The Western press is under the thumb of Western governments that want to stay on top of the world for eternity. And the truth is that China is not affected by the noise and maneuvers of her enemies. For her first thirty years, from 1949 to 1979, China was basically blockaded and isolated economically and politically by the West. It didn’t even have a seat in the UN General Assembly. And it was dirt-poor in those days, barely a speck of the global economy, a tiny fraction of Japan’s or Germany’s GDP - not even able to prevent famine. And it still didn’t submit to pressure or take any orders. Why on earth would it do that now? China will be the next global power. There’s nothing that can be done about that. The first stage is that its economy only needs to grow at 4.7 percent per year to become the world’s largest by 2035. That means the usual, historical bare-minimum of 6 percent is already overkill. The US can build as many bases as it wants, slap as many sanctions as it wants, recognise whatever bogus genocides it wants. That’s what it’s been doing all along. Has any of it made a difference? China can adapt to any situation. It took China a mere ten years to go from being barred by the US Congress from participating in the “International” Space Station, to building its own Space Station from zero.
I think calling Porygon-Z “intensely flawed” is an overstatement seeing that it still was UU even back in Gen 4. It’s never broken into OU, but it’s been a BL Knight a few times and in Gen 7 especially it was quite dangerous with Z-moves (just not Breakneck Blitz)
Speaking of Zmoves, z-conversion gave porygon-z what it lack in with the state boost to function. I just hate how with gamefreak removing mega evo and z-moves it takes away the buffs pokemon like porygon-z and Kangaskhan needed to be viable.
Not really, you can be an intensely flawed Pokémon and still be strong or even a BL knight - that's basically been Staraptor's entire competitive life. It tears through pretty much everything in lower tiers because most of the mons that can safely wall or easily man-handle it are OU to the max. If it's a monster when beating up the underdogs but struggles to be anything more than a gimmick in standard play, that all evens out to being a mixed bag. P-Z hits like a truck but at the end of the day, it's a pure Normal type with middling speed and bad bulk who relies on a ton of support to make a difference.
Porygon Z was overhyped, where it was assumed it'd OHKO Blissey with Download at its debut. I still think it's good, wish it has Aura Sphere or Focus Blast since it looks like it can learn those moves.
Porygon Z is also pretty hard to play around if you have a slower team and it's very difficult to wall, considering the part where it can OHKO Blissey. Obviously it's not a metagame defining OU threat for good reason, but if you're not prepared for it, that thing can do some serious damage
Now that you have done the most nerfed move in history (hyper beam) I would like to see a video about knock off the most BUFFED move in history. I think it would be interesting to see how it went from being niche to becoming THE dark type stab move in gen 6
Items are arguably broken so much so that it warrants a move that can remove and deal damage having pitiful damage didn’t justify running it but having the option to deal basic damage after it did it’s job justified it Moves that have only one function and then taking up an entire move slot is generally bad The exception to this is fake out There’s also moves like reflect, light screen and trick room
@@prboy6510 I can see why you say this, but one thing you should keep in mind is that the use of knock off in gen 6 caused knock off to be used more in gens 3,4, and 5. So buffed knock off not only had an impact on gen 6, but also on prevouis gens
I feel like Dialga's Roar of Time should work like gen 1 hyper beam. If you defeat the opponent with it, there's no recharge time. That might seem too busted combined with meteor beam, but I feel like box legendaries signature move should be usable in competitive.
Considering this is the Pokemon of *time*, the ability to manipulate recharge time with successfully pulling it off makes sense thematically too. This is a really cool idea.
Rock Wrecker was overlooked. The exclusive move for the newly added Rhyperior in Gen 4. You know, the one that could run Solid Rock, survive a super effective hit, and then fire off a STAB Rock Wrecker and flat out ruin it's target? What about that?
I wish it wasn't a Hyper Beam clone, just still have the high BP with 90% accuracy (to balance it) or just lower its BP to 100 or 110 but have 100% accuracy, making it preferrable over Stone Edge.
I actually really like Rock Wrecker a lot: absolutely *badass* move name, signature move of Rhyperior until Gen 5, AND amazing power! Sure, it takes one of your turns for it to recharge, but with Defenses like Rhyperior's, it's not really a problem unless you run into a Special Attacker ...unlike with Slow Start
You know, I was actually expecting Wrap to be the move they'd be talking about. It's such a miserable, awful move to deal with in Gen 1 where it can literally kill anything that's not immune by just sheer attrition because of the stupid lockout mechanic it has. Hyper Beam is more thematically fitting though, for sure.
