I'm a little sad that the planeswalker I find by far the best looking, in a color combination that I like to play (RW) is a stand-in for 2 of the things I dislike heavily about modern magic: Planeswalkers and Mythic rarity. Teferi, or one of the many Jaces could have been a better example. While the planeswalkers in the first set they showed up in were okay, it didn't take them long to come up with completely broken versions. They utterly dominate every lower powered format and it took Wizards years to design some reasonable removal for it. I don't even want to start with the Mythic rarity issue, it reflects everything WotC corporate greed stands for and negatively affects the players by making necessary game pieces even more artificially scarce than they already were.
I think Elspeth would've been a better example. No one was really concerned about Ajani's rarity because it was the pre-release promo so there were a million copies floating around and you could get it for like $5.

I would like to point out that Fay Jones the Stasis isn’t just some person, she’s a renowned artist with works on display in many places in the Pacific Northwest.
Gitaxian probe is also a solid argument for 2011, just for how many formats it was played into. It makes your deck 56 cards and gives you a bunch of free info if it's safe to storm off.
I mean I stopped playing magic in 2019 for a reason. I haven't picked the game up again since. My only exposure to magic now is through Seth, just because I like Seth as an entertainer.
No one actually hated siege rhino though. It was literally honored as the best card in standard at the time and so many people made goodbye videos for it
i think it was one of the most beloved 'best cards' in history of standard. it was just an efficient "fair" card that didnt hose any archetype (no not even aggro, multiple aggro decks existed despite siege rhino)
For 1998 it was Tolarian Academy. There was all kinds of broken stuff going on, but with Academy you just knew what the rest of the game looked like. Until Academy was hit, games were just down to whos gets their academy first so you could "stroke myself until I go off and stroke you until I win." After it was banned, I got 8 of them for about $6, 4 of which became my first 4 cradles...
12:20 I remember Storm, we accidentally nerfed Storm. My play group completely misunderstood the mechanic, and reasoned that the copies still needed to be paid for, so it was only useful if you had lots of extra mana.
Watching this video felt like a time capsule of emotions. This game has come a long way and so have we as players. Cheers to those who stuck around all this time!
As someone who played high lvl mtg tournaments in my high school years 96-01, my recollection of those years is quite different. From tempest-exodus, 'tradewind rider' comes to mind, along with the omnipresent 'hatred'. The later part is very interesting for someone who has just this year gotten back in the game. As an oldtimer do miss land destruction though... Cards like wasteland used to run as standard
Ha, I've also just started a year ago after a break of 25 years. Though I only played one tournament back in the day and only for 1,5 years during the Urza block (though it seemed much longer as a 14 year old). I found the decklist of the Goblin deck I played at that tournament and it listed 4 wastelands. Of course, I sold them for little beer money shortly after, as I did with most of my academy deck (which I built shortly after the ban just for the fun of it).
I distinctly remember playing Ernageddon when Ice Age hit. Seeing Jokulhaups ripped out of a pack of Ice Age, along with Orcish Lumberjack and Tinderwall made me enamored with it. Throw in a Zuran Orb and Stormbind, good times! Also, how can you not mention Plow Under from Urza's? God, that card was such a tempo screw... but not bad enough for most people to abandon all hope. It's like the chance of coming back from a couple resolved Plow Unders would keep you going, and just made it feel that much worse when you lost... Is it wrong that I love all of these hated cards a lot? Then I don't wanna be right! 🥳
Surprised Plow Under didn't get a mention in 1999. At least mass land-destruction is symmetrical. Plow Under not only is a double Stone Rain but also blanks essentially two draw steps as well. It is one of the most frustrating cards I ever had to play against, though that only happened when it was reprinted in 8th Edition.
Story time: I remember way back when, at a PTQ I was playing mindslaver lock. I was super dead on board game 1. I don't quite remember the exact board state but I remember I was dead next turn. I draw, Mindslaver (no academy ruin on board). I play Mindslaver, crack it, get to look at opponents hand and then I say this : "I want to see the sideboard" . My opponent immediately called a judge. Back then Mindslaver ruling was that you controlled all of the oponents actions, including peeking at sideboard. Judge ruled in my favour and opponent actually CONCEDES game 1 to make sure I don't get to see any information. I won the second game easily after that .
