The scythe can cut grass and wheat which can then be bundled, stacked or baled into hay or straw...hence "hay maker".
Literal hay maker 😂
Thank you! I was like “da scythe makes da hayyy”
I was surprised Purp didn't get the pun
Absolutely correct, and I totally missed that interpretation
@@TheMagicHistorian The term haymaker became applied to boxing in the early 1900s for a type of punch which resembled the wide swinging stroke of a scythe.
Power Leap, not Power Creep
I gotta say, while I’m looking forward to Bloomburrow I’m getting really fucking tired of needing to read a novel every time my opponent or I play a card.
As a Yu-Gi-Oh player, you might not want to see our cards.
Maybe work on your memory? This has always been a game of reading, mathematics and strategy. Obviously some effects feel a little convoluted but it's TBE in a 30 year old game. How else does it stay fresh? Reskins?
Lol @@wesjaguar
Used to be that MTG was the way to have a cool off period between high-reading-intensity rounds of yugioh. Now Yugioh sometimes feels like the easier one to understand.
@@wesjaguarno it hasn’t. Go look at the early cards. Everything had a sentence. A really spicy card had 2, but often not even that.
Let’s look at the 2 cards they used to advertise the game
Hurloon Minotaur: zero text, just flavor
Serra Angel: flying, does not tap when attacking (later shortened to flying, vigilance)
Starting to think they are making new shit so insane so we stop worrying about the no-print list.
I have similar thoughts, and I hate it, because it's ruining Legacy. I'm really thinking about moving to Premodern.
You kidding me? These cards are dogshit.
all edh cards
these cards arent even that good man 😭
Premodern, cube and pauper are all I play now with the very very little magic I still play. Even warhammer went to shit. It's so bad battletech has made a huge comeback both as a tabletop and rpg cause everyone is sick of wizards/ Hasbro and games workshop
Baylen, "Great day for fishing, ain't it?"
18:35, what I particularly love about the artwork of Vren, is all the little rats' paws reaching up from under the timber, representing the tokens created from your opponent's dead creatures.
The Storm Hawk isn’t Kolaghan herself, but the dragons in her brood resemble her with the four wings and lightning.
Unfortunately, toxrill is a HORROR SLUG, not a snail.
You are right, also BOOOOOOOO
I would substitute a "G" with a "T", after seeing how obnoxious it is
That's what it wants you to think. My Conspiracy says it's actually a Snail.
I have no interest in reading a novel on these new magic cards and being required to interpret multiple X values and triggers. It’s just not fun.
So, if you exile 5 cards with Dragonhawk, you simply do 10 damage to each opponent which results in 30 damage "just because". Neat.
Stay crunchy.
The classes returning like they have is a bit strange with the "Talents" added to them, but if you've noticed most of the creatures have all followed the Warrior, Bard, Wizard, Cleric, Rogue and such, so you could slot in some Baulder's Gate stuff and get some cross synergies.
The amount of gas this set threw on my Chatterfang deck is pretty tight
don't worry, there will be another in between set a week after bloomburrow with even stronger stuff
I wish people had the gall to boycott. Though I admit, there is something to be said about the flip side of power creep; wizards cant make cards that are just different versions of other cards, because then why use them other than competitive play for legality, and why buy them if they are basically what you already have?
So they are gonna run out of ideas. Unless they break the pie more.
Which xards break the color pie? I'm just ignorant
@@marcoottina654 I can't say off rip but green as a color has mostly broken the pie, it can do almost anything other colors can do on the minor side.
I'm not the most savy myself since I've stepped away from the game so no worries, I just keep up with the news from my favorite mtg tubers
Can't boycott something you're already not buying. And incidentally, you *can* sell people the same things they already own, Yugioh has been doing this for about 10 years and has had little problem - most archetypes aren't powercrept, only their biannual forced tier 0 decks really are. Pokemon sort of does it too, each rotation features a lot of the same effects, swapped around different familiar pokemon.
