Rewatching this again after 10 years from the last time i played the snow queen quest, I feel a bit more sad realizing the girls that were tricked into serving the snow queen had to be specifically killed in order to get what they want. I felt really angry when I was a teen playing this cause the girls essentially ran away but now that I'm older it's pretty pitiful since they only saw the bad in life. Maybe I am just over thinking this lol.
I couldn't agree more with your analysis of Persona 1's sound design across both versions of the game. The sound design of the original was arguably one of the game's strongest draws. That it was abandoned wholesale for the PSP was unforgivable, as that version would be unquestionably definitive in the eyes of players if the original sound was at least an option. Perhaps there was some technical/hardware reason they couldn't include it?
Maybe, but the PSP was a more powerful system than the PS1 and the UMD had more storage space so I'm not sure what possible limitation could have prevented them from including the original music and sounds.

This was a long restrospective but a really satisfying. I´m with you when it comes to the soundtrack. Not a bad soundtrack but sadly not fitting, there is mod for using the original soundtrack via emulation buuuut it only cover the quantity of tracks that there are in the game so only 60 something tracks. Also it seems that they try the same thing with P2 soundtrack but i assume there was backlash because that game let´s you choose the soundtrack you wanna use. Despite having researched the game so much and playing it prior to your video series I've been hooked on each vid since the first dropped. You really go the extra mile in each part. So much little extraneous information I had no idea about in addition to your analysis and background information on Jungian psychology. There's a lot less quality Persona content (analysis in particular) on RUclips than I'd hoped for so I was ecstatic when I first found you. You're my go to rec when anyone wants to know about this game. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to not just your Persona content but whatever other game you decide to cover.
It's insane how you perfectly speak my mind about old games around the 18 minute mark. I think a great example of this is Silent Hill. I could never ever imagine a modern Silent Hill 1 or 2. You really get ported to the era it was made in and it adds to the feel. The old, clunky aesthetic and gameplay (apart from the awesome OST of course) adds immensely to the overall creepy and eerie tone of the game and that's a good thing.
one thing that really bothered me in the PSP version was how much the battle animations where downgraded idk why but alot of them look worse, half the time they just look like rotating PNGs, after playing the psx version i would say it has some of my favorite sprite work on the psx as a whole
I bought this game the day it came out and I recall something about the Snow Queen Questing having been cut due to time constraints, and justified by "most probably couldn't do it anyway". That being said, I was hugely disappointed by its absence but still managed to thoroughly enjoy the PS1 version for everything it had to offer. I was one of the few people who did lots of grinding to get various personas (which ultimately weren't needed to complete the game, but it was a fun game). I'm normally someone who doesn't care for excessive battling but I must say I didn't notice how drawn out some of these fights were in comparison to other RPGs at the time. I've recently started playing through it again and feel mostly the same, though I notice it a bit more now perhaps. If I had the resources to retranslate the original PS version, I would totally do it. PSP version is nice in many regards but I prefer the "feel" of the original PS version.
Thanks for this series. I would have never played Revelations Persona after playing the PSP Remake. I would have never been able to appreciate the differences. Good stuff!
Late comment, but I've been rewatching your series and it's amazing, Snickety. About the game/video: It's so weird that in the SEBEC route, the person that has the strongest ties to one of the main villains is such a hassle to get in the party! With the whole revenge plot and anger Reiji has against his brother, you would think he would be a mandatory party member, just like Maki.
honestly playing p1 sqq on a real crt is just magical man. i played w a walkthrough obviously cuz i dont know japanese, but i think the og ost and style really makes the experience to me. i previously played sqq on p1 and i didn't really like it, but on psx it just felt right. the new ost really kills the atmosphere, and the overall charm in the game for me. also in a way i kinda like transitory butterfly as nyx's battle theme, it's a lot darker and it fits the battle better. the snow queen battle theme fits the lady masquerade battle much better imo. ALSO WHY DID THEY REMOVE THE SNOW QUEEN THEME FROM THE PSP VERSION WTF IT'S LIKE ONE OF THE BEST SONGS OF THE OG GAME
Great job on the complete analysis of this series, not many people have dwelled deeply into the megami tensei library and given it an informative analysis such as you have. Keep it up the good work champ🏆
One of the issues I imagine is that Persona 1 had a lot more Smt in it’s DNA, so approaching it with a Persona 3-4-5 mindset was gonna lead to a bunch of tone clashes, all mainline SMTs, including some of the spin offs like Devil Survivor 1, and Strange Journey have an incredibly oppressive atmosphere, also having the battle theme not kick in until you actually attack is totally a mainline SMT touch.
