I'm a Vietnam vet (70-71) and all my friends from high school had college deferments, but you had to APPLY for a deferment, the military didn't just label you "1Y" as Ted says. Sketchy ?
I had a friend Robert Davis At the age of 17 he volunteered for the United states Army. He had his mother and father sign for his entrance in the Army. He then volunteered for airborne after that he volunteered for duty in Veit nam .he served 18 months . I asked him if he was there for the Tet offensive. His reply yes with the 101st at Hue . I had worked with me many times as carpenters on different jobs..so i had many chances to talk to him about his war experience. One conversation,he told me he had been been recived a rain like shower from planes. spraying agent orange. Last time i saw Bob it was a couple of days before Christmas. Looking thin and weak. He informed me of the cancer he had . We talked a bit it the store still with a good attitude. The last words to me was "see ya later " Within a month he was gone . He once told me joining the Army was the stupidest thing he ever did. He was one of the bravest men i ever knew. I miss him.

He then volunteered for airborne after that he volunteered for duty in Veit nam .he served 18 months . I asked him if he was there for the Tet offensive.

I had worked with me many times as carpenters on different jobs..so i had many chances to talk to him about his war experience.
One conversation,he told me he had been been recived a rain like shower from planes.