Baelin the Haymaker is called haymaker because he is using a scythe which is usually used to cut hay
That makes perfect sense, good catch
A theory that might explain the Starfall Invocation art. Revealed on the same day was a minor calamity beast called a Driftgloom Coyote, which is characterized as a starving fog. In the Bloomburrow Planeswalker guide it describes calamities as falling into one of two categories, the named major calamities which are unique and more powerful, and minor calamities which are weaker and more common. I could be wrong but at the very least it makes sense narratively that it's depicting a beam of moonlight burning through a pack of Driftgloom coyotes
So... One and rakdos, discard a card and then - Emrakul.... or Ugin Spirit Dragon... Omniscience? or any other busted most ridiculous card in the library of magic? Why play anything other then that weasel as commander and the unbelievable game ending pantheon of cards in colourless red or black...? There's almost no point playing anymore it's getting crazy the words they'll put on this cardboard to get a reaction.
It’ll be banned, no question. What a stupid card to print.
@@icarus-wings no question. It’s the same brainless hype they pump into universes beyond and secret lair. Anyone would think they were going out of business.
Or that they were so confident about their survival they didn’t care what shit they put out as long as they were creating a buzz.
How long will I be a fly buzzing around Hasbro faeces… sigh.
Because that card isn't good. Cheating out a big spell you have to setup to actually get isn't very good. It is just a fun flashy card that you'll be able to do fun things if a bunch of stars Align but ultimately it will just kind of be okay. This isn't even the best black red legend.
@icarus-wings you're insane if you think this is going to be banned
At least it's not cascade
Well, this dragon bird turns all non-casted (land) cards into .. "shock(land)s"?
Well, thats a ... _shocking_ power
A cool set in a design vacuum, but really all the creature types are either completely new or just very underrepresented in pst sets, so how will these cards affect formats? Last time I checked no one was asking for more otters and mice and bats.
Rabbit tribal isn't a thing afaik, but cute animal tribal now is.
If it looks like a Kolaghan,
If it flaps like a Kolaghan,
If it clucks like a Kolaghan,
It's probably Kolaghan.
If it was literally Kolaghan, I would have called it "Calamity of Storm's Fury" as a callback to the original card as well as obscuring it with a Bloomburrow mythologue.
Except the story moments that suggest it's just one of the brood.
The intro tells us that a "Storm" happened and a single beast was brought in. The storm either being a dragonstorm or just the dragon itself.
Since it's most likely a dragonstorm, the most likely option is that a Tarkir dragonstorm was birthing new Dragons, but it got too intense and broke open a temporary omenpath to Bloomburrow, and one of the newly born Kolaghan brood fell through and was unable to go back.
I also think it would have done much better in the fight against Maha if it was actual Kolaghan, and probably wouldn't have run from a single attack from Ral.
It’s part of Kolaghan’s brood at least.
Easily Wick, but Toxrill is a slug not a snail, which is probably a good thing
Well, there's a lot to love in this set, mainly the art and story. About the power creep.. it kinda belongs in a padded room with a straitjacket, considering how insane it is.
Valley Floodcaller might be stronger than it looks. As far as I understand, it allows you to cast any noncreature spell at flash speed, and untap your creatures. So.. if an enemy decides to attack you during their turn, you could cast a giant growth, give a creature +3/+3 and add an extra +1/+1 to all birds, frogs, otters and rats and untap all of them so you can block with them. Isn't that kinda crazy? Or is it just me.
Turning a bird into a dragon is interesting. It seems they’ve made the small things big in bloom burrow land. I wonder if this concept would help segothian creatures to exist in the same way.
This is apparently a dragon turned into a bird
It's a dragon turned birn
Although I don't think they really succeeded - the "big" animals in this set just look like normal sized animals, and the anthropomorphic animals when not depicted in context also look about the same size. Segovia artwork works because they recreate in paint the lens effects that happen when you photograph miniatures as if they're human scale.
I just can’t with this set.
Black magic has indeed become purple in color.
Incorrect sir in that artwork with the night owl she is a 3/1.
Also why are the squirrels black aligned.
Because of chitterfangs, i guess
Because they do necromancy stuff
@bencroft6626 squirrels are known to collect nuts and forget where they hid them. Forage makes sense for them, but i dont understand how they relate to necromancy. I asked my sibling who has only played a tiny bit and she said red green then immediately changed her mind to green white. Every squirrel token depicts them as cute or dopey.
Also every squirrel commander before that was rhys the redeemed. Also weasel makes more sense as the warlock class.
As an aside, the entirety of bloomburrow gives me that nostalgic feeling of the 80s animated movies like An American tail, secret of NIMH and Fern Gully.
@marcoottina654 yeah that makes the most sense. Still disappointed though.
