Great suggestion. After I stopped using traditional anti-persperant / deoderants I started cleaning my underarms with a diluted mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. The ACV kills bacteria and once dried you do not smell it but the under arm odors are gone. (At least it worked great for me). I still use natural deoderants so I love the idea of this DIY deoderant. Many thanks!
Nicole Jones hi I have a question: do u recommend using the vinegar and water in the shower as soap for your underarms? Or before applying the natural deordarent? Thanks! :)
Hi Lupe, I actually put it on before my shower so it has time to kill the bacteria. You can rinse it off in the shower after if you want, so as long as you leave it on long enough to kill the bacteria. Also sometimes I do it if I do not take a shower right away, I will just take a cotton swap, wipe the underarm, let it dry and then add deoderant after it dried. Hope that helps :)
This is true my mom does this and her armpits smell literally like absolutely nothing. Even when she is sweating. I think the lime kills bacteria. My only advice would be to make sure your armpits won't be exposed to the sun to prevent sun burning. Wear full t-shirts instead of strapless or tank tops.
I’ve tried every “natural deodorant “ out there and NONE work more than a few hours. I’ve tried the recipe he mentioned making at home also. Drinking a lot of water didn’t help with the pit odor either. I think some people just have a stronger body odor that nothing can fix.
Laura Harris I totally agree I’m still searching for relief.... I bathe frequently, drink water and change clothes frequently to keep skin dry. This has been bothering me since my youth..🤦🏽♀️
Hi Dr. Axe, I love that you are advocating the use of essential oils as they can be so healing and can eliminate body odour. I must admit to being a bit lazy and bought proskin athlete for women instead of making my own. It has some of the oils you mention - coconut oil, tea tree oil and patchouli oil and it has worked wonders for my under arm odour. It doesn't stop me from sweating but when I do sweat I don't smell because I think it kills the bacteria that causes it and it smells lovely too. I also read that sweating is healthy and I don't sweat that much so I didn't need to use an anti-perspirant in addition to this.
I just take chlorophyll tablets daily. For the occasional funk I just rub my pits with a slice of lime. It kills bacteria and hasn't caused me issues even though I am sensitive to citrus. I haven't worn deodorant in years.
woow! This is Awesome idea thanks Josh! Can I use few drops of sandalwood or tea tree oil? I have got 20+ different essential oils in me cubored.. never thought of making my own deodorant 😊. will give it a shot 👀
Hi Doc I have a 19month old baby and she as this problem, my pediatrician said its normal but I'm worried. can I use lemon on her. Awaiting your response. Thank u
I wouldn't recommend lemongrass if you eat a lot of garlic, unless you want to smell like Pad Thai 😂😂😂 doesn't work on me at least. Pine is great for smells as well
Forgot to ask: what about mineral salts? I have been using that and it is very effective but is potassium alum (natural mineral salts) being aplied directly to the arm pits safe for long term use? It has nothing else added, such as aloe or scents, etc.
Hello Josh, I love your videos they are very inspiring and life changing! I want to do body mist with essential oils. Is it a good idea to mix it with water instead of carried oil? Thank you very much 💕
i mixed 1 tea spoon of baking soda and warm water(almost half acup)then i added 5 drops of lavender oil in a spray bottle . is it harmful to use it on my armpits 😊
My husband is one of those (lucky) people who don’t smell. He doesn’t use deodorant and works outside. We live in Florida. His farts only smell when he eats animals/ animal products.
Hello Dr.Axe, Do you remember You and Jordan Ruben had some information on using essential oils for pain relief. It was layering oils to make a morphine like pain relief. I just know it worked so well. I know people that would really like that information and I can’t find it. Can you help me with that? Thank you 😊
Thanks Dr. Axe, love your stuff. I do have a question though. Is there an alternate to using baking soda for those of us who have a sensitivity to it? My underarms get all dark and leathery-looking (gross).
I shower exclusively with Kirk's Castile Aloe Vera soap. I get those little spray bottles from Walmart. I put 20 drops of whatever essential oil I like then top it up with distilled water. Shake vigorously before each use and spritz. The water evaporates and leaves the oil. It's all you need. Deodorants and colognes are nasty.
That is great but does anyone know if this diy deodorant stain your clothes? Any particular oils or essentials oils that are known to stain that we should stay away from? I might need to change oils due to allergies. I just do not want to stain my clothes or My bf white tshirts mandatory for his job.
Hello Dr. Axe, do you know of any treatments for Hordoleum? It tends to flare up when I have the heat on in my car. Ocassionally, I will do a black tea bag over the eye...I looked it up on the internet, but thought maybe you had additional info. It does give relief. Sometimes I don't feel like boiling a tea bag...esp. when I get home from work, which is close to midnight. I'm a NA and I work second shift. Thank you. Also, I made my own pit deodorant and the baking soda irritated my underarms...which I use ocassionally still..I switch on/off with a natural spray deodorant I found at TJMax. I don't care too much for the Tom's deodorant...it makes me feel greasy!
I wear long sleeve button shirts and my home made deodorant of baking soda, coconut oil and tea tree oil leaves many sweat and oil stains in my shirts ! I am forced to go back to my old standard deodorant. How do I stop the sweating naturally
I have tried switching to natural deodorants with simply arrowroot powder, baking soda, coconut oil and essential oil ingredients. But I developed a very painful underarm inflamed rash on both underarms. When I quit applying the product, it healed. Reintroduced, it came back. I believe this is from the abrasiveness of the baking soda or arrowroot. I had to go back to my aluminum conventional brand but I really don't want to! Any suggestions on how to prevent the rash?
Brooke Flood Baking soda does it to me. I replaced it with clay. I'm using bentonite clay as I already had it available. 1oz coconut oil, 1tbs corn flour or arrowroot if you have it, 1tbs clay, 20 drops of essential oil. Been using for months without any issues. I was ready to give up on making my own until i found this recipe.
Thank you so much Frank Incense; this is great! I have all these ingredients! Although, my bentonite clay comes liquid in a bottle. Is your clay a liquid as well? Otherwise, I could adjust the recipe. I appreciate your help!! It's important I switch to natural deodorant because breast cancer is in my family, and aluminum has an influence on developing it. Thanks so much!
Are u putting baking soda mildly like simply rub lightly? Because I use baking soda, dissolve it with water between my palms. I used to have that rash before when I applied it on my armpit harshly. So dissolve them first and apply lightly. Might work. Let me know
Db Cooper the tea tree is excellent for tmau. U can also mix tea tree, peppermint, and lavender oils into ur ph balanced body wash. Also add a little coconut oil into the mixture.

