Hey guys, I made a new version of this video with a better quality aluminum part and more in-depth installation. Check it out here! ---> ruclips.net/video/6_VZRt03uwk/видео.html
Can we just talk about how he already fixed it but STILL went through the trouble to go back under the car and redo all that work to show his audience. Dedication!
I bookmarked this video 2 years ago when I saw it on your channel. My 340 just started making the noise and I knew right away what to do. Appreciate you man!
Had this issue on my 2015 328i and it was disturbing to say the least. Fortunately it was still under warranty and the dealer mechanic knew the issue within seconds of hearing it. He told me they know the fault well as it's a common failure point for all BMWs. Thanks for the video and the effort to show us what is involved
Holy! Finally a video that actually let’s me know wtf is going on! No lift here and full tank but tackling it this weekend on a 428i! Thanks a million!
I did the AGA Park Cable Clip Repair Kit - cause I truly did not want to have to lower the gas tank at all. I'm very happy to say that this fixed the problem + future proofing and to prevent this from ever happening again.
F22 at 75,000 miles and heard it under hard acceleration. SO GLAD I watched your video on replacing the stock screen because this was the next recommended video and I never would have figured out what the problem was. THANK YOU!!
I have a F34, 330i GT that has the same problem. But luckily the service personnel at the service station correctly identified the issue once I gave a good explanation of the problem. Guess it must have been a very common one. He mentioned how its a hard job to remove all the stuff to replace a cheap plastic clip. Now I can see. Thanks Justin.
YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH PAIN AND HEADACHE THIS VIDEO JUST SAVED ME!! I’ve been trying to find the source of this scraping for months, thank you so much!!
Just replaced this clip early this week on my 2015 f32 (435i) msport using these instructions. Video is very well done and a great help! Thanks! Few comments for anyone else trying this on their bimmer and specifically f32. To drop the exhaust in addition to the steel plate with the six T45 bolts which were T50 on my car there are two diagonal cross-members welded to that plate that are bolted near the rear wheels with one T60 bolt on each side. These had to be removed (with a breaker bar) to drop the exhaust. Also, with stock exhaust there was an additional exhaust hanger closer to midbody that I had to remove to drop the exhaust so that it rested on the ground. With exhaust down, heatshield out, I dropped the fuel tank at ~1/4 full. Definitely understand the recommendation to have it low on fuel when you do this but at 1/4 full it was light enough. I had one hell of a time trying to drop the fuel tank enough to get the clip in and out. What I found was that the brake line on the drivers side, which is hidden by the driveshaft from the angle I was working on it, was getting sandwiched between the tank and the driveshaft preventing it from dropping further. Once I moved the brake lines to the side of the driveshaft it got easier and i was able to get the clip out and new one in, but that definitely was the hardest part of this job. Hope this additional details helps someone trying this in the future. That terrible sound is completely gone!
So this just started on my f32. Curious if you had any type of vibration in the steering wheel. Once I get to about 76 I get a slight vibration and when I let go of the accelerator to coast. Wondering if those cables hitting the driveshaft is the culprit or I got another problem in my hands.
@@nysenyc for me the problem was only audible and not something i felt through the steering wheel. It also only occurred during acceleration and would almost immediately go away once I took my foot off the accelerator. I'd guess you are dealing with a different issue. Good luck!
This procedure was bang-on. I followed it to fix my wife's F30 320i and you made it very straight forward. I even bought an extra clip for when it fails prematurely again! Thank you so much!
Excellent! I managed to fix this on an F20 m sport. Lowered car is even more pronounced. The bracket broke on the right side, hence when under load, doing a left turn, car squats and leans right, amplified the noise further. Managed to fix it with multiple cable ties, without lowering the exhaust. Just need to bend down the heat shields (reshapeable) , reach in and tie up the piping to the bracket.
My car has done this noise for so long and brother I’m just thankful for you and your super helpful video . My car now is nice and quiet. No more anxiety 🙏🏻
BMW of Irvine just quoted me $1500 to replace this part on my 2015 328i. $8 sounds a whole lot better to me! Thank you for the excellent video quality and information.
