penny racers review on the nintendo 64 (also available on playstation) Recorded using an Ultra HDMI modded N64 console with an Elgato game capture HD60s capture card using a real game cartridge.
Does this retro nostalgic racing game fall into your top 5 or top 10 N64 games? What do you think is the best arcade racing game on N64, do you prefer this or Mario kart 64, Diddy kong racing, scars etc?So who's looking forward to the N64 Mini Classic console? Has anyone got the retro fighters brawler pad yet?
This is one of the things i really like about your channel, seeing N64 games that pretty much nobody knows, it is always interesting and cool to learn about those obscure N64 titles
thanks Nicholas, thats why I cover all games not just the big titles for views :)
@@n64glennplant i rented games a LOT.. moms wouldnt drop 60 on a game hardly ever for me :O so i tended to try every game for a week or however long it was.. so this guy alone has covered a lot of games that i remember fondly:P
@@n64glennplant remember an n64 game that had 4player coop comileans?

This was my main game to play when I was a kid, sure I had other games but this one had a very special place in my heart, I played it so many times, sure nowadays when you look at it without nostalgia goggles you can have a way bigger critical view on it, but I still think it's a charming little game, I loved the music, the cute cars, the colorful graphics, and I'd personally recommend to give it a try.
Awesome comment bro, couldn’t agree with you more
This game was awesome with 2 players back in the day. I never ran into the problems he mentioned of losing to the point you get your stuff stolen and it becomes too difficult to progress. Usually I was winning and taking the good stuff and progressing instead. Still an underrated game in my opinion.
If this was made in 2017, the car parts would drop randomly from loot boxes.
Trim Prism Rocket league
haha so true
I actually liked this game a bit. I got used to the gameplay and i actually like the music. Its definitely not amazing and i agree with your critisisms but every once in awhile ill pop this in if i want to play something weird/different. The Choro Q PS2 games are FANTASTIC though.
So are the ps1 choro q games
I havnt played much of the series but I think this would be one of the low points?
N64 Glenn Plant Yeah, definitely. I somewhat enjoy it, but its not very good, and its definitely one of the lowest points in the series.
@@frankwest6984 There's one on the Sega Saturn called Choro Q Park
Relived a part of my childhood!! I think we rented this game 5 times in a row 😂 loved it as a kid
Oh my GOSH, this game looks so cute! Look at how tiny the cars are!
yup!
It IS available, so do a search and you'll find it. Project 64 is the way to go on PC.
The ps2 version was so addictive and perfect for me.
from reading the comments this is probably one of the series low points
It's shame, because on paper, it definitely sounds like a game I would probably like, even though I'm not a huge fan of racers. Anyway, great review. Keep up the great work, Glenn!
thanks talon!
Loved this game as a kid
I was waiting for a new video soo much. Thanks!
Nice video, every time i see one of this i instantly go back to the 90s and feel like a boy again.
yeah any time im on n64 im like 16 again :)
This game was my favourite n64 game back in the day you have to remember that back then this was a pretty good game sure it doesn't stand up today but it was lots of fun back then
Yup. The Penny Racers N64 Game is bringing back memories. Since I was a kid. I like the Pontiac Firebird, and the two cars in the US cover art. 🚗 🥇
All that drifting constantly makes the game look a total pain to play.
its one to avoid for sure Larry
I'm still disappointed we never gotten Choro Q 64 2 aka Penny Racers 2 brought over to the west, but my biggest concern or reasons as to why is perhaps the low sales and harsh reviews critics gave it at the time and scarred off THQ for wanting to localize the sequel for a 2000 release (Part 2 came out in Christmas Eve of 1999)
I totally agree with that view
This was my favourite game as a kid I played it soooo much I love this game
Every game you review I slowly remembered I played. Back in the days of store rentals.
im slowly bringing your memories back - cool :)
I love this game. It's on par with the best kart racing games on the console.
really? whoa big statement right there although naturally id disagree but im sure nostalgia is playing a part for you?
Wow that handling lol
its all over the place and I love racing games too :(
I used to play this a lot with my cousin when we were about 5 or 6 years old, we both had N64's and he was a lot more into racing games. I'd still buy it just for its nostalgic value.
thats the only reason to pick it up again I think
The closest we have to a racer like the Choro Q series (which may be a bit of a stretch) is the Gotcha Racing series, which is mostly 2d arcade racers with random unlockable parts that makes progress a bit of a grind.