This was great! (as always) Man, it took a while but this has been one of my favorite series to watch on youtube ever. Something that I don't think I've ever said is how you have not only managed to maintain this sense of atmosphere and style through the whole series but also that you have created an atmosphere through this series that manages to make me ponder on the themes of the game, suck me into the game as if I was playing it, but also deeply inspire me as a creator, not just as a youtuber but also a writer. So glad to have been able to see this whole series and I cannot wait to see you tackle the next games in the next games in the series.
I just came upon these videos and they are awesome. My childhood reviewed in great detail. On this video and the PSP remake, I agree with all of your complaints. Most notably the soundtrack. The original soundtrack has flaws by today's standards, mainly in quality and use of midi files over real instruments and voices. That said, none of those issues required replacement over remastering. I have tried to get through the PSP remake many times and the soundtrack alone just kills it for me.
For some reason I just remembered that Elly looks extremely similar to my exes sister Laura. Like if you didn’t know you could literally think that someone made a cartoon version of her.
Anybody else seeing Maruki in the Snow Queen Quest or am I tripping? The only difference is Doc is a hypocrite instead of tempted by a greater force 🤷♂️
RUclips has MANY issues, but I’m glad it exists because niche content wouldn’t exist otherwise. I love the amount of love and dedication Snickety shows to making these videos the best they can be.
Yeah same here. but overall i do prefer psx. Just having more and of course those character themes. I didn't even know about the sound effect stuff he mentioned but that also puts it above for me
Never played the OG persona but damn that OG P1 ost is sick, they should have kept that style or make a PS4 reboot with the same sound settings and ambience
I wonder if those soundtrack issues arose from giving space to the new fmvs+new songs+voice acting and the details were sacrificed simply because of the UMD format. Not an excuse or a wise decision, but it does make me think there is some relationship there that ultimately was accepted to favor the "modernization process". I also wonder if there was an issue of available source material (original sound data) considering safekeeping is a much more recent concern in the industry, so when "modernizing" not all sounds were available and a lot of them were only the compressed PS1 version that was deemed improper for the re-release - and then the probably miniscule budget directed towards the PSP version was directed into visuals, translation and voice acting and the soundtrack/sound design were left to grab the breadcrumbs. The budget may also be the reason the japanese version just didn't bother with VA, maybe because a re-release of such an old game was deemed low priority there where it had already made it's impact and the focus was on the western audience that was either new to it or unsatisfied by the first localization effort, so "Shoji-ing" the soundtrack took priority on the audio department. From a commercial standpoint it's quite logical. A bit disgraceful, but logical.
There's a mod for the PSP version to have the OG OST (except for new tracks that didn't have a PS1 counterpart and the OP and ED). So, hey, now the best of both worlds on that part.
So what you're saying is... If you like style, play SEBEC in the original, Snow Queen on PSP. If you like stuff that is more modern player friendly, all PSP. Would that be a good idea?
Glad I found your Persona 1 analysis video. Binge watching everything from you right now. I wanted to share thoughts on the music. As someone who started with Persona 3 and Persona 4, I find myself on the side that absolutely love the Persona 1 PSP soundtrack a lot, and would vastly put it over the original soundtrack (the original isn't necessarily bad, but it just doesn't sound as good as the PSP one at all to me.) I think you bring up incredibly solid points on why the PSP version just doesn't fit the eerily dark mood, but I feel that because I grew up experiencing the whole Japanese pop music with lyrics blasting during battles, it's why I could highly get down with the normal and boss battle music so much. Seeing it occur here in Persona 1 PSP just makes it fit more with the modern Persona games to me because it follows the same musical style that Persona 3 - Persona 5 have established for the current direction of the series. I think if maybe I experienced the Persona series through the original Persona 1, and especially back in the time period before Persona blew up into this massive series that caters towards current anime trends, then I would highly be on the side saying the original soundtrack is superior and should be the one listened to when playing the game. Alas, I got in during the modern/current era. Though, even I can admit that when redoing the game and introducing it to a new audience, they probably should have stayed closer to the original version. Maybe just updated all the original songs with newer sounding instruments or cleaned the music up, whatever to present the game in the closes and near-perfect version to new Persona fans to see how the original series tone used to be like before the drastic reboot/change in Persona occurred with Persona 3. They really should have just added a toggle between the soundtracks to please both sides. It's also strange that characters themes were mostly omitted except for a few, and the sound effects were changed or outright missing. The things with sound effects are nitpicks for me, but I can't help but wonder if this occurred due to PSP constants, or just a problem happened during development that was overlooked. Anyways, thank you for starting this in-depth analysis of the Persona series! It's absolutely amazing to see someone presenting so much research. These videos on Persona 1 had made me come to appreciate it more and how much it used Jungian Psychology to craft the image of Persona for the very first game.
