- In this video, I am showing you guys how I fixed the annoying rattling noise coming from the exhaust. The issue is a clip for the actuator for the active sound either broke or just fell off so I am showing how to go about fixing that issue. This is a common issue found in the F series BMW ranging from 20i’s to 40i’s.
The only tool you need is a socket wrench and a 10mm attachment.
Exhaust Control Clip I bought
www.fcpeuro.co...
Huge difference between the exhaust noises before and after the fix, you just saved me a FORTUNE from taking my car to the dealership mechanic for this same issue (or dare I say, STEALERship mechanic!!)
Thank for the comment and we strive to save all drivers from Stealership visits 😤!!
Stealership!!!!
Great video! Very informative. If I had a BMW this would help me fix this issue very easily. Please continue making more content!
Thank you for the feedback and will definitely do so!
Thank you and great video ! I can finally fix my poorly built bmw !!
Anytime and LOL 😂
This video was better then the other ones. Thanks!
Thank you I appreciate it a lot!
This is gonna save me a bunch. Keep posting brother!
More to come!
Prob the most annoying repair I’ve ever done on a bmw. 45 min figuring out how to get the clip in correctly, then the stupid clip fell out after I took it for a drive.
Awesome vid man. Saved me a major headache. 100% thumbs up!
This the 5th video I've watch and NO ONE has actually shown positioning the clip!
If you go to 5:30, you will see the position of the clip when it is in place. See if that helps. Keep in mind I am looking at the actuator from lying on the ground, therefore if you do the same it should look like the time stamp.
@@bimmer.sh0ts Thank you
Ima go ahead and order a clip lol thanks
Any advice on getting the bolts off? Couldn't really fit my wrench in as the space was really tight. Thanks
Best thing to do would be to acquire a smaller wrench to fit there, luckily mine was small enough to have it
Excellent video 👍🏼
Thank you very much, I appreciate it a lot!!
When in comfort or sport is the valve fully open? We’re you revving in comfort or sport?
Do you have any clips of the stock exhaust with the flap fully open? Are this burbles from sport with the valve full open?
Are you catless?
Thanks
You will hear the actuator and flap open after your vehicle is done warming up. Usually opens after 2-3 minutes of the car idling. And I was revving in comfort mode the first two times, whereas at the end, I was revving in Sports mode.
My car exhaust is completely stock, still have on my original downpipe. I have another video where I rev my car with the same stock exhaust, just no stage 1 tune with BM3.
This vehicle burbles in sports mode only when you are on the stock tune. However, with BM3 you can adjust the burbles to happen during comfort or sports mode.
I was getting ready to ask the same question because my car burbles and I have the same generation model but it doesn’t sound nothing like that that sounded good
@@KTGPVLOGSKTGPVLOGS the only reason my car sounded the way it did is because I am running a stage 1 tune on my car with stock exhaust. I have a video uploaded of my car with burbles without a tune on it so if you want to check that out and compared your exhaust to it, go ahead! I’m going to upload a video soon of my exhaust after I had installed a catless downpipe and it sounds so much better now .
Excellent video
i used a medal clothing hanger n chopped it up n worked 😂
@weloveyouuaj love the creativity 🤣
Hey what mods do you have on your exhaust? resonator delete? bm3? I have a 2016 328 with 335 muffler, resonator delete and stage 1, I wanna get my burbles like yours, what settings do you have your burbles on? thanks!
The only thing I changed about the exhaust was getting my catless downpipe installed. I also have bm3 stage 1 where i tweaked the burbles as well. I'd reccomend one from x-ph.com since I got mine from there. Make sure you get the motor specific downpipe such as n20 or n26. And also make sure you have a chargepipe as well. Your car will sound better than mine once you have the downpipe installed!
If possible I'd love to hear a exhaust clip of your car when it's all said and done
Thanks you so much I wish I could give you 1000 likes
Thank you I appreciate it a lot! Hit the sub button if you can!
@@bimmer.sh0ts sure thing
Found you, finally
Great video, thanks, looks like an easy fix
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback a lot and yeah it was easy, I think anybody can do it!
@@bimmer.sh0ts for me it wasn't easy because the actuator was also broken and wouldn't move at all, so I had to wedge the clip in lol, and now it's stuck in open at least
@@MrPsychopathYT oh man that’s unfortunate, do you think it could be bent or something?
@@bimmer.sh0ts idk, just stopped one day, I don't really care though
@@MrPsychopathYT As long as you dont hear it anymore youre good!
I cant get the piece in. Any advice on moving the that metal piece on the sensor
Sounds just like my issue. Is that an OEM part, have to get it from BMW, or will any auto parts shop have it, it’s pretty standard?