I was there in 2010/2011. The most hated card wasn’t anything you mentioned, though those were all rightly hated. The most hated card was Squadron Hawk. The least powerful card needed for the Caw-Blade decks that annihilated standard. Stupid bird that finds more birds. Not particularly broken, but very annoying with JtMS controlling card advantage, mental misstep and mana leak controlling board state, and a handful of swords and living weapons to give to your stupid, stupid little birds.
One card which definitely deserves an honorable Mention is Future Sight's Steamflogger Boss. The card was rare that did nothing! It was four mana for 3/3 and a joke. When it came out, everyone I knew would be so defeated opening it in a draft pack.
4:40 - Correction needed. Flash was SO POWERFUL that it was given power errata, which killed it, and it was the removal of the power errata - not Protean Hulk - which caused it to be powerful again. I played in that time. I know first hand. Steve Menedian wrote an article about how Flash was used with Academy Rector. People thought that Hulk combo might be too clunky and unreliable. They were wrong, but people were already buying copies for Rector Flash after the WotC began to remove power errata from Flash and other cards.
While Time Stretch may be hated, it is hilarious when I get to triple or quadruple multi-cast it in our pod. My group just agreed to treat it as a win condition. If I can resolve it, they all concede in response and we move to the next game.
That's kinda what I used to do whenever someone pulled a splinter twin infinite out of nowhere, except instead of conceding we'd say "okay you auto-win, now the rest of us will play for second place," and give them a big sarcastic smile.
Fay Jones is not just Richard Garfield's aunt. She was an accomplished professional artist at that point. Her style is just not inline with MTG. But, I would 100% buy a Fey Jones Secret Lair. If you are ever in Seattle she did the mural for the Westlake Transit Tunnel.
I'm pretty sure people hate the one ring more than orcish Bowmasters. At least that's what I have experienced. I am surprised you went with Bowmasters for 2023.
He said in another comment that he was working on this video a few weeks ago, so TOR hadn't blown up yet, and that if he did this video again, he'd pick TOR
That's not the problem with those cards though. The problem is that wheels punish the snot out of everyone whether they wish it or not, and often, the decks that abuse these draw punishers are also drawing a bazillion cards.
I will never forget the time I resolved a Jokulhaups against Tomer on stream :) "Ok this should wrap up the game, I've got Mogis on the board and surely everyone will die before they rebuild..." Tomer rebuilt like a champ while I struggled to find lands, but eventually I Rakdos Charmed him to death, using his rebuilt board against him. The one remaining Temur player killed me with an Omnath, but I had done what I came there to do.
Seems like a lot of these are through the lens of Commander. Commander wasn't nearly as popular when a lot of these cards came out. No way Rift was the most hated card of 2012. I seem to remember Supreme Verdict, Thragtusk/resto Angel etc. Most people wouldn't have even heard of notion thief in 2013. They WOULD definitely have had a groan inducing experience playing against Voice of Resurgence.
True-Name Nemesis deserves most hatred of 2013, no other card comes close. Not just for being awful to play against but because it started the trend of cards from supplemental sets ruining non-rotating formats
I feel like there was a bit too much commander focus with the exclusion of upheaval the choices for mirrodin block. Edit: I'm confused. Didn't worldpurge come out over a year after "grand arbiter whomever the 4th".
