This video shows you how to replace the camshaft timing chain guide rail in a 2002 Boxster S 986 M96 engine. We did it with the engine in the car! That's right, no engine removal required. Should also be very similar for Cayman and 911 models!

This will be useful for a lot of DIYers. Thanks for the video!
Seems like if you put the cams with celenoid non-released, it will be easier to put it back and adjust.
+Anil I hope so!
I think if you pay attention to the alignment while it’s out and before releasing tension it would be easier outside the engine before reinstalling
Edit: After making part 2 I agree! Also should tension it with the cams in to avoid those gears touching the variocam!
@@HelpMeDIY Can't wait to see part 2 :)
@@Anil-bg5se Making the Member's Only version public right now!
@@HelpMeDIY Awesome, really appreciate it! These days, I am building a tow hitch behind my boxster to attach a bike rack without drilling anything on the car. I will share the video of how I made it once it is finished in case you want to make for yourself and create a video of it.
@@Anil-bg5se sounds fun! Make a detailed enough video and I’ll post it for you on the channel if you want
Ugh, I feel your pain. I think in a perfect world you pull the engine in the fall and do all of these maintenance issues over the course of the winter. This video wore me out, I can't imagine how you felt actually doing the work. I'm gonna need a break before part 2. Thanks for all of your videos.
+Nor Nibres haha you should try the full length version 😂
Tip for special tool 9632 variocam tensioner. After much hunting around I discovered that the Traxxas toe link part #8638 for RC cars is ideal for the job. One end is 5mm LH thread and the other is 5mm RH, with a few tweaks you can use this to relieve the tension before removing the cams. Cost less than AUD$20 :)
Great!
Awesome video! I remember this was a pita to do. Especially lining them up like you guys dealt with. When we had it out we went ahead and installed some Schrick Hydraulic Sport Camshafts. Man it really screams now.
+Brian Sturgill thanks man! I hadn’t even known there were aftermarket cams available until right now 😳🤯
@HelpMeDIY just completed this job on my Boxster thanks to your careful video (and member only version.) Was one of the hardest jobs I’ve done on a car and have you to thank for making that job possible!
+Jordan Miller love to hear it! And thanks for being a member ❤️
I'll be doing this in the winter. Thx for taking the time to do this
+John Kaufmann you’re welcome! 🍻
you both have good on camera chemistry you both should link up and make more videos together
+Peanut Man thanks! We got along really well for virtual strangers 😆
I'm not to the end, a very nice collaboration. Keep on keeping on.
+Reinhardt Wildschut thank you, will do!
Just was watching and with the cams out instead of trying to put the tensioner assembly in from the front side, I noticed that inserting them from the backside would be easier...of course if the cams on in the block that is not an option...just an observation. Great share! Thanks!!
+ED Justice thanks! We tried both directions 😂
I love having two versions. For the more complicated projects I want to see the uncut version of every camera angle. I don't mind paying for the content.
+My Ferrari 360 great feedback, thanks! That’s going to be my model moving forward I think.
Once you do it the next time becomes easier and the hardtop conversion looks really nice on his Boxster too.
+@warrenlucier5796 yes, first time is always the hardest! 🍻
Very instructive, how to do it and how not to do it. This is a very good practice recording. Thank you. 👍🏽
+Ab Tappy you’re welcome 🍻
I see the Cruzan bracelet VI, thanks for the video.
+The Texas Oiler I don’t know what that means, but you’re welcome! 😆
@@HelpMeDIY Your buddy has been to St. Croix that's where he got his bracelet from the cruzan hook.
@@TheTexasOiler ohhhh gotcha 😆
Awesome thanks! Man those green cap rubber covers really scary if they fall inside the casing. Lol
+X1area51 II I think it would be very hard to get one inside the casing part the cams!
Been anxiously waiting for this video. Is this a 5-chain or 3-chain motor ?
+Harman Gill 5-chain
Great video! Very cool to watch even though I have a 987.1 and found your channel through that.
Quick question, what was going on with the timing marks on the cam sprockets? Was it okay? Did the cams go back in at the same position, even thought you thought you adjusted the chain? Is the exciting conclusion in Day 2?!
Thanks!
+JimmyTomes thanks!
Yes it was ok. I explain it in Day 2. Coming soon!
What is the acceptance value for cam deviations?
Thankyou for the upload..
+/- 6
what's up bro it's your boy from matthews, nc with the 987 boxster
+Peanut Man hello neighbor!
I found it much easier to remove the cam covers by removing the spark plug tubes first.
E = EIN meaning in.
A = AUS meaning out.
+Randy Fleet thanks for the German! Makes sense 🍻
Thanks for the video - question, are the rails on the cam chain the ones that wear more rather than the lower chain ramps? if you had an engine out would you replace the lower ramps also or just the pair up top?
+Austin yes that’s correct, the ones we replaced seem to wear the most. And yes, if I had the engine out those other rails would get replaced as well.
Can you replace the lower ones with out pulling the engine?
Sold my boxster yesterday, I'm buying a 997 Turbo. Hope you buy one too so I get some how to videos :D :D
+TheXbaT well it sounds like you need to get a second one and donate it to the channel. For science 😁
@@HelpMeDIY Haha, The bank already owns mine, so I don't think they want another one.