The reason why the Japanese cutscenes don't have voice acting is because the original voice actors had retired, and Atlus wanted to be respectful so they instead put subtitles in.
Ironically they really need to re-release this game and both Persona 2 games again as well. Especially since we didn't get Persona 2 Eternal Punishment PSP release.
im an in-between with he soundtrack, yeah the psp SONGS are great, but, it doesnt capture the dark tone of the story edit: laughs in talked to reiji's mother multiple times yet still got him on the party*
To be more precise there is more relation between reiji and his 2nd persona. Just like reiji desire to kill his brother, Mot mythology also plays same scenario where he keep trying to kill his brother baal
Really, the overall things such as the sound design not being there didn't bother me too much when I played both versions a bit back on emulators. I noticed that some of the og sounds were gone but I always assumed that was just because this was a different era, we don't NEED those sounds made by certain things to keep us into the game. However what they did to the boss themes fading in and out is TERRIBLE why did they do that to me?
I'm sorta in between when it comes to the music. I like songs like dream of butterfly and lone prayer which to me are frickin' bops, but I can see where there are problems like how the basic over world theme plays in areas it shouldn't.
T^T I just watched all the parts and I'm so glad how detailed this was! I actually didn't know you could change the screen color like in P2 PS1 (kinda makes me want to play Revelations again) I need to play through the game a few more times with each character tho 1st: SEBEC - Hidehiko, SQQ - Hidehiko & Eriko (this was PSP btw) 2nd: SEBEC - Reiji (or should I say Chris since this was Revelations) I have 2 more play through to do 3rd: SEBEC - Eriko, SQQ - Nanjo & Hidehiko (this will be PSP with the music patch even tho it doesn't restore all the music it will still make it a different experience) 4th: SEBEC - Ayase, SQQ - Nanjo & Eriko (this I want to wait till hopefully the person who was translation the PC version finishes)(I hope this becomes a thing because then we will have the original ost and sounds + a faithful translation)
someone was but they had to put it on hold. I had contacted them to see if it was still a thing and they told me they'd like to get back to it eventually This was months ago so let me see if I can still find it
Honestly I'm thinking I'm going to buy the PSP re releases soon. I'm going home for a few weeks, and then I'm flying to Hawaii. And that's a pretty long flight so... if I can pick up and get into the first game, that would be pretty great. I definitely play Persona for the story.
I played a modded version of the PSP release with the original soundtrack, and honestly, thank god I did. I enjoy the music of P3 a lot, it's one of my favorite videogame soundtracks period, but even putting aside how much the re-release music breaks my immersion/breaks the atmosphere, I also genuinely think it's Bad. Like, actively bad, poorly made songs with no heart in them. Particularly A Lone Prayer. I know it has its fans, but my god, I cant imagine having to listen to that every. single. battle. If I hadnt found a mod replacing the music I might never have played P1 at all.
I think the music thing is more than a difference of taste. If the music playing doesn't apply to the situation, it can actively harm the moments feel and implications. I believe the first example you gave of the music being different (the part with the heartbeat, I think its spelled Avidya world or something) being changed to just the generic school music really harms the feel of the moment.
Still prefer the ps1 version or orignal design. I would like toplay the orignal jp ps1 version with an english patch some day, but getting a pc port on steam and then modding it feels more likely lately.
As someone who played both versions, I couldn't agree more with the soundtrack issues. The original game had music that really fit, but i do really like the remaster's whole feel, I just wish that the songs were in a different persona game
Here's how you do it one option for all original sound "Classic" one option for original sound plus the new songs that fit the old style "Classic Deluxe" one option for the PSP soundtrack with the jpop included "Modern" it would also be nice if they gave a HUD and cutscene toggle edit: I hoenstly do like voice as a credits track though, it helps to relieve the tension caused by the eerily quiet ending scene.
After playing some of more recent MegaTen releases like Noctrune HD, I think a new port of Persona 1 would make good use of optional soundtracks you can switch via the options menu. In Nocturne HD you can select music from SMT, SMT II, SMT IV, and IV Apocolypse. So having a menu that lets you switch between the original and PSP soundtracks would be great.