25:25 ya u & any1 who picked this showed they didn’t play during 2012 lol rift wasn’t even CLOSE The most hated card, Supreme verdict was Just shows how lost people are & since rift has become popular again they automatically assume it had to be most hated back then when its not even top 10 lol & 2011-13 was best standard MTG ever in history
I love how people who play competitive Magic like to talk down on these cards that are competitive staples. Like... SOMEONE is obviously playing them a lot, and it's not like everyone is going into a tournament to avoid annoying their opponent. You hate when your opponent has them, but I guarantee no one out there is gonna intentionally avoid using Thoughtseize in competitive play because it's "too disruptive"
I can't believe bowmasters is the most hated card. It has to be the most loved one, everyone wants to play this card and people's reaction when an opponent plays it is not as bad as when someone plays the one ring
Quite the opposite actually, The One Ring isnt really an issue since it wont win the game on its own and it doesnt prevent you from drawing cards it just helps the opponent a lot and if you know what you are doing and play around it you can get around its protection to everything. Bowmasters is imo Sheoldred on crack because they both tax card draw except Bowmasters has 2 bodies you gotta deal with and its 2 mana compared to 4 while also having Flash becuase why not oh and did I forget to mention its also not legendary? Also the only real good answear to a Bowmaster is your own Bowmaster which is not healthy for the game.
@@JulioDRaiany removal spell is a good answer for an orcish bowmaster. Another bowmaster isn't the greatest answer itself anyway since you have to rely on your opponent to draw cards, so you loose flexibility. And I'd argue that the massive amounts of card draw the ring provides wins games by itself in 60 card formats right now, especially since it's playable in any deck.
@@KeganKirby What removal you have that is 2 mana or less and removes both the bowmaster and the army? I'll be gald to hear all the good options we have that meet that requirement. Also idk what 60 card format you are playing where decks dont naturally draw tons of cards especially since almost everyone is running the Ring in their decks so Bowmasters are naturally good and you dont need to build around them or anything they are just another really strong midrange card you throw into any deck that has access to black.
As a control player, I'd 100% rather face the ring than the bowmasters. Bowmasters are just Sheoldred on crack for 2, which is supremely retarded, while the ring is a 4 mana card that kills you if they counter your other rings.
@@KeganKirby Removing the bowmaster with conventional removal would be a tempo swing for the bowmaster’s controller.. it’s a 2 for 1. Such is the problem with the FIRES design era where threats immediately generate value and snowball later on… best answer to a bowmaster is another bowmaster
Silly question, but is this list about the most hated card relevant to Commander? Because not seeing Arcbound Ravager/Skullclamp or Jace the Mind Sculptor for their respective years is really confusing. Because though either of them isn't super hated today, they were EXTREMELY hated for in their relevant times.
26:00 I once played a commander game that was about a 5 with a couple who started playing last week. The other guy insisted on playing his cedh orvar deck, and looped cyclonic rift every turn for AN HOUR (not an exaggeration) and the whole time bragging about how he has a $10000 deck, calling me, a fourteen year old poor and complaining about how I played too many budget cards that he had never seen before, peeked at everybody’s hand multiple times and then called me something that I won’t repeat when I left. I was ranting about this to a friend and that said oh yeah, I know that guy, he sucks.
Interesting. I'm very new to MtG (only played Arena, will find a small friend group now to have more fun) and Ragavan has already become my most hated card. Nexus of Fate is a close second.
Surprised that Sharazad isn't on that list. Playing subgame after subgame is so much fun for everybody. And when I saw that one played out in a game of Emperor (which already has space management difficulties for seating 6 players in a certain way), and some clownish player decided to fork that. well.
21:50 it should have been Emrakul. Shes hated so much that she got banned plus you get to take another turn if you cast her, which youve already said people hate
People really hated Divine Intervention? I've never seen anyone play it, it's a card designed for ante and nobody played with ante. It was banned because it could create problems in tournaments.
Wasn't played back in the day at all. I currently play it in an alt wincon tribal deck and the players that are losing are always grateful when I end the game in a tie.
Humility and mentioning Reclamation Sage triggered a memory in me. We were playing 4 player casual commander and one of the players let me borrow their Golgari deck. The other, BW player, played the Overwhelming Splendor, which is essentially the same card, but just for your opponents, and pretty much all the creatures in my deck had ETB AND death triggers. So, I'm like all sad and stuff, but as soon as my turn comes, I rip the sage off the top and immediately slam it only to realize... Oh yeah, it's just a 1/1 now. I've never had such a quick rollercoaster of emotions.