How many miles did your car have on it. How long typically should these plastic guide rails last on a well taken care of non tracked 997.1 turbo Mezger? Thx
+T B I don’t remember how many miles… thought he mentioned that in the video though. Maybe not. I think they start deteriorating around 60k in my limited experience.
Understanding that prices will vary throughout the country, what would be a reasonable or typical price for this service at a dealership or independent shop?
I was quoted ~$3000 for this job. It’s usually billed as an engine out procedure so it’s quite pricey. There’s the added complication that if the chain has worn through the pads and damaged the variocam unit then that needs to be replaced as well. Those are ~$1200 a piece, the solenoids can fail as well and they’re ~$200.
@@stephenknoop182 $3000 per side? Or 3k for both sides, with additional costs if the solenoids or units need to be replaced? I am nearing having to do this job and was going to do both solenoids as a “while you’re in there” sort of thing. Do the units fail often as well or no?
@@poormansporsche744 the price I was quoted was around $3000, primarily for labor. The complete actuators are are ~$1500 a piece on top of that if they’re bad, which is what you’ll have to replace if the chain has worn through the pads and damaged the actuator. The solenoids themselves are pricey but at least lower in cost at ~$300 a piece. They can fail but as far as I know they’re not a maintenance item like the guides are.
Did this car have the coffee can rattle at start up before the replacement of the chain guides?
+keith tannenbaum no, replacing the tensioner solved that just like it did for my car
l.replaced the tensioners on my 996 and it still rattles only on cold start. ? any ideas. pls 🙏
Did Porsche improve the quality of the chain guides in later engines? Considering buying a Boxster S, wanting to find out what I am getting into. Thanks
+@teamground0229 I don’t think so. Slightly easier to replace though.
I'm thinking this is why they went to the 3 chain system and that simplified it.
hello did you post video 2 yet?
+Peanut Man give me a couple days
So is this a "regualar" service that needs to be done when the car hits a certain number of miles? What triggered this maintenance?
+David Vasta well, it is a common issue on these cars. For Stephen, the thing that triggered it was his cam deviation readings were at -8.4. For most people, they find the little bits of the reddish brown plastic in the oil filters. That’s why I know I need to change mine as well
@@HelpMeDIY Thank you. I have a 2007 Cayman with 138,000 and so far it's clean oil for me.
I’m looking for the timing kit tool needed for 2008 Porsche cayman S 3.4 . The links you have for the tools show unavailable, can you update it or send me the link or part number to the tool needed please!
+@luccyjayz thanks for the heads up. Links should be updated now
So did you film seated? Or is the leg better? That seems an epic job. Having done timing chains etc. I thought those were difficult. This is more like brain surgery.
+John Morgan as much as possible 😂. I’m in a boot now and can walk some
Is this something you'll have to do more than once?
+@mattymatt3654 I guess it depends on how long you own it. I doubt many people will.
How many miles were on this boxster at this service
+Nick shepherd I think we mentioned it somewhere, maybe the last part on the dash? I don’t remember now.
Did you find the tool to compress the solenoid
+Ken Maynard I did! But only because an awesome subscriber sent me one. Sorry that’s not too helpful for you I know.
Could you possibly have picture of it.
@@SHaDoRuN I can take one on Monday… contact me on FB or IG so I can send it
This is "regular" maintenance. I'm selling my Boxster!!!! ...and I just bought it.
+Gary Helms I hear ya
I have no words. Why in the heck was this engine designed with this rinky dink piece. Was there no other option than to use this perishable part in such a hard place to get to. The amount of labor and potential for timing issues after reassembly seems ridiculous.
What was the mileage for this car to need replacing those guide rails????
+Gary Helms well in their defense, I guess it’s better than the chain itself wearing and it’s a LOT easier to replace than the chain 😆
is this the same as a 996 911 engine m96
+George's Garage I don’t believe so but I’m not a Porsche engine expert
Same engine family and the casting # on the exhaust cam showed 996, but there will be differences due to engine displacement.
Now I see why a very reputable Indy here in San Diego will only do this by pulling the engine...
+roger long that’s only because they haven’t seen my video yet! I bet they will start doing it now… 😂
Steven has a lift, this is where you should be working on your car if possible
+bruce wayne Steven has a lift?
@@HelpMeDIY I assumed this was done at his home. I have a bendpak lift at my home. Priceless if you love to work on your own cars like I do.
@@brucewayne2773 oh, no, that’s my garage!
@@HelpMeDIY Great so you have a proper lift now. I saw a few videos where you still using those scissor lift
@@brucewayne2773 the Quick Jacks, yeah. Looks like you’ve missed my whole series on my garage build. You have some catching up to do! 😂
No, I don't want you to fail. That sounds terrible.
+Samuel Seager well good 😂
if you disconnect and remove that much stuff, frankly why not drop the entire engine and tranny?
much easier to work on it..
+911s73targa well, mostly because you’d still have to disconnect and remove all the same things AND remove the engine, which is more time/effort PLUS an extra time and expense of having to replace a lot of fluids.
