    This has helped me SO much I really can’t stand the “goth shops” now such as dolls kill.... so expensive and horrible quality. So thank you for posting!

    I was always a "goodwill goth" or "garage sale goth". I would always make accessories for my friends too. One week I made 7 tiny top hats...I probably shoulda charged, considering how broke I was. Lol.

    You don't even know.. A lot of baby bats come up to me "omg where do you get your clothes? they are so beautiful! but my parents only give me __ amount of money to shop with, so i cant afford those things!" Oh sweety, no! You just go to thrift stores. You can find a piece here and a piece there.. And i guarantee you can customize and make stand out from all your friends!

    • @DomesticatedGoth
      @DomesticatedGoth 8 лет назад +14

      Exactly! And thrift shopping often means you look a lot more unique than people who get all their clothes 'off the rack' new.

      Here there are no cool clothes in the thrift stores :/ All the clothes are incredibly boring because this is a smallish area with no differing tastes

    • @DomesticatedGoth
      @DomesticatedGoth 8 лет назад +14

      Most of my thrifted stuff wasn't made for Goths - it's things that individually might have been worn as part of a mainstream outfit by perhaps a middle-aged lady with classic tastes (plenty of fitted black velvet jackets, for example, or black button-up blouses with lace and ruffles), but when worn with ripped-up fishnets and the right accessories, are transformed into Goth-ness. Half my wardrobe is vintage and second-hand Marks & Spencers (a brand in the UK that markets to upper-middle-class tastes), but it is how you assemble an outfit and how you layer things up, accessorise, customise.
      Tips:
      A lot of things look better with some quality lace trim (soft tulle lace, guipure lace, avoid scratchy plasticky raschel lace) and ugly lace can usually be swapped out with nice lace quite easily.
      Swap coloured buttons or brassy/gold buttons with silvery buttons.
      Cotton and natural materials dye more easily than synthetics, and dyeing things that are the right cut but the wrong colour often works.
      Look around autumn - it's usually autumn/fall time that thrift shops put out their velvet and their black, their jewel-tones.

      DomesticatedGoth Thanks for the advice. I don't have an eye for accessorizing so I'm really bad at putting outfits together, especially because I prefer the more subtle romantic look. No one believes I'm goth because most of the time I don't look it but that's usually because I either don't have the clothes, I haven't fully developed my own sense of style with the clothes I do have (even after three or four years of identifying as goth), or I don't know how to put together good outfits.

    • @DomesticatedGoth
      @DomesticatedGoth 8 лет назад +7

      Happy to help :)
      The quickest way to make an outfit more obviously 'Goth' is to use Gothic iconography - bats, skulls, ravens, skeletons, spiders, black roses, etc. Little charms with those sorts of designs can be picked up quite cheaply, just be careful for things where the silver plate rubs off on something copper based (clear nail-polish on the back can help with that) and can be made into things like chokers (one thin ribbon through the charm and looped over a thicker velvet ribbon and a touch of fabric glue - simple choker).
      Details like bell sleeves or sleeves that flare out towards the wrist, lace-up or 'corset' details, lace trim and ornate buttons can all contribute to a Romantic and Gothic look.
      Lace gloves are a staple of my wardrobe. Don't buy the cheap ones from China because they'll probably tear the first time you wear them. Claire's have some of varying quality - I suggest inspecting the lace carefully, and if it's coarse and plasticky (especially as that can get really annoying really quickly when worn on your hands. Scratchy!), or if its softer and more fabric like. Accessorise have often had really nice ones. Also, if you get some really wide lace, sew it into a tube, and cut a suitably sized button-hole type thumb hole, it's really easy to make your own fingerless lace gloves.
      Fishnet tights, layered ripped tights, patterned tights - all good for wearing under skirts and shorts.
      For practising putting together outfits, lay them out flat on a clear space (bed, floor), or on a dress-form (if you have one) or even hanging it up on two coat-hangers and some rope (one for shoulders, one for hips) and play around with them. Also, find people with a style that's close to your own, and analyse their OOTDs and fashion pics - you don't have to get the exact same item as they're wearing, but think about what the clothes are, what sort of cuts are they wearing, and how they layer etc.

