Dmitry, this whole event was just awesome, wish the strict press were still included in weightlifting competition. Gregor, thanks for posting these videos.
This is so impressive. I'm trying to work up to 102 kg on a push press and I still have about 8 -12 weeks to go. My strict is only about 72kg. I turn 51 tomorrow so progress is slower but I look at these freaks for inspiration)
Close, but it wasn't a muscle clean, it was a no contact power clean. 17:04, you can see the knee bend to get the weight up. There are no knee bends after extension in a muscle clean.
Great concept. It would be awesome for the person on the mic to cue each lifter by saying "set" in which the lifter brings the bar to the rack position, then say "lockout" so that the lifter physically locks out knees before executing the strict press. Some lifters got away with a bit of leg drive on their lifts, some lots others not so much but this would be an awesome way to level the quest for the strongest strict press.
I suspect what you observed was why there was so much controversy back when this was an Olympic lifting event and that's one reason why they dispensed with it. Lots of arguments between referees and coaches about whether athlete so-and-so did or did not have their knees locked out when they started to press overhead, etc. I can almost hear the arguments/debates in my head.
Eleirbag Irodapsar yeah there were some worse ones as the video went on, especially in regards to the clean but the presses looked clean af for the most part
I like to see this (strict press events), to see how strong weightlifters are, about brute force! While snatch & clean & jerk are also a lot of technics (despite they require, of course, deadlift, squat, shoulder press skills). It's sad "clean & press" is no longer among the weighlifting competitions. Would have been better to allow it but unvalidate bad press by referee depending on back angle (for people who bended too much their back in order to include more "pectoral power"). Just like bench press where people bend like an arc of circle and press (crappy bench from my opinion) on a very short amplitude is allowed, I do not see why clean & press could not be... Weird decisions from people in charge!
@@hiscik1362 bench has its place in powerlifting. The press will probably also become really fishy with the lower back bends like it was with weightlifting imo
4:35 I'm surprised that Torokhtiy, a 105kg olympic gold medalist who has snatched 200 in training, is having trouble with that weight while a bunch of random no-names (like the guy immediately after him, or the guy at 6:34) seemed to press it much easier
There seems to be not much correlation yea. Lu also says he can’t press 100kg but has jerked well over 200kg from the rack. Torokhtiy also BTN Snatch Grip Push Presses something like 240kg. So not much “pressing” going on there clearly!
@@goodoldtom Lu is on the record claiming that he has jerked 230 kg from rack. I find it hard to believe, but Lu doesn't seem to be the lying / boasting type.

Agreed. And as you can see, the strict press event in Klokov Power Weekends always get the most views by far. Not a coincidence. The Press, the clean & press is the ultimate display of strength.
There were too many inconsistencies in enforcing the rules and sometimes even in the rules themselves. It is an incredible event because it tests true strength.
I train shoulder press 3x per week. It has taken me 19 months ( new to lifting )to get 82.5kg for 3x5 reps. I can only add 2.5kg to that 5 reps once a month or maybe 6 weeks... but it is going up!
He walked on both of his last two presses , would not have passed in old competitions. However he did press it in a stricter manner than thye did at the end before the press was eliminated after the '72 Olympics.
In competition your feet must stay still from when you start to press until the ref tells you to put it down. so even if you didn't walk while pressing, if you move before the down signal it's still no good.
Klokov press just over 330 pounds 151 kg great press for now a days Olympic lifter as they no longer need pressing strength for snatch and c&j. Klokov did a lot of bodybuilding and looks impressive and has got into crossfit especially with now banned lifters such as Olga Zubova an absolute star in 75kg class that is finding it difficult to go from couple rep movements to endurance.
this was awesome. I love it for a competition idea. personally I would have made it a muscle clean followed by a strict press because that's way more strength orientated and opens up the comp for non Olympic weightlifters, like strongmen. also because they don't require high amount of technique and have a smaller learning curve you could dish out challenges to top level bodybuilders and powerlifters to help the comp grow
If you're talking about the leaning back, that was the reason they took the lift out of the Olympics. Lifters were doing that with 500+ pounds. They bent back so far it looks like they actually squeeze themselves under the bar.
The term “clean” refers to a way to get the bar clear of the floor and up to the shoulders, without soiling the bar by touching the body on the way up, as required by the rules in place several decades ago. when I first read this from starting strength, I was like:" Rip, WTF are you talking about? how are you supposed to get the bar to your shoulder without it touching your body once? It was a great time. Look up Leif Jensen pressing around 170kgs in the olympics of 1972 at around 82kg bodyweight too. The press is such a badass lift. It's great that guys like Klokov bring it somewhat back in fashion.
Does anyone know if he is in the front rack position when he presses? I can press pretty good, but if i do it from my front rack i hurt my shoulders very badly. I rewatched the replay many times but couldn't find out how he does it.
He is not. He catches the weight in a power positon after the clean (power clean) with elbows almost vertical to the floor. Strict pressing setup is different from push pressing or from jerking.
