Ian, long time Ls based nut job here... I couldn't help but notice you said "5.3" and I see it's a gen 3 engine however seeing your pistons verifys it is a 4.8 the 5.3 came from the factory with a dished piston, the 4.8 came with a flat top, they use the same block but a different stroke The 4.8 has a stroke of 3.267 inches, the 5.3 has a stroke of 3.622 inches just thought i would share... being you're going twin turbo I don't think you're going to notice the difference but the 5.3 is good for a little more low-end grunt great video nonetheless always love watching what you do
@Daniel-Johnson no worries, I use to watch him & Jesse on Sat mornings & again on Sun. I was kinda truthful trolling Lol wondering if he will iron and spray his hair at 50, 60 or even 70yrs and when it becomes desperately funny
My early 80's one liter Suzuki SJ 4x4 blew a head gasket between cylinders (this was on Guam, the early SJ was not DOT legal in the U.S.). Used a 2x4 and sand paper to remove all of the high spots on the block & cylinder head.

Awesome build as always Ian 👍 love em or hate em the LS is a great platform and has a lot of affordable options and can fit in just about anything , im not ready to swap my 72 Nova sticking with the old school Small Block Chevy , it has the original 350 in it but i am building a destroakwd 350 for it it is a 331 , always wanted a little screaming small block . Lol i do plan on adding boost though not looking to make butt tons of power but i like to have some fun with it .
That ECU alone is more than the Holley or Haltech offerings, toss in the THOUSAND DOLLAR harness and it’s double the price of the more name brand competitors.
Big hair garage, I’m with you on this. I’m wanting to build the same but im thinking use a JY 5.3 like Richard Holdener did in project big bang. Check out his video. He shows running a JY 5.3 with turbos to see what it can do on the dyno before it pops.
I just rebuilt my first LS engine last year & didn't seat the thrust bearings...just great! The motor is in my Nova & runs but I haven't drove it other then in & out of the garage. Now I'm worried what's going to happen.
Great video man . just wanted to tell you mite want to double check I believe you have a 4.8 not a 5.3 with the flat top piston 5.3 have dished piston .
I've had three engines rebuilt. All three broke. On my Chevy 350 it developed a noise. I let anyone listen to it. Most said "rod bearing". After thinking about it and praying 🙏 I decided to do it with some help. We pulled it out and started taking it apart. I removed the timing cover and the chain was loose I was able to take it off. Took the cover to the parts washer and found where the chain was hitting it. Decision time. I could have just put a new timing chain on it and put it back in the truck. No. We went on and tore it down. Took the head's and crank to the machine shop. They gave me a valve job and polish the crank. I took a drill and a ball hone and learned how to hone a cylinder and another. Bought a 88$ re-ringed kit with bearings and gaskets. Put it back together. 115000 miles later I drove it 225miiles and gave it to a friend of mines half brother. My friend took his own life. So I gave it to his brother. He said he wanted to keep it. Less than a year later he sold it. No good deed goes unpunished. That's what true but, I didn't break it. I pulled heavy travel trailers with it. I ran the dog out of it. I had to do a similar thing to an Oldsmobile 350. Same thing only, the oil pick up was clogged up with plastic from the TIMING CHAIN. Did the same thing. Had to get one new piston. The aftermarket piston was lighter and the one from the dealer was 95.00. I got the dealer piston so I wouldn't have to balance the thing. It ran so good. I wish I had kept it. I ran it for 5 years. It ran so good. I guess what I learned was "you don't have to board all engines"regardless of what they say and, if they look at you like a cow looking at a new gate when you ask about torque plates, run away from him. He knows absolutely shit about nothing.
Did he just install the rings without even measuring end gap. he was just pulling them out the package and installing them straight on the pistons. Crazy!! Also i believe you got a 4.8 not a 5.3!
If the cam bearing came out seized on the camshaft then that means it spun in the block and wiped out that bearing bore. It will end up spinning the new bearing very quickly and leave you with a junk engine again. LS blocks are notorious for this problem. The block needs the cam tunnel align bored for oversized cam bearings.
Loving the videos I do have a question. I have a 2001 5.3 in my square body. It does have a cam Troion upgrade hard push rods LS seven lifters and over the winter I added a vs racing 7875 turbo and 80 pound injectors, my question is should I change from the factory thermostat? Should I go down to a 160 or a 180 or leave the factory one? and I am not running the radiator as a trans cooler I have a derale remote mount. I mainly street drive this thing and autocross.
Not that it makes any difference for the parts used or the power goals really, but flat top pistons usually means 4.8 vs 5.3. Same block and everything else, they even stamp them 4.8/5.3 and you can't tell the difference externally. Only difference is in the stroke of the crank and shorter rod length and flat top pistons on the 4.8 for a forced induction motor that is seeing higher RPM I really prefer the lighter rotating assembly of the 4.8. Its not a guarantee though and if you have flat top pistons in a 5.3 means higher compression as compared to the dished and no valve reliefs which don't give you much wiggle room as the piston gets awful close to the heads on the longer stroke of 5.3 which is not really what you want to keep together a budget rebuild you plan on running a lot of boost on. That makes the aftermarket heads you have a better choice but it could be important to note if you are reusing stock heads. You could measure the rods or check the casting numbers on them and know for sure what it is but from my chair to the naked eye those look like the "gen4" rods and pistons from a 4.8 from like late 2004-2006 and if it was a 5.3 I would have expected to see either a dish or valve reliefs but obviously their are plenty of odd ducks out there.
Came to comment this .. only small detail you mixed up is that 4.8 actually have a slightly longer rod length believe it or not. The rest are the same length 5.3 5.7 6.0
first thing, this might be a 4.8. The 5.3 had valve reliefs on the top of the piston. The 4.8 had flat tops like you have. Second thing, you definitely should have gapped your rings. under a boost situation the rings expand and hit eachother and will break a ring land. Lowered compression might help. But I worry about the longevity of this engine.
We get LS's All Day for Cheap here in Michigan, $250 for a 4.8, $300 for a 5.3, $350 for 6.0 and $400 for a 6.2 If in Stock, L60E and L80E's for Cheap, Try THAT with a Hemi or Coyote!😆
It was a LOWER cost rebuild for the short block because you reused some things but as soon as you threw new heads and that HPT core at it your costs skyrocketed. Good info for the rebuild but I hate the sponsored crap that always gets thrown in there like us on a budget are going to run right out and grab it!
Low buck build on the engine pretty sweet! Buttt, with a stand alone controller worth literally more than 3 times the value of the motor at $3G’s starting point (with harness)??? I love hp runners and have an mpvi pro, but Holley and several other stand alones blow this core thing out of the water for a fraction of the price!
As this is a twin turbo engine it will be capable of high boost pressures. Did you increase the gap on the rings? And by how much? What about the pushrods? Stock length or custom? Thanks for sharing.
Great video, but didn't someone establish at some point that the cam bearings in the LS engines usually look like this not because of wear, but because GM line honed them at the factory??? Don't know about this 100% but I believe I read that somewhere?
Ian if a cam bearing came out with the camshaft. You really should get the cam bearing seats checked. If the one is out of spec you could ruin an entire engine js. THAT IS A LOT OF CASH TO RISK!
Very true....BUT...and 5.3 is dirt cheap and if I spin a cam bearing again...I can replace this short block for less than the price of machining the cam seat
Slow down your drill speed and speed up your stroke speed when your "honing" those cylinders. You just made an extremely flat crosshatch which will starve the piston and rings from oil and cause ring chatter from lack of rotation which will kill the rings and cylinders prematurely and then you will have oil consumption. The rings require proper crosshatch angle so they will rotate as they go up and down. Ive seen it many times when blocks come in the shop with a "Honing" job preformed and the crosshatch is completely flat like that and the cylinders will have a chatter look from the rings chattering from improper oil film and not rotating.
Nice job on the short block. Can you explain why the balancer is so rusty looking? I have seen this on so many other motors. Did you use any sealant with the head gaskets? How much $ do you estimate you got into the truck?
Not a fan of how you used that cylinder hone... The flat stones are meant for deglazing and reshaping holes, the ball-type "dingleberry" hones are for cross-hatching. 💯
Don't use a 2x4 for that block conditioning. Use a large piece of flat steel. I have a nice 2x4 1/8" square tube that I like. I'm sure you've got some good straight stuff laying around. Don't use steel wire wheel on aluminum pistons! soak the pistons in cleaner and use nylon or brass brush.