    i was an early 90's goth, Im 42 now... oh my god what happened.. from country/mountains outside sydney Australia & i used to travel 40mins on train to go to a shop called 'Used & Abused'. It was a 2nd hand store, not quite a thrift store but the very alternative owner scoured markets around sydney for any cool clothing for goths, punks & hardcore metalheads. i bought some great corsets there, leather gear, coats & yes i owned about 8 -10 slips & 1/2slips too. such beautiful clothes

    As a 90's kid, I remember making my own dark blue lipstick in eighth grade. Eyeshadow and Vaseline...lol! I thought I looked awesome, but all the neighborhood kids said I looked like I had been kissing a smurf! I really love how you explained your ingenuity to create what you wanted out of what you had. I still to this day have that DIY spirit, though thankfully not for blue lipstick.;-)

    It's been really fun seeing the resurgence of 90s goth style. It's kind of weird seeing younger people dressed in the way I dressed back then (I was all about the slips) and it's great for shopping on the high street for a change.
    Although after 20 years my mum has finally given up on wondering if my style is 'just a phase'.
    This was a fun and nostalgic video, thank you.

    seeing your videos and you talk about 90's goth makes me so happy and nostalgic. the first goths I encountered were when I was but a very small child (not even 5) and I remember how sweet they were and how encouraging they were towards me. they were always so willing to show me their world and encourage my love for the dark and unusual. I envied them and always wanted to be like these magical people who enjoyed the things I did. now thanks to them and many other goths I have met through the years, I am the weird goth I am today and I love it. I look forward to more videos on 90's goth from you since it makes me so happy to watch and I am rather enjoying your playlists. have a lovely evening and thank you for being amazing.

    Hello and how are you. I love you channel!!! Elder punk here. I was a very extreme punk back in the early 80's! Now most days I'm dressed as a normie, but mostly because of work. Best of times back in the day. Now my days off I do dress my punkish style, but that's just me. So funny to see some of these kids when they see this "old" lady dressed like that. I'm just me and always love to see when people of any age feel comfortable with their own style. By the way, I am almost 50 and will be that old lady at 80 dressed in my punkish style. You are very encouraging and I appreciate you very much!!! By the way, you are just gorgeous!!!

    Oh wow. This takes me back. I remember thrifting my clothes or finding lacy black things in regular stores. My grandma gave me one of her old velvet jackets and I practically lived in it during higher school. The local costume shop got a lot of my money too. I bought lace gloves, tights, and fans. Most of my jewelry came from my mom or grandma. There was this gorgeous silver medallion (that I lost unfortunately) and a silver knotted choker that I loved. Finding makeup sucked. For a while i wore brown lipstick or a purple wet n wild lipstick cause they were the darkest I could find. My friends and I did many a post Halloween shopping spree. We'd stock up on fishnets and make up for the year.

  • @sophisticatedPJs
    @sophisticatedPJs 4 года назад +5

    My best thrift tip for anyone in the comments reading this is to TRY EVERYTHING ON. If a piece looks even vaguely interesting to you, try it. This sounds weird but a lot of pieces look completely different on than they do when they're hanging up. My favorite dress rn is one I was originally just gonna cut up and make into a DIY, on the hanger it practically just looked like a big boxy piece of fabric. But the moment I got home and tried it on to see what I wanted to change.. I was completely shocked because it looked great all on its own. I'm probably gonna be wearing it till it's unusable.

    • @sophisticatedPJs
      @sophisticatedPJs 4 года назад +2

      Also, trying things on is important because if you don't you might end up with something that looks great on the hanger but ends up not fitting you at all, and then you're stuck having to resell it or donate it back to another store.

    Just discovered your amazing videos! I'm only a few years younger than you, and I was into Goth in the 90s, though I can't say I was actually goth or not? I'm from a very very small town in Washington state and had unfortunately limited exposure to it in those days. I dressed goth as much as I could for what I had though. lol And it's stayed with me though ever since. The music, the fashion, all of it. Now I live on eastern side of WA and I finally found a small scene here.

