They are Gods. Gods don't specifically come as one race only or any specific race. There's no writings in Egyptian mythos that says "Horus was an Egyptian!" No, they were gods.

I've got no problems with director interpretation, its essential to making a film via source material, but i'm not going to excuse shit when i see it, especially so when is rich and open for interpretation. this seemed like such an easy missed opportunity.

Not necessarily. Every time a new pharaoh was put in place, they changed the pantheon. Some times they were monotheistic, and sometimes they have tons of gods. It can be really hard to nail because you often can only use writing from the life time of one pharaoh.

I kind of dodged a bullet with this one. My friend wanted to see it with me but we ended seeing Zootopia instead. Phew.
Honestly, this movie is actually one of those really bad movies that are so much fun to watch, so it is really entertaining in that aspect.
Although, I've never understood why people think they've dodged a bullet by not seeing a bad movie. It's kinda shortsighted. I'd encourage people to watch as many bad and good movies as possible.
Besides, you don't know if you will like a movie unless you see it.
Go back and watch it, you'll get a good laugh.

I was talking to my wife about this movie. My wife is Peruvian, and Peruvians tend to lean heavily on their Inca and other indigenous tribal heritage more so than their Spanish heritage. And we decided if Hollywood were to release a film set in ancient Tahuantinsuyo and revolved around South American mythology from that era, but with an almost entirely white cast, it would be complete bullshit and everyone would mock it for that.
It makes no difference here. It's unacceptable to make a movie dealing in ancient Egyptian culture and not have a single Egyptian or Egyptian-like actor. Obviously you don't have to find Egyptians for all the roles, but it's stupid you couldn't even find people who could pass for Egyptians or at least people of African and/or Middle-Eastern heritage. When you cast for a role you need to not only focus on the performance but also the look and feel. This film didn't look or feel Egyptian at all despite the pyramids and jackal-headed men because of the actors.
But in the end it was a terrible movie anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter.

This is probably the most enjoyable "bad movie" I've seen in a long time. It's the perfect "shit film" you could imagine because it actually kept me entertained throughout, unlike alternative "shit films". I think comparing it to Batman and Robin is a bit unfair.
I consider Batman and Robin to be a perfect fun bad movie to watch, so I think it's a perfect comparison.
I watch Batman and Robin at least once a year.

@@phanirajvempati5876 If you're enjoying a movie then it's enjoyable. But it can still be "bad" from a technical perspective, e.g. you could have bad lighting but a funny script. Or, great cinematography but badly acted. Technical aspects can be objectively measured, but enjoyability trumps technical finesse since most of the time we want to be entertained. Doesn't mean those flaws don't exist.

"The Crow" and "Dark City" were two of the most visually splendid films of the 90s. How Proyas could direct those dark fantasies and end up doing this shit...I seriously think there must be something wrong with him.

+Gregory House I think you're underestimating how hard it is to get work in Hollywood. If struggling Egyptian actors were offered a role in a huge Hollywood blockbuster, even if it was offensive to their people, I wouldn't blame them for not turning it down. Food and a place to live comes before pride.

Gods of Egypt looks like Clash of the Titans meets 300 meets Exodus: Gods and Kings. I'm sorry but from the trailer, I could tell this was not going to be a decent film. Another big problem many people have with films like this and Exodus: Gods and KIngs is what people refer to as "white-washing" many of these things seem to have even though they take place in Africa though we see most, if not all the royalty and main cast have whitish-colored skin even though realistically not many, if any, people of whitish-colored skin would even be there let alone rule.

Alex Proyas is one of my favorite directors even though he rarely shoots a film. I love Dark City with all my heart. I also had seen the trailer of "Gods of Egypt", but when you started "Oooooh myyy goooood" I knew you would say "it's super bad" cause the trailer didn't look like it would be too great. I'm as disappointed as the time you saw a movie like "The Last Airbender" from your favorite director.
If you shut down your brain before watching the movie, you can actually enjoy it.

I am a big fan of Ancient Civilizations and consider myself a history nerd. Hard for me to hate this and I didn't, but boy was it sh*t. CGI, Acting, Unearned Character development if any to be found, sh*tty loose plot and f*cking stupid actions. Very funny, also it dragged so much and the direction is poor too. Not to mention I couldn't tell what the f*ck was going on and I would just give up and accept that I am looking at colorful sh*t. Kinda expected tho, glad saw it on netflix.

Visually I thought this movie was pretty good, the cgi was definitely overused but the movie was still creative and the costume designs were really impressive.

_Thor_ had blacks and Asians playing Scandinavian gods and no one batted an eye. Director Ridley Scott explained pretty clearly why a mostly white cast is unavoidable--try shooting a big budget movie starring Mr Mohammed such-and-such just for the sake of ethnical accuracy, you're simply not going to get financed. Just imagine if they had shot the film with mostly Egyptian or black actors--the trailer wouldn't even hit 1 million views on RUclips.

I guess all the good or interesting actors were taken, and this film had (supposedly retired actor) Gerard Butler and some actors (one of them is going to play as Black Panther. HINT: Ibis), the CGI is like the Star Wars Prequels/Clash of the Titans/Jupiter Ascending (Sorta) quality, a director who was successful... a decade or two ago, and is released during the "dump months" in February.

I never got the impression that it was supposed to be taken seriously. I just thought it was a CGI playground for Egyptian mythology; Clash of the Titans on the Nile. I got exactly what I expected, but I also got a few visuals that I didn't expect which made me like it more. I don't think this was ever trying to be taken seriously. I'm just glad there was a movie about Egyptian gods. We do not exploit that mythology enough.

It felt like a weird sidenote. I guess it's distracting to see a movie set in a certain place and none of the actors looks right - as if someones plays e-guitar during a movie set in the in the Victorian times, it doesn't fit.

I remember when the movie ended, some asshole started clapping and then everyone was clapping. It was a dark day that day.
It seems like most people seem to be discussing the one sentence at the end of the video concerning the mostly white cast. Sometimes Hollywood gets away with primarily white casts in places where it would make sense to have a little more diversity, but when "Egypt" is both the setting and in the title of the movie, I think it makes it that much more noticeable. It would be like a movie called "Chinese New Year" or something that takes place in Asian featuring a mostly Hispanic cast. There are times when it's just staring you in the face and people just can't help but call it out.
I almost puked while watching the trailer of this movie. It looked so ridiculously awful. This is the kind of movie that should have come out in the 90s along with Steel, Mortal Kombat Annihilation and Batman and Robin.

Since Gods of Egypt has came out, I've watched twice already. And I'm planning to see again on this weekend. I find this movie amazing,epic and the graphic was breathtaking.
