River Phoenix was one of the greatest..since a very young age . Such a loss.. his brother Joaquin only became well known own much after Rivers passing. He died in front of The Viper Room on the sidewalk in Hollywood . It was devastating to all. Gets harder as time goes on and realize how many more amazing movies he would’ve made . Makes me cry whenever I see this performance . Vern is Jerry O’Connel
Such a great film. Stephen King has such a good way of portraying that sense of half-in and half-out of reality that comes with being kids, and the little adventures that we all miss as adults. Sometimes I'd give anything to be able to go and hide in a treehouse with my mates and leave the adult world behind for a day.
I first watched this movie with my older brother when I was 8 years old and I can't think of a single book or film that has imprinted itself on my childhood and life more than this one. Sincerely.
Another great coming-of-age movie I highly recommend for a reaction is The Sandlot (1993). Just as moving, but a lot less somber, and leaves you with a feeling of nostalgia and contentment.
I went to this in the theater, but it was an old army building with dirt floors and actual benches to sit on. We were all rowdy and basic teenagers, but from the moment this started to the end I think everyone in the theater probably breathed once every ten minutes. So quiet you could hear a pin drop in the dirt, lol. We were all silent all the way home, and just said "Bye, see ya Monday". in quiet voices.
He's undoubtably wonderful in this film. I think many people have the same reaction at the beginning of the story and I'm sure it was by design. The audience initially writes Chris off as being "no good" just like everyone in his life. We only see his true character emerge through Gordy's eyes and interactions with him. Brilliant storytelling, brilliant acting, brilliant directing.
14:17 ray brower alive smiling between the donnelly twins When asked King said Ace and Eyeball probably would have tossed Gordies hat on the ground around the next corner. I like to think Its a small town so Im sure it ended up in one of those shops and the next time gordy walked by someone popped out and said hey kid , you lose something ??
This is a movie that is 'Not to be missed", so I am glad you are watching it :) Great movies are the kind that you can watch again and again and still love.....This is one of them :) Hope you will like it....the "R" rating was a sign of the times, I think....(when the movie was made)....I don't think it would get it today :)
Obviously, you aren't recognizing all these kids who grew up to have huge acting careers. "Chris" River Phoenix died young from a drug overdose, but the others are all still around. Even the ahole blonde older kid, Kiefer Sutherland. And the director, Rob Reiner, was "Meathead" on the tv show Archie Bunker, but shows here his true calling was directing movies. He had some great ones. You should google all the actors... just so you know that you KNOW them all.
Don't forget corey - he's extremely well known, forget his name but he was in a lot of movies and now on the talk - until Dec. River Phoenix is quakeens brother - yes I'll have to check the spelling
Stephen King said at the time of this movie that it was autobiographical: All that was made up was the device of the hunt for the body." In King's own words then, Stand by Me is based on his own life. Even the story of a child getting hit and killed by a train may have been inspired by a real-life King tragedy.
Some of the best child acting you'll see in any movie. You can see why they all went on to be successful. RIP River. ✌
River Phoenix was a phenomenal actor in everything he did and one of my favorites way back when. RIP
“No, Ace. Just you.”

One of my favorites. Great story. Hits deeper now then it did way back when. Weird someone is always chopping onions when I watch it.

👏🏻👍🏻
The saddest part of the movie was when Vern dropped the comb into the river.
