You are a lifesaver. I believe the issue is that the hand brake cable somehow starts rubbing against the housing/piping (maybe due to a minor misalignment) producing a rattle/metal hitting metal sound. This problem started happening yesterday in my BMW 320i model and I was able to diagnose and fix it today, thanks to this video. One thing to note is that in my case, I fastened the left side of the housing/piping and about 70% of the rattle went away; then I fastened the right side and the sounds went away almost completely. I had my wife drive while I placed my finger on the housing to feel the vibration and it was significantly reduced after fastening both the housing.
So from what I can tell, these 2 metal pipes are the casings for the left and right hand brake cables. There is a mount attached to the gas tank, accessible from below the car, that can break and allows these cables to rattle against the crank shaft under acceleration. This solution would secure these from the top and hopefully prevent contact, and to solve by fixing the clip would also prevent this. Can anyone confirm? ruclips.net/video/gKMgR_ucJxM/видео.html
Thank you for the video! It worked for me for the most part. Only on WOT does it make the noise now. Still a lot better than it was before and beats paying $600 that the shop was trying to charge.
I’ve recently done this in my 2014 320i and it resolved the rattling, but I’m now getting a squeaking from the same area - sounds like maybe the cable ties rubbing. Any advice?
Bmw aka the rattle car. I had a nasty one around the instrument cluster. Drove me crazy was planning to sell my 70k 4 series again not normal that cars in this class rattle so much. On the past there was a website indicating all the known issues on BMw, basically it was the same info dealers had. I was surprised how many data ther was on rattles and noises. Bmw aren't you testing your cars? Finally BMW started a legal case and the website was forced offline. NEWTIS it was called.
There is a clip under your exhaust and fuel tank that will break over time and allow the cables to rub on the drives haft. This is a perfect hack as replacing the clip is cheap ($8 part) but ridiculously complex.
Just to let you know its actually a clip under the car that is broken and needs replacing, this is not the right way and they are not hoses they are your parking brake cables.
That’s what I thought artist but that’s not the case I went months thinking it was the break cable against the drive shaft . When I finally fixed it , the sound was still happening , and sure enough I fallows this videos instructions and boom problem solved !
3 weeks with that f"#$ng noise, i was becaming crazy! Totally lifesaver and moneysaver, just take care with the piece of plastic where you tie the zips, those are life knife i got a lot of small cuts!
Is this related to the handbrake cable clip? I just got to hear this kind of sound yesterday. Many of my F30 friends group said it could be the handbrake retaining clip. But the sound came under armrest as you mentioned. Thanks a lot.
I did that Definitely helps acceleration noise but with time there is noise when you hit every bump🫢 that aluminum think moving every time and i put 4 Instead of two to tight it up stringer Still doesn’t help
I did it, it helped but unfortunately the cables are still loose under the car and keep moving and making a knocking sound especially over bumps, I guess I have to solve it once and for all by replacing the plastic clip with a metal one.
Yeah I need to do this, I started noticing on hard turns and hard acceleration a noise from the rear HVAC vent. I also noticed that the plastic vent tubing seemed to be moving left/right with ease. So I shoved it further back to see if that would help as well.
Replacing that clip includes removing exhaust and dropping the gas tank which isn't something I'm capable of doing in a home garage. Sooo greatful for this hack!
The actual part, which breaks over time, is found above the exhaust. This video shows you how to swap it out. It is a little labor-intensive and you will need some tools and a few jack stands. ruclips.net/video/G8aT1yZiGUw/видео.html

Good lord man, I just bought an F30 and was about to return it because that sound was alarming the sh*t out of me. Thanks for identifying a fix!
Thank you!! Mine was even simpler to solve: didn't even need to cut the carpet, managed to pass the zip ties underneath. You're awesome!
It worked! I’ve been listening to this sound for a year. I recently decided to give it another try and look for a fix and BOOM! Thank you!
Thank you ! I thought it was my break cable retention clip scraping against the drive shaft for the longest time
You’re a money saver. I’ve been having this issue for a while. Thanks Bro!
Definitely Works. I tried it today and no more noise, really made my day thank you fosho

Perfect! Worked for my 2015 328. It took me 10 mins in total. What the heck do they hit that causes it to rattle in the first place?!?
I think they vibrate up and down and hit the "top" of the driveshaft channel

I think it is the parking brake lines that are flexing and making the noise, probably due to a broken bracket or clip
Is this for chirping / tweet , cricket noise ?
No, its a vibration/grinding noisem
I did that Definitely helps acceleration noise but with time there is noise when you hit every bump🫢 that aluminum think moving every time and i put 4 Instead of two to tight it up stringer Still doesn’t help

Should I do this with the handbrake engaged or disengaged?
Disengaged, you don't want tension on the cables.

Hy bro after the cable tie when acceleration does it have noise at arm rest
After you fix it you should not hear the noise
Going to try this tomorrow. Thanks

How do you properly remove the air vents?
Use a plastic interior trim removal tool and pry it off from the bottom toward the top. You can find a kit on Amazon for like 10 bucks.
have you had to replace the zip ties yet??
Nope, still holding strong!
