Dude this rattle just started happening to me a few weeks ago & it was driving me crazy. Random helpful videos like this is why I watch & appreciate all your videos. Keep up the good work!!
FYI -- there's another door area rattle source which for me was the case, not the door lock although it sounded very similar. The plastic strip that covers the interior ambient lighting on the door cards can sort of loosen a bit and rattle especially for cars that have a throatier exhaust. You just need to use your fingers or a plastic trim tool to push the trim back in in an upwards direction. Only saw one video documenting this and the rattle FINALLY resolved after doing this! The rear brake light (one on top behind the rear window) is also a rattle source -- the LED itself is on a plastic bracket that rattles against the bracket it connects to; fix is just stuffing some electric tape or anything to fit in-between the brackets so they aren't loose.
Yes! I too have the ambient light rattle on both of my front doors! I thought it was the door pins but after doing a fix very similar to this video I was quickly disappointed. From what I found the trim strip is glued or plastic welded on so I wasn’t sure how to solve the rattling. I have tried all sorts of applied pressure while driving but maybe I will give it another shot. I was thinking the rattle is the actual led strip vibrating in the housing and it needs to be braced/padded a bit somehow, much like the rear third brake light you mention.
Nice tip. Old school operating rods were threaded, and the button could be unscrewed. Don't know if the later models are like this. If so, it should be easier to remove the locking cover with the button removed from the threaded rod. Gentle heating of the locking cover (say with a hair drier at medium) should help soften the abs of the cover too. These polymers have a bad habit of getting brittle over time, but, the part costs like 50 cents so getting a couple spares when you order other parts is handy.
Great tip, thanks Jon! The rattle that annoys me the most is when playing music. Often listening to music outside when tinkering with the car but the panels sound like they are coming apart. Never found a fix
hello my friend, sorry for my English.. I have the same car, f30 but 320 . as I hear a lot of people with this car ( f30) has problem with wind noise at 50 miles or 80 km/h . I spent a money for tape or ANYTHING at the window,at the mirrors but it still listening noise. do you know something for this problem..
My X3 2019, drivers door rattle still driving me crazy, it's not the pin...but rattle def' coming from behind the door panel...but it stops when window is half way down....BMW want £175 (UK) just to take off the door panel, it's not covered by the warranty - :( - any adviceappreciated
I didn't have any felt or foam and didn't feel like going to the store to find some, so I sprayed the plastic pieces with an extra can of black Plasti Dip I had lying around. Thought it might work, because Plasti Dip is rubber and figured I could always take it off if it didn't work. Worked great and looks fine. Been about a year, and still no rattles. Just another idea for someone if you have Plasti Dip but nothing else. This isn't a new issue. Can't understand why a company like BMW doesn't fix this issue and save their owners a lot of headache.
I used 1mm felt tape (from Amazon) and the rattle was gone, but it's baaaack. Bumpy LA cloverleaf freeway onramps set it abuzz, really loading up the suspension is a good test for this rattle. Will try foam tape next.
Does anyone else’s side mirrors fold in at different speeds? Mine do. It’s not a big difference, but the left side is slower, enough to be noticeable. I don’t really care that they’re different speeds, but I’m worried that one of the motors is going out.
I learned solving rattles and clicks on my bycicle, thats why rattles on cars freak me out, because I know how tricky it can be, to locate them on a simple bike, not to speak about the complex car interior 😎
Whatcha doin to the beast? I have a 18 f80 comp, pure stg2+ w/ separate fueling custom tunes (93, e30, e60, e85) car is absolutely a monster but not being overkill 😈 Lmk!
Nice tip/trick to solve the rattle, nice work. How was the cars & coffee Saturday? I could not make it, had to drive a friend to drop off his rental, run a few errands and pick his car up from the body shop. Driving my good friend around helping him out, super gratifying. In back of my mind knowing I am missing the car show, bummed, lol. Family and friends come first.
Dude fucking nice video man! I rly rly love how you switch gears! Rly satisfying to hear and watch u drive the car man! You have such a nice car also, awesome sounds damn, its like a dream for me :D Thanks for sharing and also good video overall but i loved the driving more haha :O :P
@@ThicWhips Sorry, not pin. It's Lock Knob Trim Cover on door, p/n 51 41 7 316 859. It's broken, if i remember there is three little legs on this part that keep pin centered. One of those legs is broken and you can see that when compare old vs new part.

This is the best tip ever! I fixed my F32 door lock nob rattle following the video! Something a garage told me cannot be fixed!! Thank you!

Got the video on the ambient light rattle? Thanks.

Have the same issue. Might install sound deadening sheets on the door and the cards. Should yield better sound quality too.
It's probably the rocker panels. They buzz and rattle pretty loudly from outside when there's music with bass playing in my car.
The door pin rattle is the only thing that really annoys me in my F80, thanks for this

Good DIY, but the other solution is to simply lock the doors when you are driving, that way the door pin goes down, no more rattles

I ended up replacing with the new oem pins, no more rattles.
This is common when the door panels are removed from tinting.
I sprayed some WD40 Silicone Spray around the pin (generous amount) and it worked. Took less than 2 minutes.
I have some cracking noices around central console and the armrest... if you find how to fix it will be great :(
Did you find the fix?

What kind of foam tape am I looking for? Closed cell weather stripping tape seems to be the most common type. But there's others.
I used 1mm felt tape (from Amazon) and the rattle was gone, but it's baaaack. Bumpy LA cloverleaf freeway onramps set it abuzz, really loading up the suspension is a good test for this rattle. Will try foam tape next.
does it work also in e90s?
Any advice for the third brake light housing rattle? 😅
Same method probably
Beside a BBK missing, your 340 is perfect !! love it !

It rattles when the door is unlocked??
When you put these wheels on i thought i liked the 437ms more, but these are growing on me now 🔥🔥
Heading to the ole Home Depot today for some foam tape. I’ve put this off long enough.

We’re getting The rattle on our car fixed
First thing I always did for friends, black electrical tape on all door lock pops, so annoying.
Same way as this but instead of the foam electrical tape ?
@@jzallday102 I dont even take the housing off, just a little piece of black electrical tape around the lock nub and good to go.
@@thestimp1 oh dang good idea I’ll prolly do that thanks man
I tried doing this on my f30 a year ago and broke both sides lol
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO FUCK. I’ve had this issue for so long
omg have the same problem. thx
Real fix for this is to buy new pin from BMW, it's not expensive.
What would that change, the pin isn’t damaged or broken.

Can’t you just lock the doors while driving?
Nope. Still rattles
dude u can just pull out the pin, no offense
Why would that offend anyone lol
@@ThicWhips u never know in the good old internet :D
First
Can’t believe BMW still has lock pin. It’s 2023.