4:50 - Correction: With Gemstone mine, Flash could be played on "turn 0". Start the game with it in play and on your opponents' upkeep, before their main phase to even play a land and functionally play the game, you could exile either spirit guide and combo with Flash Hulk. Summoner's Pact was a 4 of to make the deck even more consistent and busted. I used to have a Vintage Flash Hulk in 2008
I was unable to convince my casual group to ban rhistic study... and they also didn't pay it very often, basically pouring 10+ cards into a single players hand for 2 mana
It did.. he was mentioned in the 2019 section… which seth mentioned the year also had lot of annoying cards and could probably have a section of its own..🤣
This would make a great video on its own. However, it might be nice to focus on some of the good things too, to balance it out. Almost every horrible period had its positive undercurrents. For example: even though Throne of Eldrain was completely busted and they had to ban several cards, the graphic design on the cards was surprisingly good. Making a set about fairytales and still making it cool is an achievement on its own.

I didn't believe that Orcish Bowmasters wasn't that good in preview season. Its a 1/1, who cares if it occasionally pings and makes an army bigger That was, until I opened a couple copies and realized if your opponent doesn't have an answer it is a monster of a card. I run it in a Shagrat historic brawl build and it is nutty
The early ones are all so unique and cool, I like that you used to be able to efficiently interact with mana bases. Sad they’re phasing that out in favor of overpowered threats and snowball resource accumulation with nothing to check it. Sometimes it’s nice to get into a top deck war.
They're really fun in vintage cube draft, but miserable in constructed. Once you reliably break the symmetry they become I-play-magic-and-you-don't cards.
I hate Drannith Magistrate in Commander…this one guy at my LGS always plays it. I bring new decks there that I lovingly brew, only for him to play a DM and prevent me from playing my commander. He plays it in a deck that allows him to loop counter spells so I can’t remove it…he also plays a Child of Alara deck. Hate that card too haha. Great video!
Worldpurge (and Apocalypse) can be broken by reanimating Worldgorger Dragon and casting Worldpurge (or Apocalypse) with floating mana. Its pretty jank but it works
Nah, fable is forgivable. Plenty of really good players underrated it when it was spoiled, it wasn’t an immediately obvious mistake like Lurrus. An Unfinity card needed to be the 2022 winner
The video was very cool, touring the "saltiest commander cards" by EDHrec despite half the actual monsters of each year ignored or left as honorable mentions. I really like the idea for this series but really hope they would be more localized to time period, as this + the reanimation creature video could be answered by me googling eternal format banlists and most hated cards of commander.
Fun fact, if you control two replacement effects, you get to choose. Tomorrow, Azamis familiar gets around possessed portal. Also doable with Panoptic mirror and a tutor, but if you have that you might as well put something really degenerate on it, like additional turns.

Shahrazad + Regrowth + Timetwister was an actual thing until Shahrazad was just banned.

The bowmasters arent a problem atm. They've been very whatever when I've met them accross the arena. Someone might find a way to make them stronger for competative play, maybe along the lines of sword of the meek and a cheap deathtouch buff. One Ring is likely the fastest to get banned as it's necropotence with upside. I dont particularly hate the card though. Nazgul need a slight nerf, something along the lines of "If your starting deck contains at least 100 cards, you may include 9 copies of this". My most hated in lotr right now would be rosie cotton, because sitting through the opponent's combo triggers is really tedious, especially when they dont realise they are dead on board no matter how much they spam out.
I think Nazgul are too strong unlike Bowmasters; you need up to 9 removal that do at least 3 damage, deathtouch, counterspell, enchant lockdown (also can suck if it doesn't disable pump), or return (which sucks against Nazgul); or you need multiple board wipes. Nazgul players also seem to understand this and usually only play 2-3 at a time and just Tempt over and over to pump while blasting your board. With 4 x Bowmasters you only need 8 removal max if you include the amass creatures, and returns completely kill them, enchant lockdown also completely destroys amass strat by placing on army, bowmasters die to 1 damage instead of 3, etc. Much easier to deal with. If I hadn't seen so many One Ring breaking strats I'd say Nazgul is my most hated.