I just had this come up on my inspection from my local BMW dealership and I was quoted $700 dollars. Needless to say I still need to get this fixed. Thanks for the helpful video.
2015 BMW 328i m performance When I bought the car 8 months ago they didn’t tell me and it rarely did it, now it’s always making the sound. Been lookin it up for months and I finally saw this video. Will be doing it soon.
I just did this today on my F30 335i. Took me about 3 hours. At first I tried to do it without lowering the exhaust but you get so much more access with it lowered. What really helped was a nice medium sized pry bar because it was pretty challenging to lower the tank enough to clear the stud the clip is on. What also helped was a little silicone on the rubber so the new clip slides in easily.
Noticed this on the test drive when I bought my F30 and got the dealer to fix it at my local indy shop and was glad I did as the shop said it was a pain to replace.
Dude, you are awesome! While I’ve decided not to take on this repair myself due to inadequate tools combined with the fact that I’d probably get pinned under my car, I appreciate that you had the answer. Your video is great, and love the bloopers at the end! Thanks!
Justin, you crack me up. I actually have made friends with this failed clip sound, it's actually part of our family now. We will celebrate its 2nd birthday soon. 2015 f30 N20
I love you dude. My 2017 m240 just started doing this. Didn’t hear it for a week then made a Hard acceleration and heard it again. This video is giving me hope that it’s not going to BREAK MY WALLET 😄
This could not have come out at a better time, mine just broke a week after this video dropped! Thanks for saving me all the time of figuring out what it could be! Great video!
I cannot express how much you have saved my life. Your a legend bud, had this noise for weeks had the exhaust done adjusted heat shields checked bolts removed exhaust tips. And it was just a simple plastic clip! The relief I cannot tell you! Thanks again 👏
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It was very helpful. I found a much easier solution that takes 15 minutes. See which cable has the cracked bracket and follow that cable back to the gas tank strap. Make a 6" approximately 1" wide x 1/8" thick bar out of aluminum. You can get the bar stock at Lowe's or Home Depot. Take the bolt out of the gas strap and drill that diameter on one end of the 6" aluminum piece. Then wedge a long rod under the cable to make sure it is seated into the plastic cradle on the frame. Bend the aluminum piece upwards to keep the cable up against the tunnel. Attach the 6" aluminum piece to the bolt and reassemble the gas tank strap with with the 6" piece. Make sure the piece is positioned over the cable to keep it up. This took about 15 minutes to do.
Just did this fix, thanks for the video! I would recommend anyone with a stock exhaust to use their jack to support the muffler to lower it as much as possible without causing damage to anything. Also instead of replacing it with a plastic clip, which will eventually break again, I used the Aluminum clip by AGATools, which I HIGHLY recommend! I will never have to worry about it again.
Wow wow wow. Thank you so much! Bmw quoted me $750 to look at the car I saw your video, showed it to my local mechanic, and paid a grand total of $88 to get my car fixed. Thank you so much!!!
bought a 2014 f30 making this noise from a used dealership without personally test driving it. the wife did the test drive and fell in love. i just signed on the dotted line. of course i noticed the noise the second i drove it and i thought i just paid for a broken car. i ended up learning it wasn't an urgent mechanical issue and i was told it was a pain in the ass to fix so i lived with the noise for WAY too long! so glad to see its about as easy as changing those headlight bulbs! cant wait to do this as soon as i get a day with temperatures warm enough to hols a wrench without having my fingers go numb!
Going to take care of this today. Dealer wanted $1000, haha yeah right. But they covered the $500 shifter light that went out, parts and labor. I just don’t get it. EDIT: 3 hours later... It was a pain!! Ended up removing both brackets on fuel tank and couldn’t get it low enough to put it back in. Ended up spraying a little wd-40 on the rubber grommet, pulled down with pry bar and tapped it with a hammer the rest of the way it. Definitely helps if you have access to a lift and a second person to help when reinstalling the exhaust. Thank you for the video, definitely helped.