Wrap isn't 100% accurate though, so there's always the chance it can miss, still a good way for mons like Dragonite to safely chip down in range of hyper beam though~
@@ron4tron Switching forces a fresh use of Wrap, wasting PP faster. AgiliWrap Drag is not going to be outsped, and gambling on a miss is unreliable. Drag will get on average 3 hits before you get a chance, when you could pressure it faster by swapping due to the incurred PP costs and faster triggering of 15% miss chances. You want to swap between: Pokémon that don’t care, such as Gengar, Rhydon, Cloyster, Slowbro, Pokémon that have recovery, such as Chansey, Slowbro, etc., and Pokémon that threaten it on a miss, such as ice move users and Rhydon. If all the opponent gets out of Dragonite is the free chip from Wrap, that’s a victory. You just have to know the damage calc ranges for Drag’s Hyper Beam to make sure it can’t kill anything.
Wrap is not very good even in gen 1 though. There is only a single Wrap user in OU, Victreebel, and Victreebel is in the bottom 2 of OU in terms of usage. Gen 1 Wrap sounds way better on paper than it actually is. It has a tiny base power and a shaky 85% accuracy.
With this kind of in-depth research and great narration, any Pokémon content here becomes a master class. Whatever you guys make will be worth watching.
Interestingly, hyper beam and its variants have been pretty good in vgc in gen 8, thanks to dynamax. The max move buff emulates how it affected z moved in gen 7 and things like frenzy plant venusaur, blast burn charizard, and hyper beam regieleki are format staples
Would have loved a "-iate" ability mention since those both boosted hyper beam by 30% and let it hit super effective damage. Fun fact: Mega Gardevoir has the second strongest hyper beam after adaptability Porygon Z because of this. And the strongest that can do super effective damage.
Yep, Sylveon made a boom in gen 6 for this so I'm surprised it didn't get mentioned either. It still occasionally runs Hyper Beam to this day, albeit in NU but still
There’s an easy way to fix Hyper Beam and its variants: follow what _Legends: Arceus_ did and have them lower Speed. Have them cause you to lose 1 or 2 points in Speed after each use. Then suddenly Trick Room becomes a much more viable strategy.
The thing is, in Legends arceus it sort of has the same effect as in other games, since speed affects turn order, which can cause the opponent to be able to attack you twice in a row (although it might still be good for naturally fast mons that would still outspeed after the stat drop)
@@LeafGreen906 that’s true but he didn’t get good use out of STAB until DPP. I think RSE was when it got access to Earthquake, but before that the best it got for the high Attack was body slam double edge and hyper beam. None of which even compares with a good STAB Aqua Tail.
Agreed with how Hyper Beam in the anime made it look better than it was in the game, not to mention how common the move was. At least in Gen 1, Pokemon won't recharge when taking out an opponent with such obscene power. Recharge turns are why for example, one would not run Freeze Shock on Black Kyurem, making it an OU Pokemon from Gens 5-7 due to lack of physical Ice STAB. Imagine if Freeze Shock was Gen 1 Hyper Beam. Also, like to see moves like Explosion/Self Destruct, Payback and Knock Off being covered.
Freeze Shock & Ice Burn are more comparable to Solar Beam than Hyper Beam, because they charge first, then attack, rather than attack first, recharge next turn. One way to make them better could be to just remove the recharge turn in Hail. Both forms of Kyurem could go crazy
To be fair, Kyurem-Black pretty much always ran Freeze Shock in Gen 7, due to Icium Z turning it into a borderline free OHKO move every game. Was quite solid
@@skeetermania3202 They're most likely referring to Subzero Slammer being a usable one turn Ice STAB. Since with Freeze Shock, BK always has to charge before attacking.
I really like this change of pace!! And I think an informative video about moves like this that have changed so much throughout the years is a great thing to pursue every once in a while!
@@captainmega6310 i'm not being specific, but i'm referring to the normal type dynamax pokemons used in the previous format which didnt learn explosion, they had a 150bp max move which destroyed non-resists, especially after a knuckle boost or a teammate's helping hand
I have to say I really liked this format. There's more to Competitive Pokemon than literally just the Pokemon. The moves, abilities, statuses, held items are also all important things as well, so learning about the history of Hyper Beam was super interesting for me. Would love to see more videos like this.
gen 8 vgc "hyper beams" actually have a place on the meta currently because of max moves, charizard's blast burn being the most used one but also roar of time dialga, frenzy plant venusaur, hydro cannon life orb blastoise but also primarina and inteleon (earlier), hyper beam kyogre and some porygon-z in series 6, giga impact regigigas and probably some other im missing
Not just that, but Hyper Beam and Hyper Beam variants are also commonly used in 1v1, since the recharge turn doesn’t matter if you can just OHKO the opponent, especially if it was boosted by an -ate ability.