    Gosh, I wish I could sit with you over a cup of tea or coffee and chat about the good old days as a 90's Goth teenager.:) Many of the things that you mentioned is like taking a walk down memory lane. The struggle was real, but it was a magical time. I think many 80's and 90's Goth teens really pushed the limits of their imagination in terms of clothing and jewelry, as there were not many shops to source from..you just had to get creative. I remember being regularly in thrift stores hunting for black coats.. that was my obsession...preferably vintage and velvet. :))Growing up in Cape Town, there used to be the most amazing art and crafts flea markets in the city center. There were also a few independent Goth clothing stalls, and I recall once saving up money to buy a velvet dress that I'd been pining over. The designers at the time only made one of a kind pieces which were reasonably priced however, if you didn't purchase that skirt or dress the same day and it sold..well too bad. Luckily the owner with whom I spoke was kind enough to put it aside for me after my very "heartbreaking" story. :)

    • @janewinter7815
      @janewinter7815 8 лет назад

      I am honestly smiling from ear two ear right now. We most certainly were the Macgyvers of our generation, innovative and fierce! :p With little to no money the only tool available to us and free of charge was the imagination. I think 80's and 90's Goths worked hard on creating their own unique looks, but most importantly they did it to go out and have a good time. People back then dressed up, showed off their crafty attires and complimented one another without the fear of some kind of elitist backlash. Personally I think that there was more a sense of community among the Goths of the 90's, at least in my city. We loved our differences and we supported each other. You once described the decade as "a magical time" in a previous video. I really wish i could go back if only for a little while. I would choose 1996 front row at the The Awakening gig Cape Town. One of the most memorable nights of my life. sigh :)

    • @angelabenedict
      @angelabenedict  8 лет назад

      Jane Winter I love The Awakening! Are you from Cape Town? Second hand shops, scissors, needle, thread and fabric dye! We really did support and compliment one another. It's almost like high school now were you're ostracized for not having the right brand of shoes or something. That goes against the acceptance and ingenuity our foundation was built on. 1996 was a good year-- I think I'd join you!

      Angela Benedict I had no idea things got that crazy at thrift stores down there. Back when I was a teenager in the 1980s and early 90's great looking vintage clothes could be had for $15 or less. New York Gentrification & Hipsters suck the fun out of everything!

    • @angelabenedict
      @angelabenedict  8 лет назад +1

      ***** It got really bad. I spent $60 on a dress in Goodwill on 8th I believe in 2007. It's hipsters and the ever rising cost of rent. Trash and Vaudeville got pushed out after being there over 30 years because of rising rent costs.

    Normal stores will surprise you! I found a beautiful bralette top and a corset looking top at Rainbow in store! I also found beautiful velvet platforms at forever 21! Also, Goodwill is amazing. I found demonia heels, and a pair of zombie heels. Patience is key.

    My first leather dog collar was also a literal dog collar! It was oxblood red with studs and I loved it :P Even as an early '00s Goth, so much of my clothes from charity shops (our equivalent of thrift shops), and I'd go for all the "granny" clothes in black, and then dye them black if they were cotton but not black, or just get the black things, and sew lace onto it all. I was a broke teenager at the time, and thrift/secondhand stuff is a godsend to all broke Goths - so much of it is much prettier than made-for-Goth stuff, too!
    That dress you found is GORGEOUS! So ephemeral and floaty, a bit fey.
    My first corset was something a bit like those Fredericks of Hollywood ones... I can't remember where I got it! I think my partner's mother currently has it in her sewing to-do pile to have all the plastic boning replaced with steel and the whole thing reinforced. If you still have your FoH corsets, you could possibly 'upgrade' them like that, depending on their construction. My first proper corset was for my 21st birthday, and I think it was £75 - probably about $100 at the exchange rate at the time. It was really very plain, but I loved it.
    You looked really awesome in that burgundy corset. Nice head-piece, too :)

    • @angelabenedict
      @angelabenedict  8 лет назад

      Pet stores are a hidden goldmine for accessories! I agree-- Charity shops really bring out your creative side and the best part is that no one will show up wearing the same thing!
      Those Fredericks corsets are long gone. Bent boning, baaaad shape. That's cool that you're having them reinforced! Thanks for the compliment on the corset and headpiece. I was happy about that combo too :)

      I finally found someone else wearing something from a charity shop that was the same as me - we'd both bought vintage Marks & Spencer's (a very 'classic' retailer, upper-middle-class sort of thing) floor-length layered lace skirts... but that's in having moved from Scotland to England and lived in four or five cities! Other than that, I very rarely find anyone wearing the same clothes as me that I've bought second-hand or from charity shops - but when it comes to made-for-Goth stuff, there's five people in my very tiny local Goth scene who always wear the same Punk Rave jacket with all the straps, and all the Goth girls have the same KillStar leggings, and I know three other people who have the same H&R London jackets as me.