Fixed this on my 2017 340i this past weekend. It was pretty much exactly as stated in the video. I have the stock exhaust, so the exhaust didn’t detach completely like in the video; but I was able to work with it once I lowered the exhaust and removed the plate with the 6 T45 screws. All in all, wasn’t too bad of a job. The hardest part was getting the old clip off. I didn’t have a lift so I ended up jacking up the back of the car and using jack stands like in the video. It took me about 2.5 hours to do from start to finish. If I had to do it again it’d probably take half the time. If I had access to a lift it’d likely be even less. DEFINITELY try to do this with as little fuel in the tank as possible. Can’t stress that part enough. Great video! Fixing it myself was definitely better than paying the $715.01 the dealer quoted me for the same job.
I have a question about the clip, some other video suggest that sometimes 2 clips for passenger and driver need to be replaced. Do u know if that’s the case for newer models? (2016 340i)
@@maybe_its_maybelline6381 I have a 2017 model 340i that is all stock, and I only have one clip. Maybe some other models have two clips, but mine was exactly like the video. The only difference was the exhaust for me, not the clip itself.
there are afermarket aluminum ones you can get vs oem that will last forever vs having this issue again later on down the road not to mention it could be dangerous with those cables rubbing against the spinning drive shaft.
Exact same thing happened on my F30 328 a few months ago. I tied some zip ties to it until I could get it into the BMW dealer for a real fix, as it was still under warranty. But awesome video for knowing how to do it when it inevitably happens again! And great skit!
Justin, Thank you for your videos. I've been binging them for a couple of days now. I'm purchasing my first BMW this evening. It's an 08 128i and I'm looking forward to following more of your content for DIY work and mods!
The end scene is exactly how they decide, it is not all cost-related as mass-produce metal can be similar price, as plastic has environmental costs attached to it, they planned it to be painful as possible am surprised they did not find a way to make the whole engine from plastic, thankfully the UK has passed a law on consumer goods where they have to have spare parts for at least 10 years and consumers have the right to fix there own goods this was done to minimize planned obsolescence.
Hey man!!!!!! You are the life saver!! I'm driving BMW 2015 320i. And I have tried to find where such strange noise is coming from. I have searched google and RUclips everywhere to figure it out, but I couldn't. I spend tones of time because of that. And I was so scared to spend lots of lots of money on it. However, Today!! I was looking for something about BMW and I found this video!!! Thank you so much to make such good video!!! I LOVE YOU MAN!!!
2017 M240i started making this noise at 55,000 miles, I was afraid something was going wrong in the LSD diff... happy to hear from the mechanic it was just the emergency break clip.
Life saver, took it to 4 garages, all told me to just "let the sound get worse then we might know where it's coming from" - 2 zip ties around the cable, problem solved!
Great stuff!! Had my 2017 430i m sport in the dealership for oil change......and this clip was broken. $800 to fix it!! I said no thanks.....now it is making the noise. Going to take a stab at fixing it. Thanks again for the good information.
Have watched this video when it came out took it for granted but now some weeks ago my car started making this sound but I never remembered watching this video until searching on youtube about rattle sound near had brake LMAO LEGENDARY Justin YOU SAVED ME, it was driving me crasy and I was so desperate in trying to out what was the problem. THANK YOU
Bruuhh im driving for over 1 year with this sound. i tried everything even replacing the whole exaust. i tought it was some kind of lose bolt from the transmission. finaly i found this video. thanks so much!
Replaced the clip for my 2015 BMW 335i at 32,000 miles. It was $700 bucks to replace. Thankfully my extended warranty with no deductible covered the damn thing. Ridiculous how much something like this can cost. Great video.
