    Many younger folks may not realize that for an extended time, these kinds of performances were the norm for Jeff Gordon. He dominated the sport for an extended time in a way that was seen by only a few others in the history of NASCAR...and the simple fact is that if they never implemented the Chase, Jeff would have ended his career with 7 titles.

    Love the confidence Gordon has in his car in that in-car interview @6:30. He didn't care if he had to go all the way to the back to make another charge. He was so proud to put on a show with that machine.

    if my life depended on it and I had to pick a driver to win a race Gordon would be the guy , he drove the absolute wheels off a car every time he got in it .

    Quite possibly Ray Evernham's finest hour. He took a page from Smokey Yunick's book and made bending the rules into a fucking art form. The best part is that he passed it on to his protoge, Chad Knaus.

    i wish Nascar allowed this version of the car to come back during Jeff Gordon's final days of his career as a throwback paint to that year. it would of been a wonderful sight to see that cross the finish line with him also i wish Nascar brought back the tech fact because that segment even in 1997 was really informentive for fans to learn more about racing and how the race cars worked.

    Ray was saying the main thing was they put soft springs in the front an ran the back of the car high which I guess probably made the front stick like glue and if the front tracs good the rear will follow may be I sure love to know exactly why and what they banned this car for dominance perhaps....who knows it was exciting reminiscent if the old days watching that car come thru the field u Jeff can drive....love to see a video on T Rex and also excactly how much and how many technical rules these teams have to comply with to get on the race track hey I know that old phrase givin an inch and they take a mile is what always happens and that's why they have to be so struck and tight but Jeeze....I remember seeing guys doing bondo work right at the track because they did comply with stuff...oh well....

      I kind of agree with you. But at the same time some of these teams already have such a monetary/technological advantage to start with you have keep the playing field even somehow. Similar to the salary cap in football.

      Staying with Hendrick cost him though late in his career; he just wasn't afforded the quality equipment or personnel that JJ was getting.

      Jimmy only has 7 championships because of the new points format. If NASCAR would have stayed with the original points format Jeff would have 7 championships.

    • @johnboy4025
      @johnboy4025 7 лет назад +7

      Disagree. I think Jeff was great at Hendrick start to finish. But when you have have Rick Hendrick AND Jeff Gordon contributing to your car... Yeah you are going to be good! Of course I do think that adding Jimmie hurt Jeff more than anything. If I had a time machine I would tell him not to hire Jimmie! Chase or no, Jeff would have won more were there no Jimmie

    • @mike4auburn91
      @mike4auburn91 7 лет назад +1

      Aaron Sulwer, we don't know that. If the chase didn't exist, the results could have been the same, or not. They would have raced differently.

      Thezerofreeze because it was way better than the other cars on the track. If HMS was allowed to run that style chassis after that race, they probably would have swept the season.

    I don't understand the reason why they ban this car....these guys work there butts of to do the right thing...was it because they didn't want to hear the other teams bitch and moan about getting whooped...by a really good team that's what they get paid for....there's way too much pre race inspection when it takes two or three days to tech the cars and pass them and get them quote on quote legal to race how much money is that costing the teams and what is the rule book 200 pages....I miss the old days when the cars weren't playing follow the leader riding around nose to tail that's boring no body has any extra power to pull out and draft if they do their car gets disqualified...I think and don't have damn complaint about any rule that has anything to do with safety of the drivers or spectators or crew but Jeeze know wonder its boring I love superspeedways it my forte and the thing that drew me to be a NASCAR fan in the mid to late 70s....pits stops used to be the most exciting part for those of us who know racing and love it most of the people don't know how impressive it is for a car to run flat out for 500 mile and go 180plus miles per hour and make it last for that distance.....THANKS

  • @dparker6790
    @dparker6790 7 лет назад +3

    The reason that car was so good was because the body of the car was tilted for more downforce so he could get in the gas sooner and it was illegal because the chassi wasn't modified at all

      Nascar changed the rules because of that car. So if it was illegal, then why change the rules?

    • @chakroc
      @chakroc Год назад +1

      The car was NOT illegal at the time of the race. Everything on that car was was within NASCAR's rules. After the race, NASCAR looked at the car, and changed the rules to make what was on it illegal. Why...maybe because NASCAR knew if none of the other teams knew what they had found, they wouldn't be able to compete with the 24, and Jeff would dominate even more than they already were at the time.