I tried playing this again on my N64 with "new" controllers that have fully working analogue sticks and every time I move the stick too far in one direction I just roll over..... 10/10 would nostalgia again.
Wow, I loved this game as a child, just thinking the game was difficult. Now I realise it's terrible design too. Gotta farm the correct tires lol.
You can do it!
Used to rent this one a bunch, and it was a big hit at sleepovers. But yeah, your experience does vaguely track with my memory. I seem to remember the difficulty not scaling well at all either, and I'd basically get as far as winning the first three races, and then get squashed for the next 2-4 races, and eventually that sisyphian cycle would get exhausting enough for me to tap out and change the game. Concept was dope, though, and I remember it being a lot of fun on multiplayer
This makes me incredibly nostalgic! Was my favorite 64 game
Did you ever play the sequel?
N64 Glenn Plant no!! I didn’t know there was a sequel!
It was japan only but still on n64 🔥
The ramen truck was my jam.
that thing with bots stealing your stuff is unforgivable, would have insta perma quit from that
Lol this game was so much god damn fun
I played this game a whole lot as a kid and actually loved it just as much as mario kart. I found multiplayer especially to be really amusing considering the options you have available with weapons when you learn how to use them in certain situations e.g using the weight weapon when seeing other cars (or the 2nd player) approach a bridge only to see them all drop into the water because they become too heavy to make the jump 😂. I agree with pretty much most of the criticism, (theres probs more you could mention 😅) I'd say in terms of difficulty, for me personally, i enjoyed that the game didnt give me the wins on a silver platter and actually made me work for it. Lottery made me feel like a boss when coming in 1st ("give me all yo shit" to the loser players kinda feeling 😂)Dont get me wrong...some of the stages are absolutely terrifying (like that stupid small bridge on the lava stage) but you become so much better at the game once you learn the little tricks, (pressing r button when you approach a sharp turn - makes it so you dont lose speed around a corner when timed correctly) making it ALOT easier to finish the game. Despite the criticism, I would definitely recommend this game if you're up for a challenge, like seeing abit of havoc, enjoy carving up a race course, like to make your little brother cry because you planted landmines in front of boost spots (Theres no way hes catching up), or if like to make your big brother give you a dead arm because you used smoke in front of him (watch him collide into a wall for days 😂) or just wanna find different ways to utilise weapons to destroy some shit! For me it was definitely one of the best n64 games to play multiplayer. Would recommend!
hello @N64GlennPlant just started falling your channel and I think it's really great, thanks for putting all those hours in producing these videos. Do you think you'll ever make a top 💯 N64 video if you haven't all ready? O and have you used the Retro Fighter N64 pad and if so will you do a review on it?
9:25 nice race track there BTW
Another irritating quirk of this game is some of the final parts and car bodies have to be "unlocked" in the most cryptic way possible. It's been awhile but I recall having to not touch any grass on a course to unlock a part (that is, if you finish in the top 3) and another was finishing a race when the clock stops on a certain digit. The game was fun, but getting 100% on this game was nothing short of infuriating. Luckily I still have a 100% unlocked save and courses I made from '99 still intact!
I actually finished this game last year. I liked it when i was a kid for it's parts management and map creator. The AI can be too hard though with it's absurd rubberbanding sometimes, for reference i was at the finish line and the AI zipped past me somehow... Good times, good times.
yeah the AI are just nuts at times and if you have a lighter model car you're all over the track if you get hit
I'm surprised that this game wasn't developed by Tamsoft, unlike the original Choro-Q/Penny Racers games on the PS1, although it does look like that it has several assets taken from that game. Oh! and for those who don't know, Tamsoft is a studio that is nowadays well known for pushing out Senran Kagura every year.
its not a studio I follow much as I tend to stick to ones ive liked previous work of
Loved this game
Letsssss goooooo eh fun when I was a little kid but I enjoy the soundtrack now nice video 📷📸

great review glenn :D
Not a great game ... but I did play this a lot. Strangely addictive.
kinda like micro machines to unlock all the cars :)
Oh dear. I think the part betting component as well as the stupid rolling punishment that happens when you turn too sharply would have caused me to throw many a tantrum as a kid. I'm glad I never picked this up. Great video as always.
yeah it takes away so much fun as its way unbalanced
I played the heck out of this game. Loved it!