Nice budget build video. Curious if the rings got any extra gap for the boost?
I didn't add any because I don't plan on adding a pile of boost....maybe 4-7 lbs.....if I was hunting for every inch of power I would done that yes
I've also got a 4.8 that needs a crank. Might be worth a 5.3 conversion for a little extra $.
Cool Project 👌🏻😎🏁
first thing, this might be a 4.8.

What are we gonna do now that at least 2 of the teams for the onx off-road challenge are gonna be 1-2 days late? Robbie and Rudy so far
They will not earn the votes in the comps they misses
Can’t get any easier 🍻👍
Ian if a cam bearing came out with the camshaft. You really should get the cam bearing seats checked. If the one is out of spec you could ruin an entire engine js. THAT IS A LOT OF CASH TO RISK!
Very true....BUT...and 5.3 is dirt cheap and if I spin a cam bearing again...I can replace this short block for less than the price of machining the cam seat
Be sure and include that 2 x 6 in your tool list ha ha
Ha ha....forgot it
Slow down your drill speed and speed up your stroke speed when your "honing" those cylinders.
Long time no see ian.
great video thanks
When building a short block like this, Do the rebuild kits come balanced, Clearance? Rings gapped? etc
😂dude is probably just in this engine for the video. Acting like he knows how. Kinda stated it himself when he said "my engine builder"
Well I don’t think this is his 1st rodeo……😂
Lovin it!
Good point...I have used wire wheels on bench grinders for years to clean up pistons on low buck rebuilds
Hell ya brother!!!
did you gap the rings for boost? never saw it mentioned🤷♀️🤷♀️
I still love the good ole small block chevy... big block chevy is my favorite...
I got a 6.2 ls (level 3) im hoping to do something similar with it.
Hey mate im from perth west australia i was wondering what was the music by in your vid witch by the way i enjoyed (the 2nd song )
every camshaft is a turbo camshaft just ask Richard Holdner LOL
That is true!!!
I'm curious why you didn't replace or even mention not replacing the wrist pins connecting the piston to the rods. Do they not wear on the LS?
Low buck rebuild....running what is there
