- Gympie might just be the most oxymoronic place you've ever been to. It should be economically and culturally rich, but instead it's more akin to a beggar on the highway trying frantically to get someone to let him wipe their windscreen. It smells like that too actually, come to think of it. So how did Gympie end up like this? Let's find out.

As someone who grew up in Gympie, I can attest that The Amity Affliction is indeed the biggest thing to come out of Gympie.

Now that is interesting. I used to pass through Gympie from either direction and have "known" it for something like 50 years. Someone once asked me what it was like and I swear I said the following: "Well, it's kind of a strange place. It has this air about it of "who am I, why am I here...?" It's now 20 years ago that I last saw it, but from what you are saying, it seems that it hasn't changed much.
You pretty much conveyed my thoughts perfectly as someone who has been living in this dogshit town for several years.

The rattler is actually a lot better now that the line is half as long. By the third hour of the trip you've had enough which is good because that's when the train pulls back into Gimpy station. It's a nice day out of wine/beer/cheese + lunch. Well unless you buy a cheap seat, then it's just 3 hours of coal smoak and scenery.

I’ve been through Gympie several times over the past few months, and I’m pretty sure barely anyone would ever visit once the Bypass is open.
Doesn't matter it costs a large fortune to live in Noosa/Sunshine Coast/Nambour they are all heading north so Struggle Town's got a new life for it mushrooming now expensive land and house packages on small arsed blocks of land just like the rest of South East Queensland.
Let's hope it stays that way. I'm stopping in next week.

Gympie is also the poor shaming capital of oz. Where the locals may not be overly rich, but have a very dim view of their fellow poorer folk. lol I was staying in gympie for a night while passing through to brisbane and a flash flood came. I was stuck there for a whole week, thank god the house had water tanks because the town actually turned off the water supply and electricity for the whole week. I cannot believe I considered settling down there..

My pop and nan lived in Gympie, life was good for them, with the exception of one specific bloke who liked walking up and down their street, staring into houses. The bastard eventually broke in and stole a ring and necklace my mum bought for them. Non could be done because of the special status of his category of people.
