Many younger folks may not realize that for an extended time, these kinds of performances were the norm for Jeff Gordon. He dominated the sport for an extended time in a way that was seen by only a few others in the history of NASCAR...and the simple fact is that if they never implemented the Chase, Jeff would have ended his career with 7 titles.
Love the confidence Gordon has in his car in that in-car interview @6:30. He didn't care if he had to go all the way to the back to make another charge. He was so proud to put on a show with that machine.
if my life depended on it and I had to pick a driver to win a race Gordon would be the guy , he drove the absolute wheels off a car every time he got in it .
God, I always loved Eli Gold. Sure do miss him, Ken Squire, Bob Jenkins, and of course, Ned, Benny, and Buddy Baker. What a great time to be a race fan. WHAT AN ERA. "This was only a test. Had it been a real emergency, we would have lapped the field."- Eli Gold
Quite possibly Ray Evernham's finest hour. He took a page from Smokey Yunick's book and made bending the rules into a fucking art form. The best part is that he passed it on to his protoge, Chad Knaus.
i wish Nascar allowed this version of the car to come back during Jeff Gordon's final days of his career as a throwback paint to that year. it would of been a wonderful sight to see that cross the finish line with him also i wish Nascar brought back the tech fact because that segment even in 1997 was really informentive for fans to learn more about racing and how the race cars worked.
Ray was saying the main thing was they put soft springs in the front an ran the back of the car high which I guess probably made the front stick like glue and if the front tracs good the rear will follow may be I sure love to know exactly why and what they banned this car for dominance perhaps....who knows it was exciting reminiscent if the old days watching that car come thru the field u Jeff can drive....love to see a video on T Rex and also excactly how much and how many technical rules these teams have to comply with to get on the race track hey I know that old phrase givin an inch and they take a mile is what always happens and that's why they have to be so struck and tight but Jeeze....I remember seeing guys doing bondo work right at the track because they did comply with stuff...oh well....
Jimmie may have 4... But he never dominated it like Jeff did... TWICE!!! And did Jimmie ever get to drive a car with at T-Rex on it?... I didn't think so!
I kind of agree with you. But at the same time some of these teams already have such a monetary/technological advantage to start with you have keep the playing field even somehow. Similar to the salary cap in football.
Jimmy only has 7 championships because of the new points format. If NASCAR would have stayed with the original points format Jeff would have 7 championships.
Disagree. I think Jeff was great at Hendrick start to finish. But when you have have Rick Hendrick AND Jeff Gordon contributing to your car... Yeah you are going to be good! Of course I do think that adding Jimmie hurt Jeff more than anything. If I had a time machine I would tell him not to hire Jimmie! Chase or no, Jeff would have won more were there no Jimmie
Thezerofreeze because it was way better than the other cars on the track. If HMS was allowed to run that style chassis after that race, they probably would have swept the season.
Ryan Morris nothing on the car was illegal. It passed everything in the inspection. At Hendricks museum its called the non illegal illegal car. Car was perfectly legal, it was just so fast.
My favorite driver one of my favorite movies awesome, that was such bs they built one of best and fastest car by the book all the money and work to make that car perfect and only to make it a show peice, jeff you and car are to good none of the other cars and drivers can compete with you so were going to have to take some of your perks
I don't understand the reason why they ban this car....these guys work there butts of to do the right thing...was it because they didn't want to hear the other teams bitch and moan about getting whooped...by a really good team that's what they get paid for....there's way too much pre race inspection when it takes two or three days to tech the cars and pass them and get them quote on quote legal to race how much money is that costing the teams and what is the rule book 200 pages....I miss the old days when the cars weren't playing follow the leader riding around nose to tail that's boring no body has any extra power to pull out and draft if they do their car gets disqualified...I think and don't have damn complaint about any rule that has anything to do with safety of the drivers or spectators or crew but Jeeze know wonder its boring I love superspeedways it my forte and the thing that drew me to be a NASCAR fan in the mid to late 70s....pits stops used to be the most exciting part for those of us who know racing and love it most of the people don't know how impressive it is for a car to run flat out for 500 mile and go 180plus miles per hour and make it last for that distance.....THANKS
Kellie Nicole Brooks Schettino The car was legal, but its mere existence made NASCAR look like damn fools because it exploited every grey area there was in the rulebook.
