Thanks for making this video! It's what I needed to make up my mind and decide on ordering a XL GFC Platform Camper of my own! Really appreciate the detail/effort you put in. Thanks again!
Glad you found it helpful, their newer V2 models have an aluminum frame and improved hinge design too!
The old rig has come a long way. Excellent job. Happy Camping.
Yes it has! 🙌
Was good meeting you at Rigs and Coffee a few weeks ago. I'm the dude that showed you a pic of my old red 84' Yota pickup. Cheers man! - Grant
Awesome, good meeting you too man! 🍻
Just got mine last week! Awesome truck, spot, everything. If you are ever in northern Michigan come on by!
Thanks, we love Northern MI! Enjoy the GFC!
Like how streamlined the GFC setup is compared to before. I followed your article years ago for my Kodiak. Helped a ton. Recently, I ordered a GFC and will drive out to Montana to install it in June on a rock warrior tundra. I had no idea you got a GFC. Looks great!
Cool rig and great review. Thanks for that. Looks like a nice spot too for fishing and swimming.
Thanks!
I like the idea of pulling the fridge to make extra interior space at camp. I could see doing something similar other gear stored in Aluboxes or Wolfpacks so one could pull them and store them under the truck or in the backseats with a double cab. so one could have a double bunk sleeping platform.
That's exactly what we do, keep 2-3 wolfpacks behind the fridge and pull them along with the fridge when stopped for more than a night. Works great, though the ARB Elements fridge when fully loaded is 80-90lbs so takes some 💪🏽
@@takethetruck I’ve been playing Tetris on a RAM 2500 double cab build similar to yours with the pop up camper and rear drawers. I think there might be enough room to build a platform inside the cab to tie down a fridge as well. So many options to look through! I really like your simple build ideas.
Thanks for this video, I've been debating on the GFC or the AT Atlas and have been curious about how folks have been setting up their GFC. Good info - Thank you!
Thanks!
GFC #252 have a 1st gen Tacoma love you set up :) !
Thanks! 🤙🏼
first of all! thank you very much for all you're great sharing! question did buy you're or build you're back bumper (hitch) system? can you share info or a video of it? thanks again
Looks awesome!
Thanks! It's really a great setup 👍🏼
Very inspiring build! Using it as a starting point for my Tacoma GFC bed storage. If you don't mind me asking, how did y'all secure the single drawer into the rig? Use the d-rings? Friction? Large screws in the bed floor? Any insight is appreciated!
Thanks Adam! We just let friction and tight tolerance to the front and rear of the bed hold it in place. Never had any issues with sliding in 80000+ miles of travel 👍🏼. Good luck with your build, and enjoy the GFC - it's a game changer for sure 🤙🏼
Thank you for the info! Looks like i was not the only one who has your video as inspiration to make the decision to get the GFC! Earlier this year i came across your set up and now my install is in JUNE!!! Driving 2800 miles to montana!! Thanks again!
I keep coming back to GFC when it comes down to planning what I want to travel in a couple of years from now. And the GFCs campers are always in the running. Now if I can decide what vehicles get...Subaru or truck....🤔🤔
They really do make a great Camper & RTT. Subarus are great, but I will say - if you can swing a truck with high clearance it'll open up a whole other world of options as far as off-road access while traveling. Happy trails!
@@takethetruck I don't plan to do anything heavy like rock crawling lol.
I'd consider a Jeep if I can find one that hasn't been run into the ground.
I'd put a one inch life on the Subaru if I went that route.
@@kevinnorwood7355 gotcha 👍🏼 we've just run into enough mild off-road trails/scenarios with amazing views (e.g. white rim trail in Moab) that we wouldn't have been nearly as comfortable doing with less ground clearance.
@@takethetruck my first concern with getting a Jeep was they are not good on gas. Then someone reminded me that people are doing to not to how fast they can get to their destination.
@Mountain Chief I wouldn't buy a new Jeep I miss the inline six of the older Jeeps.
Nice set up! i have a GFC on order that should be ready around the end of 2020. Any issue with bugs entering where the tent attaches/snaps to the structure? Any complaints or changes you want to make?
Thanks! Haven't had any issues with bugs yet, and we camped in some pretty buggy spots in MT & ID. We'll likely treat the tent fabric with Permethrin for good measure though. No complaints at all so far, definitely recommend the side entry option if you can swing it for the views, ventilation, and entry options. You'll have the latest hinge design that is 💪🏼 so that'll be really nice! Hoping to get those retrofitted next time we're up thier way 🤞🏼. Hang in there, the wait is definitely worth it!
@@takethetruck thanks so much!
one more question....what's the bed length on your Tacoma, is it 6'?
I have 2019 tundra with GFC i picked up late spring early summer. Has the old style plastic hinges. The passenger side panel broke off and waked me in the head as there was still pressure on lift struts. I think that yours will have new extrusion type, especially if it hasn't gone into production. They do have GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE.
thanks so much!
Man, seen you on instagram and been following a while, saw this pop up tonight, definitely a dream of a rig you have!
Thanks! Really appreciate the support! 🙌🏼
Does GFC still make campers for the 80s/early 90s Toyota Pickups? Only seeing an option on their website for the '95+ Tacos.