For Regieleki Hyper Beam is also (aside from ancient power) the only non-electric type special move that it can realistically use, which is why it sometimes runs it
Big Yellow makes an excellent compromise for hyper beam, and keep the no recharge (when you get a KO) as a move mechanic. would make it better but not busted
Love the diverse content comin thru! You mainstay is always the highlight of my week, but seeing new and interesting topics covered is awesome to have too!
Digimon Hyper Beam Clones,Like Chronomon's Corona Blast In DS,Or Gallantmon Crimson Mode's Royal Cannon In Dawn/Dusk,Have No Recharge Turn,So You Can Do That!
Id say that can actually be pretty balanced, given that there is an ability that removes recoil damage from recoil moves, and those can also reach up to 150 base power (head smash, for example). So if its ok for some pokemon to fire off a 150 Base power move whenever it wants with no drawback, why would that not be ok for a move like hyper beam?
I enjoy these move videos so I hope you guys put out more! Explosion and self-destruct would be another great topic as others have pointed out in the comments already.
@@JoIsAwesome Yes, and no. True, Self-destruct's and Explosion's base power were lower - 130 and 170 respectively... BUT in Generation 1 (and others all the way prior to Gen 5), target's Defense was HALVED before inflicting damage, effectively doubling the base power to 260 and 340. And with Gen 2 buffing the base powers of the moves to 200 and 250, their actual power in Gens 2, 3 and 4 were 400 and 500 respectively! Despite it being a Normal-type move, the power was incredible: barring any modifiers like STAB, Explosion was just a bit weaker than supereffective STAB Hydro Pump in the rain! (500 vs 540). Nowadays, Self-Destruct and Explosion are barely seen in competitive nowadays - usually only on Pokemon with '-ate' and '-ize' Abilities, like Aerialiate, Refrigerate or Galvanize.
These types of videos are fun honestly. Id love to see certain histories of moves, abilities or even items ans their impact on the metagame, like even something for the Choice Band and howbthe choice items would impact the metagame. I sy that specifically because when gen 3 came along it seemed to be a big deal too so, thats something i think wouldnbe cool to see in the future
I've watched your videos for a while but I genuinely think this is the first time I've ever seen Hyper Beam's animation in Pokemon Battle Revolution. Guess that shows how little it's seriously used in competitive (post gen 1of course)
Yes!! Please False Swipe, more videos like this 💖 we all love these types of videos. Maybe do it at the end of the month and do 3 reviews for the other weeks? Either way, I agree!
Interestingly, I recall that in the video this channel did on Pidgeot, it was mentioned there that it's mega evolution would sometimes use hyper beam in it's moveset to deal with Rotom Wash, and I feel like that could've potentially been mentioned here, too, given it's arguably one of the more notable uses the move has seen
@@Substantial-hf1rm Yes, but it's still a semi-frequent application of Hyper Beam in the SWSH meta :) both for VGC & singles. volt switch is effectively guaranteed, then out of tbolt, sub, explosion, rapid spin, and hyper beam, ya just take 3. I know it isn't amazing, but it's a valid use I thought worth mentioning ^_^
would be happy to see more videos like this, it is almost hard to recommend a topic because I would rather hear about something obscure that I don't already know most of the time. What I do know though, is that I would love to see more BKC on this channel as well
It is incredibly poetic how Blast Burn is practically synonymous with Charizard since the third generation. The children's favorite Pokemon combined with the children's favorite move. The mind-boggling power of Gmax Charizard's Solar Power and Sun Boosted Max Flare that came from Blast Burn is downright unimaginable.
This type of video is very entertaining as someone who doesnt know or participate in competitive Pokémon since i usually dont understand the whole logistics of any certain Pokémon’s moveset. I like this deep dive into just one move since you get to talk about a lot of different pokemon as well as supporting movesets as well!
They should seriously bring back Gen 1 Hyper Beam. There's all sorts of more broken moves in the games now that are more overplayed than HB ever was back in the day.
