Before Alicia Keys, there's Patrice Rushen. I'm so blessed to have grown up in this era of music.
Yes🙌🏾🙌🏾
Omg me too! ❤
Her song " sending forget me nots " is still on my playlist today! She is one of the most underrated musicians EVER!!
Alicia Keyes can’t touch Patrice . That’s my era and I’m not much of music since then it can come just a few artist of music I’m of the Now.
This was the Prince of the 80’s -90’s she was so so good at being a musician and singer and writer too she was phenomenal
Her career never ended.
This woman is always somewhere playing/singing music or teaching the theory of it. Respect always✊🏾
Facts 🙌🏾
Exactly! Hell, I'll be bold enough to say, Patrice Rushen and her music became just as big, influential throughout the 90s and early 00s. I mean, you had alot of 90s Hip Hop artists, R&B groups, even some Techno music producers sampling alot of her earlier body of work. Case and point Will Smith, Mary J. Blige, George Micheal, Kirk Franklin and others borrowed from Patrice for some of their hit songs. The woman is a legend in her own right.
@@MrJuly1990ish Definitely 🙌🏾
@@MrJuly1990ishand remember forget me nots song was featured on the big screen for Tom hanks movie hit called BIG ❤ She left a huge legacy after she stepped outta recording and went behind the scenes. Smart move. That pop fame wasn't her thing anyway. She had plenty integrity and professionalism
She did a lot of composing behind the scenes!
Those in charge of the music industry, rarely use the words, musical genius, when talking about female artist. Patrice is definitely a musical genius!
Definitely!
Patrice Rushen is a trailblazer for music artists everywhere. I grew up loving her music. I wish her the best in life.
Definitely agree! Thanks for watching 🙌🏾
Word!
Say that!♥
Loved her Music,A long with Minnie n Phyllis
Patrice was the real deal!
A time when artist really worked on and loved their craft.
She's still gorgeous.
Thank you so much for posting.
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for watching!
@@charlesrichter3854 😆 🤣 😂 For sure.
Happy Holidays!
You know what I mean.
You must be a Virgo. 😆
Patrice is an INCREDIBLE keyboardist, composer, arranger, and musical director!!! Her album "Before the Dawn" is an underrated and underappreciated album and one of my favorites of all her recordings!
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
I agree👍
At some point when she and Prince were both still in their youth, they were brought to the Berklee College of Music as child prodigies. The college wanted to study them and their talent in a special program. That is where Patrice first met Prince. They were both still kids then.
As a young man in the early 1980's, I had a huge crush on Mrs. Rushen, she was and still is a beautiful, hugely talented and classy woman. Thanks for the excellent profile, it brings back fun memories 😊!
I think she's single, go drop her a DM lol & Thanks for watching!
Loved this. I had the honor to meet Reggie Williams who was responsible for this woman's music career as her high school band and music director and one of her music writers and producers of her career and I knew her music class and hs band mate and music partner and producer ndugo Chancellor the renowned jazz drummer. They were clients of my barbershop i worked at. Thats where I found out they were involved in her life and career❤. I also had some clients who were her students at USC. plus I been a fan since a kid from the pizazz album to the mid 80s. She's a female prince without the fame. Genius.
Classy indeed and obviously treated as such.
We need more soft voiced, soprano singers like her. They've been missing in pop music over the last few decades. "Forget Me Nots" was my jam.
Reggie Andrews from Locke High @@kevinmorgan263
I have ALL of her music. This little woman is extremely musically inclined and she is beautiful. She knows her stuff!! Gooood Loooord!!
Yes she definitely is! 💯🙌🏾
And, don’t forget Remind Me! That’s one of her best as well! Love her!!! 🥰
💯💯💯
Patrice Rushen was a musical genius and doesn’t get enough recognition for her music. Remind Me is still one of my favorite songs today.
💯💯
Remind Me is one of the most sampled songs in her collection. Mack 10, Skee Lo, R. Kelly & Public Announcement, Junior Mafia, Faith Evans, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Heavy D & The Boyz, Lord Finesse, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Brotha Lynch Hung, Kut Klose and many others.
I've loved Patrice's music since I was 11! I'm fifty-something now and she's still my queen!👑
👑👑
How could you forget her score for the cult classic - Sandra Bernhard's "Without You I'm Nothing"? She wrote all the music and every note of it is musical tribute/parody GOLD. Her orchestrations and arrangements are PHENOMENAL. It is a must see.
I'ma 90's baby 🍼 but I'm a Old Soul 🕊️ and proud.
My mother put me on the 80's music, my Father put me on Hip-Hop. But my mother put me on more Old School music and Patrice Rushen was getting played in the car specifically "Forget me nots".
I love "Forget me nots" so Dope 🔥🔥
She's definitely a Underrated Artist and she's so beautiful 😍 🥰
We do too! She's so Talented 💯
Ahead of her time also amazing artist.
