  • NASCAR has a very long history of "innovators", dating back as far as the start of the sport itself. But, typically they required an awful lot of engineering know how that was beyond most of the garage area's capabilities even if they knew what was done to soup up the car.
    The 1997 winston all-star race winning T-rex car is an exception, however. Utilizing then-advanced aerodynamic theory and applying it a 3400-pound Stock car. The best part of it was, it didn't break any rules and would've been within capabilities of the other teams, just nobody really thought to do it yet.
    The apex predator driven by Jeff gordon, thought up by Ray evernham, Rex Stumpf, and 120 other fine folks to create the best competition racing car in the field that day. This is the story of Car #2429. This is the story, Of T-rex.
    Music by Speedworld and Rom di Prisco.

    Those late-90s cars looked absolutely beautiful. Ricky Rudd's Tide Ford and Terry Labonte's Kellogg's Chevy are gorgeous.

      Thank you so much! That’s huge praise. I’m very glad I could bring such fond memories back.
      Yeah, it’s insane what can be thought up by just having a slightly different outside the box look at a car package.
      Right now I’m mostly just covering driver history, but I am considering doing another car tech/engineering type video just like this one very soon. I hope you stick around for that as well!

    Although I GET WHY Nascar did what they did to this car (prevent the innovation domination as seen in F1), they shouldnt have completely outlawed it…

    • @ClumsyCardboard
      @ClumsyCardboard  Год назад

      It was initially much more reactionary than logical. I think that’s why the break down that they gave to Rex was especially helpful to them. But, T-Rex was going to come back one way or another anyway.

      You're absolutely right. I could've, and should've, visualized them a little better. Hopefully it didn't detract from the video too much!

    Ya know Ray and the guys built a car that was within the rules, and went out and whipped everybody butt. Anyone of the other teams could of done the same with their cars. They just didn't put in the extra effort or think a little outside of the box. Kinda why we have the cookie cutter boring NASCAR race cars of today. Roadracer cars that also race on ovals. NASCAR took away the inovations that made the sport so popular. To me, NASCAR is its own worst enema......er.....enemy.

      Oh no doubt. It was to cover the asses of the other teams who were deep into that level of R&D.

      The best innovations are the most subtle. Some are so subtle, it stumps other teams.

      Lord knows Ray definitely did, and encouraged a lot of other Hendrick projects to “innovate” over the years. Even before then

      Indycar does. That’s why I used a picture as an example. There was a LOT of clever “innovating” in other motorsports too. I am well aware NASCAR mandates naturally aspirated engines.