@@RoxasLov3r4Ev3r use a Pokemon that can learn Volt Switch and another U-Turn. Those are the most important moves when it comes to momentum. By far. Otherwise you got your all-around beaters like Moonblast, Earthquake, etc. Rapid Spin and Knock Off are of upmost importance too. But the most broken move right now is Scald since it's a decently powerful water move and carries a stupidly high burn chance. And there's broken set up moves like Dragon Dance and Quiver Dance that's worth everything for sweepers. Priority moves can become crazy if there's enough setup (like getting a swords dance in). And outright stupid moves like Stealth Rock are already well covered here.
I wish they'd bring back the Gen 1 effect back, where it skips the recharge turn if it knocks out the target. I'm sure that would make mons actually use the move, instead of it seeing 0 use at all.
OH HELL NO! imagine adabtability porygon-z with old hyperbeam! the nerf was the right decision gen1 anyways is always a bad game when it comes to battles. everything is broken. we do not have hyperbeam today but we have other very strong moves still used like leaf storm draco meteor flareblitz high jump kick or outrage!
I think Explosion/Self Destruct can definitely argue they are more nerfed than Hyper Beam, so can slash/crabhammer/Razor Leaf, but there is no way Hyper Beam is even close to as nerfed as Amnesia or wrap/fire spin/whatever the other trapping move was. Both were better than Hyper Beam in Gen 1, and worse than Hyper Beam after Gen 1. That a nerf.
I would argue that wrap wasn't THAT powerful Gen 1, being too inconsistent to really match up to what Hyper Beam was bringing. It just *felt* terrible getting caught in it.
Hey there, rby main /top player here. It really depends on the tier your playing, but in general hyper beam is the best of the bunch. In ubers amnesia is better and in uu you can argue wrap is better due to all the users and agility + partial trapping being banned. However you don’t see much wrap at the high level in ou, and amnesia is also rare since the main user, slowbro is rarely seen and Snorlax needs to run other set like reflect/ rest. Hyper beam is used in every single rby tier, and in ou it is definitely the most dangerous move thanks to lax and ros mainly
@@gaba7438 Slash and crabhammer are still fine moves, they were just super charged in Gen 1. Razor Leaf is too weak to matter now. Explosion and self destruct took a long time to get the nerf, but once it got it became virtually useless, especially in singles, but there were times boosting with items helped them a bit at least. I can’t imagine Amnesia has been seen in a high end competitive match since Gen 2, and I’d be very surprised if wrap was (fire spin and whirlpool maybe have been, they at least get STAB)
@@TheSniperLegacy That’s fair, and I respect your experience with it. But I also think you are looking at it as what did happen, instead of what WOULD have happened. Them being nerfed implies we should be looking at them when not nerfed. And if you give unnerfed trapping moves to faster Pokémon with Agilty/speed boosting moves than Gen 1 Nite, that’s a menace. I’m sure there has been a tinted lens user or with a trapping move before, BP a boost of speed to him and the fights over. One Coil from a snake Pokémon and the fight is over. One hone claws and the fight is over. Amnesia unnerfed would go all the Pokémon that got Nasty Plot, and much more, yeah sure, Slowbro isn’t great, but look how good Eevee was with growth, Umbreon with Amnesia is unkillable and can hurt you badly, Sylveon becomes a murder machine. Tons and tons of examples of what these moves would do to Pokémon Gen 2-8 if unnerfed
You guys remind me what I loved about Competitive Battling. Been playing since RBY and I'm so happy I got back into these games with Sword and Brilliant Diamond.
I enjoyed this. This would be a nice change of pace if we would get videos like this once a month. Maybe for the next move we talk about the BoltBeam combination and how only the Magnemite family resists it?
Also Heat Rotom, Frost Rotom and Arctozolt naturally resist Electric and Ice. Another thing FSG can cover can be the best two type coverage, examples being Ground paired with Fairy and Flying as it hits all the types that resist them super effectively, also Ghost and Fighting. And how those types can theoretically affect the metagame (Marshadow for example, and Pokemon that run Flying/Ground coverage or Fairy STAB/HP Ground).
i remember watching some of the first "how good were they actually" videos when they came out years ago and being worried whats gonna happen when you start running out of pokemon but i'm glad you're still making content
As great as RBY Hyper Beam was, I do still think RBY Blizzard was nerfed more over the course of multiple generations. Both moves didn’t like the introduction of Steel-Types, but as severe as the removal of Hyper Beam’s no-recharge-turn was, Blizzard is a move that’s only ever gotten worse. Even Hyper Beam can be used on special attackers now as a side-grade buff. Edit: For some actual stats, we’re talking about a move that had its base power lowered by 10 (20 in Legends: Arceus), it’s accuracy lowered by anywhere from 20 to 40 percentage points outside of hail (historically the worst weather), its freeze chance nerfed to 10% in international RBY, and this is all without mentioning the nerf to Freeze status in general.