@@marcoottina654 "I'm sorry, but you named Chitterfang with Pithing Needle, not Chatterfang."
Would be a reply of all time.
EDH Deck Idea. Commander Cruelclaw, 98 lands and x1 worldfire for your deck, Obash companion.
"Fate's Tempest" Fate Reforged. Kolaghan is technically a 'tempest' via a reforged 'fate'
Make hay while the sun is shining!
Wotc used AI to write Bloomburrow's story.
Haymaker could be reference towards his scythe, reaping the grass to make hay.
And here we were hoping for a fun animal set. Then WotC came along "hold my box" and dropped the craziness with counters and tokens. Well, they need to force rotation to sell new products but that level is just weird.
With all the MTG has lost its mind videos lately, I'm pretty sure there's nothing left to lose at this point.
I love doing weird things and combos in my decks! Generally doesnt win but I love seeing peoples faces when I pull it off. I am so glad they made a Grixis rat Commander!! I cannot wait!!
Some powercreep is nice, it makes sure that there are always some new cards that are strong enough to be excited about, cards that might unlock interesting new strategies or add a fun edge to an existing one. The problem MTG is starting to have is that there's so much powercreep that powerful new cards no longer feel particularly exciting, because there's probably a bunch more powerful cards in the same set, and if not, there will be next set. In 2014/15, I spent 9 months just trying to make a Necropolis Regent deck work as well as I could, and that was great. If Necropolis Regent was a new card today, firstly it wouldn't be powerful enough to make me want to think about it, and more importantly, I wouldn't get to think about it for more than a couple of months before something even more powerful was released that did the same thing and drew cards.
For the Common Good looks like it was made with Fanatic of Rhonas in mind.
think haymaker is a pun, because you make hay by swinging the scythe across the field. which I think maybe where the name for the punch came from as well...
Insane day indeed!
"Unfortunatly" Toxril is a slug (No house and it is a own creature type) and snails in grixis beside of changelings are very rare (1 in Lost caverns Ixalan), beside that interesting cards
Baylin is a play on words... he makes bales of hay...thus, he's Baylin' the hay! ;)
"Don't call me Splinter" ,... Lost it 😂
Print broken stuff. People rush in to buy. Meta explodes. Nerf. Print new broken stuff.... the cycle must not be broken.
Really nice to see class coming back :)
Couldn't part of Wick's text just be shortened to "amass Snail 1?"
The night owl kind of reminds me of the owl from Uri and the Blind Forest.
@21:50 +it is amazing to see you enjoy the quality of a magi cards' art!
Time seems to have made you quite disillusioned with MTG nowadays, glad to see you really happy for new stuff for once sir!!
(Been watching since starting MTG in january 2024)
This may be a dumb question, but here it is:
With Dragonhawk, would you deal damage based on the cards still in exile from previous attacks plus the the newly exiled cards? Or does it only care about the newly exiled cards?
It's not a dumb question, it only cares about the cards exiled that turn
a poly rapter mill in a gruul deck will go crazy with this
I’M SO EXCITED FOR A BLOOM-BOROUGH BYERD DECK
Comparing Overprotect with other similar effects in green, especially for EDH and not limited play.
We agree Heroic Intervention and Smuggler's Surprise are good cards. However how good is single target?
Likely in green (/green base), your creatures can gain trample through other means and thus its minimal added value, expect in an Aragorn, the Uniter deck.
I like how cheap it is to hold up Tamiyo's Safekeeping and Tayvar's Stand. Where Gaea's Gift feels clunky and may have similar considerations to cut Gift as well as cutting Overprotect. At least you are left with a counter when you Gift when you choose to be reactive (Overprotect gives you nothing).
The other way of looking at this, playing your 4 or 5 drop close to curve as possible, you only need +1 mana to protect but instead need +2. So thats 5 vs 6 mana or 6 vs 7 mana if you anticipate your table being fearful of your creature that you deployed.
That cost difference does matter. I would trade “+3/+3” with ‘draw a card’ but that’s cracked at 2 mana (to protect and to cantrip)
[Maybe I’m missing the use case of Overprotect. Ivy decks probably find this too expensive?]
For the common good, you can pay 2 so 3 total and copy a land token which is something we are getting. Thus ramping + getting the effect of the card sounds good to me!