I would think so, but I'd recommend reaching out to them via email to confirm 👍🏼
Nice setup. How do you like the WeBoost system? I have never heard of this and have been frustrated that I do not get signal strength of any kind really with Republic Wireless on the road from Houston to Wyoming.
Thanks! After years of working remotely we finally feel like we've got a cell service/booster combo that actually helps/works. We just did a write-up on it on our site if you want to check it out: www.takethetruck.com/blog/camping-wifi
Do you have ideas on a tailgate lock of some kind to secure your cargo? I have a 93 toy pickup and will be getting my GFC early 2021 and am wondering on ideas how to lock it up tight. Nice Rig!!
The GFC rear hatch sits over the tailgate on our truck, so we just lock the GFC up 👍🏼
Hi, I'm currently in the research stage of camper set-ups for my 2013 Toyota Tacoma. Your set-up looks great except for one thing. The lower side panels don't have screens when open. You've talked about camping in buggy areas. Did you put screens on or does Go Fast provide them? Thanks for the video. ~Lucy
Cool setup! I'm going to build something similar when I get my GFC later this year. Question: Can you store any bedding on the mattress when the tent is closed? I was thinking maybe a blanket would fit if it wasn't bunched up anywhere, but just wondering your experience. Appreciate the vid! Take it easy
Thanks! We store a two person Thermarest 20 degree down quilt and compressible pillows up there just fine - but our old Big Agnes two-person synthetic fill bag that doesn't compress as much didn't fit as well. Was worth the upgrade to down to have everything fit up there nicely. Hope this helps!
@@takethetruck Thanks, that's helpful. Looking forward to getting mine
Did you end up making any updates on the mattress pads ?
I find them to be pretty firm. Wondering what people might have done to fix that.
Also did you put a wind fairing on ? I’m trying to find a good one for the GFC.
Thanks! Great video.
Thanks! No mods to the mattress pads yet, we slept on it for a month straight on our last trip without issue - did take about 4 nights to adjust at first though. We do typically prefer a firm mattress though.
We used a Yakima wind fairing mounted on a round bars over the cab on our last trip, but recently removed it to use the round bars up on the GFC and honestly can't tell the difference without it. Believe GFC makes a wind fairing for the front of the tent portion.
I really liked you old setup. And can understand why you moved the refrigerator inside. But did you consider just putting a wedge tent on top of your old camper top?
Thanksand thanks for watching! We liked the old setup too. We did look at RTT options, but our primary goal was to have a usable living space for longer bouts of inclement weather while traveling for weeks at a time. The GFC offered that solution in a design we liked, and felt it was worth the investment for our usage case.
Are these more of a universal fit? Is it just bed size that matters? I recently picked up an 89 Toyota pickup and I would love one if these!
Great set up how does the wind effect the tent?I’m considering a set up like this we live on Maui we experience 20 mph most days do you think it can handle?
Thanks! For sure, we've been in 30-35+ without issue.
I'm thinking of doing a set-up pretty similar to yours. but I keep running into issues nearly maxing out my pay load capacity. Seems like you might be cutting it pretty close as well. Are you running over your GVWR? Or do you not worry about it as you probably have done a lot of suspension upgrades to make the ride smooth?
We run an Old Man Emu heavy suspension lift which is rated 500lbs over stock, and upgraded our front braking system as well - so we're not extremely concerned. We do run pretty close to GVWR, and it's always a struggle to stay light and to reduce weight when needed to stay under this figure for safety. The GFC is actually a good bit lighter than our old setup, which consisted of a fiberglass camper shell, roof rack, awning, and road shower mounted up top.
Did you make the drawer or buy it? I like that it is only on 1 side
Thanks, we made it - here's a detailed how-to build guide we put together: www.takethetruck.com/blog/homemade-diy-truck-camper-build
Nice rig ,I have a 2019 toyota tundra that I put a GFC on end of last spring early summer. Did yours come with the new style hinge on side panels. Or did you have them replaced? I love mine, although owned less than a year. I also got side door option. Glad I did. Please let me know about hinges. Thanks subbed and liked. Todd
Thanks! We have the newer-style non-riveted Live Hinges, but just missed the introduction of the Embassy Hinges. We plan to swing back by the shop next year to have them swapped out. Such an awesome bunch of folks at GFC! Thanks for the sub!
@@takethetruck me too, can't wait . Had it on 3 trips since I picked it up in Montana. Today I got the band aid brackets so I can drive it and not worry about the gear that lives in the back. Thats the main reason I went with it instead of rack.
So where does the kiddo ride? Those Extra cabs don't have a lot of room in the back.
We have a narrow car seat and she rides between us on the bench seat. It's cozy, but not unbearably so. 👍🏼
@@takethetruck most would never consider the pickup with 3! I am sure many of us would love to see a video of your cab setup.
Nice rig, do you still like the new set up ?
Thanks, yes - in fact we liked it so much we used a very similar setup on our latest first gen tacoma build after having our second kiddo!
Nice rig I wish I would’ve kept my old Yoda
Thanks, it's definitely hard not to love them
How much is that?
That see through roof must let in a lot of light? Not good for sleeping in lol
Haven't even noticed it really, doesn't let a ton of light in. We've slept in fine the few times we've needed to without any issue, but if you're used to sleeping in a room with blackout curtains it may take some adjustment.
nice
Thanks!