I did the Max Ambrosia run. While I did get everyone's ultimate persona, I couldn't use 2 or 3 of them because their Persona level was too low. Another thing I did was collect all 12 mirror shards. This will get you the Spiegel Armor. It can only be equipped by the MC and has the highest evade stats in the game. However I did not use it; I maxed out agility and dexterity and just bought the higher defense armor from the shop that was could be equipped by everyone.
I still don't understand why Shoji couldn't just make a soundtrack that's similar to his work in DDS or Strange Journey (if he composed that game anyways), but at least the Persona 2 PSP remakes have both the original and remastered soundtracks for each game. Speaking of Eternal Punishment I really wish it would've been translated but I don't think there's any translators for PSP games left.
I haven't played Persona 1 yet, just seen videos about it and listen to some of the soundtracks on youtube. I do like the new PSP soundtrack... in a vacuum. Those tunes are great for just listening and dancing. In the actual game, however, the OG soundtrack is WAY better. I think what we need is a patch that applies the PSP localization to the PSX original Japanese release. Or better yet, Atlus could re-release the game and have us choose which soundtrack we want (ala Sonic CD's modern ports).
Damn. The Persona 1 gang fought Nyx and the protagonist didn’t even have to become a door to beat it. Guess he’s stronger than Makoto.
@Daniel Paul Also, In P1 all the team were wildcards while in P3 only Makoto was a Wildcard

ALSO WHY DID THEY REMOVE THE SNOW QUEEN THEME FROM THE PSP VERSION WTF
IT'S LIKE ONE OF THE BEST SONGS OF THE OG GAME
Really good job. Can't wait for the Persona 2 analysis!
This whole analysis was so much fun to watch! you are doing such a great job
it makes me dance like crazy thinking about more of this videos
Great job on the complete analysis of this series, not many people have dwelled deeply into the megami tensei library and given it an informative analysis such as you have. Keep it up the good work champ🏆
REALLY looking forward to the Persona 2 videos :)
Good to know... I played Strange Journey before SMT4 and didn't realize that touch!
Thanks! That was my intention with a lot of the editing/pacing so I'm glad someone picked up on it.
Feels Like The EXPERT mode is not a big deal at all.
All it does it has more chances for you dying and missing.
Like Dying from Deathika.
I would keep lone prayer, bloody destiny, and pandora theme, but definitely add the og persona summon theme. That was pretty cool.
There's a patch that replaces the music with the old music, although it's worth noting it doesn't add back the full track count.
For some reason I just remembered that Elly looks extremely similar to my exes sister Laura. Like if you didn’t know you could literally think that someone made a cartoon version of her.
Glad we took care of Nyx. Hopefully we never see Nyx agai-
Naoya Toudou:Emperor
Maki sonomura: priestess
Yukino Mayuzumi: Empress
Masao inaba (Mark): chariot
Kei nanjo: Hierophant
Eriko kirishima (Elly): judgement
Hidehiko Uesugi (Brown): Justice
Yuka Ayase: magician
Reiji Kido: Death and Devil
Anybody else seeing Maruki in the Snow Queen Quest or am I tripping?
The only difference is Doc is a hypocrite instead of tempted by a greater force 🤷♂️
These videos are pure gold! Thank you for taking the time to make this.
RUclips has MANY issues, but I’m glad it exists because niche content wouldn’t exist otherwise. I love the amount of love and dedication Snickety shows to making these videos the best they can be.
I prefer some tracks from the PSP version, and some from Revelations.
Yeah same here. but overall i do prefer psx. Just having more and of course those character themes. I didn't even know about the sound effect stuff he mentioned but that also puts it above for me
This is absolutely the best series on Persona so far, thank you for the deeo of my heart
Did the full run myself for all the ultimate personas for the Snow Queen Quest. It's not easy. Go for it, mate!
You brave soul.
@@SnicketySlice keep making great content, man!
Never played the OG persona but damn that OG P1 ost is sick, they should have kept that style or make a PS4 reboot with the same sound settings and ambience
Maybe Atlus can do the remake like sonic cd soundtrack option jp or us
They implented that for the Persona 2 PSP releases so they realized the error.
So, hey, now the best of both worlds on that part.
your videos makes me want to play persona 1 again, thanks man
I wish there was a music option that allowed to change music like some rpg remakes. I like both soundtracks.
Persona 2 PSP did this so they did learn.
So what you're saying is...
If you like style, play SEBEC in the original, Snow Queen on PSP.
If you like stuff that is more modern player friendly, all PSP.
Would that be a good idea?
Sounds about right, yeah.
Wow, that was a really good review. One of the best series I watched on u tube in a long time.
This channle deserved so much more viewers.