I updated the description to include the link to where I purchased the clip. It’s OEM BMW so you can try to order it from a dealer as well. Keep in mind they will charge shipping.
Check to see if the clip is there on your exhaust, you’ll know right away if it’s missing or disfigured to where it doesn’t serve its purpose anymore.
@@bimmer.sh0ts thank you!!
I have got problem with my BMW 320D f30 2016 ,when it cold starts the exhaust starts rattles and vibration ,so can you please tell me what it could be thanks ?
Most likely it’s due to your cars Diesel engine since they run differently in the winter. I took a look on bimmer post and other drivers with a 320D/420d experience exhaust rattle on idle. But just in case, I would take a look along your exhaust and test the brackets and mounts if they’re tightened and structurally intact.
@@bimmer.sh0ts Thank you so much, actually its really annoying sometimes when i stop at traffic lights it starts idling and rattling, if you can find out for me, whats wrong with that, it will be much appreciated thanks
@@tastas3331 if it means anything, I just installed a catless downpipe on my car and now mine rattles a little bit when I pull up to red lights too, but I’ll do some more research and if I find out I’ll let you know!
@@bimmer.sh0ts Great thank you :)
Great job
I’m planning to put a tick coin in between the actuator and the valve and get rid of that stupid clip... what do you guys think? Or perhaps another piece or some kind of spring to keep the pressure between the valve notch and the actuator, looks like the clip losses pressure with the heat cycles of the exhaust...
That might actually work. I would say a piece of metal that can withstand high temperatures would be best so it doesn’t become malleable
Thank you!!
Hey bro I just did a muffler and res delete on my 330i f30 when I’m in the freeway and rev up to around 4k rpm’s I hear that rattle but I didn’t keep my valves when I did the muffler and res do you know what it could be ?
Most likely it's because the muffler isnt bolted or attached to anything so it's rattling against the underbody or something. I'd reccomend taking to a welder or exhaust mechanic and ask if they can weld or bolt it down to something.
Mine sounds like this but not as bad it sounds bad when it rains or in reverse or in drive
If i change the exhaust it will stay the same sir?
If you change the exhaust then you will not experience this issue anymore
Thanks a big help
Of course anytime!
I’m new with cars and fixing stuff. Would you be able to recommend the tools I will need? I keep reading people having problems fitting the wrench in there. Do you mind ? I’m a bit scared of working on it but I can’t spent money on mechanic or dealer right now. Just ordered the piece I needed. Now I need to order the tools. Any recommendations ?
Hopefully you already did this job, but if you haven't, you just need a 10mm socket and ratchet, or a 10mm wrench. That's it lol. Obviously you need the new clip as well. Very easy job. If you have problems lining up the slot, just fiddle with the actuator (while it's loose) until you get the clip in both slots, then tighten up the actuator.
I used a 10mm combination wrench (open end/box end). It's small enough to reach all three bolts.
For the life of me, I can’t get that clip in. The grooves on the actuator and flaps don’t seem to line up. It the bigger loop on the clip (not the small one that slots into the flap) pointing towards the front of the car?
You wanna squeeze in the smaller side of the clip into the actuator first and the other side will fit easier. And yes the bigger loop points towards the front of the car
@@bimmer.sh0ts thanks I’ll try again
@@SeanyAHardytry changing what mode your car is in. Mine wasn’t lining up in eco but when I changed it to sport the clip fit like a glove
@@BlueBearJr this worked perfectly changing mode. Thank you so much!!! And for this video! Best one yet! Mahalo Plenty!!!
I’m having a really hard time getting the actuator and the exhaust to line up enough that I can get the pin in! Should the actuator be able to turn when the car is off to help with this? Mine seems frozen in place.
We’re you able to figure this out? I’m having the same issue
There must be something wrong with your actuator because my car was off and I can freely turn the actuator. I would possibly try disassembling the actuator first if possible.
@@MyLifeAmbition I believe it must be an issue with your actuator because mine can be turned when the car is off with ease
But from where I can get this piece of metal?
Exactly
I apologize, I put the link to the part in the description! I didn’t realize I never linked it.
How much would bmw charge to do this? Is it bad to drive without the clip?
I’m not sure how much they would charge but I’m sure it would be much more than doing it yourself. And no it isn’t bad but the sound is terrible and very annoying
Independent bmw mechanic asked for $300 and the dealer asked for about $600-700.
How much is the clip ?
You get two for $8.99
😎😎
wtf i go to the same college with the exact same car
Lmfaoo yoo that's dope! You gonna see me this coming semester 🤣