Pachouli is the most horrible smell in the whole world No one wants to smell that.
I’ve used it in the past instead of deodorant, and it worked wonders however, it did require a body mist to level the scent.

I use Dr. Bronners to wash and put full strength organic apple cider vinegar on armpits. Been doing it for many years and it works GREAT.
Awesome, thanks for the tip!!! Have a great day/night! :)
Why does it have to be apple?
Cut open a lime and use the lime juice under your arms and poof !! Smells gone 😚. Just dont shave that day ❤️
Use it everyday
I’ll try the lime
THANKYOU SO MUCH THAT IS HONESTLY SOO HELPFUL

I use lemons too and that works great! I cut up slices and put them in glass container in my fridge. This is my daily deodorant.
Lavender, jasmine and rose essential oils are great too.
How do you apply it to your body?

Loved this, sandalwood is one of my favourite essential oils. I look forward to making my own deodorant, love diys xx
I use crystal alumen deodorant and it works fine with me. :) Its natural and the crystal lasts a long time, so no need to buy deodorant regurarly..
Do you have to apply more one time at day?
Patchouli oil can be very overwhelming to people (bystanders) with allergies. I'm surprised you included that.
Oh I agree ! I love oils but that one is like a nightmare Avon smell!!!

How about flavor oils for their scent factor. They contain soybean oil. Is soybean oil safe for armpits?
Lemongrass oil is one of my absolute favorite oils. Is it okay to still diffuse it if trying to conceive or are pregnant?
Dr. Axe, what is the shelf life for this deodorant. I noticed you didn't add any preservative.
