    It is impressive how quickly these planes stabilize when go-around full throttle is applied. And pilots should really never doubt that this is the action to take in moments of doubt.

      And if the A380 was not a success with 250 built units, don't get me started with the ludicrous 747-8 that has only managed to sell 48 passenger versions and 107 freight versions. It's like Boeing saw Airbus's bad decision and said "hold my beer, I can make it even worse" lol.

    A stabilised approach is measured usually at 500 or 1000 feet and also at 4 miles in my company. It’s criterion are speed, configuration, rate of descent, alignment with the runway and on the instrument procedure profile. Since being unstablised at the ‘gate’ is a mandatory go around it is likely that the JAL B777 was fully stabilised but performed a baulked landing due to gusts in the flare. Maybe someone who know way more about jets than I do can answer this question.
    Wouldn't be more efficient and provide much more control for jets to use electric motors (powered by the engines) to power the wheels while on the ground rather than using the jets engines? If it is practical for diesel-electric locomotives to do it, why wouldn't it work for jets?

    • @grumpyoldman7562
      @grumpyoldman7562 Год назад

      Electric motors would add more weight, more cost, more maintenance, and more parts mean that there are more parts that can fail. If the jet engines can move the plane around, why not save the weight, reduce the parts, and save the cost by not using electric motors? Diesel-electric locomotives use electric motors because they are much simpler and much more rugged than any type of mechanical gear-switching transmission to connect the diesel engines to the wheel. If they didn't use an electric motor they'd have to use some sort of torque converter type of arrangement that would be much more complicated, would cost a lot more, and wouldn't be anywhere near as simple and rugged. Plus, electric motors have full torque right from the start, which is important for getting something as heavy as a locomotive moving from a dead stop. Adding electric motors to a plane would be adding additional motors that are only used to move the plane around on the ground. In a diesel-electric locomotive, the electric motor isn't an extra part. It's part of the main drive system and is used every time the locomotive moves. It's a completely different situation.
