How Heroin Defeated America in Afghanistan | The War on Drugs

- In 2021, the world watched as the US military retreated chaotically from Afghanistan after 20-years of war.
But in Afghanistan, America was defeated as much by the illegal heroin trade as by the Taliban itself. This is how heroin has fundamentally reshaped Afghanistan as a country for decades - and how you can’t understand the West’s failure there without it.

When an old friend used to go to score, he frequently used to joke: "Just off to do a bit of fundraising for the Taliban". Looks like he was pretty much spot on to me. RIP Billy, you certainly had some inner demons, but you were funny and charming with it and I really miss you.
That’s really some good black humour. I am sure he’s just a good person at heart with a bad habit. Most US dope is overwhelmingly Mexican based though. Afghani heroin goes mainly to users in Europe and South Asia. It’s less “harmful” subjectively than the Mexican fentanyl laced dope that has killed so many in North America.
War was the goal, not winning it. Just take money from taxpayers and give it back to the rich.
As someone who has lived thier whole life in either Philadelphia and or Souther Arizona. Your friend was definitely definitely not funding the taliban but the Mexican government, thats a different story for a different ray. R.I.P. Mexican Rob a Kensington legend.
I lost my cousin to an od. She was weird and funny. She had two boys with a man that she used with but I have to say that they loved each other and frankly I really liked the guy even tho he was bad for her and their family. She over dosed while he was in jail. When he was released he found out about her death and he committed suicide. I'm not a user and never have been. I had never envied their lifestyle but I miss them both all the time. Good people fall to deadly habits sometimes. It's a heartbreaking process to watch. Loving the best parts of someone while the worst parts of them succeed in killing them is enormously painful. Your a good person :)

So when I was briefed on Afghan, the OP was to destroy the opium. The next time I was briefed the OP had shifted to allow the opium to be grown. This was because local farmers could sell a handful of opium at the equivalent price of a field of grain. This was to win the hearts and minds of the Afghan farmers

Vietnam was the leading heroin producer before and during Vietnam war. Our mission didn't pan out there either weird that.

The Army put me in a “grieving period”, and during that time I learned about our soldiers defending the poppy fields that fuel the pharmaceutical industries opiate products that killed my brother, and I dissolved my enlistment. Now my nephews are enlisting because they feel like they have no opportunities, and I tried to warn them, but NeoAmerican propaganda is stronger than any argument I could levy, sadly. If only I had a multi billion dollar budget to create Hollywood movies and tv shows like the CIA does, I could probably change people’s minds. Also, don’t kid yourselves about illegal heroin. The Taliban isn’t row boating heroin to the cartels in South America. The CIA is shipping it to them directly on sanctioned cargo planes and cargo ships to feed their black budget operations. We are the bad guys, stop deluding yourselves.

Much love to everyone struggling in here, its a daily battle and remember day 1 can always be today. Dont give up
One US marine officer replied during a patrol with a journalist with regards to the vast fields of poppies and why the ISAF wasn’t taking steps to curb or destroy the crops. Reason he gave was very logical and simple: Our task is to root out and engage the insurgents, not take away the livelihoods of poor farmers whose entire families depend on it. If we do take harsh measures, it is likely that the same farmer or his family members would join the insurgency or not inform us that there is an IED ahead on the next road we are driving into. Those are ground realities that soldiers have no control over with, with members of the western appointed government in Kabul having a hand in the trade themselves!

Let's say it clear - war for drugs, not on drugs))))
The war on drug was originally created by President Richard Nixon’s domestic policy chief, John Ehrlichman. It had one purpose: put black people in jail. I guess he felt bad about his role and talked about it, saying:
“The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and Black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or Black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and Blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. **Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did. ** ”
Ironically, Reagan used the war on drugs to flood black neighborhoods with crack cocaine to then use the money to fund the Contras against the Sandinistas. So when Nancy Reagan was telling all of us to "just say no", her husband was the drug dealer, getting black people hooked on crack!

I and my family and even my mother's recent passing are all undeniable evidence of heroin winning the war on drugs
I’d consider not doing heroin.
It’s in my family and a lot others to bro..
I'm sorry. It is here in mine as well.

THE REAL REASON WE WERE THERE GUARDING THE POPPY FIELDS
And now we don't need them, because synthetic opiates are WAY easier to manufacture. No need to rule an entire country for it.
Lol, that guy trying to lure a sniper with his hat sticks up the whole gun aswell like nobody would see that too🤦🏽♂️
Where I'm at in NC it's virtually impossible to find heroin, it's 99.99% fentanyl now. And once you move to fent, heroin won't work to cure dope sickness.
Damn.
Yep. I'm in NC too and you're spot on
Seriously ???
Thanks

I don't see how heroin is a topic considering fentanyl is ripping through the streets these days?
I mean, why not both?
....well, there you go. No need for poppies any longer! The US has Fentanyl... why guard an entire country for only it's poppies when Fentanyl can be synthesized and manufactured for much cheaper... not to mention it's 100x stronger. What a shame.
It’s the Chinese

America is like the rich kid in class who could afford everything but didn't have any purpose in life
Let me leave you with a thought: What if Afghanistan was given up on because synthetic opiates like Fentanyl are easier to produce, 100x stronger, 100x lighter, and don't require maintaining an entire country?
Leave the "problematic and difficult to manufacture" stuff for the local market.
Then why are we letting China dominate the trade of it?
@@nacanacoo I never said I had all the answers, but I'm sure we are all in collaboration all over the world, hand in glove, behind closed doors, pervasive, throughout administrations.
Fentanyl has been around since the 1960s. Why go to Afghanistan in the first place then?
That’s like saying we can make nicotine synthetically, no more market for cigarettes. Bullshit, doesn’t work like that.
@@roughhouse5034 maybe they're getting better at diluting it
I love it when a British person points out the US failure with out sharing the info that the British Government failed too in destroying the poppy's.
Also found it funny how he called the Afghan government (ie US puppet) a "legitimate government"
Why would they destroy something that’s more valuable then gold?

My unit went to Afghanistan to teach the locals how to get bigger yields out of their food crops. I’m pretty sure they’ll be able to sustain their people from the “corn & wheat” they grow. 🇺🇸
We the public are never told the truth about anything.
As I keep saying (I work in a job that has ALOT of interest) The USA a keen interest. In keeping the dollar. Strong. Now the narco-dollar is as important as the global economical dollar, heroin production has risen massive. Since 9/11 they have secured the market but not repeated the mistake of the 80s with cocaine. From South America. ( flooding there own streets causing a pandemic, this is fact) this time most the route are to the middle east Russia and Europe. The USA is trying it's hardest to stay the number one super power.
Heroin is cheaper and stronger than ever. Pakistan. Is like Columbia it's not the largest producer but the market Centre. Thought most of Europe. Go's via Iran and Turkey. Russia literally borders Pakistan and Russia. Drugs internationally on a large scale are sold in dollars
There is clandestine lab made fentanyl on the streets. Heroin is rare now. It’s intentional.
@@atomicstyle7344 more so in America not so in Europe.
Heroin is far from rare. Guess you havent been to St.louis?
it kind of puts into perspective how Mexico struggles so hard with the cartels: drugs basically fuel an indefinite, empire destroying insurgency.
This is what they want to believe. But the truth is opium production was at it lowest when taliban were ruling afghanistan in 90s. After the USA occupation the production sky rocketed. Many of the politician (former warlords) that the US was supporting against taliban did drug trafficking and they were really close to CIA.