Safety tip 3:29, LET the jack hold the car too, in case one of the jack stand fails, you'll have at least 1 side that'll be able to stay up. Hoping it's not the opposite side that will fail, you can still use the central jack point if you can work around it.
i drive an m235 and they just told me today that it’s a $1100 job i’m like f that i rather just do it myself and surely enough there’s a video on youtube to show me how to do it😂😂😂 thanks brotha! 🙌🏼
Hi I just bought a 2014 435i, was giving it a proper boot up an over taking lane tonight and once I got to about 110 ISH at first I thought my splitter had come off and was dragging or my tyre had popped ! Pulled over quickly and looked over the car nothing hanging down etc and splitter still on. I've only had the car 2 days hopefully it's just this 🥺
Man iv been petrified i just changed the propshaft on my M4 and this noise started. Had me thinking diff? Prop? Driveshafts? All sorts thanks so much for this video. Car will be goin straight in to get this sorted
Thank you, followed all your steps and you saved me a couple of hundreds 💲. It was pretty easy the only part that gave me a hard time was aligning the hole of the Clio with the screw from the chassis. Tip do not engage the parking brakes while doing it. Thanks again great detail video👍
I’m so glad i found this video , it’s been happening to my 2015 328i bmw , every time there is too much weight in the car as i press the gas it would make the noise , I’m definitely getting this fixed now . Thank you!
Hello everybody! I just replaced the retainer clip today myself, it took me ~3 hours. One big observation: I don`t know how Justin managed to do it, but there was not enough space to slip in the new retainer, even with the gas tank lowered. So I had to disconnect the propeller shaft with the flex disk from the diff. After that I had enough space to fit in the new retainer. Other than that, the video was helpful! Another tip from my experience today, clip the parking brake cables on the retainer before installing back the propeller shaft, otherwise you wont have enough space to snap them close. If you have Superman fingers, that`s another story, I didn't. Good luck to everybody that wants to tackle this job as a DIY. It`s not a difficult job, but you have to unbolt and disconnect a lot of things, and it takes time. Cheers!
I have an f32 428i and it’s making this exact noise, before my f32 I had a e92 328i xdrive and I’ve been following your videos for years now due to how thorough you are with explaining and showing common issues with these bmw’s thank you!
Man all week I thought it was the driveshaft in my 2014 f31 320d which was f***** 😂😂 whenever I had passangers in the rear seats the grinding noise increased to mad levels but all resolved now 👌Much appreciated
It's amazing how I find several of these videos/post after I spent several months diagnosing this myself. I asked on F30Post forums but got no response. Mine seemed like electronic distortion. I removed most of my interior thinking it was coming from a loose speaker connection. I finally found it one day when I checked under the rear axle. I was looking for a loose connection or something. I could not believe it was the freaken parking brake cables.
Haha you were right, and I’m glad that I had kept this in my playlist because … well… haha need I say more. Thank you sir, will need to get this done. Hopefully will tackle it over the weekend.
This was exactly what I fixed 2 months ago. Was gonna get the part replaced, however just zip tied the e brake line up and away and problem solved. Definitely not the best way, but the sound was driving me nuts!!!!
@@seollenda I had to remove the screws for the heat shield to slide it out of the way. Used a few zip ties to follow the passenger side line, and secured the line to sections in the frame. Used maybe 4 total. I don't have an aftermarket exhaust, so this was the only way to take care of the noise. So far I have not experienced any issues of it coming back. Justin's way actually corrected the issue, however I am using a heavy duty bandage! 😆
I fix this by putting rubber underneath the AC coil lines in the middle of the backseat over the tunnel for the transmission. Little ghetto but it works, didn’t know about the clips for a while until I saw a diagram much later but it’s solve the issue.