I'm pretty sure the dragon from takir Copenhagen sided with the phyrexians and was completed in the artwork tarkir battle card
Terror of the peaks is still more terrifying, BUT…. Both in one deck seems good
I didn't even know there were snails in Magic until I tried to find out what Wick's snail tokens look like. 😂
All you simps paying money while MTGA gets it for free LOL
It seems slug and snail are different creature types. There seems to be more slugs than snails, so wick may struggle as a snail tribal commander for now.
Not if you tutor a Conspiracy.
overprotect sounds perfect for anzrag
Toxrill is a Slug. IIRC there's only one non-changeling Snail in MtG, Skullcap Snail.
There are probably more in MtG's multiverse, like the Dogsnail. Steamflogger Boss says Contraptions will return.
I'm gonna need that Dragon Chicken for my Commander deck......
I’m kinda excited for Wick, the Whorled Mind. Seems like a fun Grixis commander.
I thought Dragonlord Kolaghan got turned into a Phyrexian?
A old Facebook of mine that was hijacked last year is adding people but has a photo of a woman please block it.
Innkeeper's Talent would go great with poison counter decks.
Dragonhawk, Fate's Tempest.
Ima steal that name and title for a game
Really curious who the bird dragon ends up being
As a diabetic, I really appreciate you helping us folks with our DIABEETUS 😂
cute bunnies, magical raccoons & zippy squirrels ?? It just seems wrong
A scythe is a LITERAL hay maker 😂
"Cruelclaw" has to be one of the most BROKEN cards I have EVER SEEN!!!
Still less scary than Narset, Enlightened Master; Captain N'ghathrod; or Kaalia of the Vast.
@@CTimmerman 🤔.. Kaalia is up there...Them together though....SMH
Scyths are used for cutting long grass and making hay hence hay maker
Overprotect should have been GG. And it seems like a defensive aura of some sort, works for me!
For the common good with offspring was exactly what I was thinking. Also green blue token decks, the blue has ways to make non legendary tokens of creatures
Chatterfang will be very happy with For the Common Good
The guy that makes plauge rats is cool
I'm looking forward to baylen the haymaker and cruelclaw. With emiel the blessed and dockside, as long as your opponent has 4 or more artifacts and enchantments you can go infinite and just make baylen monsterous and through extra combat cards you can bulldoze the entire table
These cards are really good. I can't wait to get my preorder from my LGS. Thank you for the video Magic Historian.
For the common good will certainly be going in my simic Orvar deck
Bro, talent is there because Inkeeper’s Class sounds dumb, and not real.
For the common good works nicely in dragons and eldrazi 😅
Kaalia says hello
Looking forward to this set
I tried listening while so was organizing my collection. I was too distracted to recall whatever my favorite card from this video was. Sorry.
LOL scythes are used to make hay... and baylen = hay bale.
Helga looks good for my rainbow Omnath deck.
Why so much text?
I miss the old days where cards were simple and had very little text, like Lich and Chains of Mesistopheles.
Or cards that were sentient and self-aware, like floral spuzzem.
Baylen with a Lvl.3 Innkeeper's Talent, and a bunch of tokens.
As it would seem like you can just tap like 20+ tokens and give Baylen +15/+15 & Trample
With counter doubling. Baylen could be a beast.
Dragon hawk today and the red cantrip
Dragonhawk is bonkers
Baylen weapon is 🌶
My favorite card is none of the above. The power creep is getting too much.
it seems odd that for the common good is a rare.
Also, cards exiled with Dragonhawk deal 2 damage each turn as long as they're exiled. :)
Not, as "those cards" refer to the X you drew that resolution.
@@CTimmerman oh, you're right!
A loonie for a Canadian coin and new auger bob
So they can't give any other archetype/ colors any support 😢
Have a Yenna, Redtooth Reagent deck, For the Common Good is going into it, easy.
Maybe I'll make more copies of Anointed Procession. Or Miriari's Wake. Or Three Blind Mice...
love all the rats!
Just compare Serendib Efreet to Nadu.
Mtg by Hasbro is like Starwars by Disney
Dragonhawk can do 20 damage with haste
WotC some absolute loose bootyhole for making 1/1 black snails when they did 1/1 black slugs for Toxorill in VOW. Like support the tokens you already have instead of making functionally identical ones with different names ffs🙄
Two mana kill card, bye bye birds moving on next (hint this isn’t that great a card unless it sticks. Which it won’t. Since every color except blue has removal)
