    On this episode I decided to show #ProjectSnowman some love…needed to replace the air tanks to fix the leaks so it would hold air and release the brakes. Then I drove it into my garage to begin removal of the old headache rack. Just can’t have something on the truck that wasn’t in the movie. Was also fun to grab a few gears and jockey it around a little

If you haven’t seen it yet there’s no excuse as it’s now available on Netflix “This vehicle happens to evidence, val-u-bull evidence that’s gonna convict a maniac”

    "Gotta stop over at the choke-n-puke to get fred a hamburger. He's lookin a little thin in the skin if ya know what I mean." I grew up on that movie. What a classic!!! Jackie Gleason was absolutely hilarious. This is a cool tribute project.

    That canister filter is a secondary oil filter called a 750 Luberfiner. If you look behind the frame rail on the right side of the engine there is a spin on oil filter on the bottom of the oil cooler.

    In my dad's old R model Mack that had the red, yellow and blue buttons, the blue one was tractor parking only, the yellow was truck and trailer combined. When you pulled the yellow button, blue would pop out automatically. You had to push in the yellow first, then blue in that order to release the brakes.

  • @ronthompson3525
    @ronthompson3525 4 года назад +1

    Those old trucks with three valves, the yellow and blue have to be in the bobtail. Red is trailer only. Blue is tractor,yellow it parking for both and the red is trailer supply. Old trailers with no spring brake relied on air press to hold parking brakes and then air to release the brakes. So if you had a old trailer and it would roll trying to hook it up you’d have the air it up then the parking brakes would hold.

    • @TwinStix
      @TwinStix  4 года назад

      Ron Thompson yup that’s correct but unsure why the yellow didn’t release the tractor park brakes like it should of and when combined with the blue they finally let off ... somethings not right as my Pete releases with just the yellow and this truck did as well up till now 🤔

A 359 in drivable but quite bad condition (as in project snowman but without the leaks) will set me back around 30 000 canaidian dollars due to them beeing so rare here in sweden. Yup, gotta love religious air tanks. To most guys who love to wrench there's only two times you have grit in you teeth, it's when your relaxing on the beach or rolling on the creeper under a truck. The head ache rack looks much better on the back of your trailer...lol You definitely have a project with that old girl, a good set of heavy jack stands inside the shop and go to town on it. As nice as it would be to have a twin bay shop with a pit in one side and lift beam on the other, just being inside for most restoration jobs is always nice. Have fun Sir, keep safe and we will catch you on the next video, Cheers!

    The reason it doesn't have a fan clutch is because it has shutters, but they appeared to be stuck open which is a common problem. It's also very hard to get replacement shutter stats that are any good. On my 359 I replaced the shutter stat with an air cylinder that is controller with a temp switch and air mag valve set at whatever temp you want the shutters to open. Also on that oil filter, it's a "750" which is commonly called a Luberfiner 750. Yours appears to be a Fleetgaurd, the way to tell them apart is the fleetgaurd has a flat top and the Luberfiner has a dome. They can be configured as either a full flow or a bypass. I usually keep the full flow spin-on and swap the 750 over as a bypass filter.
    Love an A model! Can't wait to see this as it goes along.

    I believe the air brake is correct. My old make is set up that way. The yellow valve should apply both tractor and trailor. The blue is to release just the tractor and red for trailor. You do have to depress the yellow valve and whichever other valve you wish.

    The blue button is suppose to open a valve that supplies the tractor (yellow button) with enough air to release the brakes long enough to pull out it out from under a trailer or push it in a shop, etc.😎

  • @MrFitbikeco10
    @MrFitbikeco10 4 года назад +1

    You can eliminate that blue valve all together. Its an emergency air valve suppose to hold just enough air to release the brakes in a pinch. Just follow the lines down to the tanks and plug them that’s what I did. Then plummed the red/yellow as normal

    The tool is called a needle scaler. They do not work well for removing paint. They shine on metal with flaky rust and pitting. They also take alot of air to run. If you don't want to worry about silica try "Black beauty". It actually works better than sand it is a byproduct of coal power plants.

  • @minerma
    @minerma 4 года назад

    Needle gun is the tool you mean for removing paint. I'd stick with sand blasting, change the medium used to blast and get a better face mask if you're worried about dust. Even hire a big compressor and blaster, do it all in one hit. Needle gunning is extremely loud and slow to use and you won't get into all the nooks and crannies like blasting will.

    An idea for your snowman fuel line/hose cross-over line (if you haven't already addressed): use a piece of electrical conduit (big enough to run the line with a wrap with another hose for wear protection, through), flare the ends out. Then use a couple of pieces of flat strap metal to fasten to the chassis, run down to the conduit, bend/wrap hooks around the conduit and weld the straps to conduit. This works way better than the original angle iron factory setup (flexes with the chassis, this doesn't rub/wear through bolts & angle iron). My 89 year old Dad's idea. We did ours that way in the 80's, works & looks great. By the way, the old trucker is still running down the road still a owner operator, has a 6 axle semi dump trailer rig - even doing 14 hour days consistently. Heck, he still mounts, down to the rim his 22.5 tires (won't pay $40 each to the tire man), says he can do one in an hour "easy" & he's worth 40 bucks/hour! He finally purchased an air blast can to set the beads, instead of using the "starting fluid match 💥 explosion trick"...

      We sold the old Jimmy Astro 95's, Inational's and a Diamond Reo we had these set-ups on years ago, ie... no pics saved. I'll make up a diagram of the idea & send. It's a simple project and for a classic truck you aren't running/working full time you can just run the cross over hose through the conduit tube, it'll last many years, if the line is heavy duty, verses just rubber (ours had braided shielding on the exterior of the line).
      Hey, are you a member of the ATHS (Antique Truck Historical Society)? It's a great club, bi-monthly magazines, local clubs (although I don't know where you are in Canada) and a yearly national show. We had members from BC & AB bring some awesome rigs down to our Nat'l show in Oregon a few years ago. This year's national show is scheduled for June 3, 4 & 5 in Harrisonburg, PA, of course it'll depend on Covid....

    Needle scaler is what you were thinking of. Quick thought. How about one of those single bay carports to but up to your garage door then transfer your garage door to the single bay.

    The blue and the yellow have to be in for the tractor brakes if I'm not mistaken and red is for the trailer that's the way the old R model Mack's used to be

    You should of filled the air tank up with shop air before starting the truck to check for leaks. Lol! Love his it started!!
    Air nibbler is what you were referring to. It's hard on your hands. Good for small jobs. You can get them from crappy tire or princess auto. I'm from Ontario.

    On our Mack you have to push in the yellow and the blue buttons to release the brakes. The yellow automatically applies all of them but it won’t release all of them.
