Within Temptation was one of the first bands I listened too when I got into metal, I still love their stuff. I think his wife would like them as well. I recommend the song Memories, it's hauntingly beautiful I there are almost no reactions too it on RUclips.

I just came across this video and I have a few things to say. Jinjer is an amazing band, currently still my favorite. Tatiana is vocally and lyrically untouchable, every song tells a powerful story. You should show your wife perennial live a wacken, and judgement and punishment one take vocals. And finally dude looks and sounds like Chad Prather, for a few seconds I seriously thought it was him.

I’ve played guitar for over 30 years now and in that time I’ve used allot of different effects on my signal. That is absolutely not her real voice. I know distortion when I hear it and there is definitely distortion on her microphone. She also has some reverb and some sort of modulation effect. Probably a detuned chorus.
I don't think she'd use that kind of voice without a mic. The growls are actually not very loud, the loudness feeling comes from the style and amplification.

Perhaps a listen to the video for their song "Teacher Teacher" would level the playing field a bit. Most of us had a teacher growing up that acted more like a tyrant than someone we should be learning from. It's a great video. Tatiana is an incredible singer, and your wife brought up a great point. That voice coming out during the first fight, but it gets even better. Think your children would behave if that voice was hurled at them when they acted up? How about meeting your child's first date at the door and having that voice instruct them that if any harm befalls your child, it'll not end well for them. All that said, Tatiana is actually a big sweetheart and she learned to do the growl all on her own. The tattoos are a bit of a cover, and this song was 100% reflective of her, as she's a Pisces. The lyric, "A coward is shivering inside, today I'll be a friend of mine who swallows suffering with smile." is rather telling in that she's a performing artist and has to "own" that stage when she's out on it but she's likely nervous about crowds, while having to wear a tough facade or a smile in order to give that appearance to everyone else. This song was an introduction of sorts for Vlad, their new drummer. He knocked it out of the park, as did everyone in that room. Other suggestions are the videos made by Five Finger Death Punch, specifically "Wrong Side of Heaven", and "Gone Away", though "Wash It All Away" is a good one if you'd like to see what they look like on stage.

So, as to explain how she is doing that is basically her vocal cords are open and all the folds above it flap around to create distortion--it is a very similar technique to throat singing. It is possible for anyone to learn, but it of course takes a whole lot of practice. As for my recommendations, I suggest "Crack of Light" by Vintersea. It is about the same level of heaviness but it is a lot more groovey and the transitions are smoother. It is definitely a must listen song! If you want something a bit lighter, I suggest their song "Illuminated" I also suggest "Unending Sorceress" by Unlucky Morpheus because it some killer riffs and an epic violin solo. Their song "Cadaver/Revadac"(it is technically two songs but it is more like a part one and pat two) is also amazing and also their song "angreifer" is also amazing. A similar suggestion is "And plague flowers the kaleidoscope" by Ne Obliviscaris because it also has an epic violin solo. I also suggest "Drive into the light"(2019 live) by Passcode because it is a very interesting song that mixes J-pop with metal.... A band that does a similar thing is Ladybaby, and their song "Riot anthem" is in particular good. I also suggest "Remnant in time" by The Agonist because it is a very dynamic song and has great piano. Another great song by them is "Orphans" I also suggest "In maidjan" by Heilung because even though it is technically not metal, it uses certain elements of metal and has some nice throat singing. I also the live vocal playthrough of "Abaddon" by Monochromatic Black because Tanya's lows are even more impressive than Tatiana(the vocalist of Jinjer) If you want to confused, I suggest "Ieud" by Igorrr If you want to dive into the swamp(pun intended) I suggest "Recreant" by Ogre packet slammers If you think you are ready for it, I suggest "Swinocologist" or "Blasphemian" by Infant Annihilator

I have a nice suggestion for Halloween, the first music video by Dreamcatcher, Chase Me. It's a korean girl group, but instead of a cutesy summer bop some would expect these girls have a metal vibe. The video is the first in a mysterious story, called the nightmare arc. You'll probably want to see and hear the sequel Goodnight right after! Hey, a six and a half from an Husband-Ambush-Ear-Attach like Jinjer isnt so bad. There's hope for you yet. (j/k) I am a professional head-n-neck physiology junkie (professional grade= DMD) and I am fascinated by not only how this sounds, but how it is produced. I've already got a fairly good false-fold scream... the sheep on our farm scatter when I uncork it, and I always have it ready because of the cougar that's been prowling around. (I gotta rely on the growl and a Tikka until my 450 Bushmaster arrives.) Please give the growls and such a second and third chance. Maybe try some Unleash The Archers (Awakening, or Tonight we Ride), or maybe a little Amaranthe (Boom!1, or Archangel) I'm not sure of your wife's preferences, but I'm sure we can find something in Metal that she would like. (hold off on Epica for a bit... a classical/operatic voice like Simone's nees some preparing for, the the music is insanely good). Yer a cute couple. Keep it up. There's room for everyone in metal. I have a nice suggestion for Halloween, the first music video by Dreamcatcher, Chase Me. It's a korean girl group, but instead of a cutesy summer bop some would expect these girls have a metal vibe. The video is the first in a mysterious story, called the nightmare arc. You'll probably want to see and hear the sequel Goodnight right after!

(I gotta rely on the growl and a Tikka until my 450 Bushmaster arrives.)
Please give the growls and such a second and third chance. Maybe try some Unleash The Archers (Awakening, or Tonight we Ride), or maybe a little Amaranthe (Boom!1, or Archangel)