    The corset and the dress are so beautiful omg! Would you wear your slips these days? I wanna see what they look like :)
    Growing up I couldn't afford name brand goth clothes so these work-arounds you're describing sound very familiar. I didn't really have an allowance so I'd starve at school and keep my lunch money and spend it all on cd's, cheap corsets and odd swap meet finds. It sounds like a bummer but there is something magical about finding that strange piece no one would think about buying or wearing and then rocking it (usually lingerie as you know). I sort of wish I could go back to those days.

      +Ultrajet Thank you! The lingerie section was always the prime destination for Goth-wear lol. I know what you mean about that feeling-- Of making the ultimate find and protecting it with your life because of how hard it was to get. It would be nice to go back

    Frederick's of Hollywood 🖤 I had those corsets too. I remember 1 of my major purchases when I was maybe 19 was a satin and vinyl steal boned corset from religious sex and I had spent about $300 on it because I wanted it so bad. Another major buy at 17 was spending over $100 on leather buckeled gripfast leather doc Martens boots from Trash and Vaudeville which I still have till this day because that was how well they were made. I also had a bondage belt and a bullet belt.
    I used to also frequent the clothing store "Funhouse." I still remember the mannequin they gothed out the makeup on with dramatic black liner and purple lipstick.

    • @KimiChanJapan
      @KimiChanJapan 4 года назад

      You can see both those corsets in some old pictures of mine. In one I am wearing a Fredricks of hollywood corset with a lip service vinyl underbust corset over it.
      I am still surprised we never hung out together both being born and raised in NYC. I am I think about 3 years younger than you so that could be why.
      I am sure you will recognize some of the people and clubs I am in, in some of those old pictures if you actually check them out. I used to have so many more/better picutes but most were dumped from websites deleting them.

    Hah! I feel such a kinship right now! I own both of those Frederick's of Hollywood corsets. They were my first corsets as well. The straps on mine are so stretched out it's kinda sad. I have the strapless one in purple. I love your stories and your style. You really had to hunt and dig and think on your feet as a young gothling in the 90's. Over here on the west coast we have Marshalls and Ross.....cheap and black were the prerequisites. I miss my old mall store RAVE....they always had the best crushed velvet dresses. Ok.... I'll stop. You got me all excited. 😉

    The Alley, which has served the Chicago Punk and Goth subcultures since the '70s, closed this year. All the good stores are closing or moving to online-only, despite there being a renaissance of Goth style.

    • @tyjifeku

      Sadly, the business went under. Typical Chicago construction, stretched on FOREVER (like 2 years+ at this point) and killed their ability to get a decent amount of traffic.

    • @angelabenedict
      @angelabenedict  7 лет назад +2

      tyjifeku That really sucks. New York is the same. We always say that NY is in a constant state of disrepair. When will it be done? It's always under construction. We lost a lot of great places due to corporate greed. It's so much cheaper to just move shops online but that takes away the whole experience. Making plans a week in advance to go into the city and hit all the shops. I hope they come to their senses :/

    I went to a shop called Merry Go Round and a gothic shop in a trendy little suburb where all the punks and Goths hung out. The vintage store was too pricey. Still is. Renaissance fairs, you can sometimes find pieces not too pricey. Found a cool cloak for 55 while others ran for over 200. Have to look the entire racks over. Cheaper seems to be hidden. The 700 dollar stuff was up front of course.

    well u certainly do not age :) I was a 90s goth or ppl called me a "witch". lol. I still love it and is why I love Lorde so much. I think she reminds me of that time. it's quite easy to find 90s brands in my area thrift stores, but I notice 2nd hand stores shopping there to mark up high in their stores. thankfully, gothic is black, so easy to put together and looks the best with certain key pieces. oh the early 90s will never die ★♡☆♥★

      In the 80s, in the tri-state area, it was normal to make the best of what one could find. Places like Religious Sex with their *really* high end goth stuff didn't exist yet, so that envy that you mentioned didn't exist back then, but great vintage stuff, cool club wear (easy to find, even in regular malls) and of course old fashioned 80s alternative clothing (low cost) like at the Unique Clothing Warehouse totally were around. Naturally, more people were artists and creative back then, so what people call DIY now was common, though often much better than what we see as DIY these days, lol. Of course, those same people (myself included) were still around in the 90s when the scene got huge. What a great sight to see everyone in their finery back then. The 90s really did look the best, overall!