Most of Nazgul's problems go away when you get rid of their consistency in a 60 card format. T1 Delighted Halfling T2 Nazgul T3 Nazgul +cmc1 interaction T4 Nazgul +cmc2 interaction The nut draw can be an opening play for any golgari deck. "Fair Agro" likes the t4 kill on the play before 4cmc sweeper. Midrange likes the 3 should answer threats that accrue residual value. Control likes the board tarpit that distracts and delays while they assemble an unstoppable wincon. If you take them down to 4/60, then they are less ubiquitous, so you as the opponent can react in a more informed way. (The Nazgul player is either midrange or playing jank in 4/60)
I was expecting 2008 to be Cruel Ultimatum. It pretty much singlehandedly warped Block Constructed and is just such an incredible swing of the game state that it's a major feels-bad whenever it resolves on you.
I love Jokulhaups and have always done. Even more so these days with Teferi's Protection... Just tap all that mana, cast Jokulhaups and then respond by casting Teferi's Protection... and one hearty laughing session later, you finally notice that your opponent has scooped, sold his cards, and left the venue.
It really bums me out that land destruction is such a hated archetype these days. I grew up with it and will always love it. Shoot i run Jokulhaups in my rakdos group slug deck, but i only really use it if I'm locking up the game (it notably doesn't kill enchantments 😂)

I'd say the main reason Alchemy is hated is because it pollutes Historic with perpetual and seek and conjure and all that nonsense.
I would disagree with the 2023 choice...... The One Ring will be more hated and probably banned before Bowmasters will.
Agree. I don't think Bowmasters should get banned, but The One Ring probably needs to be emergency banned in every format it's legal in.
imagine paying 2 million dollars just to have to Rule 0 your One Ring
I lost one time vs the one ring on mtg arena, this card suxx ;)
if you watch/play Legacy then Bowmasters is definitely your most hated card of the year so far
I hate atraxa more than bow masters. Bow masters is just a strong card.
2019 is def the worst year, I hope they never approach that level again.
I have an orc and ring for you to consider
Really? Combo winter nearly killed magic.
Probably in your memory…
Bro. Winter orb
I mean I stopped playing magic in 2019 for a reason. I haven't picked the game up again since. My only exposure to magic now is through Seth, just because I like Seth as an entertainer.
"2014 was a great year with very very few hated cards" Siege Rhino says hello
No one actually hated siege rhino though. It was literally honored as the best card in standard at the time and so many people made goodbye videos for it
When it rotated, I burnt my copy… that ass destroyed every little deck idea I had when I returned magic that year…
Siege Rhino wasn't a hated card.
The second Siege Rhino, on the other hand...
i think it was one of the most beloved 'best cards' in history of standard. it was just an efficient "fair" card that didnt hose any archetype (no not even aggro, multiple aggro decks existed despite siege rhino)

DUDE YOU HIT THE JACKPOT

I remember Storm, we accidentally nerfed Storm.
My play group completely misunderstood the mechanic, and reasoned that the copies still needed to be paid for, so it was only useful if you had lots of extra mana.
You invented replicate!
For 2006: I'm confused how worldpurge from shadowmoor is mentioned here as it is from 2 years later.
Wait, that cards not from Dissention?
@MTGGoldfish blame the hybrid mana cost, which originated in Ravnica ;)
Hoogaak from 2019 isnt on the list?
Guess it’s more hated for the response bans they chose rather than the card itself
Probably could have been a honorable mention.
Agreed, a lot of these seem to be hated now but not necessarily then.
Brb i have to get some popcorn with extra salt to watch this video
you should prolly get some low sodium popcorn, there's already enough salt in the video
winter orb was always paired with icy manipulator which was also in Alpha
Icy Manipulator - the original Urza.
I used to run a Plow Under speed green deck. It was so broken.
I used to play stupid green and run copies of both plow under and stunted growth. And good times were had by none.
Worldpugre came out in 2008 and in Shadowmoor not Dissension 2006.
nobody hated Divine Intervention; it was banned because forcing draws mucked with tournament matchmaking (which was still done by hand at the time).
It also wasn't even played before the ban which further shows how bizarre decisions behind bans were back in early mtg
Story time:
I remember way back when, at a PTQ I was playing mindslaver lock.
