I heard John Holiday sing for the first time tonight and found several of his performances on RUclips. There is no doubt in my mind that he has one of the greatest voices of our times. His voice reaches the core of one's soul. He is truly a gifted individual with a phenomenal voice.
So happy to see him! I am also a young black male (18) and I also typically sing really high and into the soprano range (C3-G5-D6 (E6)). He’s right, for some of us (like me) it’s our real voice that can go up that high, not always falsetto.
So high voice and bad singing are two completely different things. Breaking the window is from bad high voice. This mans voice isn't bad. Ur windows will be fine.

But he’s a mezzo-soprano countertenor, or a mezzista (as my singing teacher or myself), not a sopranista. So, he’s the equivalent to female medium voice type, not the highest. His voice is quite light for a mezzo, but the highest note I have ever heard him singing is an A5, which is about as high as I can sing, and he doesn't sound like he can go much higher than that (A5 is SUPER HIGH for a man, let's not forget it). But then again, people are obsessed with vocal range, and that is NOT what makes a good singer. I much prefer John Holiday to Dimash, for example, even if Dimash can sing more than an octave higher (maybe even two, I don’t know, I don’t care). Range by itself is meaningless, the same way blue eyes are not inherently better than brown eyes. What does matter is what you do with the range you have, and Holiday is great. Saying he sings “the highest of high notes”, however, is untrue, and continues to mislead people into believing the higher you sing, the best you are. And what he uses is definitely head voice/M2, or “falsetto” (an obsolete term that I personally despise). His speaking voice is that of a regular tenor, so we can infer that his passagio (the “break” between registers) is around G4-A4. Everything he sings above that is head voice/falsetto, because it is impossible to do it by any other means. Even female singers would use head voice at those heights. However, classical singers are trained to lessen the timbre difference between their registers, since homogeneity (sounding as the same voice in the lower and higher parts of the range) is paramount to the classical aesthetic.
And now he's on the Voice. I'm so glad because he deserves a wider audience. I've never heard anyone with that kind of range. At least 5 if not 6 octaves. He's my pick for a winner this season. What an inspiring teacher he must be!
No offense but that's not how octaves work. He has a nice voice and a nice range, but he sings within a two octave range, he likely has at least a three octave range total but definitely not 5 or 6. An octave is a measurement of vocal range, and he has only demonstrated being able to sing from the alto to soprano range; having a 5 octave range is like being able to sing a low bass' low notes (like C2) to being able to sing an octave above the soprano's high C (C7) using the whistle register. He has not demonstrated a nearly wide enough range to suggest that he has that much distance from his lowest to highest notes
Again, no offense to you, but I get annoyed when people give good singers labels such as "four-octave" and "five-octave" as a description of having a good voice. Having a good voice is separate from having a large vocal range, you can have a average vocal range and be a world class singer. He has such a beautiful tone to his voice. I do understand that the upper portion of his vocal range is the focus of this story, but I'd love to hear his full range. I'd love to hear him in concert. I imagine that he'd perform music from the jazz, gospel & classial traditions. Performing various styles of music requires an incredible amout of dedication. He no slouch on the piano. I look forward to hearing him again.

Absolutely wonderful! I’m a freshman in my high school and I’m in my school’s women’s chorus. I am always an Alto II and I may be one of the lowest singers in class, but I’m not sure. So far I can hit extremely low notes that some of my peers, even older ones, sometimes cannot.

I don't understand why so many people seem to think falsetto is not part of a man's natural range. This is completely false. There is nothing false about falsetto; It is basically just the male head voice and is completely natural. I guy is not not using some vocal "hack" or "cheat" when he uses his falsetto to sing in the soprano range, he is legit singing in the soprano range. Besides, falsetto doesn't have to sound breathy and weak; many men who sing in falsetto sing with a reinforced falsetto that sounds full and strong.
I am 15 and I am in the Soprano 2 in my choir of Soprano 1,2 and alto and I am the oldest in my choir and I can reach Soprano 1 tones but I dont know in tenor tho and I feel him, people tease me too but I am proud of it.
As a female who got teased a lot for my low voice, this man serves as a true inspiration for not being afraid to sing with your true voice