I agree. And Blizzard in the original Red and Green was pretty strong due to the 30% freeze rate. Plus, Ice Beam/Blizzard compared to their Fire and Electric counterparts have less PP. Ice Beam doesn't matter much, but Blizzard isn't used as often not just because of the accuracy but due to the low PP, while Thunder and Fire Blast sometimes see usage.
@@raiden8929 That comes at the cost of being an Ice-Type, though. Electric is a good offensive type, and Fire’s one of the best types in the game in my opinion.
The thing is how the moves are used outside of weather. Fire Blast has the same PP as Blizzard, but has more accuracy. Thunder has the same accuracy as Blizzard, but more PP. Both of those moves are more safe to use, while Blizzard has 8 PP and 70% accuracy.
I love how the Gen I sound of hyper beam got added to it in Gen VI and beyond. It was a nice touch! On the top of my head, hydro pump and psychic also have their respective Gen I sound effect 👌🏻
On a related note, Pursuit changing from a Special attack to a Physical attack in the transition to Gen 4 really helped most users of the move, but made the life of Houndoom specifically miserable, as it lost its entire niche as the strongest Pursuiter by a mile. I can’t think of a single instance of a Pokémon getting nerfed harder than Houndoom with this change (other than those who were especially affected by the move removals of Gen 8); it really took away what was special about Houndoom in those earlier Gens. This was more of a move rework which resulted in a crippling Houndoom nerf than a move nerf, though, so Houndoom should get a new signature move that is a special version of Pursuit to make up for it, especially since a special Pursuit would really stand out when all of the Pursuits are physical nowadays
It makes sense too: Houndoom has origins from hounds and Doberman Pinschers. Both are known for their excellent tracking abilities, so they would be able to give chase to and take down enemies on the run. To justify Houndooms Pursuit clone as a special move, it could have a connection to its unique poisonous fire and its underworld themes.
I wouldn’t say the nerf is THAT crippling. There’s not much of a disparity in its attacking stats for the move to suddenly be not worth it, and it got new tools as compensation (Nasty Plot, for example).
Nobody who played gen 1 forgets the moment when Lance used Hyper beam against you didn't even knew wtf hit you and then that weird sound and the screen flashing , it was so cool back then
Hyperbeam and its variants are really popular in gen 8 vgc. People often use them in dynamax forms. I would say they are more popular than ever in current format
I love this style! I don’t have many other ideas for stuff like this, but I would love to see more. Maybe something for abilities like Levitate or Intimidate, or more moves like Trick Room or Tailwind.
I absolutely love these videos about the history of moves, mechanics and general trivia in competitive pokemon. The one about the most broken pokemon is straight fire.
Ignore me if its been done already, but a history if trapping strategies would be neat, things like wrap, fire spin, arena trap, shadow tag, etc, anything that prevents a pokemon switching out.
Giga Impact has existed since Gen 4 as the Physical counterpart to Hyper Beam, but no one acknowldeges it because it has all the nerfs with none of the history behind it.
I like the new format, it's something different and helps give context to the main videos. If it hasn't been done, a video on entry hazards or boosting moves would be nice
Every time I see Slaking using Hyper Beam, I can’t help but think of Chuggaaconroy’s Emerald LP where it was the “NOSE LASER!!” of his Slaking named Teddy Lmao
I wholeheartedly agree, this move went through a gigantic nerf. But I feel like the nerf to explosion is debatably an even bigger nerf. With hyper beam, the reason it was nerfed was due to the change in it's mechanics. By making it's recharge not happen if a KO happens. But to me explosion was a direct nerf from being a borderline suicide one hit KO. To a suicide move that struggles to one shot mons it needed to kill Anywho, a great video from FSG. As usual
Alternative for Self Destruct/Explosion: It might not half your Defense for calculation, but gains an additional 15 base power for each layer of Spikes and Toxic Spikes on your side of the field. And a flat extra 15 base power if Stealth Rocks are up? Also, all entry hazards are removed from your side of the field. Make it an alternative to Rapid Spin and Defog? Edit 9/9/22 Even if the moves don't cause damage, they still clear the hazards. Or just treat them like Rapid Spin against Ghosts. Which would be more balanced? Give those entry hazard pissing matchers a reason to knock that crap off!