Didnt like Gordon(or his team) but isnt the t-rex the point of racing? Punish a team for being smarter? Make new rules to ban a car just doesn't seem right, it passed inspection didnt it?!
The reason that car was so good was because the body of the car was tilted for more downforce so he could get in the gas sooner and it was illegal because the chassi wasn't modified at all
The car was NOT illegal at the time of the race. Everything on that car was was within NASCAR's rules. After the race, NASCAR looked at the car, and changed the rules to make what was on it illegal. Why...maybe because NASCAR knew if none of the other teams knew what they had found, they wouldn't be able to compete with the 24, and Jeff would dominate even more than they already were at the time.
5 years old sitting on the old concrete seats on the backstretch with dad, still got the Trex t shirt great night to be a Gordon fan
Nicholas Bollinger must have been
Love the confidence Gordon has in his car in that in-car interview @6:30. He didn't care if he had to go all the way to the back to make another charge. He was so proud to put on a show with that machine.
if my life depended on it and I had to pick a driver to win a race Gordon would be the guy , he drove the absolute wheels off a car every time he got in it .
Beautiful car. Love watch all Jeff Gordon Racing. Biggest Fan.
Listen how freaking awesome they sound !!!! Dam I miss those days great drivers great cars great racing just a memory now change sucks lol
THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT MEMORIES JEFF.
When Matt Yokum was interviewing Jeff after that one segment, Jeff had a smirk on his face like he knew something we didn’t. Lol.
Oh yeah, he knew there wasn't anyone that could touch him in that car
He said NASCAR said don't bring it back, everyone knows. It's in a great book about NASCAR Cheating by the same title
So awesome to watch racing where they had stable enough cars to actually battle and pass someone.
Jeff drove the final segment on easy mode.
Remember that. T rex was one bad ass hot rod. Gordon was fearless driving that beast
Man I miss good broadcasting like those legends
Quite possibly Ray Evernham's finest hour. He took a page from Smokey Yunick's book and made bending the rules into a fucking art form. The best part is that he passed it on to his protoge, Chad Knaus.
JG.......one of the BEST.........EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome to hear Benny Parsons again.
I think I might have been mistaken and it's Buddy Baker. Who too is great to hear!
i wish Nascar allowed this version of the car to come back during Jeff Gordon's final days of his career as a throwback paint to that year. it would of been a wonderful sight to see that cross the finish line with him also i wish Nascar brought back the tech fact because that segment even in 1997 was really informentive for fans to learn more about racing and how the race cars worked.
Grammar books are real informative, too.
I love that car
So did Jeff, haha
1970: NASCAR bans the winged warriors because they're too good
1997: NASCAR bans the T-Rex because it's too good
That car was fucking built to perfection. I remember being 6 years old watching this race.
Ray was saying the main thing was they put soft springs in the front an ran the back of the car high which I guess probably made the front stick like glue and if the front tracs good the rear will follow may be I sure love to know exactly why and what they banned this car for dominance perhaps....who knows it was exciting reminiscent if the old days watching that car come thru the field u Jeff can drive....love to see a video on T Rex and also excactly how much and how many technical rules these teams have to comply with to get on the race track hey I know that old phrase givin an inch and they take a mile is what always happens and that's why they have to be so struck and tight but Jeeze....I remember seeing guys doing bondo work right at the track because they did comply with stuff...oh well....
the other cars were slowing him down once he got the lead he was unstoppable like a real trex
They should remake this car for dicast car "race win" addition with the confetti
My sentiments exactly
Jimmie may have 4... But he never dominated it like Jeff did... TWICE!!! And did Jimmie ever get to drive a car with at T-Rex on it?... I didn't think so!
jeff gordon also has over 6 wins at darlington
Dont ever compare that no talent hack johnson to dale petty or jeff!
