That audio of The Day of the Triffids sounds excellent, I'll have to look it up! I also can't remember the ending.

tbf part of me now wonders if the ending for the book is different from the ending for the radio drama... at least neither are like in the old movie of it, where they randomly discover that salt water kills the triffids and the day is saved, hurray, credits

Hah, I was intrigued by Children of Time but read the preview and wasn’t into it at all, pro style dodge. I think all those things would bug me. Fire breathing ants lol what about Perdido Street Station. Though not specifically spiders, it is about a human/gene hacking/insect people culture. I think it’s really well done. It is weird, “New Weird”.
I liked The Chrysalids quite a bit more than I expected. I’d probably give another a try, sometime.

bugged by bugs, the worst! China Miéville has been on my To Read list since i was 20... insect people sounds great. i do hope i find giant spiders one day tho, he sighed wistfully.
while i like the Chrysalids a lot and think it's really influential, his other three main novels made a much bigger impression on me, so i hope you feel the same way if you get round to one of the others =]

Re: A Luminous Republic, I relate so much to being put off of a character because we are in their head. It’s hard to know what the author is signing off on, versus critiquing. Sometimes it makes for a better read, but there are moments when the subject matter is so delicate that the vagueness becomes problematic.
Also, where did you get the BBC radio version? Id love to check that out!

oh, i'm glad my explanation of that made sense! the vagueness definitely became problematic, at least for me. i don't need the writer to tell me how to feel about their characters, just to give me the distance so that i can make up my own mind, i guess.
i got it from my library's app but i see it's free to download from the Internet Archive =]

Aw, bummer about A Luminous Republic. It sounded interesting when you started talking about it! I haven't read Midwich Cuckoos. Oh ya...human vs human does not sound nearly as interesting re:Children of Time. The Day of the Triffids has been on my list for so loooonngggg ughhh...I need to read it....
That is a bummer about that series you like. I will suggest just reading the plot on wiki? Lol. That is what I do when I am curious about plot of something I have started (movie or book) and am not into the actual thing but need to have closure.
    Modern Japanese Stories sounds fun!!

A Luminous Republic sounded interesting to me too T_T it just didn't work out between us, but i'm to blame, it just reminded me too much of a book i liked better ~ that's sound advice on the wiki-reading front, it's easy to resist for now tho because i kinda worry the plot might just keep taking it all further and further away from what i originally loved... but maybe i'll try continuing properly again one day, maybe. ~ it's never a bad time for a Modern Japanese Story!
