Smokey & The Bandit Tribute Truck Ep.25 Was the Movie Truck Brown???

On this episode I continue with the ongoing restoration of this 1979 Kenworth W900A truck to turn it into a tribute movie truck to the one used in the 1977 classic movie Smokey and the Bandit with Burt Reynolds, Jerry Reed and Jackie Gleason. If you haven’t seen it yet, what are you waiting for??? “You dumb cowboy, you know truckin’ Coors beer east of Texas is bootleggin’ … this here’s Georgia son”
On this episode I start off sharing some footage of the concrete floor for my new shop being prepped and poured … turned out amazing - just need to wait a month now for it to cure. Then when I got rolling on Snowman I tackled the final prep and decided to paint a test color on the back of the cab. Now many folks will tell you that the truck in the movie was a simple black, but I don’t believe that is the case. I’ve done a lot of research on the web and from what I found the correct color was “Coffee Black” ie a black base with a tint of brown along with the gold stripes. I tried to get the right color cross referenced at CMAX in Edmonton but ended up with a more chestnut metallic that’s just not right. OH well, back to the pain shop for something closer and blacker. After that I decided to start working on prepping the cab for the new interior and floor the DayCab Company provided.
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for all the comments, suggestions, and support!
Keep in mind, I know a little about a lot but not an expert in anything … just doing the best I can, learning as I go ... I do all my own stunts

I think that color is spot on perfect ! Years ago I saw the original truck 1980’s and what I remembered was it being Dark Brown and the paint changed in different lighting ! At night it looked black and a cloudy day it was drown and sunny the lighted side was brown and the shaded side was black , but that was over 40 years ago !

Found this if it help. Brad Wike. The guy that built the most accurate real replica of the Smokey and the Bandit Kenworth. He said the truck is not coffee brown, it is black. It was painted to match the Trans Am. He had even confirmed it when he built his replica from the guy that painted the original trailer.

Nice touch using Lightning Rod by Jerry Reed during the time lapse. It still amazes me how many folks think he was just an actor that sang a song or two for a movie. The man was a musical genius and there will be guitar players a 100 years from now pulling their hair out trying to learn his instrumental songs.

G'day Mark, I'm a retired trucker in Australia and a member of a lot of Model truck forums in the US. The concensus of opinion is there were 3 Trucks in the Movie. At the start of the movie the where he drives the truck into Snowmans yard and unloads the Trans Am, that truck is a 73 50th Anniversary with the Gold bonnet emblem and is Black and Gold. The other two are 74 with Chrome emblems and are Coffee Black or Black Coffee and Gold. Couple of tips You won't get the right colour till you put the clear over the base. Use black under coat under black. Light Grey undercoat will give the gold a lift. I would spray out the base and clear over a few test pieces to see the different tones that will happen. You will need at least 3 coats of base to cover. Huge fan of this movie. Hope I have helped you. Les

That’s the color. My grandfather lived in Jupiter Florida close to Burt Reynolds. He owned a diesel repair shop in Miami and Palm Beach area. Anyways, the car and truck were in Florida for a show and the truck developed an air leak. They drop the truck at my grandfathers shop. It was a quick fix, but I got to see the truck. It was brown. Same color you are painting it.

If you use a black primer or a sealer under the paint it will come out darker when you spray it should try that

    • @Rosy_87
      @Rosy_87 3 года назад

I was going to say the same thing. If you use a sealer over your primer they should be able to tint it something close to job color. Primer color can definitely change the color especially when the light hits it. That was only one coat with the spray bomb as well 2 or 3 coats and it should darken up.

It’s psavel on my other account... use some of the gold foil sticky backed insulation heatshield material on the floor over the exhaust. Or some heat wrap on the exhaust and problem solved. The shop is looking amazing Mark! I do agree the paint looks like it could use a touch more black added to it although it is deceiving to try and tell on this little phone screen. Missed last weeks episode of TSG didn't get the notification but I got the one for today's video and went back and checked and found last weeks and watched it. Nice to see you got your cement in and OH doors to boot. Boy Imagine when you drop your first tool and hear that wonderful clunk on the cement... you will have a grin a mile wide, no more dicking around in the snow for a tool, no more freezing cold tools in your hands... no more laying in the snow on the ground where you can feel the cold... a nice warm shop that will allow you to work inside on even the coldest of days during our wondaful winters here in AB
I am sure you will be counting down the days like kids do to Christmas for when you can official move in to the shop and start working away glad to see that the shop build came along so well now the little things and then boom...shop party!
Well depending where you got your pain mixed ( whether at Carlson or elsewhere ) if you found it is a little too brown and not dark enough you can always ask them if they can tint you a spray can just a shade darker, they are pretty good at most of the paint places when i comes to the paint and helping o tint if need be to get a match to what you need.I had that issue painting a truck when I did a few test panels, the pain colour was just off a tad.. and i wouldn't have been able to be blended between new and old.. and went back and got a little more tint, took a couple of tries but we got i and then painted and blended old and new and you wouldn't know the difference
Oh man that insulation and the sound deadening will make a huge difference with the temps but also with going down the road, you will still hear that engine but not so much you need ear plugs...lol. She's looking good...lots of work into her already but I am sure you enjoyed the break with the family and getting away and sitting back and seeing some sights, a little relaxation some cold beverages and of course some fireside dinners...
well glad to see you back at it Mark and look forward to the next update and congrats on the over 100k subs plateau ( I know you can't see it but your getting a serious golf clap from me over here )