@@stetsonherrick8090 I 100% agree, explosion being an anti entry hazard could be a good way of buffing it. But I still think even then it will never be the same as it used to be. The whole purpose of it was that it was by far by far the strongest move in the game. the fact that moves and dynamax moves are only 70/80 less bsp when SD and explosion literally kill yourself is a little odd. But yeah anti hazard would be a real cool addition and make it rewarding for intelligent play
Absolutely _love_ these videos about the history of influential moves over the generations of Pokemon, thanks for another fascinating look back on a move we all love so much!
First we got the most broken mons of all time, then an incredible heracross remake, and now this? FSG is popping off these few weeks! Keep up with this amazing new content, it's really great
i mean tbh hazards are always a welcome sight in singles due to switching, but the addition of heavy-duty boots being a "check" to them was needed since dealing with hazards was always an issue (being damaged by spikes or stealth rocks, poisoned from toxic spikes or getting slowed down via sticky web)
I want the old mechanic back. I think it is much more fun. And with modern boosting items (choice specs -> no switching between something and then hyper beam) it seams balanced enough to me
It's worth mentioning that, for the same reason as with Z crystals, hyper beam and its variants are incredibly valuable in gen 8 VGC for boosted dynamax moves. Charizard especially uses Blast Burn regularly for the extra power.
This as well
Blastoise defeated Charizard with his Max Hydro Cannon. It was so cool!
Very true there
PZ was very popular in series 6 with hyper beam dmax as well along with Gmax Venu with frenzy plant. Surprised it didn’t get a mention whatsoever

@@rekxar6314 dark void was cool imo, legedary pokemon are supposed to be OP lol
Having No Guard made Hyper Beam not fail when you needed it most. Also having STAB Hurricane with no Accuracy flub ups was great as well.
Mega Pidgeot will always be my go to mega in OU. Hyper Beam was my last resort move.
also, while not an "official" metagame, hyper beam and co. are pretty important in 1v1s. When all you need to do is defeat a single pokemon, then then recoil becomes a non-factor if the increased power allows for a quick kill.
In Battle Tree it is great with Hyper Beam

I feel old whenever he explains how moves used to work pre-split as if I'm confused about it.

Held items didn't exist in gen 1, so the item point for Geomancy is moot
There's also Explosion and Self-Destruct which got their power effectively halved.
Amnesia is not a nerf, more like victim of game mechanic change tho.
I didn’t know sleep talked rests worked that way. That’s interesting.

Tier level doesn't matter. Like, about half the Pokemon in the Gen 5 OU tier sucked in it.
Items are arguably broken so much so that it warrants a move that can remove and deal damage having pitiful damage didn’t justify running it but having the option to deal basic damage after it did it’s job justified it
Moves that have only one function and then taking up an entire move slot is generally bad
The exception to this is fake out
There’s also moves like reflect, light screen and trick room

You want to swap between: Pokémon that don’t care, such as Gengar, Rhydon, Cloyster, Slowbro, Pokémon that have recovery, such as Chansey, Slowbro, etc., and Pokémon that threaten it on a miss, such as ice move users and Rhydon.
If all the opponent gets out of Dragonite is the free chip from Wrap, that’s a victory. You just have to know the damage calc ranges for Drag’s Hyper Beam to make sure it can’t kill anything.

There’s an easy way to fix Hyper Beam and its variants: follow what _Legends: Arceus_ did and have them lower Speed.
Have them cause you to lose 1 or 2 points in Speed after each use. Then suddenly Trick Room becomes a much more viable strategy.
That would be interesting to see.
The thing is, in Legends arceus it sort of has the same effect as in other games, since speed affects turn order, which can cause the opponent to be able to attack you twice in a row (although it might still be good for naturally fast mons that would still outspeed after the stat drop)

Both forms of Kyurem could go crazy

gen 8 vgc "hyper beams" actually have a place on the meta currently because of max moves, charizard's blast burn being the most used one but also roar of time dialga, frenzy plant venusaur, hydro cannon life orb blastoise but also primarina and inteleon (earlier), hyper beam kyogre and some porygon-z in series 6, giga impact regigigas and probably some other im missing
Not just that, but Hyper Beam and Hyper Beam variants are also commonly used in 1v1, since the recharge turn doesn’t matter if you can just OHKO the opponent, especially if it was boosted by an -ate ability.
For Regieleki Hyper Beam is also (aside from ancient power) the only non-electric type special move that it can realistically use, which is why it sometimes runs it
Rock Wrecker Rhyperior in early series
Big Yellow makes an excellent compromise for hyper beam, and keep the no recharge (when you get a KO) as a move mechanic. would make it better but not busted

Tauros having an amazing STAB move in gen 1.
