Bravo Philip!! Perfect sampleset for this and it's always interesting to see the different approaches each performer takes - I loved the echo effects you created with just articulation around 4:50 :) Wonderfully relaxed playing!
Cordialement. Olivier
I did not listen to this video before as I have heard so many versions of it and have a favourite recording, But to my surprise, I really enjoyed it. I like the relaxed style , the freshness and richness of the sound which is fantastic from your instrument. The fugue is a very fine innovative composition and I think one of the best that Bach wrote. You do it great justice. One day I hope you will play the other Toccata and Fugue in D minor (Dorian) by Bach . While I love this Dorian Toccata, I have never been able to appreciate this Fugue. I would be interested to hear how you interpret and play the fugue which may enlighten my perception of it.
THANKS Stuart. I haven't played the Dorian one and I feel the same as you. The toccata is brilliant but the fugue not that much. I will try and find the score and perhaps make a rendition of it.
@@philipaggesen Yes I feel the fugue doesn’t seem to go anywhere and drags on to the finish. Perhaps a good reason not to learn it. Talking about the Fugue in G major BWV 541 I feel it is also not Bach’s best but in saying that some listeners have stated they do enjoy both. In learning it I am trying to decorate some of the monotonous repeated notes with ornaments (turns, mordants, trills etc) to try and make more interesting. If I have a PDF copy of the Dorian Toccata I will email it to you
Well played! I love this piece dearly, so allow my some questions and remarks... I wish you would have chosen the Noordbroek set: the Rotterdam is swamped in reverb taking away any possible definition on the voices in the fugue. I would chose 'dramatic' instead of 'grandiose' anytime for this piece, as definition is as important as vehemence I think. Also, have you tried to play the last Recitativo and Presto with staccato phrasing? (Having two registers in these Recitative and Presto for right and left hand can add so much to the melody...) The final cadence (7 bars) I would play much slower (it is Adagio and Molto Adagio anyway) and non-legato on the main chords to let it breath and crown the piece with this magnificent progression, with the final three chords with a persistent upper D but otherwise non-legato.

Martin
Mange hilsner Martin
Excellent richness of sound and majesty. Your rendition takes this piece to soaring heights. Bravo!
WOW - So grateful to read your kind comment!
To me sounds a little too muffled, the high's are not distinct enough.
wow that pedal - very articulate playing Philip - bravo. Good that another organist doesn't wear shoes when playing the pedals.
Dear Michael. Thanks for your kind comment and to the fact I don't use shoes 👞 (90% of the time I play the organ)
Amazing! Hearing you play this gave me inspiration to learn the fugue.
That’s wonderful my rendition could inspire you 🙏🏻
Brought a chill to my spine! Thank you! 👍
A musician's job is to bring emotion to the listener so I'm very grateful for your comment! 🙏🏻
One of my favorite Bach Pieces. Sounds incredible! Thx so much for posting

Gorgeously played and the sound is wonderful!! 👏 👏 👏
Dear JS! Much appreciated and thanks for leaving a kind comment. I always means a lot reading what you guys think!
Bravo!
Thanks kind Gorman!
Sublime, Philip!! I think it have to be very difficult to play with this organ reverberation, but at same time, more satisfying.
The reverb definitely can be a hit jarring but I'm glad to hear it was worth it ☺️
absolutely outstanding
