    Very enjoyable video. Even though bare-metal installs can be more frustrating for you, I think many viewers appreciate them more than virtual machine installs. Even when the installation is not successful, it is instructive to see what you went through. Your BSD videos are great. Thank you.

    Thanks for this video. I take it as a challenge! FreeBSD is my daily driver on my thinkpad. I have a Dell laptop laying around with some version of linux, I forget which, so I'm going to try Midnight BSD on it and see how it goes for me. Cheers!

    Please if you have a negative experience post it as you have done this video. If i had gone into testing the lastest midnightBSD and it did not match your experience despite being on similar hardware it would have driven me mental.

    GaryH Tech did a video today and couldn't even get the GUI working. It also was not installed. I checked your previous installation video, and yes, it worked. There seems to be something wrong with this latest release.

      I asked Lucas Holt, the lead dev, and he was unaware of the missing package which was causing the issue and it was just a 64-bit problem....in the 32 but image it was there..... I guess it is just a mistake, but perhaps more testers are needed to catch potential problems...

    That is the kind of thing that scares me with GhostBSD. That is why I have put some automation to try to avoid these kinds of problems.

      Even the biggest of OS companies can release a problematic release, so for a project that may be stretched for time or eyes on the code etc then this can be understandable.

    Do a rant on WINE for FreeBSD, and all the drama that comes with it. IMO, the Chinese need to fork WINE and ignore all clean room policies, that'll show big tech. BUT I DIGRESS!!! As it stands, if you're using FreeBSD 14.0 Release, WINE has a bit of issue with winecfg (the upgrade string that you usually type in doesn't work as it complains about OS mismatch). Of course you could just use WINE 7, but that's no fun. Kingdom Hearts Melody of Memory is finally working on WINE 9 (As well as a whole slew of other apps), but natively from pkg, we only have access to versions 8, 9, and 9 devel... all of which winecfg is dead until addressed.

    I think I see a warning icon there in the Midori address bar. Maybe some problem with the cert authority files? (Every website is HTTPS these days, so you need those.)

    How are you, my friend? I had the same problems yesterday. I tried to download MidnightBSD 3.1.4, and the experience was bad, even though I downloaded it a long time ago on my device. Is this version I don’t know what’s in it? I have a question: Why do freebsd distributions not recognize automatic hardware like NomadBSD? And in the world, it is my favorite distribution on the desktop. It is excellent. I would like everyone to try it. Thank you for this excellent video.

      NomadBSD is an excellent OS, infact I'm currently making a video reviewing the latest release.....it's weird because it has switch to XFCE and it 'feels' different.... :-)

      @@RoboNuggie And I'm glad they did. My laptop has the worst touch-pad ever in that the buttons are part of the active surface and take too much effort to push, for the cursor to stay put on what you're clicking, prior desktop didn't support tapping the pad. XFCE doesn't have this problem, and it's not like I can just use my BT mouse lol... I like Nomad so much I bought it a fancy metal USB key to live on. It's always running virtually when I use Windows, i.e. free userspace ZFS for Windows, automatic snapshots to backup server, etc.

      When not in use, I reboot my laptop into Nomad, close the lid, and let it seed bittorrent/ipfs. I have every distro with a torrent, the popular ones keep my seed ratio up for downloading the lesser-known. I only do bt/ipfs on my Nomad stick, auto-starting always running.

    Given that you had to install the base system and then xorg and xfce by hand and still not have any apps - why not use standard freebsd?

    • @MichaelWilliams-lr4mb
      @MichaelWilliams-lr4mb 4 месяца назад

      Normally you wouldn't have to do that with MidnightBSD. It would do it for you. Something is wrong with the current version of MidnightBSD.

    • @RoboNuggie
      @RoboNuggie  4 месяца назад +2

      Because I was reviewing a system that offers the option to have a desktop installed.
      I didn't intend to manually install anything, it's that the script to install the desktop wasn't working.

      @@RoboNuggie GaryH had the same result in his RUclips article. Past versions of Midnight have resulted in working desktops out of the box. Hopefully a minor "dot release" will set things right again. Thanks again for your perseverance.

    Well, you got further than I did. 3.1.3 installer didn't install /usr so it was rather useless. 3.1.4, I can log in but like you, no desktop. Unlike you, mport does nothing, but there is /usr. If an installer can't install the package manager, well, I don't try fixing THAT. I wanted to try ravenports, but apparently not today.

      I’m coming over from Linux. There not being 100 different “flavors” is a plus in my book. Linux is such a mess that BSD really just needs to keep doing what it’s doing. Many people are growing tired of the nonsense surrounding Linux and are looking for an alternative.