Gen 2: no
Gen 4: I've come back for the third round.
I enjoy these move videos so I hope you guys put out more! Explosion and self-destruct would be another great topic as others have pointed out in the comments already.
I'd say there's an argument for self-destruct/explosion being the most nerfed move of all, discounting hyper Beam's overpoweredness in gen 1
Which is ironic, considering selfdestruct and explosion actually had lower base power in gen 1
@@Oscarus4250 I forgor that was a thing 💀
@@Oscarus4250
Don’t forget Gen 1 let you explode against a substitute and still live.
Blizzard is also pretty nerfed. It was one a move to run; now only two Pokémon run it.
Love these kinds of videos exploring different aspects of competitive outside of individual Pokémon!
Loving the broader spread of content you've been putting out. You guys are super talented and it feel like it's being put to great use. Well done!
I've watched your videos for a while but I genuinely think this is the first time I've ever seen Hyper Beam's animation in Pokemon Battle Revolution. Guess that shows how little it's seriously used in competitive (post gen 1of course)
Fitting, it wasn't nerfed in Gen II, it was nerfed in Stadium.
Pixilate and similar abilities are hilarious with it also Adaptability PORYGON Z is just death
This is why I would LOVE for Scarlet/Violet to give us an item that forgoes the recharge turn, working like Power Herb.
honestly power should just do that
The Pokémon’s I see abusing this though are Moxie Pokémon
Really cool vid! Though on gen-8, there is one minor exemption in Regieleki, which genuinely does use hyper beam on a decent percentage of sets :)
That's mostly because is has no other real options.
Can you give me some examples? :) I'm super new to competitive Pokémon and don't know much about it but I think it's interesting!
@@thepaintingbanjo8894 thanks so much!! :DDDD It was very helpful!
I'm happy to see that one of my favorite youtubers is realizing new content, im really looking forward to seeing more of this 🥰🥰🥰
Loved this episode! Super fun to finally branch over from pokemon to moves, and eventually items and abilities!
This was really refreshing to watch. Thanks bro. 🙏
I wish they'd bring back the Gen 1 effect back, where it skips the recharge turn if it knocks out the target. I'm sure that would make mons actually use the move, instead of it seeing 0 use at all.
I wish they made Amnesia function like gen 3 Tail glow and Amnesia in 1 turn!
Maybe if the Ability Vital Spirit, which prevents sleep, had the charge skip effect, it would be a much better ability
@@TheZenhalilboy that’s a good idea
OH HELL NO! imagine adabtability porygon-z with old hyperbeam! the nerf was the right decision gen1 anyways is always a bad game when it comes to battles. everything is broken. we do not have hyperbeam today but we have other very strong moves still used like leaf storm draco meteor flareblitz high jump kick or outrage!
@@jointser1008 it was less a nerf and more a bug fix, either way you’re right though it would be hella broken
Absolutely loved this style of video. 100 percent down for seeing more!!
I'd say most of those moves you mentionned are definitely usable and sometimes even great, while having hyper beam is almost always bad.
@@gaba7438
Slash and crabhammer are still fine moves, they were just super charged in Gen 1.
@@TheSniperLegacy
That’s fair, and I respect your experience with it.
It may have lost the hype but at least it’s still a beam.
It's a R (Ray) Beam
Yo going over moves and their history is such an elite four level move! Keep it up!
I enjoyed this. This would be a nice change of pace if we would get videos like this once a month. Maybe for the next move we talk about the BoltBeam combination and how only the Magnemite family resists it?
Lanturn exists as well with volt absorb.
*Shedinja just out here not giving a damn*
i remember watching some of the first "how good were they actually" videos when they came out years ago and being worried whats gonna happen when you start running out of pokemon but i'm glad you're still making content
Love this style of videos you’ve started doing! Competitive Pokémon history is awesome!
Just randomly stumbled on this video in recommended and it’s very well made and really interesting! Really good job! :)
But blizzard is still a somewhat OK move on some Ice types. It's the thunder or fire blast for ice types
@@raiden8929 That comes at the cost of being an Ice-Type, though. Electric is a good offensive type, and Fire’s one of the best types in the game in my opinion.
@@bdt2002gaming your putting way too much time into your point, I can't be arsed. Mate it's a move in a pokemon game.
The thing is how the moves are used outside of weather. Fire Blast has the same PP as Blizzard, but has more accuracy. Thunder has the same accuracy as Blizzard, but more PP. Both of those moves are more safe to use, while Blizzard has 8 PP and 70% accuracy.
