The Pantanal: the largest tropical wetland on earth. Located mainly in Brazil, it’s home to a number of iconic species - like the giant otter, an enormous member of the weasel family that can grow to an amazing 1.8 meters long. Giant otters are expert fishers, highly sociable, and not short of a dance move or two… In our latest video, we explore their lifestyle - but also look at the threats to their habitat that make them an endangered species on the IUCN Red List.
↘️ Want to help to save the giant otter?
These gentle giants are urgently in need of protected areas, more research, and conservation action. Check out international giant otter projects below:
🦦 Save the Giants
Save the Giants is a non-profit, community-driven conservation organization that's dedicated to preserving wildlife via a multi-disciplinary approach. The focal species for Save the Giants is the critically endangered Giant Otter.
Currently fundraising to build a science center in the village of Yupukari. This center will be a hub for all the conservation work Save The Giants is doing in the field, a place to store field equipment, a place for researchers to stay but most importantly a science center for the entire community to have access to more educational opportunities in STEM. It will have computers for use to the community and for entering critical data to the STG otter database, a wet lab and an opportunity for them to educate the guests about the important conservation projects taking place in communities.

🦦 People's Trust For Endangered Species
A passionate team of volunteers and staff is supporting local eco-tourism initiatives to advance Amazon lake conservation efforts. The Peru giant otter project has established a collaboration with the indigenous community of Isla de los Valles. Together they're focused on saving the local giant otter population.

🦦 Wildlife Conservation Research Unit
The mission of the giant otter research team is to understand if and how the demography, behavior and health of giant otters are affected by the recent changes to their habitat. An important component of this project is the involvement and engagement of local indigenous communities in conservation efforts.

“The otters are a family...” aww
“And they work together, to spread their urine all over the fresh mud.” oh
Special family bonding tradition! ;)
The family that pees together, bes together.
Thanksgiving get togethers are a festive time of the year
Otter: Pisses on some mud
Other otters: I sense a disturbance in teh force, We should turn back
Fun fact: otters belong to the same family as honey badgers and wolverines
Love it!
I thought so
same instincts. aren't easily scared
You got that from tierzoo lol
@@Jikavi So what if he got it from somewhere, atleast he tell us and give us a new knowledge, unlike you bitching about people giving us knowledge, gtfo bud, we knew things about animal because of other people knowledge and research, or even our own research
I'm Brazilian, I want to go to Pantanal someday to see them with my own eyes, I love them (here in Brazil we call them "ariranhas"). They're not cute as river otters or sea otters, but I love them cuz they have a fearless spirit 😍😍😍😍
The Brazilian name looks cooler
@@maxfreefall8393 Shut up, stop saying garbage. Brazil is one of those countries that still has 80% + or - of its forests intact and protects it. The fires are seasonal, a normal thing. Search it up before you speak.
@@dcee1412 it is indeed 🤗
@MaxFreeFall uh uh, wrong! Pantanal is a region that is very hot which leaves the grass and leaves very dry, prone to catching fire when they come together. add more winds and sun to it and you’ll see the damage. Plus, the soil needs ashes to be reborn beautiful and healthy in the rainy season. The thing is, they need the seasonal fires.
I love them, seen them close in my farm, but trust me... don't get near them. Vicious creatures!

Y’all act like the earth is going to explode in 10 years the earth has been here way longer than humans and has been through far worse than what happening and it’s not the animals or saving the planet we should be worrying about it’s us we have only been around for a couple 6 million years while the earth has been around for what 4.5 billion years you really think that the planet is endangered when the fucking dinosaurs went extinct and they didn’t cause global warming or make oil Factories no not at all the human race is going to die before the earth even does that is something you need to be put in perspective
in Portuguese they are called: ariranha
10 otters liked your comment 🦦
it's not portuguese it's tupi
@@nickrodriguez3850 Yeah but we speak portuguese
ariranha grande
This in the Amazon region, and its tupi language, in other region is called *lontra*
They are such extraordinary predators that In Brasil we call them "ariranha" wich means water-jaguar in Tupi ( the native who inhabited all Brasil's coast before the portuguese first arrived).
1:08 the JAG-U-AR
Right. Wtf lol
I noticed that and then looked for a comment about that. That had to be the narrator trolling.
2:33 it takes a mix of cha-cha-cha and disco xD hahahah LOVE THE NARRATION
10 points for the otter family! 💃🏽🕺🏻
Did you know that adult giant river otters eat around 3 kilos of fish a day? 🐟

I've live there for 12 years, 20 years ago, in the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul, Campo Grande. I've seen so many hyacinth macaws, tucanos, capivaras, and otters. You can even see them in parks in the middle of the city, it's AMAZING!

This channel always spread the beauty of mother nature . Make videos about endangered species of India , it will create more awareness to the world about India's endangered species.

Those animals looks cute but trust me they're furious as a wolverine. Fight against Alligators and Jaguars. Congrats, from a BR person 🤝🏻🇧🇷
Yep
0:13 Otters look like they're using orca spotting technique for seals...that jaguar looks nervous.
0:16 "Hey guys... if we all swim to the shore at the same time, made we can wash him of that log with a BIIIIIG wave!"
Other Otters: how do you know that?

Cute and very intelligent. They need to be saved!
0:45 I remember that meme where this guys hang out with almost every animal even an alligator lmao.
Yes, there's one recorded case where an otter family fights a caiman to death. 😬
Giant otter: I'm a alpha predator.
Orca: that's cute little guy.
Otter fam: are you have chosen death
"The giant otters aren't even afraid of jaguars."
*So big river rats scare big river cat?*
Not sure, they understand to stay away, they are a Jaguar.
They are not rats or related to rats.
I’m from Brasilia. They have some giant otters at the city’s zoo. When I was a kid, a man felt into their enclosure... the was bitten to death.

You're absolutely right! We need to change our behaviour and start to protect their last remaining natural habitats. 🦦🌎
Brave otters? More like brave Jaguar for even trying to mess with the otters

I agree, I love Otters, they are very intelligent, for a sea/river creature. Good on you Otters!
They're really smart and they do have excellent hunting strategies and a complex social life. 🦦
@Agh Yaat
Sadly, humans are really the biggest threat to the giant otter.
But there're also many humans who are putting so much effort into great otter conservation projects. We've linked some of them in the description above.
Ariranha ~ "Ottie + raña" (Braz. Portuguese from the Tupi-Guarani) ... cause if you tell people you're looking for "lontras de rio" they'll think you've missed your flight to Rio de Janeiro 😅👍🏽