Gordon had the 98 and 09 AS races won too. Just didn’t work out for different reasons lol
I miss all the old sponsers
This is why NASCAR sucks today. They take out the engineering that makes faster cars rather then cookie cutter shit.
I kind of agree with you. But at the same time some of these teams already have such a monetary/technological advantage to start with you have keep the playing field even somehow. Similar to the salary cap in football.
Jimmy Spencer in the smokin Joe 23.lol. Nascar was so much more enjoyable back then.
Jeff Gordon is the "best" even though Jimmie did win 7 championships. If it wasn't for Jeff Jimmie wouldn't have stood a chance..lol
stitch16261 And Think If Jeff never got with Rick Hendrick
Staying with Hendrick cost him though late in his career; he just wasn't afforded the quality equipment or personnel that JJ was getting.
Aaron Sulwer, we don't know that. If the chase didn't exist, the results could have been the same, or not. They would have raced differently.
When a car comes from that far back and is that dominate, you can bet eyebrows are raised.
I dont understand why they banned this chassis after one race
Thezerofreeze because it was way better than the other cars on the track. If HMS was allowed to run that style chassis after that race, they probably would have swept the season.
Michael Dillon Harrison but it could've been just ok at some other tracks
Because the car was illegal..that is why. Believe what you want.
I’m a Gordon fan and I was only born when this race ran but I can say that this car was illegal as fuck
Ryan Morris nothing on the car was illegal. It passed everything in the inspection. At Hendricks museum its called the non illegal illegal car. Car was perfectly legal, it was just so fast.
Even in Gordon's worst season, he still finished 14th and that was his rookie season. Utterly decimation
Nascar really screwed Gordon with this car , the field should have to figure out how to beat that car and not tell Gordon not to bring it back !!
7:30 so that's why Knaus uses the term "Panhard bar" instead of trackbar
Panhard Bar comes from Northeast modified terminology, Where Ray is from... the lingo just moved south and caught on is all lol...
imagine if he raced that car again in future races....
I would like to see the lap time's and compare them to Dale Jr car in 2000 when he blew everyone away !
I wonder what "Elsie" was an acrynom for??
Ray Evernham decided to emulate his hero Smokey Yunick and just exploit every gray area
What was wrong with the car???
Does anyone know??
When Nascar was Nascar!
Cool! : D
My favorite driver one of my favorite movies awesome, that was such bs they built one of best and fastest car by the book all the money and work to make that car perfect and only to make it a show peice, jeff you and car are to good none of the other cars and drivers can compete with you so were going to have to take some of your perks
And it sure isn’t a dinosaur 😂 😂
T Rex was banned after this race.
Can't do anything anymore a piece of tape gets you disqualified!!! They have penalized the best people in the sport!!! 2022
They should’ve kept it quiet lol
They did nothing wrong and Big Bill France said change it. A true boss. He's missed.
What race was this?
Back when aero wasn't so prevalent
@MetalMastodon parity
It was 406 cid. Everyone else was 358 cid
😂Cheating car thanks Ray
Loose is fast
CHEATERS PLAIN AND SIMPLE!
Hope everyone learned something.... Keep your mouth shut...... Especially when Southern dictators have a monopoly over your line of employment
Typical Hendrick. Cheating all the way.
Didnt like Gordon(or his team) but isnt the t-rex the point of racing? Punish a team for being smarter? Make new rules to ban a car just doesn't seem right, it passed inspection didnt it?!
The reason that car was so good was because the body of the car was tilted for more downforce so he could get in the gas sooner and it was illegal because the chassi wasn't modified at all
Dr Pepper there was alot more done to it than just the body
Dumbfucks....they built the car to the rulebook....wow. maybe research shit before you accuse
Nascar changed the rules because of that car. So if it was illegal, then why change the rules?
The car was NOT illegal at the time of the race. Everything on that car was was within NASCAR's rules. After the race, NASCAR looked at the car, and changed the rules to make what was on it illegal.