Love Ms. Patrice Rushen. She is brilliant so talented. So under-rated. Broke barriers, Performer, Writer, Musical Director. Give her flowers. Yes, you are a legend 👏 🙌 ❤️
Definitely is 🙌🏾💯
She was so full of talent. Grew up in this era. Great music!!
Yes indeed 🙌🏾💯
I only know her for her Jazz playing, I don't really like pop. When people ask me who are the great Keyboard players of the 70s (which in my opinion are the best keyboardist ever) I say Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Jan Hammer and of course Patrice Rushen. Her beautiful solo on Jean-Luc Ponty's track "Renaissance" is my favorite piano solo on record (and I listen to allot of Jazz Pianists). I really love the 1988 concert of the Santana & Wayne Shorter band. There was a point were Patrice and Carlos were soloing against each other, and although Santana was good, Patrice ran rings around his playing. It was really edgy and it blew my mind. I wish she was my keyboard player in my fusion band. Just love that little lady.
Oh wow thanks for sharing🙌🏾
I have always loved Patrice Rushen
🙌🏾🙌🏾
Patrice's a very legendary and gifted performer. Continous blessings to her always!!❤❤❤
❤️❤️❤️
This is cool. I was working in a "Rekka-Stow" when her her albums on Prestige came out and I had the opportunity to listen to all of them. She was a little female Herbie Hancock. Her nickname was "Baby Fingers". I followed her onto and into the albums on Elektra, where I (and most everyone) learned to respect her singing. She made great music. I lost track of her recorded music after the Elektra work. Did not even sample the Arista stuff. In 1997 or so, I found myself enjoying a martini in a hotel lobby near The Viper Room in Hollywood, CA. There she was, with a jazz trio, playing piano in the lobby. It was a real treat to get that close to her and see her perform. Now I've gotta go find those albums with E. Watts, N. Chandler and A. Johnston (all "Heavies"). Thanks!!
That's Dope, Thanks for sharing this and Thanks for watching 💯
Woooooow not “wreckka stow” (“record store” -- “Under The Cherry Moon”) I dunno why I feel like I’m the only person that knows that 😂🥰
Looks like somebody out there knows where to get a Sam Cooke record, right? Smile on MY face. I lobbed that one out there and You caught it! That's a game winner! @@yuphereiam4410

Facts 💯
Thank you for sharing this story! It's great to hear how Patrice Rushen has pivoted to use her talents in many ways! I remember seeing her in concert in Minneapolis in 1982! It was a great performance! I'll keep my eyes and ears open for what she does on the future's music horizon! 😃👏🏾💕👩🏽🎤🎶🎹🎤
You're welcome🙌🏾
Patrice is the real deal. She started out as a jazz player and amazingly, played at the Monterey Jazz Festival when she was only 17. She was a prodigy, and rubbed shoulders with giants in the ‘70s. I have many jazz albums she played on, and seeing her name in the credits of a used jazz album results in an automatic buy. She moved into R & B as the ‘70s went on and of course had big hits in the ‘80s like “Forget Me Nots.” She’s still out there playing now, and she’s still beautiful, because the kind of beauty she has doesn’t fade with time. It’s deep beauty. Soul beauty.
Facts 💯💯
My dad had the honor of choosing her to play at the NAMM show the year Forget Me Not dropped. He was so impressed with her talent.
Oh Wow! Thanks for sharing 🙌🏾
@@URBANTVOndemand it was either when he was at Yamaha or Fender/Rogers/Rhodes. I'm not sure. But he was really impressed with her. Thank you for doing such a good job with this.
A tremendously talented artist. Just awesome. She should be a household name. This was a great documentary! Documentaries like this one can be so beneficial to introducing artists to a new audience. Very important. Great job!
Thank you 🙏🏽
The definition of a true musical artist she doesn’t get enough credit for her contribution to music
💯💯
The most soothing voice ever...
For sure 💯💯
Yes Yes Yes
Pure talent..pure beauty..pure joy
She pretty much set the tone to the type of woman I was attracted to as a teenager
Oddly I didn't know that she worked with Prince
I always thought of her as the female version of Prince musically
Definitely not surprised to hear that Prince was attracted to her
Grew up with her in Athens park. She played the flute at Henry Clay. We all were quite aware of musical talent. She lived 3 blocks away from me. She did not grow up in watts. She lived with her parents in a beautiful home worth hundreds of thousands back in 1970. My wife Bonnie and I attended Henry Clay Junior High with her 1968 through 1971.
Thanks for bringing this wonderful artist to our attention again. I've often listening to my favorite songs of hers.
You're welcome and thanks for watching!
She’s really amazing and so talented.
Definitely is 🙌🏾💯
I am so happy her music career took her to new heights after the albums. I always enjoyed her music ever since I first heard “Haven’t you heard?” I even had my hair braided and beaded like hers. She was in inspiration in so many ways. This was a great documentary and yes, I was rooting for a relationship between her and Prince musical and romantic lol!