So I just did this job on my 2014 for 435 I and I have some advice for you guys. Do not remove the existing gasket from the metal collar. In addition to that you need to cut a slot in the new clip. That will allow you to slide the new clip past the gasket and collar without having to get the clip under the bolt and over the plastic body of the gas tank that holds the metal collar. I used a razor blade and a small hacksaw to cut the slot in the new clip.Don’t be scared to clip the cables on to the new clip before sliding into place because you’ll have a little bit of movement with them locked in place. I also did not have to dismount the muffler. I just removed four bolts from the heat shield covering the drive train and pulled it down a little bit to get a better access from the left side. Because the drivetrain is so close to the bolt that holds the retainer clip it’s almost impossible to do this job without removing the drivetrain unless you cut the slot in the new clip. This is because you could never get the new clip hole under the bolt and have the two little locator prongs on the top of the clip over the plastic part of the gas tank.If you’re reading this comment after you already remove the gasket from the metal collar my best advice is to take the existing gasket or the new one you got with the new clip and slice about a quarter of the gasket out and then profile the top part of the gasket by cutting a little tiny piece off of both sides to get it over the gas tank plastic a little bit more easily around the collar otherwise you will never get the full gasket back in without having more room to work in.
Thanks for advice. I will be doing this project next weekend. Any pictures of how you altered the bracket? Will be helpful if you have a pic of the cuts that you need. Thanks
Or even better if you had a few pictures and a video. I have a 2016 428i. I’m pretty sure I dont want to remove the exhaust Or gas tank either thank you
Hey Justin I have a question I have a 328i 2009 with 100k mils and I’m trying to get 320i 2016 bmw with 100k should I do the trade. I need your opinion thank you 🙏🏽

This popped up in my wife’s F32 4 Series. Was driving us crazy and was scouring the car for a culprit. Thanks for the post. Seriously appreciated!
Glad I could help!
there are afermarket aluminum ones you can get vs oem that will last forever vs having this issue again later on down the road not to mention it could be dangerous with those cables rubbing against the spinning drive shaft.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WAS WRONG WITH MY F30 AND I HAD NO IDEA WHAT IT WAS. YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER MAN!
Glad I could help!!
Now i know what causes that annoying sound too! Thanks man !!
My complete F30 modification list ---> geni.us/f30-mods
I'm glad this this channel exists. Having this issue on my 2018 330i 101k miles but it seems like it shouldn't be a crazy fix
Exact same thing happened on my F30 328 a few months ago. I tied some zip ties to it until I could get it into the BMW dealer for a real fix, as it was still under warranty. But awesome video for knowing how to do it when it inevitably happens again! And great skit!
Going through this issue right now on my 2016 330xi, just hit 50k miles. Your reviews are very helpful, thank-you
I’m a dealer and I got a 330i with this sound. Just wanted to say I love you😂I’m fixing this tomorrow
Justin, Thank you for your videos. I've been binging them for a couple of days now. I'm purchasing my first BMW this evening. It's an 08 128i and I'm looking forward to following more of your content for DIY work and mods!
Just bought mine from auction and surprise this sound appeared lol. Part incoming Monday thanks for the visual!
Great video! Hate how overly complicated BMW makes such small things.
Love the Wolf of Wall Street inspired sketch at the end 😂
I was hoping someone would catch the reference 😁
I’ve had my m235i for over a year now. Bro I thought this was just BMW cheating out on the middle console 😭bro ur the goat I swear
Thank you this video!Just had the same issue with my car, took it to the dealer and was told that it was covered with my EXTENDED WARRANTY.
2017 M240i started making this noise at 55,000 miles, I was afraid something was going wrong in the LSD diff... happy to hear from the mechanic it was just the emergency break clip.
Honestly love your editing! It's just such a nice watch, without being cringey
Thank you! 😁
Just wanted to say BIG thank you, i had this same issue, followed your video and got it sorted! Appreciate the time you spared to help others
30 thousand on a f30 and this started happening week 1 ago. thank you for this video my friend!
I thought the 400 I was just quoted was ridiculous
Safety tip 3:29, LET the jack hold the car too, in case one of the jack stand fails, you'll have at least 1 side that'll be able to stay up. Hoping it's not the opposite side that will fail, you can still use the central jack point if you can work around it.
i drive an m235 and they just told me today that it’s a $1100 job i’m like f that i rather just do it myself and surely enough there’s a video on youtube to show me how to do it😂😂😂 thanks brotha! 🙌🏼
Just had the rattling myself recently on my f30 320i and came across this video. Super helpful and will give this a try. Thanks!