Mark's theme is amazing ngl
I loved this analysis. I can't wait for the Persona 2 analysis, as it's my favorite game (games..?) in the series!
Finally finished this whole thing, LMAO. Great series, dude, you're a stand-up act.
I wish i could experience this game when it launched.
Great video! It was really fun to watch it, thank you. Continue the good work!
Ironically they really need to re-release this game and both Persona 2 games again as well. Especially since we didn't get Persona 2 Eternal Punishment PSP release.
AWWWW!!! it feels bittersweet to have jumped on board early in this series, because i get to be here early... but i also have to wait... -_-'
im an in-between with he soundtrack, yeah the psp SONGS are great, but, it doesnt capture the dark tone of the story
edit: laughs in talked to reiji's mother multiple times yet still got him on the party*
To be more precise there is more relation between reiji and his 2nd persona. Just like reiji desire to kill his brother, Mot mythology also plays same scenario where he keep trying to kill his brother baal
No reason this channel shouldn't have 6 figure subs.
i want to see these videos more often but he works so hard on them and goes into a lot of detail and i can wait
27:13
Correction: this is false you can talk to Reiji's mother as many times as you like and still get him, idk where this rumor came from.
As someone who just started the persona series and wanted to know more about its universe, this has been a blessing video. Amazing work!!!
Well. Cant wait for that snow queen run stream
Thanks so much. Excellent content as always.
I actually didn't know you could change the screen color like in P2 PS1 (kinda makes me want to play Revelations again)
I need to play through the game a few more times with each character tho
1st: SEBEC - Hidehiko, SQQ - Hidehiko & Eriko (this was PSP btw)
2nd: SEBEC - Reiji (or should I say Chris since this was Revelations)
I have 2 more play through to do
3rd: SEBEC - Eriko, SQQ - Nanjo & Hidehiko (this will be PSP with the music patch even tho it doesn't restore all the music it will still make it a different experience)
4th: SEBEC - Ayase, SQQ - Nanjo & Eriko (this I want to wait till hopefully the person who was translation the PC version finishes)(I hope this becomes a thing because then we will have the original ost and sounds + a faithful translation)
Someone is translating the PC version?
someone was but they had to put it on hold. I had contacted them to see if it was still a thing and they told me they'd like to get back to it eventually
This was months ago so let me see if I can still find it
Honestly I'm thinking I'm going to buy the PSP re releases soon.
Im in the first camp i love the new ost expertly the p1 battle music it gets me hype has hell
I really liked what they did with Yamaoka. That was so cool.
Fantastic writing! Second time watching now
I think the music thing is more than a difference of taste. If the music playing doesn't apply to the situation, it can actively harm the moments feel and implications. I believe the first example you gave of the music being different (the part with the heartbeat, I think its spelled Avidya world or something) being changed to just the generic school music really harms the feel of the moment.
Finally. Been waiting for this for a while!
Still prefer the ps1 version or orignal design. I would like toplay the orignal jp ps1 version with an english patch some day, but getting a pc port on steam and then modding it feels more likely lately.
there's an undub patch for the psp version which makes the soundtrack good again
As someone who played both versions, I couldn't agree more with the soundtrack issues. The original game had music that really fit, but i do really like the remaster's whole feel, I just wish that the songs were in a different persona game
Brown is optional in the Snow Queen Quest?! That's news to me. When I tried to force him out, he forced himself into the party.
You can not pick him by recruiting Elly and Kei before getting to the room where you fight the fat kid that likes Ayase.
I think one thing the games have missed recently is a character changing their arcana when passing a certain event.
25:15 nocturne ptsd intensifies.
Thank you. Truly. Please, do more of these.
I csn mostly agree with you on the psp soundtrack. Except that school days will always be a bop, i dont care where its played it never gets old
School days is pretty good, it's true.
Schools days sounds like it could've been in the 90s
Here's how you do it
one option for all original sound "Classic"
one option for original sound plus the new songs that fit the old style "Classic Deluxe"
one option for the PSP soundtrack with the jpop included "Modern"
it would also be nice if they gave a HUD and cutscene toggle
edit: I hoenstly do like voice as a credits track though, it helps to relieve the tension caused by the eerily quiet ending scene.
But the real question is: did you use the bragging rights?
Not really. I don't know anyone that was into Persona enough to be impressed by that feat.
The new music is amazing. But I do wish they mixed the old music with the new one but whatever. Also ui for PSP is far better than ps1 in opinion
Geez, you're good, you made me want to play P1, please don't drop this series, your editing, researching and scripting are just too good.
