Day Odyssey Series: Lost West Virginia!

- It's here! The next installment in our Baltimore-based drives takes us to some "lost" places in scenic West Virginia-literally! But first-some railfanning in Brunswick MD before crossing the Potomac into Virginia for a stop at the Purcellville station of the onetime Washington & Old Dominion RR. After that, we head west over some interesting routes, passing through historic localities along the way.
Then-on to West Virginia, over back roads! We do eventually wind up on a state "highway" though. After passing through Wardensville we head for our "lost" places-namely a river and two localities. Then it's...off the beaten path...again, literally! We use a secondary road where we, in March 1997, got a fantastic view of the valley! But-in the intervening years the trees along the road grew, obstructing any valley views! Better in 1997 anyway.
After arriving back at the beaten path we use more back roads to the main highways. Still some interesting places on those routes too. Then we gradually make our way back towards...well, you know.
Sorry it's taking longer to get these out, but I do thank those of you who inquire about my next release, especially if it's been a while since my last! And, of course, a big Thanx to all my viewers! The delay, as I've explained before, is due to my having to steady the video in my PC as opposed to it coming out of the camera already steadied. Each scene is a separate file, and they all have to be steadied one at a time! That's why I like using a tripod when I can...don't gotta steady those scenes!
Come along for the ride! Again!

It's at the 6:04 mark.
Missed you. Hoping for another odyssey soon. Southern Jersey would be nice.
Thank You for your interest! Putting finishing touches on one now! Hopefully will be up within the week. Also-did a drive a couple Sundays back, but been a while since I visited Jersey, considering I once had relatives in Carlstadt who later moved to West Caldwell. Was in southern Jersey in 1997 last. Took a back road deliberately after dark in hopes of catching Comet Haille-Bopp, which I did. Vid posted:

I'll be back one day!
@@bullfrog1954 Great news! Here in Vermont the roads I drove in the 60's still look the same except for the cars and and a replacement bridge or two. No fancy bypasses. I was last in South Jersey around Cape May in the late 50's and I've heard they still run excursion passenger trains. I remember a cement ship washed up on a beach too. I hope you are in good health and am looking forward to your next escape from the "burb"!
Another great one, Bullfrog. It is fun to follow you on my map while you do the driving! I hope you and Dolly are doing well!
Thank You! I've heard that others follow along on maps too! I think that's great!
You continue to give me good ideas for rides on the Harleys. Glad you guys are doing well and thanks for taking us along.
Thank You! Glad to have you along! Working on more now!
Good to have you back. Nice scenery.
Thank You! Good to be back!
I absolutely love your videos & you narration is top notch! Thanks for taking us on this journey with you.👍🏻
Thank You very much, Derek! Will have more on the way soon!
👍Looks like Lost river area would be a good ride for us to take on our dual sport motorcycles. That dirt road area would be good. Maybe some good spots to camp even.
I believe there are some camping areas within proximity of the "Lost" areas, and that dirt road might be good for "off-roading" though you're on a road! Very remote, though! Might be a good thing for sport cycles!
Thanks for showing areas that I'm researching for genealogy. I think my ancestors had some connection to the railroad.
Wouldn't it be great to find out you have a connection to the W&OD? Hope your genealogy research goes well! Let me know if you discover a connection!
@@bullfrog1954 I know my father's side worked for the railroad in Baltimore. My mother's side is where my research is currently at in Sandy Hook.
Great video Gus. I have got get back there. The Covid is going to be around for a while so I can`t make plans. Wonderful scenery and poetic commentary. The new surge is starting so be careful..
Again a big Thank You, Professor Bob! Definitely appreciated! So far, that new surge hasn't affected Maryland that much as it has the surrounding states, but it's probably gonna close in eventually. Going for a covid test this Wednesday the 28th as part of a pre-op for a stent procedure I'm having done on November 3. Gotta have three kidney stones removed. The stents are to make sure no tubes close, and will be removed a week after the procedure. Might be laid up for a while.
Hope one day you can make it east! Also hope those wild fires aren't affecting you.
Another wonderful video. 55 minutes of heaven. I love Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia it truly is Gods Country, and that's saying something considering I reside in North Yorkshire UK!!
Thank You very much!! I find it interesting that you love the mid-Atlantic, considering where you're from! Then again, I've seen some very nice scenery in the UK myself on travel shows and the like-wouldn't mind visiting! Maybe when this pandemic finally winds down you can come check us out! In the meantime-please stay safe!
@@bullfrog1954 when I visited the States in 1977 and 1978 I stayed in Oakland Maryland and of course that's pretty near West Virginia and not to far from Virginia so I traveled around through those States too. Those areas are so full of greenery, just beautiful. I always wanted to return but never really got the chance so watching your videos is the next best thing, so thank you and keep up the good work as long as you can.
So you've been here! I think that's great! If you were in Oakland in 1977 or 78 you were there actually before I was! My first visit was 1980! If you'd have gone south on US 219 into West Virginia, you'd have come to an interesting oddity-the smallest church in the USA. Reminds one of a shoe box, but still rather interesting to check out. Also-if you have Deer Park bottled water in the UK, most of it comes from a spring in Deer Park, east of Oakland. Also-whitewater races are held on the nearby Savage River. As you see, a lot went on and still does in Garrett County!
If you really like that area, here's a video you might enjoy on Garrett County showing points of interest in and around the county (including Oakland and the smallest church):

Some video I took in the 80s and 90s:

As you see, been doing this for a while now, and will continue as long as health allows. Thank you for your interest-and support. 👍😊👍
@@bullfrog1954 I found your RUclips channel because I had put a search in for Garrett County Deer Park about a year ago.
Oh, OK! That's cool!
Happy Thanksgiving🦃👍
Thank You very much, Dave! You too!
Remember our secret cellar search? Here's a vlog my brother did last weekend where he shows the paths leading there:

Well-we were close! 😊
@@bullfrog1954 yes I remember that! It's bothered for many years haha! I'm gonna click on that link and go look at it now 👍🙂
nice video bullfrog
Thank You, Jennifer! Much appreciated!
I Live in Southern West Virginia
The furthest south I've been is Marlinton.
Every time I watch one of your videos, it reminds me of Paul Simon's "Kodachrome". Makes me think all the world's a sunny day... Also, I agree with you on the flag in the window. Only recently has it been thrown back in the forefront by some nefarious folks as a way to sow discord, in my opinion.
Still got my copy of 'There Goes Rhymin' Simon'-on 4-channel vinyl! And, as a photographer, shot tons of Kodachrome! Ektachrome too. But, yes-shame that people are reading more into that flag than necessary (and probably deliberately), really just for attention. Thanx for the reference to...Kodachrome!
Love your videos God bless you brother safe travels out there please do a licoln hwy video in pa route 30
Thank You very much! Actually, I have done videos over US 30/Lincoln Hwy! Here's one from 2016:

Or-you can start at the beginning of each if you'd like...
Gus, did you know VA 7 used to be a Native American Trail?
I know VA 7 and US 50 were trails of some kind, but can't remember their significance. Back in the day I could've told you; used to study this sort-of thing at one time!
West Virginia country roads take me home to the place I belong West Virginia mountain mama
John Denver got it right!!
Speaking of speeding, have you been on 83 north of the beltway lately?
Yeah I have, but it's no different than other highways! I can handle 83 and 70...just can't handle 95! Can't stand that road! Only use it when I really have to!
