I traded my year old BMW X5 M Competition Ultimate for the new iX50 in January this year, despite the iX50 being over 100bhp down, (and almost 80mph) it is a brilliant car, I am well impressed with it. I also traded my gorgeous Mini Cooper S for the new BMW 223i in April this year, I have an array of solar panels and storage batteries and have now driven for 6 months at nil cost for charging, I am well pleased. Coming up to 75 years of age and presently awaiting a hip replacement and find the two cars reasonably easy to climb in and out of.
For highway speeds weight is almost irrelevant for range in EVs. There are several tests that have been done that demonstrate this. Weight affects acceleration a lot and city efficiency where you are stopping and starting often.
Most people that are arguing about tesla etc etc. Majority of them not even buying evs. Or can't afford them. I can never understand why they put so much energy into these conversations.

Hey Sam, well done. I'm a big fan of the BMW iX50 and plan to buy one! Here’s some feedback: the backup lights are required by USA law when the lift back is raised; did you really SHED A TEAR on the front seat?; the side mirror is a touch too small for such a LONG EV; the Bimmer’s fit and finish blow Tesla away!; and Musk lied about T3 and Tesla Y range. The Y gets 220 on a good day, not 330 as advertised; the iX50 gets 330 consistently!!

I have both Tesla 3 and BMW iX. Love them both. I find the programming menus and intuitiveness of the 3 is better. BMW complex and many settings not linked to your profile. the 3 sets up car setting to your profile from your mobile on entry. Also, once you get into the depth of what can be adjusted in the BMW, it is not as flexible as I would have hoped.
Lyric is a joke compared to the Ix. I test drove both and in every way imaginable, the Ix blew the doors off the lyric. Also, I went to 3 different lyric dealerships and they all said 6-9 month wait time. Went to BMW and each dealer I went to have 3-4 cars available in every color and style imaginable. Cadillac needs to get its act together
@@swisstrader I don't think it was meant to be a driver's vehicle by all account. I gave up on my lyriq preorder after waiting almost a year. GM is a joke with offering vaporware. Also more colors are being offered for 2023/24 iirc but also geared towards higher price with options

I wish the reviewers around the interweb would stop repeating each other. The 'hood' can be opened by the user without issue. There's not much to see under there, and there is no storage. But it does house the AGM battery;
A great review, Thank you. I own both Tesla Model S and BMW IX. I truly enjoy driving the BMW. Once I read somewhere that Tesal was a pioneer in EVs but once the other car manufacturers catch up on technology, they will prevail Tesla in terms of technology, comfort and luxury. BMW proved the statement to be true. My Tesla now looks like a basic, economy car compared to IX. On a separate note, I cannot understand why people compare IX with Model Y. BMW IX (even though not comparable) should be compared to Model X and not Model Y. Model Y is a much smaller car compared to BMW IX. A note on Parking assist, it is obvious that parking assist is for places that you have difficulty to park, such as in a bay between two other cars or a parallel parking (again between two cars) on the street. Why would you need to use it in an empty car park? Finally, on Augmented reality, you did not mention that the actual camera view can be also projected on your front monitor and not only on the main monitor. I like to have it on my front monitor as it does not distract me and I can also use the main monitor for other purposes. Cheers
I wish they could have mounted the wiper under the rear spoiler instead of mounted on the hatch. It takes away from the luxury looks and would have given it more aerodynamic. I see the rear wipers on other cars mounted on the hatch and there broken and hanging down.
You can open the hood... There are two pull cords that need to be pulled, one on the driver side, one on the passenger side. They don't want you to open the hood since there's nothing there that you should be touching or modifying. This isn't lighter than an X5; the x5 is 400-800lbs lighter. Maybe you mean the chassis weight? Once you consider the battery, EVs are much heavier than comparable ICEVs; regardless of how much carbon fiber and aluminum they use. Drag coefficient has nothing to do with the size of the vehicle; it has to do with the shape. The i8 has higher drag because it has an engine that needs to breathe and requires more air vents, it's a sports car that wants a good bit of downforce, and BMW didn't have to be so strict on aero to improve its range since it's a PHEV.

