I am always delighted to see a new BSD flavor video, but it would be great to see more of the OS in action instead of just focusing on the installation process.
No Xorg or desktop being installed could be a deal breaker for a new user. That's something GhostBSD does right for new users out of the box. However, most FreeBSD users would be able to figure it out. But it seems like from this video, that was a bit more of a challenge than expected.
I think it's mainly about effort and interest. If someone really wants to switch to another OS, they'll just do it. That's what I did.
Booting the live CD is a great diagnostic. Many problems might show up and it will configure devices (or not).

Got excited to give it a spin, but MidnightBSD has broken links depending on which repo you try and go with. I am in AU and I am getting connection reset when the installer tries to read packages from the UK repo and the desktop package unknown when I use US repos. This is the type of breakage that means your OS never gets a look in because it ramps into too difficult for the average punter almost immediately. I am an older duck like you, so no probs. I could motor into it, work out which repo is going to get me there and then do a manual install of the GUI or compile from source if I had someone point a cannon at me. But I just don't know if I have the f$%^ks to give if the owner can't get simple stuff right. I do empathise though.
I remember loading i915kms in my rc.conf fixed the xorg issue; for intel graphics of course

Distros...? They're brothers, not distros.
Not in the sence of Linux but they are distros by definition. It's in every "branch" name, freeBSD, netBSD, openBSD, midnightBSD, where BSD stands for "Berkeley Software DISTRIBUTION".

Can anyone suggest a *bsd or Linux for an early 2008 15” C2duo MacBook Pro ? Preferably one with the least amount of issues, out of box, or helpful resources ro fix issues?
Personally I would give OpenBSD a chance. Straight forward. Light weight. Start with official documentation.
If I disagree with the Linux ecosystem, I'm going to instantly reach for BSD. Love your content.

@@knoxduder If I have a philosophical difference with something like a Linux Code of Conduct or politics in computing, pivoting to BSD is always an option.

NetBSD 10 has the same problem. There's no Xorg on their repositories.

Ahaha, that’s where I’m at with GhostBSD. Can’t get network or pointing device to work in VM and can’t get Panel to display on physical hardware. Reminds me of Linux back in the day.
GhostBSD is very different, and does work for me in VirtualBox.
@@grahamperrin I was trying to run it in a Qubes VM. For some reason Qubes refuses to work with *anything* Unix-derived. I did get GhostBSD working on real hardware.
Unless your PC has a dedicated PCI Express graphics card, a slot-in nvidia or ati(amd) add in card, you probably want Intel / drm-kmod. If you're using an AMD Ryzen Pro or something with an AMD chip, you may have AMD graphics.
Probably 90% of people will want to use drm-kmod. This is what I use on my 2008ish thinkpad with Core 2 Duo & Intel GMA 4500 Series graphics, as well as my all-in-one 2016 Lenovo with an i5 7500 / Intel HD Graphics 630.
How’s that C2D holding up and performing with the BSD?
'mport search drm-kmod' finds nothing, this is not FreeBSD. The change of resolution at 05:40 suggests, to me, that a suitable graphics driver has been chosen by Gary.

BSD is always problem and unfortunately BSD people are quite rude.
If you find being shown the manual/documentation with a pinch of do your own research/googling rude, then yeah. If not I'm sorry you can't across som bad apple. In general the community is not rude in BSD Land.