I played this at the boys and girls club in the early 2000s good times
i actually played this game quite a bit back in the day and it has some incredibly rare parts you can get which can really stink if they get stolen from you, i wonder if it's available on an emulator?
Of course it is, check out Project 2.3.0 for easy setup with HD texture packs if your PC can handle it. With save states, no parts will ever get lost again 👍
Looks Really fun
Looks can be deceiving 😂
I think you still got to do the Japanese Eye for the second one of this unless i missed it
thats a good shout
You ever tried using the restart feature? Nobody forced you to lose parts.
how did you get these resloutions on the 64? is the mod hard to do?...
thats just how the n64 looks
Hm..I really remembered liking this game but watching your review made me think I might be remembering it wrong haha..that was rough just to watch let alone play. Looks like a ROM tester before committing on ebay.
Lol sweet! You can play as the original G1 Bumblebee and Cliffjumper!
I love the Wii Penny Racers. Is this worth picking up for my N64 since I like the Wii one?
Good review. Shame about the flawed upgrade-stealing mechanic. I feel this game was perfected with the second GBA title Choro Q Advance 2, known as Road Trip: Shifting Gears in the USA and Gadget Racers in UE. (not the first GBA game called Gadget Racers in the US and Penny Racers in EU, confusingly).
I remember seeing this game back in N64 magazines back in the day. I thought it sounded cool, but I never cared enough to get it, and the review were bad-mediocre at the time. Iirc it was said to have more than 100 cars.
Also, while you complain about the graphics, and the tracks do look bland, I like how the cars look. Those flat shaded super low poly cars with a small number of pixelated textures that look almost like stickers on some cars. I like it. :P
As for the question of disappointing games, my brother really liked the sound of MRC: Multi Racing Championship. It was ...not a great game, and also you couldn't delete the save data from it, meaning that once you beat the game once you couldn't play through it again. I think there was a cheat cartridge code to reset your progress.
yeah like I mentioned in the video, the cars are cool cell shaded but the tracks are a mess. I just wish they could have pulled full shading on the entire game
So my neighbor/friend used to have this game and we played this a lot! Our consensus is reinforced by this review, it had so much potential but shitty controls ruined this game!
One of my favs. Got my gf to watch. Best review voice
thanks Russell!
N64 Glenn Plant Np keep up the great reviews
Anyone wanting to play but put off by the part system switch take to on and swap to off. Also use racer 11 to unlock the two items otherwise impossible to unlock via other cars bodies
Some of the courses make me think of Mario Kart DS and Diddy Kong Racing, weird.
Yeah many others have commented feeling the same way
Ok. I feel the need to point out the flipping of your car or the lack thereof. Yes, you need the proper tires for each element but I noticed on the game footage (of whoever is playing) you never once flipped your car by hitting R. The game and it's sequel do have a game mechanic by timing the flips of your car by flipping it just before a tight turn. You can then counter steer and not slide around so much. Watching that gameplay and seeing you slide all over the place was frustrating and wondering why you never attempted to hit "R".
Had to look far too long to find this comment. This game was awesome once you figured out how weird it was.
Is this from the devs of the Choro Q series?
POOKISTAN Not really. Choro Q pretty frequently jumped from dev to dev, and thats why you get pretty different games each time.
Ah - I didn't know it bounced around between devs. More/less, the only game within that series that was compelling was the huge open-world racing RPG that was on PS2 - That allows you to look beyond all the sub-par aspects of the series due to the fact that it's so damn unique.
But, yeah - Wake me up when those devs make another one of their open-world RPG-esque racers, even if the dialogue doesn't make sense; The games are really not worth it without that...
POOKISTAN Road Trip Adventure is the one youre talking about, and thats my favorite one. They made a sequel to it that had an open world, but the world was MUCH smaller so its not AS good.(that one only got released in Japan and PAL territories).
I think the worst game on the N64 has to be Milo's astro lane Glenn that game was so boring and was not worth the price.
