After 2008 AP was Negro-chela, Burning Mayne. First wave Afropunk was very working class. It became performative in later years and is now completely corporate owned.

Afropunk is not about punk anymore but rather the “alternative” black scene and it’s beautiful… R&B, Neo Soul, Jazz, Pure feel good hip hop and rock rap.
I see it as a culture of black people who aren’t willing to be sold the mainstream degeneracy they wanna push on the black community which is centered around gangbanging and materialism but rather want to embrace Afro futurism, spirituality and expression of true self.

afropunk is pretty much a NYC cultural staple at this point. it's expanded to a handful of cities around the world and continues to grow. however, it seems that the festival has deviated from its punk origins over the past few years ~

Never been to Afropunk but I didnt know the festival had such a rich history. It’s kindda unfortunate that the festival has diverted so far away from what James Spooner originally intended it to be but anytime something gets commercialized, that seems like it’s inevitable. It also does seems like a lot of people have found a home at afropunk because of how popular and widespread it has become so maybe that’s a benefit of what it has turned into 🤷🏾‍♂️. Nice vid!

I’ve never been to Afropunk, I guess I was always late to look at tickets but my friends have enjoyed it. But you know it’s fishy when the founder of something steps down…like ehhh where is this train going now?!?😬

It's not PUNK anymore. I'm foundational and have been around during the origins/roots... It has been co-opted and corporatized...
No more ANGST just fashion... It's lost it's way {Inclusion is the issue... Inclusion is mainstream} IT'S NOT PUNK

I've been in Punk, Psychobilly, Oi, etc... for 25 years. I will say that I do like what this festival is doing but it really isn't anything Punk that I've done. I see more of an "Afro Alternative," "Alt Afro," "Afro Alt" is a better description for this. I'm all for this but again, there really isn't that much "Punk" in what I have seen.
I will say if you like harder Black music check out Death, The Templars, and Negro Terror.
