  • Al spent nearly three years hidden by an Indonesian-Dutch family, cared for by their Muslim nanny. He was largely confined to the house and backyard for fear of raising suspicion among neighbors and passersby. “The only view that I had of the outside world was through a mail slot in the door,” remembers Al.
Hear Holocaust survivor Al Münzer’s experiences in his own words recorded on September 7, 2022, 2022. First Person is a monthly hour-long discussion featuring a live interview between journalist Bill Benson and a survivor and including questions from the audience, available on the Museum’s RUclips channel.

Surrounded by a sea of hate it’s still possible to do what’s right. Your words are so poignant. What a beautiful way to end a heartbreaking yet incredible story. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Thank you for this series💔🙏. AS a child of German/East Prussian ancestors, it shook me when I first heard about this as a child for a long time I was embarrassed to say I was of German descent. I’ve made Peace with that aspect but still so angry. In college I took every elective offered in WWII. A Rabbi from Hebrew UNION College taught it. That was 20 years ago. I still have my notes. I’m from Cincinnati, Ohio.

Thank you, Dr. Munzler, for that beautiful interview; it's rare to hear the story of a very young survivor. I'm sorry your father and sisters did not survive the war, but I'm so glad you and your mother survived, and that you were lovingly cared for by your "second" family, the Madna family. I'd love to hear another interview with you, to share with us how you began your new life after the war was over, and the circumstances of how you came to the US, your family, and your career as a physician. Your message at the end of the interview was beautiful.

Thank you for all that you do. Al’s parents were incredibly brave to make the choices they made. G-d has a special place for all of them.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. Amazing what a person can remember after so many years when most would want to forget. True humility of one to think of others even in time of possibly being arrested or killed for saving others. I would hope I would do the same and am sure I would but have never been placed in such a situation.

I watch this whenever I get it on my phone and I am in Bend Oregon. I was able to go to the holocaust museum in Israel and it left a lasting impression on me.