I don't think thats the worst but defo not one which is worth seeking out in a hurry
Weren't penny racers a toy? pull back motorized cars where putting a penny in a slot on the rear, made them do tricks
I didn't know Penny Racers is a Choro Q game as I've never seen it in action and only seen the western cover art. It does make me want to try it even though the game seems to be a dud. I wish the PS2 games were in english.
Pimpzilla there is an English version called "Road Trip adventure" for the PS2 i picked a copy up on amazon for £10
thanks for sharing great info in the comments, appreciate it when everyone helps each other thats what I like about this channel !
can you do a review of Monaco Grand Prix: Racing Simulation 2 Glenn.
glad to see another f1 fan!
I've never played this game or owned it, but it doesn't look like it's very good at all. I'll make sure to put this really low on my list of N64 games to buy (have to buy them all considering I collect N64 games).
I didn't have nintendo power until much later in the N64's life, so I couldn't really read up on what was coming out. I will say that we rented games every weekend from blockbuster and I definitely had some disappointing rentals. One that sticks out in my mind is Mischief Makers. Nowadays, I love the game to death, but when I was a kid I just didn't understand the game and really didn't like it very much because of my lack of understanding, plus I found the game really hard. I didn't know what I was supposed to do, how to do it, etc.
I'm sure there are more disappointing rentals I had. I just don't remember as that was a really long time ago.
mischief makers is cool but like a lot of treasure games they are unique and MM is especially unique in the controls.
NASCAR 2000 and F1 Pole Position 64 Review please Glenn.
noted!
This game looks fun!
looks can be decieving! wah hahaha
Just picked up a copy for cheap, so I'll have to see if I enjoy it. haha
After playing a bit of the game I must say that it's quite enjoyable for what it is. Even with the flaws there's no doubt that I would've enjoyed this as a kid.
fun game... I loved playing this back then, the AI were total dicks though....... I also didn't really like the "weight limit" on the starter racing tiers since it never seems like you can keep up with the AI racers without sacrificing a weapon or bumper for accel, tires, or performance upgrades.... unless you play the AAA mode, then good lord you're gonna have a bad time.....
The car customization in Mario Kart 7 and 8 are better than this game.
You should review mystical ninja starring goemon or goemon's great adventure/mystical ninja 2 starring goemon
game was good
Yo Glenn, what's your favorite racing game on the N64? I'm guessing...Beetle Adventure Racing?
Diddy Kong racing 👍
N64 Glenn Plant Cheers! Excellent choice! EDIT: but I meant to ask what's your favorite rally racing game on the n64? :)
What are good racers on the N64 that aren’t Mario Kart/Didy King racing?
Phreaker1997 Automobili Lamborghini, Roadsters, Beetle Adventure Racing, Rush 2, Stunt Racer, World Driver Championship to name a few
Extreme G, Extreme G 2, Ridge Racer 64, Hydro Thunder, Stunt Racer 64, Hot wheels turbo racing.
Top gear rally is a good one, give it a try once you unlock a few vehicles the game get pretty fun, and of course F-zero X , great game
Beetle Adventure Racing is my fave but it`s not multi player and don`t be put off by the title. It belts along!
Isleofwight Dave It has multiplayer, but it's limited to 2P only for race. You can play the demolition derby mode in 4P, though, which is always really fun with the right group of friends. But, yeah, I agree it's a great game.
I'm Just bought this game, but the japanese version, Choro Q. Its a pain in the ass try to understant each menu word...but I liked this game. There are some problems, but looks good.
If you can recommend a GOOD version of this game what should i go for?
Road trip or ChoroQ on PS2.
FlutteryFlower lol was just scrolling through the comments waiting for someone to mention road trip adventure for ps2 one of my faves! Never played this n64 one though
I can't but looks like others have!
Sounds like an object lesson in capitalism. The winners get their lives made easier whilst for the losers it just gets worse.