Just a tip guys don’t use a plastic part again buy the repair kit from AGA tools (aluminum part)
Is that the one that is linked?
Or zip tye lol
Man I wish I read this sooner smh. Halfway through installing the plastic one😢
in my opinion i’d rather install the plastic 8$ one every couple thousand miles than pay 130 for for one
So wish I’d have seen this sooner, it’s been driving me mad for months! Now I know what it is, thanks!!
Awesome. My 2016 320i at 110k miles just started with this noise. I think I’ll have my local Euro shop do the job.
Thank you!
Did it work? I have the same problem
I’m having this sound right now and this video is perfect!! THANK YOU!!!!
Cheers!
Cut the clip to make it a C shape. Leave the original gasket on. Slides right in without removing exhaust or dropping the tank.
@@bboydradle huh, good thinking. Thx for the tip!
Wolf of Wall Street 😂. I loved the meeting part
Brilliant!! I have the same issue, perfect timing. Keep up the great work!
BMW dealer quoted me OVER $500 ($532) for this repair! Mostly labor, of course. So, thanks for this vid!!
Making it of plastic made perfect engineering sense. What an absolute ball drop by BMW. A couple of cable ties sorted mine out.
Did you have to remove heatsheiled and exhaust for this?
Yea do you need to remove all that if all i want is to use zip ties and hook it back up
It's amazing how I find several of these videos/post after I spent several months diagnosing this myself.
Forgot to add. It is a cheap fix at 8 bucks for the part and then another 10 bucks to ship. Scam!!! Actually installing the part is a bitch!!!
Haha you were right, and I’m glad that I had kept this in my playlist because … well… haha need I say more.
Thank you sir, will need to get this done. Hopefully will tackle it over the weekend.
Glad I could help!
I'm having this problem with my 435i convertible what would be the average repair cost
Got a quote today from a local mechanic. £35 I reckon they could be using the zip tie trick but I will be there the whole time so they can't do that 😂
i watched this a few months ago and im glad i did bc im now having this issue after doing a 45-130 pull
This was exactly what I fixed 2 months ago. Was gonna get the part replaced, however just zip tied the e brake line up and away and problem solved. Definitely not the best way, but the sound was driving me nuts!!!!
Did you have to remove everything like in the video?
@@seollenda I had to remove the screws for the heat shield to slide it out of the way. Used a few zip ties to follow the passenger side line, and secured the line to sections in the frame. Used maybe 4 total. I don't have an aftermarket exhaust, so this was the only way to take care of the noise. So far I have not experienced any issues of it coming back. Justin's way actually corrected the issue, however I am using a heavy duty bandage! 😆
Love that board meeting at the end 👍
One of the best down to earth youtubers out there
Great video sir, got the ramps under the back of my 2017 f30 right now. Away with the noise!! Thanks alot for this brother!!
to think a 1 year old video helped me fix my f30 love these videos
Thanks so much! This was the only fix I found for this. Been driving me craaaaazyyyy!
You just saved me thank you so much, I’ve been trying to get this fixed for so long
Just fixed my 320D F30 using this video. Thanks dude
I have a similar issue on my F30 340i. I thought this sound was coming from the diff or something. Thanks for this video
I fix this by putting rubber underneath the AC coil lines in the middle of the backseat over the tunnel for the transmission. Little ghetto but it works, didn’t know about the clips for a while until I saw a diagram much later but it’s solve the issue.
Thank you man fr! I was stressing cuz I jus bought my 2016 428i and didn’t wanna let go of it😂
So I just did this job on my 2014 for 435 I and I have some advice for you guys.
I’m pretty sure I dont want to remove the exhaust Or gas tank either thank you
I can’t post photos here but if you email me, I can send you some photos adewoskin@gmail.com
Thank you! My 2016 340i with 40400 miles just started making this sound yesterday 8/30/21.
Hey Justin I have a question I have a 328i 2009 with 100k mils and I’m trying to get 320i 2016 bmw with 100k should I do the trade. I need your opinion thank you 🙏🏽