Its exciting watching the shop come together. You dont even know yet how awesome its going to be this winter!
As far as painting goes you are going to need a bunch of stuff before you tackle that.
    1. Dedicated compressor for paint, 60gallon minimum.
    2. Good air/water filter, i use the devilbiss QC3, this also has built in pressure regulator on output side.
    3. Dedicated air lines that are NOT used with any other shop tools. Its extremely important to have your paint air supply separate from shop air supply, you do not want paint contamination, it can an will happen my friend, it will cause very expensive and tedious redo work.
    4. Buy a good gun of at least average quality. I like the devilbiss tekna guns ($500) range.
Use a separate gun for primers, again the devilbiss ‘starting line’ 2 gun kits are great ($150) range, ive used the starting line gun for primer for years at my business.
    5. You need to throw away all of your cans of wd40 and switch to non silicone based lubes. You wouldn’t think it would but it gets into the air and causes massive contamination of everything paint related.
Research that if you dont believe it. A local industrial powder coating shop lost an entire weeks worth of production due to a pallet of wd40 soaked parts sitting inside the warehouse. Caused north of 100k in damages.
    6. You must use a good 2k mixed primer under all of your paint, your basecoat/clearcoat topcoats can cause lifting and or wrinkling of cheap rattle can or ready to spray primers. Dont scrimp and be a tight ass here. You DO NOT want to be trying to removed failed coats of primer/basecoat/clearcoat on rivet heads and such !!!!!!!!!!!
    7. Your bondo needs to be sanded with 220/320 grit paper before primer to get rid of deep scratches. Your primer needs to be finish sanded with 400g before paint, thats a minimum requirement for most paints, if i were you i would get it all sanded smooth with 320/400g dry and then wet sand it all with 400g wet, followed by a quick pass of 600g wet. This will allow you to put a bit of shine to the primer and it will basically allow you to see what it would look like painted. Do not paint over burn thru spots. Your work needs to be 100% primed, paint will adhere differently to bondo or old paint and you will see the outlines of the burn thru later. It can also react and lift the paint around burn thru spots. Also dont use the cheap ass bondo you get on the shelf at the parts store. All bondo is not created equal. You need to use a heavier bodied filler for bigger repairs and a finishing glaze/putty on top of that and for smaller repairs, i use dolphin glaze by upol. You will like that.
Do NOT use the shitty red squeeze tube spot putty thats premixed. That shit will shrink up for eternity because it never cures, dont make that mistake, use the dolphin glaze.
Dont use any ready to spread or ready to spray products, they are garbage, 2k only.
    8. Go down to a local bodyshop and pick up an old hood or trunk lid from a slightly damaged car, they might give it to you.
Bring that home and practice every step of your priming and painting process, you dont want to make the mistakes that are 100% going to happen on the trucks.
I, like you decided to start doing my own paint and body stuff a long time ago and I, like you didnt even know what I didnt know and learned everything the hard way, by that i mean expensive and labor intensive.
You can definitely do it yourself but you have to make sure your giving yourself the best chance of success by using the proper tools and tactics. I did just what your wanting to do and it worked out fine and eventually turned into a full time restoration business.
Keep up the good work man.
Will the blue pete fit in the shop door with the tall stacks ????????????????

Mark if your going to paint it yourself I'm sure you can find some books on how to paint, is there a Canadian equivalent of Haynes manuals? But a few tips
Mask up a area with tarp, put sawdust on the floor then dampen with water to pull dust & moisture out the air, lightly sand all the paint down to key it & strip off as much parts as possible to save on masking up, panel wipe between every stage, coat of primer, sand, primer, sand, base coat, sand, then I'd say 3-4 coats of paint, spay from left to right or right to left depending which works best for you, always spray the full width of a panel to avoid runs & overspary, 2 coats of Lacker (clear coat)
If there's any imperfections can use a high buid putty at the primer stage, any imperfections in the finished paint can always be lighly flated back before Lacker
But if you take your time & have a guide to help you can get very good results
I'm no vehicle painter but was tought how to do it by my mechanic who was a paint sprayer for 20yrs before getting bored of painting cars
& My biggest bit of advice is don't leave anything sitting around in primer!!! As the primer can suck in the moisture & can end up with water under the paint that can come through & even rust down the road

Mark, if you use Red (rust color) primer instead of the grey it will darken your paint in a way. Different color primers enhance the paint color differently. Or even s black primer, best is to get different primers and do tests with your paint

Mark, you sure do fine work! Love watching you save the old iron. From what I’ve seen, the color of the truck is Coffee Black, which people say is a really really dark brown, along with a little flake thrown in which probably helps the color changing appearance. If anyone will get the color right it will be you. 👍

I think what you first sprayed looks closer to UPS 'brown' . Glad to have the videos again.

All you need to do is get a reflective tint for car windows. It's easy to install or take off if you want/need to, and it's cheap. The best part is that you can see out, but they can't see in, and it'll slightly cool the building. There are some cons to using it... You will not have a lot of light coming in from outside.

Oh so good to have you back! Your eye does "see" black but a closer look does seem to have a brown tinge to it and it would make sense with the gold contrast colour. I'm assuming that it wasn't a Kenworth factory combination?

On video it definetly looks brown. It needs more black. I think it should look nysterious to observer.... is it black, is it brown.
Glad to see you back. That shop will be wonderful.

Hey Marc, I think that color is pretty dang close to perfect. I think once you get some gold color on the dark brown it will darken the brown. You'd be surprised how much of a difference a lighter color on a dark color will change it. You might need a second coat too to darken it up more because you used a gray (light colored) primer. All in all, I think you done nailed the color my man! Shop looks awesome BTW!
