What is azelaic acid good for
Azelaic acid is used for dark spots, melasma, acne, rosacea, and numerous other skincare benefits. Azelaic acid has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that the skin sometimes needs.
How does azelaic acid work
Azelaic acid is also known as a tyrosinase inhibitor, meaning it can prevent hyperpigmentation because it interferes with melanin production, the compound contributing to darker complexion. To be more specific. first, it encourages cell turnover, and as we know, this can exfoliate the skin and promote new, healthy skin growth. Secondly, azelaic acid also has antioxidant properties that help remove free radicals that can contribute to dull skin for a naturally brighter complexion.
Azelaic Acid 10 or Azelaic Acid 15
Does that matter? Thats a good question since, much of the research" on topical azelaic acid is for prescription-strength formulas of 15- to 20-percent. Not to worry though, because the 10% solutions you find online and over the counter have combination products in addition to the azelaic acid to boost the effects of azelaic acid more effectively than when used alone. Which is why you often see it used with licorice, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and more.
How long does azelaic acid for melasma take
Now you probably either clicked on this video because you are new to azelaic acid and are just starting or you've given up on the product after it brought no results. One thing you might be forgetting, which is that one factor we don't like at all, and that is Time! Prescription strength requires a minimum of 2 month commitment before results are seen, and for over the counter products, you’ll see results after three to four month commitment. So if its not been time yet, I would keep applying it and not stop just yet.
Azelaic acid gel or Azelaic acid serum
Azelaic acid comes as a gel, foam, or a cream to apply to the skin. It is usually applied twice a day, in the morning and the evening. To help you remember to use azelaic acid, use it at around the same times every day.
How to use azelaic acid
Start off by using it in the final step of your skin care routine, so that you prevent it from smearing. Use it as a spot treatment for inflamed or dark areas of the skin, blending it out, so it doesn't leave a sharp demarcation. Wait at least 15 minutes before lying down in bed and sleeping on your back so you absorb it more effectively.

Hello! Thanks for posting. I've had discoloration around my mouth for several years. Docs always say, "it's just you and how your skin is!" I never believed that. Strange thing is, mine actually improves and somewhat evens out during the summer and when I'm in the sun. It worsens when Fall comes around and the weather gets very dry and cold. It actually darkens a lot. I have learned to get Facials more often during Fall and Winter, and it helps but I'd like to cure it. I'm curious as to why that area is so dry and if that is a symptom of the condition. Please let me know, and thanks again. 😊
I take birth control for hormonal acne & hairloss it's helped alot. Over time I have developed light brown patches on my skin cause of it. Coming from the dermatologist they've given me azelaic acid and for the wash glycolic acid , I'm only about 1 into my routine, but skin definitely is less inflamed I could see dark spots fading but my biggest joy is no small acne bumps on my cheeks and forehead my skin actually looks smooth

Good day, I use skinoren for my back and chest, due to hormonal acne. I discovered it made my back very dry and I got some pimples.. should I use a moisturizer before or after the application of skinoren and if so which one would you advice.
I use 15% skinoren as well. On my face and chest. I use heavy moisturizer that doesn’t clog my pores and it has helped with dryness.

It's actually recommended on paulas choice website . I've tried it myself . It works faster and better , but I don't think It should be done more than once or twice a week , to avoid over exfoliation . Yes , you can do it , but start slowly . Exfoliating in general shouldn't be done every night in my opinion , let alone layering two acids . Paulas choice azelaic acid booster is a great product , but it already has some salicylic acid in it , which is great of course . I hope I was helpful . Good luck !

Hi Na. Yes! You can use them in that way. The benefit of the hydroquinone at night is better since it is undisturbed without any exposure to free radicals, such as UV light and pollution. The azelaic in the morning will keep working until the HQ at night.

I had the same problem with skinoren cream (20% azaleic acid). use a moisturizing cream before, or after.Made a huuge difference to my skin, do that untill your skin builds tolerance and then you can stop with buffering. good luck

Happy to answer your question! In the beginning, use vitamin C in the morning then the moisturizer/spf and azelaic acid as the last step in the evening. This is so we can avoid any possible irritation when starting.

That is such a great question. I would love to see a study where they only took 10% Azelaic Acid and compared it with other combination formulas, to see what it would do by itself. Interestingly, in 2011, they did a 20% azelaic acid cream 2x/day and found it may be more effective than hydroquinone 4% in reducing mild melasma. As of now it is mostly anecdotal evidence.