Does it still allow you to see sideboard? I never even thought of that
The One ring is my most hated card for this year already
I play Rakdos and seeing people pause on Arena finding out in real time that it gets countered by Stomp has been a blast these past weeks.
Not since I started auto-including exile permanent removal in every deck =) and also only when they play it with Sheoldred
@@VinniePaul91can you explain? Rakdos? Stomp? I’m new to MTG
I feel Tergrid deserves a mention, especially in Commander
During Khans, Siege Rhino was by far my most hated card... which in reality wasn't a bad thing at all
2004: Sensei's Divining Top
Everyone loved it at the time. Yes it was a bummer time wise but everyone loved playing with it.
Legend has it the first Top being spun is still resolving.
Ok, now make a commander deck with all of them in the deck.
It's crazy just how many cards there are for 2019 and 2020. It feels like there were way more broken cards in those two years than any other.
One card which definitely deserves an honorable Mention is Future Sight's Steamflogger Boss. The card was rare that did nothing! It was four mana for 3/3 and a joke. When it came out, everyone I knew would be so defeated opening it in a draft pack.
Hurts when you call "Protean" "Protein"
I always love watching these "blank every year" or the "niche moment" videos!
People need to accept that if you should be allowed to draw a bazillion cards, people should be allowed to punish you for doing so.
Same for my 5c mana bases
That's not the problem with those cards though. The problem is that wheels punish the snot out of everyone whether they wish it or not, and often, the decks that abuse these draw punishers are also drawing a bazillion cards.
I will never forget the time I resolved a Jokulhaups against Tomer on stream :)
"Ok this should wrap up the game, I've got Mogis on the board and surely everyone will die before they rebuild..."
Tomer rebuilt like a champ while I struggled to find lands, but eventually I Rakdos Charmed him to death, using his rebuilt board against him. The one remaining Temur player killed me with an Omnath, but I had done what I came there to do.
Excellent deck tech Seth, building this for fnm now, just gotta proxy up the original duals and I'm ready to rollllllllllllllllllllllllll
As a former and old-school Stasis player i object! It was the 1st card banned from our kitchen table, (and that was 2 years after release!) :)
Yeah, how much to focus on commander and how much to focus on 60 card formats is one of the biggest challenges of videos like this.
2004's Possessed portal + Tegrid, God of Fright deserves an honorable mention. You don't lose the permanent/card, you GIVE IT TO THE OTHER PLAYER!!!
I feel like there was a bit too much commander focus with the exclusion of upheaval the choices for mirrodin block.
Edit: I'm confused. Didn't worldpurge come out over a year after "grand arbiter whomever the 4th".
25:25 ya u & any1 who picked this showed they didn’t play during 2012 lol rift wasn’t even CLOSE The most hated card, Supreme verdict was
Just shows how lost people are & since rift has become popular again they automatically assume it had to be most hated back then when its not even top 10 lol & 2011-13 was best standard MTG ever in history
winter orb, also known as the orb of friendship
I love how people who play competitive Magic like to talk down on these cards that are competitive staples.
Like... SOMEONE is obviously playing them a lot, and it's not like everyone is going into a tournament to avoid annoying their opponent.
You hate when your opponent has them, but I guarantee no one out there is gonna intentionally avoid using Thoughtseize in competitive play because it's "too disruptive"
I can't believe bowmasters is the most hated card. It has to be the most loved one, everyone wants to play this card
and people's reaction when an opponent plays it is not as bad as when someone plays the one ring
@@KeganKirby
Removing the bowmaster with conventional removal would be a tempo swing for the bowmaster’s controller.. it’s a 2 for 1. Such is the problem with the FIRES design era where threats immediately generate value and snowball later on… best answer to a bowmaster is another bowmaster
I absolutely love Stasis, I love the artwork made by the Aunt, and I used to have a Stasis deck back on the day.
I love Jokulhaps! Fun fact, it's a real phenomenon where ice melts due to volcanic activity but comes out from underneath a snowpack/icepack.
I remember that Ajani! The deck, Tropical Hut, was really fun. I played it, though, before it was even an archetype. I feel pretty proud of that.