Gotta say I am really diggin these new Sunday lineups! Learning about stuff other than mons is great. Thank you for such quality videos 👍
I love the history videos. You should do these more.
Keep this style up, it’s great and you sound happier doing it!
I love how the Gen I sound of hyper beam got added to it in Gen VI and beyond. It was a nice touch!
On the top of my head, hydro pump and psychic also have their respective Gen I sound effect 👌🏻
psybeam, too
I love Psychic's gen2 sound file.
Ayo, congrats on nearly 400K subs. Y'all some champions yourselves, for real!
I think you inverted the part about pursuit changing from special to physical instead of the opposite
@@CDELTA_ Thanks for pointing that out! Fixed
Nobody who played gen 1 forgets the moment when Lance used Hyper beam against you didn't even knew wtf hit you
and then that weird sound and the screen flashing , it was so cool back then
history of specific moves is a really cool idea and I think you should make more
I don’t halve epilepsy, but I respect that you put in the warning 🖤
Hyperbeam and its variants are really popular in gen 8 vgc. People often use them in dynamax forms. I would say they are more popular than ever in current format
Absolutely loving this type of content! Especially the top 5 most broken pokemon which i have watched more than once :D
The sound effect of hyper beam from gen 1 will be one of my favorites, even outside of the pokemon series.
I love this style! I don’t have many other ideas for stuff like this, but I would love to see more. Maybe something for abilities like Levitate or Intimidate, or more moves like Trick Room or Tailwind.
I love this "move analysis" I think Explosion was also a candidate to more nerfed move, I hope to see more, not only moves but also maybe items
I absolutely love these videos about the history of moves, mechanics and general trivia in competitive pokemon. The one about the most broken pokemon is straight fire.
Porygon Z had a small part in the VGC meta a while ago with Dynamax adaptability Hyper beams
Please keep videos like these coming, I found this both incredibly entertaining and educating
Ignore me if its been done already, but a history if trapping strategies would be neat, things like wrap, fire spin, arena trap, shadow tag, etc, anything that prevents a pokemon switching out.
I really like these side videos. It's cool to explore mechanics and other things that play a part in battles. I'm all for more of them.
It's a gross disappointment we got no reference but the Slaking video does call it out.
I see you are a man of culture, Souvlaki96.
@@justinnzamora5366 Thank you. I see you are too! :)
I had no idea about the Gen 1 hyper beam mechanic 🤯 Great video, I’d love to see more about specific moves or even move combos over the generations!
I feel Hyper Beam Mega Pidgeot deserved a mention, being used in BirdSpam to break through Rotom-W and Zapdos for Talonflame and co to break havock.
Yeah, since its decent powered STABs were Uproar and Hyper Beam, which both aren't reliable for regular competitive battle.
I love vids like this, the stealth rock vid, etc. It's getting into the weeds on something you might not think of. Keep it up!
To a suicide move that struggles to one shot mons it needed to kill
Anywho, a great video from FSG. As usual
Alternative for Self Destruct/Explosion:
It might not half your Defense for calculation, but gains an additional 15 base power for each layer of Spikes and Toxic Spikes on your side of the field.
Worst Hyper Beam animation is Gen 3.
Dude, I love this documentary-ish style for Pokemon. Do more videos like this, please!
Woa, no mention of Gmax Blastoise with Hydro Cannon? Thats honestly more badass than charizard blast burn lmao
Absolutely love this new style of videos, love having them alongside the current content
If that mechanic still existed Roar of Time Dialga would have created AG before Wobuffet megaRay and Zacian did xD
First we got the most broken mons of all time, then an incredible heracross remake, and now this? FSG is popping off these few weeks! Keep up with this amazing new content, it's really great
I'd love a video about how entry hazards have evolved over the generations, I think that's a fascinating topic
i mean tbh hazards are always a welcome sight in singles due to switching, but the addition of heavy-duty boots being a "check" to them was needed since dealing with hazards was always an issue (being damaged by spikes or stealth rocks, poisoned from toxic spikes or getting slowed down via sticky web)
I realy love these one-off videos! Very interesting topics, and they really spice up the channel. Love your work, FSG!
I want the old mechanic back. I think it is much more fun.
And with modern boosting items (choice specs -> no switching between something and then hyper beam) it seams balanced enough to me
I love these videos about other aspects of competitive pokemon, and I would definitely like to see more!
I'd love to see a history of the self-destructing moves!
I like the idea of move-specific videos. Good switch-up from the usual video, so I'm looking forward to more