Deep for 9:40am mate! Still drinking my cup of tea over here 😂
Thanks so much for the thorough review of such a frustrating game. I remember trying to play this one every now and then, but stopping after 15 minutes or so because I just wasn't enjoying it. I really like most of the Choro Q games like Choro Q Park (Saturn) and my favorite Road Trip Everywhere (PS2), so I always figured I would eventually find some fun playing this N64 version. Now I know I don't have to waste my time. Thanks, my friend. Love the show!
see im not really into the series so I can't comment too much on the other games but this one on its own isn't one worth getting excited for IMO
I liked it but this ver and the cube one were soo slow...
for a small car style game I too expected them to be much faster
This wasn't made by EA, Was it? What about Blizzard?
Dev was locomotive and pub was thq in the West
How did you get hd on your n64
I have the ultra hdmi modded console
This game feels like a gacha racer.
Is it just me or do a lot of the race tracks look like Mario kart tracks
now you mention it....
It looks frustrating.
Hm... I really like you channel, but some of your reviews are way off the mark it seems.
This being one of them. I honestly feel like you never really "got" the game and failed to get enjoyment out of it on account of "playing it wrong".
Also, what I find curious are the technical issues you mentioned, as I can't help but wonder if this is a PAL thing. I own the NTSC version and it runs smooth as silk.
And, for being an arcade / kart racer of sorts, the physics are actually some of the best out there. This is one of those games that does truly need a high resolution analog input to function. You are "barrel rolling" quite a bit in the game, which happens anytime the analog stick is being held down more than ~60% and since it doesn't seem intentional, I wonder if you would like it better using a better controller, such as a retro-bit.
At any rate, love your channel, but man, seeing this gem get trashed really hurt. LOL
Like anything it’s just my opinion it’s not definitive as is the case with any review, some times I like and game and other times I don’t. Top gear rally bring a prime example 😃
@@n64glennplant Oh, I understand completely. I agree with most of your assessments, but there are a few games where your conclusions are head scratchers to me :)
This and RR64 being the 2 that stand out the most :)
And in both cases I wonder if a bad controller could have been a factor.
@@pernstar I like my controllers like I like my hookers - loose, hardly moving and on the verge of death 😂
@@n64glennplant Yikes. Well, to each their own, my guy. LOL
@@pernstar 😉 jokes aside, I mix between official controllers and hori minipad depending on the game - the retro fighters aren’t sold here in the UK and so when you add on the import taxes they’re super expensive
Not that the internet is hurting for videos covering Zelda, let alone Ocarina or Majora, but why haven't you covered them yet? Waiting for a particular subscription threshold?
ill be doing Zelda last, and its my fav game of all time. if anything I would have reviewed that years ago because that would lead more traffic to the channel but before then im happier keeping more die hard n64 fans who appreciate discussing the more unusual titles. I do throw in bigger games every now and again but I think im down to like 70 more reviews or something for western releases so Zelda will come soon enough
Saw clips of this years ago and thought that it looked frustrating as hell to play. Guess I was right haha
yeah I wouldnt recommend this one to anyone really, much better games in this generation do things cooler
I hate it when games have good assets but play like crap.
Major disappointment when I got this the box art and the initial presentation are great and then it becomes such a mess and really disappointing, I returned this using EB 10 day return policy
haha whoa I didn't know they did something like that
Yeah, it was a great well abused system that pretty much said if you were not happy with your purchase you could return the game and get store credit. I must have tried many games this way. I used it 1998-2002 ish. How they made any money like this I am not sure.
Oh dear, this is a no no for me. Thanks for the warning Glen!
you're welcome Dave!
This game looks frustrating to play.
It's extremely frustrating to play. I've tried to love it so many times, but it simply wasn't well thought out in it's design process. It looks nice, it sounds nice. Perhaps a child of the 90s who didn't know better, would have fond memories playing this, but for any serious play (aka play to win), forget about it. It's a waste of time and very little reward.
man, your reviews get harsher with age lol
Looks fine for a kids tittle
maybe im getting crankier in my early 30s :)
You're right about how ugly the game is. Just compare it to Need For Speed Hot Pursuit or Crash Team Racing
yeah, huge difference hey
It looks horrible to play!! And it's frustrating with terrible controls. No thanks. Maybe more of a novelty to have as a ROM in the Everdrive.
Frist
WOOHOO
I'm just going to skip my fair review of this game and just call it for what it is. Garbage (a waste of time and resources). Pure and simple. I'm just not one to forgive such flawed development decisions. This game sucked back when it came out and it sucks even more today. End of line_