37:36 no longer everpresent, dockside is just banned 😂
Surprised that Sharazad isn't on that list. Playing subgame after subgame is so much fun for everybody. And when I saw that one played out in a game of Emperor (which already has space management difficulties for seating 6 players in a certain way), and some clownish player decided to fork that. well.
21:50 it should have been Emrakul. Shes hated so much that she got banned plus you get to take another turn if you cast her, which youve already said people hate
I love it when Seth randomly dumps on the Lord of the Rings movies, never fails to get a laugh from me.
Can we have a video for 'most hated decks'? This would be hilariously fun to watch
I'm begging you. Protean Hulk is pronounced "PRO-tee-an". It's three syllables.
I know nothing about Magic so most of this went over my head, but that “control your opponents turn” card sounds absolutely bonkers, I love it
People really hated Divine Intervention?
Time revealer Teferi is just ridiculous. The static ability alone is worth 5 mana at least.
i mean we have grand abolisher at 2 mana with a much stronger ability...
That doesn't combo with Knowledge Pool.
Teferi cards have always been busted so
4:50 - Correction: With Gemstone mine, Flash could be played on "turn 0". Start the game with it in play and on your opponents' upkeep, before their main phase to even play a land and functionally play the game, you could exile either spirit guide and combo with Flash Hulk. Summoner's Pact was a 4 of to make the deck even more consistent and busted.
I used to have a Vintage Flash Hulk in 2008
Ah, Protein Hulk! Love that card.
I was unable to convince my casual group to ban rhistic study... and they also didn't pay it very often, basically pouring 10+ cards into a single players hand for 2 mana
How did Oko not even get an honorable mention? Was it just so traumatising that Seth erased that busted planeswalker from his memory?
It did.. he was mentioned in the 2019 section… which seth mentioned the year also had lot of annoying cards and could probably have a section of its own..🤣
There was a brief mention in the long list of hated cards from 2019. Honestly, that year was so broken it was a bit overwhelming.

Its a 1/1, who cares if it occasionally pings and makes an army bigger
That was, until I opened a couple copies and realized if your opponent doesn't have an answer it is a monster of a card.
I run it in a Shagrat historic brawl build and it is nutty
I still remember the Oko is Broko memes. Annoying to play against, but at least he was nice to look at.
Do the other people at the table play no removal? even with some looping he shouldn't be able to consistently beat three people's removal

Great list Seth. Super funny walk down memory lane.
Most of these are fair magic or unplayed in the years they were printed so that's wild.
Ye this doesn't feel like a historical list, but rather what cards everyone hates in 2023. Winter Orb was not the most hated card in Alpha. That probably goes to Mind Twist, Balance, Sink Hole, or Strip Mine. I don't know how you could even skip over Shahrazad. Shahrazad + Regrowth + Timetwister was an actual thing until Shahrazad was just banned.
@@nekrataali absolutely this does feel like the perspective of a commander/ modern magic player rather than a person who spent time playing in that time. Imho the abyss and nether void were the most hated until 96 .

the "wanna loose some friends" add read really got me :DD
Heh heh. Loose.
So far 2023 might have to go to The One Ring. That card is truly obnoxious
T1 Delighted Halfling
T2 Nazgul
T3 Nazgul +cmc1 interaction
T4 Nazgul +cmc2 interaction
The nut draw can be an opening play for any golgari deck.
(The Nazgul player is either midrange or playing jank in 4/60)
I played possessed portal as a janky vintage deck, it was a combo with squee
I was expecting 2008 to be Cruel Ultimatum. It pretty much singlehandedly warped Block Constructed and is just such an incredible swing of the game state that it's a major feels-bad whenever it resolves on you.
One problem: no-one plays block constructed.
I once built an entire deck around Jokulhaups. It almost never worked, but when it did it was hilarious chaos.
Nexus of Fate was soooo toxic, but not gonna lie i loved played simic nexus in standard
I was a standard player until that deck plopped
its silly that orchis bowmasters is hated, its easily interacted with, counterspell? yep, burn? yep, removal? yep, fight? yes.
2023 not being The One Ring is kinda miss.