I have i-pace, but personally I love Tesla for 3 things: No model year (they change something in their cars every month). Car manufacturing technology, especially model 3 and Y (lightweight, spacious, safe, many horsepower). Software updates that improve hardware (faster acceleration, better ABS working, better cooling algorithms, new system UI etc.). Why I wouldn't buy tesla: Expensive spare parts, wait 2-4 weeks for it to arrive. Questionable reliability, exterior and interior poor quality. Lack of service (where I live). Rough suspension. All controls through the screen.
Can't agree more. Coming from Tesla model 3 to bmw ix, I feel like i am in an actual luxury vehicle which is comfortable and offers all the technology I need. Drive assist is very very good.
@@peterwho9380 Ottawa rates are approximately between $.10 and $.12 per kwh depending on the time of day it charges. The battery is approx 100kwh so it costs roughly $10 to $12 for a full charge at home. You can drive approx 400km depending on many factors. So that boils down to $3.00 for 100 km 🥳 much better than $25.00 in gas to propel an X5 xDrive 50 for 100 km.
Think this looks like the future, but the rear end is not "my favorite part" of the design. The wide black ribbons wrapping the rear are so ugly I can't even believe that anyone would bother talking about the bad faux front grilles (the FFG's lol). Could have been amazing, IMO. Lot's of good stuff, but....
The charging infrastructure for anything non Tesla is pretty much crap… Tesla, allowing they’re supercharging system open to other EV’s is going to be a godsend.
Tried a test drive in one after driving a Y for a while. Found the whole approach too much bling. Steering way to light in comparison to the Y as well. I also have a BMW 4 3.5l convertible which drives much better. I ended up ordering a Tesla Y Performance from their Berlin factory and saved €50k in the process. Question, was the video a paid promotion? Sure felt like it.
You asked “why the Tesla?”. For me the biggest reason that I got a Tesla Model 3 Performance was because of Performance. While the BMW I4 and the upcoming Kia EV6 GT will be reasonably fast for the segment they won’t come close to even the Model 3 Performance for acceleration. All of the other cars are just so heavy and inefficient. The only thing that is inefficient in my Tesla are the 20” UberHeavy wheels 🛞. I am swapping those out for lightweight wheels and tires this weekend. The current 0-60 mph is 3.04 with rollout and 1/4 mile is 11.43 @ 117+ mph. For the price no other EV can touch that. Once I get the lighter wheels I hope to get below 3.0 seconds 0-60 mph and around 11.30 for the 1/4 mile. Hard to beat that for $59k especially since it is worth $65k now.
Acceleration like that is cool and everything but when you've been to jail about six times for criminal speeding I decided to say fuck them fast cars lol I just drive in accord 2.0 turbo fast enough sounds good fun to drive and looks hella sexy lol. And my buddy about to BMW like in this video for luxury not speed to each his own but I'm glad you like your car
@@honda116969 you are right. I live in North Carolina where we have 4 Dragstrips within 1 hour of us. Tons of fun and only $20-$30 to run all day. All 4 of our tracks have Superchargers right next to the tracks too. We are really lucky in that respect.
@@isserdigan2835 interior is simple , but rest assured that other brands interior will be outdated because they constantly change materials which would also mean your model will lose value much faster . The simplistic route that Tesla went with also is beneficial for consumers as your interior won’t be outdated in their lineup which also will allow your vehicle to hold its value better . But lucky for you you can spend an additional 15-20k to get a extremely luxurious interior from the competition.

I tried few electric cars from Mercedes/Tesla/Kia and others… after trying the IX 50, i didn’t feel the answer from BMW on confort/finishes/speed. Really strange feeling, it’s like they found a good looking car from outside but inside and the engine are so low… for a 120K€ version (minimum without options), i think it is not a good investissment.
BMW’s iX M60 is over 10 years ahead of EV technology compare to Tesla who is just getting started in EVs.😊 Model iX M60 is better & bigger then Tesla’s Model Y.😊 Both cars have no exhaust pipes.

The ix is the most ugly car I have ever seen ! I bought ix m60 and oh my god the chairs were uncomfortable, screen barely working and the horn was stuck. Had to sell it in 2 weeks and bought a etron, way better, 10000000 more good looking, faster, more comfortable chairs, comfortable driving, more luxury and the horn was working

The big grilled 4 series are also extremely popular. The actual market for these cars don’t necessarily align with the critics, the critics buy much different vehicles.
Remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.. The people in this market are looking at the following alternatives: BMW X5 xDrive 50, fully loaded for $110k CAD plus $5k gas per year, Mercedes GLE AMG 53 for $120k plus $5k gas per year, Range Rover Sport .. etc and none of those compare to the power of the iX, nor do they have a sound system comparable to the Bowers&Wilkins 20 speaker 1250 watt masterpiece (much better than the Mercedes Burmester). So some people see this iX as a good deal, a question of perspective as in many things in life!

In the U.K. they have removed the option of lumbar support for the front passenger seat. This I found essential.

Test drove it. It the torque plateaus early. So by 80 there is barely the pull you expect from an Electric car. Short range too. Less than 300 miles.

Took 25 minutes (over 2/3rds of the video) to get to the actual driving, the only thing that matters. Car reviews in 2022. I hate the future.

I tried few electric cars from Mercedes/Tesla/Kia and others… after trying the IX 50, i didn’t feel the answer from BMW on confort/finishes/speed.
Really strange feeling, it’s like they found a good looking car from outside but inside and the engine are so low… for a 120K€ version (minimum without options), i think it is not a good investissment.
BMW’s iX M60 is over 10 years ahead of EV technology compare to Tesla who is just getting started in EVs.😊 Model iX M60 is better & bigger then Tesla’s Model Y.😊 Both cars have no exhaust pipes.

The ix is the most ugly car I have ever seen ! I bought ix m60 and oh my god the chairs were uncomfortable, screen barely working and the horn was stuck. Had to sell it in 2 weeks and bought a etron, way better, 10000000 more good looking, faster, more comfortable chairs, comfortable driving, more luxury and the horn was working
Damn da horn wasn’t working. Pretty sure that was the car that you had’s problem. I agree that it is ugly in my opinion. I have been in a bmw and they do not have the most comfortable chairs. Etron is better in my opinion. Better looking and better interior. Overall I like Audi’s design better than bmw in my opinion

Any particular reason why you hate tesla and impose your subjective opinion? Also, why do you say iX is model Y competitor because that would be BMW X3, this one, just like X5 is Model X competitor. I mean, you can literally buy 2 model Ys for the price of similar equipped iX. Model X is more close to the price and the same size but that one is different story. 2022 long range model X will smoke iX 60 for almost 50% less money. Very good video production, but very poor and subjective journalism, and poorly informed too. I wish you to get better over time.

The big grilled 4 series are also extremely popular. The actual market for these cars don’t necessarily align with the critics, the critics buy much different vehicles.

Remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.. The people in this market are looking at the following alternatives: BMW X5 xDrive 50, fully loaded for $110k CAD plus $5k gas per year, Mercedes GLE AMG 53 for $120k plus $5k gas per year, Range Rover Sport .. etc and none of those compare to the power of the iX, nor do they have a sound system comparable to the Bowers&Wilkins 20 speaker 1250 watt masterpiece (much better than the Mercedes Burmester). So some people see this iX as a good deal, a question of perspective as in many things in life!
It’s very silly to cool this hideous just for a grill. For one week people have stared at this and broke their necks.

Point is? 4.0 0-60 is not fast enough for a luxury SUV? The Tesla does not ride like this vehicle, It is not quiet as this vehicle and the iX has a slightly longer real world range of and it is 25k less. Better build quality, cheaper insurance.. you want more?
